Transition issues (just a place to report them)

Several solutions, none of them good.

1. Make a bot that edits everyone's post to fix it. Downsides: Any bugs likely means large swaths of stories may get deleted in worst case. It also may not be able to figure out what symbol to replace it for. Some people don't want their posts edited.

2. Have the mods start fixing them manually. Downsides: moderating isn't a job, people don't like their posts being edited, and slow/inconsistant results.

3. Make the authors fix it. Downsides: Slow, inconsistent results, likely to be a lot of resistance. Several stories would never be fixed due to author abandonment.

I've fixed most of my own stories. The easiest way is to find the story on oTFF, click edit, copy the text and paste it into the appropriate post on nTFF. This way the bbcode is preserved along with the complex characters.

If you could get a script to do that, an automated system might be possible, but I don't think symbol replacement would work. The turns up for a lot of different reasons: bent quotes (“ or ”), bent single quotes and bent apostrophes(‘ or ’), single character ellipses (…), the complicated dashes (—) and probably a lot of other things I've not noticed.

Hmm... copying from the old site would definitely work the best for making the bot know what symbol needs replaced.

The rest of the cons still apply though.

Just found out about the transition. Found a message by Shirotsume actually on the old TFF saying I had to post in the suggestion box and an admin would get with me. If this is not the right place to check in, I apologize. Just putting mu foot in this new door.

Is anyone else occasionally getting a screen that says

This forum does not exist, why not register it for FREE?

When you type in the web address?

Dethklok: check your PMs, you should have the password to your account here. Username matches your oTFF account name.

whitewhiskey: never seen it, are you using thefanfictionforum.net or thefanfictionforum.icyboards.net?

The first one, but it only happened a few times and it's only happened today

It happened to me a while ago, but I can't remember if it was during a heavy load period or if it was when that new HDD crapped out and had to be replaced. I think it was the former, more likely, but it could have been the latter.

I'm going to double post, as this is a separate issue.

Tag 2 - Meinos Kaen

As you can see, this preview post is empty. It must have been missed by the original crawl, somehow. The posts are all there, but the actual contents of the first post are missing. I found this out after someone gave nTFF our very first story necro (I think) and requested chapter 2 of Tag.

If this happened to one thread, it stands to reason that it may have happened to others. I'm not saying to go search for them, but if anyone sees this happen please report it.

Dafuq

Looks like it fixed itself. Damn it now I look foolish.

Also, I accidentally posted a link back to the old TFF instead of here.

Doesn't seem to have mattered though, since the damn post contents randomly reappeared.

Edit:Wait what?....

Dafuq?

No seriously. Dafuq.

... apparently highlight is fucked?

Christ, that's going to be a bitch to figure out what's going on there...

Kinda looks like highlight fucks over all posts with invalid characters in them.

Here:Example
I chose a highlight string that does not exist in the thread. I also specifically chose a thread where the author has more than one post with invalid characters, and several posts without them on the first page. I also managed to find a non-author post with invalid characters in the same thread.
Author post without invalid characters and with highlight
Non-author poster with invalid character in post without highlight. With highlight

So I ran into a bit of an issue.

Made a post in the Naruto Manga thread.

Noticed that there was a new page on the thread, 1341.

Clicked on it and I get a "The specified thread does not exist message."

I can still see thread by manually changing the address to the page before or clicking on Last Post.

But trying to click on page 1341 gets me that message.

Using Chrome by the way.

Edit: And now that someone else has posted the problem seems to have fixed itself. Weird.
I just saw this, in the Bleach manga discussion thread.

I think that's happened to me 4 or 5 times now in various threads.

Yes, it's a known issue. I have no idea where to start on fixing it.

I am a programmer and would like to offer my help in trying to fix this. Personally, I suspect it's something to do with the theme - but need to test this with minor changes to verify.

I am sorely tempted to ask to be elevated to admin/mod to do this, but it could be seen by some as a "power-grab". Something we really don't need right now.

Guess we'll need to wait till our "parliament/congress" is created.

I'm a programmer as well- the issue isn't fixing it, it's fixing it without access to the source code of the forum, which we don't have. If it's an issue with the theme, you can check by seeing if you get an error with the fallback theme.

I'll need to find another "phantom link" then. But on the matter of source code, can anyone make a free forum with icyboards (to recreate this issue?) or is there some other requirement?

You misunderstand- icyboards does not give you shell access, you get the admin CP. We can't edit the source files this site runs on- all we can change is the CSS and the templates. Making a new forum would do nothing.

themes=/= forum engine.

You'd be surprised at how much of a forum's software resides in the themes.

I don't think Shirotsume would be surprised.

...Considering he has been administrating this forum for the past two weeks, and performing all of the editing and shenanigans himself.

Occasionally when I refresh the View Today's Posts page I get an error message: "An invalid search was specified. Please go back and try again." I have to go back up and click on View Today's Posts again to fix it.
