What Cartoons Are You Watching

Well, its disappointing since there was a clear character progression from Alien Force to Ultimate Alien. Besides, his most distinct features in Omniverse, his constantly saying how he saved the universe and trying to go at it alone, were things everyone kept calling him out on in the previous shows.

I'll be honest. I never really did like Ben in Ultimate Alien. Things went his way a little too often and near the end was basically Ben being awesome and his entire supporting cast reduced to taking on mooks.

He still has the "I'm the amazing Ben 10" attitude in Omniverse but everyone calls him out on it here. His supporting cast is useful now and can actually handle themselves without Ben needing to be there to save the day. All in all I like it much better.

I can agree with this. My main issue is that while the Omniverse supporting cast has become useful, they kicked out the two mainstays of his old supporting cast, and when they've guest starred since they've largely been about as useful as they'd devolved to be. The first time they just kinda abandoned Ben to a problem Kevin caused, and the second time they didn't show up to help fight off a global invasion until AFTER the invasion had actually happened. At least before Omniverse everyone showed up for all hands on deck situations like that.

I've been watching Young Justice. It's just finished it's second and final season and is great. I cannot recommend it enough to people who like superhero shows.

So moved on to Justice League Unlimited. Something I have to note, just like with Gundam's fighting regular vehicles, it's pretty clear that the only reason the 'regular' heroes are outfighting people with guns is because the story demands that they do so.

So I watched the three episode opener of the new Max Steel, and I'm kinda ambivalent. I mean the concept that they're using is kinda awesome, but I'm less than enthused by the execution. Mysterious non-humanoid alien invasion, Corporate espionage, action out the yin-yang, it's the sort of thing that could be really good or really cliche/bad. I'm still debating. Though I think its the same guy voicing Max as the old series? Similar anyway.

Why hello there typical animated show writers, how are you today?

I'll admit that the whole Aesop amnesia is irritating but the writers buy a lot of credit back with me by saying that that obnoxious Ultimate Alien iteration of Ben 10,000 is non-canon/not the actual future, and they're going back to the one who was overly serious as an adult but then figured out family mattered.
As far as I understand, all of omniverse is AU to Ultimate Alien. Which I am ok with. I liked Ultimate Alien because Ben really did show a lot of character development.

Omniverse was just a pokemon styled crash written to appeal to a new, younger viewer.

Eh, for all that that is certainly true, I still enjoy Omniverse sometimes. Also, I think the AU aspect is soft-reboot style, i.e. it's not quite the same but not different.

In other news, I watched the first two episodes of the new season fo Transformers Prime, and they're pretty cool.

Pretty cool isn't good enough for Transformers, but it's as much as we can hope for.

So I watched the end of Mystery Inc the other day.

It was awesome.

Can't believe I am saying that about a Scooby doo show, but it is. Mystery Inc is the best thing to come out of the franchise, IMO.

Mainly because they actually did some good character work. Most of the time Shaggy and Scooby are the only ones with recognizable characteristic (lovable cowards) with Velma as the smart one. This time the entire gang had some character development, especially Fred.

Seriously, Fred is my favorite character here. Sure, he's weird, has a kind of fetishistic love of traps, is a bit dim, but damn if he isn't badass when he needs to be. As a sidenote, Scooby was also badass in this.

Kind of a bitterweet end (especially on Mayor Jones' part. I really like the father/son relationship with Fred), but it did its job and ended the story it had began with the first ep.

And really in the midst of all the annoying cancellations going on over the last couple of years, it's good that at least one show ends well.

Fire and Ice, the 1983 movie.

It is flawed. Very, very flawed. Part of that's the serious limitations the animators had, but another part.... well, if they weren't deliberately being racist I have to wonder exactly what went through their heads when they had hordes of dark skinned, gibbering subhumans fighting a cast of very white skinned characters (and the main character is a blonde no less).
Also there are some story telling problems. We're told at the beginning that Larn (or is it Larm?) should follow his brother because the fight's hopeless. And then Larn sees a figure on a horse in the distance. Naturally I assumed that was his brother. Nope. My best guess? That one guy who runs away, awkwardly pauses next to Larn for a few moments and is never mentioned again in the movie was his brother.
Oh yeah, voice acting's not good.

But there's still something about it that makes me think that it almost works. If someone went over it, realized that the humans who lived at the equator would be darker skinned than the.... creatures who apparently live in the icy north, made the story more intelligent (and with better editing) and with the vastly better animation we have today this would be a fairly enjoyable work.

The new CGI TMNT. The one thing I really do like about this series is Splinter, he's very entertaining.

Splinter: Michelangelo you made a wide decision

Other turtles stare in shock

Splinter: Yes I never thought I'd hear myself say that either.

My personal favorite thing he does is the whole "no, and yes" thing. This iteration of Splinter is a Massive Troll, and I loves it.

As for what Cartoons I'm watching of late, I just watched the Dark Knight Returns two part movie, it was pretty good, though the movie made Old!Bruce's Mustache far more epic than I expected it to.

I also watched the first episode of Teen Titans Go! and that was weird. Not the same show at all as the original Teen Titans but not necessarily bad. The fact that it premired on a weeknight and seems to have a similar episode scheme to Regular Show and Adventure Time does give me hope for Young Justice though, foolish as that may be.

I always hated Miko.

I might have mentioned this somewhere else, but speaking of Transformers, I watched Beast Wars the other day, and converted three people! One had only watched the first 5 episodes, and claimed it was one of the most boring shows ever. I decided to show him the 3-parter leading up to the season 2 finale, and he did an abrupt turnaround. A bit spoilerific, but it did the job. The other two hadn't seen Beast Wars before, but after seeing it thought they would give the rest of the show a try. They also derided the CGI, saying it was pretty lame, until I pointed out that it was made 1997. They promptly shut up, and were actually wowed that the animation was that good fifteen years ago.

It's just a first episode thing unfortunately. Apparently the producers had to argue with Adult Swim on this. Adult Swim was saying that VB would be limited to 15 minute episodes if they did the 45 minute opener, but they got it back to the original 24 minute episodes.

Seeing how the network's treated it thus far, I probably already know the answer, but I gotta ask: Is the Thundercats reboot cancelled, or just on hiatus while they work on new eps?

Oh, you didn't hear? Thundercats has been cancelled for a while. No more new episodes for us.

It's pretty irritating when you consider Legend of Chima is almost identical but with much worse voice acting.

I just want good shows to come back on. At the moment there's about three shows that run that I even watch. Well four but one of them is just kind of background noise for me.

The reboot got scrapped and with good reason. After an epic two-part opening and three episodes that followed, the characters somehow each took a lesson from the book of being an arrogant one-direction douche; ultimately, the negative dynamism became extremely annoying and established impressions started getting torn down.

They had the chance to turn it into an animated Lord of the Rings with anthropomorphic cats and other sorts of animals. Instead what we got was a cartoon trying to be an anime. I got really bummed after that.

THE PROMISE. It was SO MUCH. Kind of felt like Naruto all over again.

It was still better than over half the shows that get replayed 5-6 times a day on the network.
