How about Teh Commander goes nameless for almost the entirety of the fic, with only descriptions to identify them by. At the very end we find out its someone from another Gainax series, say Simon, Noriko with an obviously fake moustache, or an adult Naota.

Here's a theory. you should actually stay in south-east asia for a while.
So...China? How much of that part of the world would be left if Antarctica melted, do you think? I think Indonesia might be a loss...

Speaking of which, can anyone tell me why Japan is still over water in a post Second Impact world? Is there an actual logical reason for it, or is it simply "this is an anime, therefore Japan is the center of the world"?
Oh easy. Let the actual scientist field this question.

The truth of the matter is that most of the islands that are in danger of being flooded by global warming are low elevation, tropical reef islands that are already near sea level. Japan would be largely spared because of its large relief compared to the rest of the Pacific Islands. Being a volcanic chain does have some benefits.

And before you try to argue with me on this, realize that I have an RL degree in Geology.
Well if we want to go with Blue Pencil's vision of a Post-Second Impact earth... I did happen to ask him about the whole rise in sea level thing in an E-mail a while back.
According to him, it was a 67-meter rise.
I assume this wouldn't be enough to sink Hokone... but we'd have to check the Topo-maps.

And where did you get your degree Da-Guru?
It wouldn't happen to be the University of Iowa, would it?

Arizona. And I know the numbers because I did a project on it for a climate change class. And I know about the past sea level changes from two classes: Quaternary Geochronology and Sedimentology.

So trust me when I say that 67 meters isn't really possible in 15 years. 2 meters is the estimate for the amount of water that's in ALL the ice in the glaciers around the world. You get higher sea level changes from thermal expansion and changes in the sea floor spreading rates. The latter displaces hundreds of meters of water across the world on million year timescales.

Don't forget that Second Impact was -not- a natural event. Adam might have pulled some crazy shit before he exploded.

That, and a whole continent blowing up would send a massive tsunami across the planet. That would have caused the most damage.
