And suddenly attempt at assaulting or kidnapping Louise got a whole more difficult. Things are going to be awkward for Wardes when he realized he tried to marry a... commoner.

Are there any big differences between the novels, anime, and manga?

Okay first ages I think its as such:
Saito - 17
Louise - 16
Henrietta - 17
Kirche - 18
Tabitha - 15
Siesta - 17?
Jessica - 16?
Guiche - 17

In plot terms there are many changes here and there, although the first 2 seasons overall plot were pretty accurate. Please note that I say this only for the OVERALL plot. Some changes I can remember are:

1) Anime: Only items meant to be used as weapons will activate the Gandalfr's powers.
Novel: Anything can activate Saito's powers if he wants to use it as a weapon.

2) Anime: Siesta's arc with Count Mott.
Novel: The arc does not exist

3) Anime: Louise's family were complete caricatures and things were extremely exaggerated for laughs.
Novel: Louise's family was more caring with the father key reason for not wanting his daughter to go to war was that he felt that the strategy of the invasion was bad and that he was concerned for her.

4) Anime: Saito's charge against the 70,000 and Louise having the flower that shows that Saito was alive was played differently. In the manga Louise did not have the flower.

And Season 3 is almost completely different and just lots of fanservice. Its really really really bad.

In terms of presentation the anime is played more for laughs and exaggerated to the point of being mere stereotypes. Characters are much more shallow in the anime and there is less dramatic tension. For instane, while Saito is more of a horndog in the novels, it is done in such a way to make it funny and is not SMASHED into your face. Also, when shown in relation to the sacrifice he made when he charged the army of 70,000 it makes you that much more impressed with how much he changed. Especially with Saito admitting that he was really really scared and did not want to do this and Derf saying at the last part that "Ah, you can no longer hear me can you?". Also, the relationship between Louise and Saito in all its complexities was much better developed.

There are also a thousand little differences such as Prince Wales being allowed to speak only a few lines before buying it in the anime to him having more presence in the novels, etc etc I can't really list all the differences because its really over 9000! ;p

Yes, the novels are way better than the Anime.

The setting is way more serious and the characters much more interesting.

For example after the battle in Albion Louise spends more than half a novel believing that Saito was dead, she has lost his connection with his familiar because he really died in that fight just to be brought back by elf magic.

Louise had to do a lot of growing up and soul searching during that time, in the Anime she founds out that he's alive at the end of that particular chapter.

There also is the fact that Louise's punishment are more justified in the novels, whereas the anime play it up as slapstick.

For example, that time when Louise beat Saito to unconsciousness with an actual whip ? It's was because Saito tried to strip and molest her in her sleep. THAT was completely justified as far as I am concerned.

Volume 2, Chapter 1. I was just reading it.

Saito was being genre-savvy about Louise being tsundere for him due to how she was behaving at the party with him, has Derflinger boost his ego to epic proportions and then takes it upon himself to "ravish" Louise.

Yeah, he pretty much tried to rape her under the belief that she secretly wanted him to do so.

And it really did not help matters for him that Louise was just having a dream about Saito taking Wardes place and being so assumptive that she desired him, pissing her off even moreso.

Yeah, Saito really had that one coming.

This is all so very, very Ranma. Powerful, but a selfish ass.

Exactly what Louise needs :D

And, crap, I forgot to post the story.

This is the first part to Chapter 3.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 3

ôLouise, put the wand down,ö Ranma spoke, slowly approaching her with his hands up.

ôI will not! Just how did you get my face!ö

The girl had backed herself all the way into the back of the lecture hall. There was no door at the top.

ôLouise, please. Put the wand down. We really donÆt want to have to re-clean the classroom again.ö

ôAnswer my question!ö

ôI donÆt know! Last I checked, I turned into a short redhead.ö Ranma felt his transformed body. ôWith bigger tits.ö

ôStop touching my body!ö

ôHey, itÆs my body at the moment!ö

Now Louise had fully put herself into a corner. ôWhat are you, some kind of doppelganger? Have you come to replace me? Th-thatÆs it, isnÆt it?ö

ôLouise, I have no intention of doing anything of the like.ö

ôYes you do!ö She was bordering hysterical. ôR-replace Louise thùô

Ranma made his move, knocking away the wand lightning quick and pinning her bodily against the wall, hand over her mouth.

ôLouise, shut up and listen,ö Ranma spoke in hushed tones. ôI donÆt know why IÆm here or why my curse is suddenly making me look like you, but itÆs not to replace you or anything.ö At least he didnÆt think so, given how screwy this world was being with him at the moment, but digression aside. ôWhat I do know is that I made a promise to help you out in any way that I can, and IÆm going to uphold that promise until I leave this place. So relax; youÆre scaring the spit out the guy. Okay?ö

Though Louise couldnÆt speak with her mouth, her reddish brown eyes did all the talking. And it was about to get emotional, quick.

