I've just seen the first episode of Souten, the manga of which was released as Fist of the Blue Sky. As the name suggests, it's in the same universe as Fist of the North Star and the protagonist is actually a predecessor of Kenshiro and his namesake. So transplant all the violent martial arts action to the 1930s with a Hokutoshinken practionier who clarkkents as a school teacher.

Also, Tales of Saiunkoku has reached 26 episodes and it's gotten fairly dark with a new mastermind of a villain. Granted the series is shojo, with all the bishonen fawning over the protagonist, but it's pretty damn entertaining anyway.

Just finished watching The Twelve Kingdoms (Juuni Kokuki -- ????) for what I believe the 5th time. I love this series. It's long, dramatic, historically influenced, and the plot is something out of this world. I hope they continue it, as it seemed to have ended oddly.

Just finished watching Ouran Koukou Host Club.
Considering the amount of prettyboys and yaoi jokes it's quite good, nice character development, unusual use of questionable sexualities and gender bending.
Recommendable, if you can put up with sometimes cute sometimes waffy series.

I just finished up Mai Otome.

Now, normally, i'm not one for Maho Shoujo (aka magical girl) but the whole premise of this anime really got to me. and as a added bonus (to me at least) they use high tech inseatd of magic to transform. Tech > Magic in my book.
later!

Marathon'd both Honey and Clover, and Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid. Both very enjoyable (although, being a rabid KyoAni fan, TSR was more enjoyable, marginally. :p).

...One thing to say about Honey and Clover is...

The first beginning OP animation?

...

Creepiest thing I've seen in a long time.

Yeah, made me shudder in horror. Fucking horrible. Evil, actually. I've skipped beginning credits before, but this is the first time I've done so out of fear.

Eden's Bowy, utter crap compared to the manga which had some nice bits, they also tore some of the main characters apart.

edit: anybody know where i can find a copy of the Xenogears anime?

I just watched, and finished Zone of the Enter: Dolores, i. My opinion? Not bad. Not a great series mind you, and with the exception of a few over acting and cheesy moments (and one episode made of cheese. ), it wasn't a terrible series. Had an overall good plot, even if the idea of a 'normal guy' being the hero is a bit cliched (though they did try to blunt it by making him an army man in the past).

Sad thing is, it is one of the few series I actually finished. Despite the fact I have a number of even better series sitting and collecting dust on my shelf. :ph43r:

Woohoo! Just noticed the new smilies.

Did you watch the second season of Honey & Clover? That's where the series really comes together and becomes one of the greats. If you haven't, just watch it.

Yeah, I already downloaded and watched it. Good ending.

Hmm... My thoughts (and spoiler warning for all of you who have yet to watch Honey and Clover):

The series highlight for me was Mayama, his character utterly fascinated me. Bluntly, I've never seen his character type used before, at least not in that light. Granted, the creepiness factor of his behavior was glossed over into comedy (The movie showed a more honest view, giving such scenes as his zip-lock bag wall-collection of Rika's items. X_X), but even if you take that into account, that obsession is a GOOD thing. Honestly, I don't think any other type of person could possibly get into a successful relationship with Rika (or at least help her get through her suffering). Only someone who literally knows the other person inside and out, and also are so obsessive (or really, really lucky, which is an overused plot device) that they can't let go of them could possibly work through it. That Mayama also lacks the usual delusions of not factoring in the consequences of that behavior into everything is also a plus.

That Mayama is also voiced by Sugita Tomokazu is just the icing on the cake, although I kinda hesitate to say its 'just', anything (I swear, including him into any anime automatically makes it ten times betters. <3<3<3).

Of course, it also hurt, since I liked Yamada, and I didn't like Nomiya. :/ The anime sort of skipped some of the deeper parts of that relationship, but even if you haven't read the manga, you have a pretty good idea that they're going to get together.

Blah...

At least it didn't disappoint me in terms of the Hagu-triangle. Breaking the mold is both a wonderful, and sad thing. I'm a sucker for happy ends, but I also dislike boring cliches, as oxymoronic as the thought is. Still, even so, I enjoyed that ending. Perhaps it's because Shuuji really WAS the best option for Hagumi, but I think it's mostly because I liked Takemoto more than Hagumi (and thus, didn't really want him to end up with her, which seemed more likely of the two despite certain circumstances).

I must also compliment the director of the anime, since there was almost no dragging of the plot whatsoever. It's good to find show that have next to no senseless waste of screentime. Although, I admit that the specials were very, very amusing, especially F. The only real disappointing part of the anime was the final episode's voice actor change. I realize that it was unavoidable, since Takemoto's VA got into an accident, but it was... shocking how much I missed hearing Kamiya Hiroshi as Takemoto. Granted, Nojima Kenji was a good choice, but he lacked certain qualities that fit the character better, so it was still disappointing, regardless of the circumstances.

