"The Sum of Their Parts", a post DH fic without epilogue compliance. As far as I am concerned, this is the only Dark Harry story that needs to exist anymore; the vast majority of the rest were worthless, execrable garbage to start with and now even the good ones have been rendered unnecessary. This story is complete and all of it is posted; no worries that the story will die or that the author will vanish before it is all up.

Summary of the story: "For Teddy Lupin, Harry Potter would become a Dark Lord. For Teddy Lupin, Harry Potter would take down the Ministry or die trying. He should have known that Hermione and Ron wouldn't let him do it alone."

You can't remember a 140k-plus word story that the final chapter was just posted of today, and which started being posted less than three weeks ago?

I find that rather unlikely.

Yup. Never said I finished it.

Must have tried a chapter or two early on but never went back to it for whatever reason.

Edit: Ah, that is where I know it from! Read some of it on A03 when I was looking around at Avenger fics (was re-reading a great Captain America fic) and some random crossover fics and side-tabbed it to read later.

This is an engaging, well-written story, with no bashing, lots of action and intrigue, and neat character twists. I like it. Thanks for reccing it.

So I recc'd this a while back, but gave no reasons why, which is bad form.

It took me a while to figure out why I love this fic so much, and I think it's because, IMO, it captures the themes of the canon books while subverting many of the obvious and not-so-obvious fanon tropes. For example, while I don't want to give away spoilers, Dobby is almost more of an antagonist in this fic, compared to the plot device that he frequently turns out to be in many fics.

actually he IS a plot device, a rather 'in your face' plot device, but that's more because we are seeing it from Harry's PoV and they started on the wrong foot.
but is a nice twist from the more common "nice/submissive" dobby willing and able to 'help' freely Dobby we see almost everywhere.

OTOH a piece of fano that i'm really glad to see discredited by canon is the 'Helpful and willing' Goblins who go out of their way to aid Harry Freaking Potter just... because.

I like Rent-A-Hero, but I think Harry spends far too much time being a whiny bitch.

I mean, it's totally understandable why he's like that. I'm sure that's the way many normal people would react. But I don't get into a Harry Potter story to read about normal people.

I heavily dislike the fic because Harry goes around being a whiny bitch while capitulating at every possible point, instead of wrecking everyone- good and bad- for being sanctimonious little shits.

Like, it's a god tier setup for a really nice exploration fic of what the 'greater good' truly means, and instead it's basically the bitchiest possible way to have an OP harry go back in time.

Except that Harry isn't a fanon Uber-Wizard with a fanon massive magical core capable of wrecking everyone despite having decades less experience. Which IMO is of the good.

Plus he made an attempt to get all involved arrested, but things didn't go his way. Which again is kind of refreshing IMO.

I like the take on Divination.  Nice to see it being used for something useful, and that a lot of the issues with it being terrible were because of the teaching method and lack of available knowledge.

Hardly fanon, the patronous at 13 in dictates he's better at magic than most. That said, nothing in canon mentions a magic core, but it is IS canon he's pretty good at the whole magic thing.
As for trying to get them all arrested, yeah, sure, like THAT's going to work. The weakest most halfassed thing he could have done to try and get even, was the one thing that was god damned guarenteed to literally never work.

The only thing I have problems with is that it looks like he got Tonks preggers. The last chapter was hinting at it. THAT is going to screw things up.

what would i like to see in a 'let's kidnap a *savior* from another timeline' fic? Fiendfyre to the face of the assholes who ripped him from a well deserved respite.
and i don't expect a 'finely tuned and completely in control' type of fiendfyre, i'm fine of the "here it's fiendfyre, i'm not dealing with this shit, bye" approach.

I +1 this FWIW. I could see it happen. And that's all I ever wish for in a good fanfiction. A believable "what if", and even more so a "what the fuck did it not happen exactly like this ?".

I pretty much don't touch any HP fic outside of Northumbrian's saga. For this, I made an exception and it certainly paid off handsomely. I even sent it to a super-critical friend and he also enjoyed it. We both agree that the ending was completely anticlimactic though.

I can't actually remember what story it's from, but I'm partial to the kind of fiendfire revenge some story had Andromeda use. The Lord Black of the time tried to marry Andromeda off to a Nott, so she burned down his home with fiendfire and cursed it to eternally burn above the wreckage with the words 'Fucking Try Me.'