Ranma looked down to the lecture floor at the bewildered young man. ôCould you give me a moment with myself?ö

The man nodded dumbly and started to leave.

ôOh, and can you bring me some hot water in about thirty minutes?ö

Another dumb nod.

He grinned. ôThanks!ö

The man left, closing the door. Ranma released his hold on Louise. And Louise fell into his û her chest, bawling.

Hoo boy, did he know how to pick themà

---

ôSo, you all right?ö Ranma asked, as they sat at the teacherÆs desk in the half-cleaned classroom.

ôYes, very much, thank you,ö Louise responded. ôDonÆt tell anyone about this, though. Especially not that Zerbst.ö

ôWho?ö

ôThe big-breast slut you ran into earlier.ö

ôAh, Kirche, was it?ö

She gave him a suspicious look. ôYou remember that name awfully well.ö

Ranma shrugged. ôShe had red hair like I did beforeà whatever happened. I thought the guy was just being weird with me earlier æcause he never met a redhead before. DidnÆt know I looked like you till now.ö

Louise æhmphed,Æ crossing her arms beneath her small breasts.

ôDoes everyone elseÆs spell blows up like yours?ö

She shrugged. ôNot that I know of.ö

ôHmmàö

ôWhat?ö

ôYou tried all five elements?ö

ôFive?ö

ôYeah, Mrs. Chevreuse said something about there being five elements û earth, fire, wind, water and void.ö

ôThereÆs only four we use. The other oneÆs lost.ö

Ranma made a face. ôHow did you guys lose an entire element?ö

ôNo one ever had an affinity for it since the Founder.ö

ôThe Founder?ö

ôBrimir. He created the lands as they are today û Tristain, Albion, Gallia and Romalia û using Void magic.ö

ôHow would youùô

ôOh, Brimiràö

Both Ranma and Louise looked up to see Mrs. Chevruese staring at them, her mouth agape.

ôTh-thereÆs tà tàtwo~oà twoà oh, myàö Her eyes rolled up and she started to fall. Ranma shot out and quickly caught the woman before she hit the floor.

ôWell, that went well,ö Louise remarked dryly, looking at Ranma.

Reading the manga at the moment. My impression is that the main characters are just as stupid as the NWC.

One Louise is already a near critical-mass amount of Tsundere, two would probably crack the world open like a ripe apple meeting a railgun.

If that magic sword tries that with Ranma then I hope the pig-tailed martial artist does to Derfflinger what Nergal did to Krollon the sentient mace by breaking it by the haft by whamming it against a stone or a stone wall and then dumping the wailing remains of the broken weapon into the bottom of a bay.

BTW: How are the elves portrayed in the novels, considering that the humans of Halkegenia seem to love the Screw You Elves trope so much, and we didn't get enough information on them from the anime adaptation like if they run on the Can't Argue With Elves theme?

Oh I do like this now all you have to do is remember that at this point Ranma doesn't give a rat's arse about Akane, and that Ranma really does have a sex drive and doesn't run around screaming "Ewww girls have cooties!" like a retarded ten year old.

There's not much information on them, they are quite powerful and prideful, they also consider most humans barbarians.

But so far it looks like most incidents have been caused by humans rather than the Elves.

And they can also wield magic way better than humans, or at least most of them.

The one elf we saw was also a complete pushover. He went down like a chump the moment Saito and Louise figured how to bypass his barrier.

That fight was disappointing. <_<

Well if he was willing to work for humans one can think that he wasn't that good to begin with.

But then again the reputation they have might be based in humans only facing the best warriors they have.

It sounds like humans hate the elves, so they made up stories on how the elves were responsible for human atrocities. Or at least that's how this thread makes it sound.

Well to be honest the more I know about Brimir the more I'm sure he wasn't a very nice guy.

It's like Alexander the great all you read and hear about him is usually all his accomplishments and conquests, you never hear about the cities or towns he razed and how many people was killed by him and his army.

He was quite powerful, yes, he had more than one familiar yes, he united the countries/conquered them so it's the old adage the winners usually get to say the story once the war is done.

I would say that he had a really good HR department and he wasn't all sun a peaches.

For what I have seen the humans where the instigators and Brimir was a power hungry conqueror.

Maybe Noboru Yamaguchi is reacting to the Screw You Elves trope backlash that usually erupts when people get sick of the Our Elves Are Better trope hype by using the Humans Are Bastards trope in his light novel. Let's just hope that it doesn't descend to both Our Elves Are Better and Can't Argue With Elves at the same time.