I guess it was my fault for not waiting for the DVD version to get subbed though.

Oh well, anyway, I enjoyed the series quite a bit. :p

The first beginning animation of the first season is still the creepiest thing I've seen in a long, long time. *shudder*

Via what?

I've no idea where you might find it direct, but for torrents, Tokyo Toshokan has it listed. Just type it in the search bar.

Hahaha...

Currently in middle of watching 'History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi' episode 9.

That is the funniest thing I've seen since Oh My Goddess Season 2, the scene with Skuld and Murder-kun.

Overall this is the funniest and most enjoyable series (manga and anime) with martial arts in it that I've seen since Ranma.

On a different note, been reading Sic Semper Morituri in my spare time, up to chapter 52 of 54 on the main story arc, and all the side stories and spinoff arcs I've already read. Figure I'll finished Wednesday or Thursday at the current rate.

Oh? The ninth episode has been subbed (finally)? *grabs torrent* Good series, although the subs are really behind. ;_;

Mmm, anyway, I recently watched Ginban Kaleidoscope. Excellent, except for the ending, which was quite abrupt. I feel quite gypped after watching it. Still, ignoring that, a decent series.

I bumped into an anime called Nana, which is 50 eps long about a couple 20 year old women (both named Nana) who just moved to Tokyo to pursue their dreams. They bump into each other on a train and start to talk, then randomly bump into each other while trying to see an apartment for rent. They become roommates and affect each other's lives. Slice of Life but very interesting.

One Nana has been pining for her boyfriend in a long distance relationship for a year. Her ambition is to become a housewife, but she's an airhead romantic and gets suckered by men who use her and throw her away. She has a good family life, but she's the middle child and her mom has her hands full dealing with her sisters and household. She's always cheerful and energetic and gets very depressed and needy if she's without a man. We all know women like this, which is why its so creepy.

The other Nana is a gothic-punk rock singer who'd had a successful band somewhere near Hokkaido (they never say, but it snows a lot), and is chasing her boyfriend to Tokyo, without chasing him. She's very reticent and bossy, actually correctly characterized punk rock girl. Other punk rockers see her single tattoo of a lotus blossom as scandalous (ahahahaha!). Punk Nana is really well done. Her warring pride and desire to be a woman confuses her in a very believable way.

This series strongly reminds me of Honey and Clover, though its not exactly the same kind of story. H&C is about love and regret. Nana is about loneliness, fear, and yearning. For the emotions it defines its very good, particularly the heartaches of the airhead Nana. Other characters are well done and believable and the main focus of the plot revolves around the music industry in Japan, and how ugly it is, tied in with magazines, TV stations, product tie ins, and marketing. It seems that these industries are so cold they'll prep the rise AND fall of a band just to sell things. I think the US and UK music industries do that now too, which is probably why so many bands go Indy instead. Burning CD's is easy, and the internet makes downloads and viral marketing a simple matter of coding rather than large staffs of marketing firms. The big guys are losing out to the little guys. I don't think the characters in this story know that yet. The music gets repeated a lot, and if you're familiar with US and UK punk, you'll think Japanese punk is a little too mainstream with too many power chords so it resembles glam rock more than punk. The singer of the tracks is trying though and while her voice can't hit all the notes, at least the anime admits that and treats it as a plot point. I do recommend Nana if you enjoy Slice Of Life animes.

One final note: the author of the story is associated with Kurt Cobain's widow, who signed a deal to make an anime about her (in allegory) called Princess Ai, so this almost certainly takes cues from it. Since its more inspired than constrained its probably better that Prin.Ai. Haven't seen that so I don't actually know. So far there are 41 eps out on youtube.com. See it if so inclined.

Another anime I started watching is La Corda D'Oro, about a girl with no musical training being forced to compete with musical bigots (if you can't play you're nothing but a servant) using a magic violin because she could see an Italian fairy (who moved there after being rescued by the school's founder 30 years earlier). Its not really about the classical music but rubbing the Japanese's noses in their own bigotry, which seems to be a common theme in these animes, isn't it? After Captain Harlock embracing the Japan vs Monster Americans, and quite a few other animes like that. After all, American Invaders all want to take their women and wreck their towns, and any children are despised as "Half" or "Spare Change", even today. Pathetic. Japan needs to get over itself. Will Japan be itself without bigotry running all their politics? LCO may get interesting eventually but so far I'm not that impressed. Its probably aiming for an audience of teenagers.

Just started watching Rozen Maiden. Ehh. Dunno. Hope it gets better. I'm curious about why the boy is such a little bitch, but that's about it.

And I'm watching Tsukuyomi Moon Phase, which I like despite the fact its a lolicon anime. Which is creepy. Even the guy's arranged fiancee is like 13 or so. I do enjoy it though because she's so cute and the whole vampire story, and him being a keitaro-like lunkhead, makes it fun. It kinda reminds me of Pani Poni Dash at points, with a darker undertone. The opening song is both cute to watch and listen to. Unusual for a opener to be good enough to hear every episode.

I continue to watch Bleach though it recently occured to me that there's a serious schizm in the heaven-side ranks. Why are all the captains punks? And most of them are kids too. There are no grownups in the entire show. Its all "I'm doin it because I wanna... ouch!" people. Which tells me its made for 14 year old boys and I've wasted my time watching this. Oh well, at least it was good practice hearing japanese. I think if I understood the language better I'd think the dialogue was worse than Sailor Moon or A-Team. "I'm gonna git you!" "No, I have the power!" "Watch me!" crap. More and more, these kid animes which take themselves too seriously, with unlimited and unending powerups (Dragonball Z with more stylish clothes?), just turns me off. Bleach is Blech.

Kanon 2006 continues to be beautiful and sad. It being this good, I don't mind the delay to season 3 of Ah My Goddess or the 2nd season of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I watch a lotta animes don't I?

I recently got myself into Pumpkin Scissors. It's a bizzare little anime, but I like it. In particular, the setting, being smiliar to post-WWI, but in its own universe. It doesn't seem to go anywhere at times, but it's enjoyable to watch, in my opinion at least.

Also, it's giving me ideas for fanfiction. Might still require some tweaking, but ideas nonetheless.

I'm mainly just watching Bleach and Naruto, with a little Gundam SEED on the side. Lately, I've been kinda reluctant to start any new series and just stick with what I know I like.

Watching right now...

Hmm...

I'm buying the Inuyash box sets as they come out, but I'm not really hyper about watching it; I read the manga instead.

Ditto Naruto; I download the eps but now that the fillers are over, there's no new stuff outside of the manga. Yeah, the fillers sucked for the most part, but at least it was "new" material... kind of like reading fanfics, I guess.

There's this magical girl anime called "Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch" that is surprisingly good. Every rational thought says I should hate this anime... sickingly sweet romance, annoying musical interludes, and NO fanservice... but for some reason, I like it. The only group that's subbing it hates the show, though. And they get pissy when people ask when the next ep is coming out, even though they take several months per release. Too bad ADV dropped it, then at least I would have been able to buy it...

Then there's this anime from the 80's called "Touch." 101 episodes and 5 movies. It's all on youtube. I highly encourage vets and newbs alike to check it out; they don't make 'em like this anymore. The entire first season (27 episodes) is a set up for the rest of the series.

Well, while I continue to struggle to, even graduate... (and is the main culprit in me NOT writing fanfiction at the moment) :headbanger: , I did (during the few 'off times' I allow myself) to finish Full Metal Panic... Season 1 (haven't seen Fumoffu yet, and I haven't started TSR. Which I'm saving when they decide, inevitably release it in a box set).

Great series IMO, even if it is a bit odd. Yeah, it is, I guess an action show with mechs, drama, and intense episodes. But this is coupled with, life in high school (extremely non-serious stuff), which I know is spun-off to Fumoffu. Still, does make me eager for TSR.

Now if I can just get around to finishing the other series on my self.

I just started the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. I have been told that the first few episodes are tough to sit through and that the series only picks up towards the end; however, I love it so far.

It should be also noted that, Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is also, unique in that the episodes could be said to actually 'be' out of order. I haven't finished watching the series (and no plans too in the near future due to my busy schedule) but you could 'reorder' the episodes for them to be 'chronological'.

Two new series a friend of mine showed me:

Tokyo Majin Gakuen

and

Ghost Hunt

Pretty good, and tend to deal with the supernatural. The first is more serious and involves some fighting, while the latter is kinda detective cases with humor thrown in.

...God, I lol'd so hard. Desu Noto has just become a hundred times better, just from the new beginning OP. Kudos to the animators for making it so damn funny/weird, yet so... right at the same time.

Anyway, also been watching Keroro Gunsou, finally. First season's a fourth of the way done. Would have watched more but I've been busy.

Eh. He's just emo like that.

About the only reason I managed to last through it and Trõumend was Suigintou. She's fun. Homicidal, but fun. Should be the focus Maiden instead of Shinku.
