A chat function

The hell? How was I supposed to get onto TFF when I wasn't even CLOSE to an interet connection last night?

Me and four or so other people on the chat. If you feel like chatting, then come on in.

Note: I'm not bored so no need to be scared.

Gabbly being ghey on me right now. All it is doing is... loading. And loading. And loading. :headbanger:

Something's wrong with Gabbly for me. It won't load completely. The little box is there, but it just says on "loading" with the little spinning icons in the user and text boxes. It's quite irking. What do I do to fix it?
Hmm. Looks like now I have that problem. <_<

Simmy, when that happened to me, I used a different web browser, and it worked just fine.

E.g., I use IE for Gabbly now, instead of Firefox.

I've been trying out another program, and it seems to work better than Gabbly. At the very least, I haven't had as many problems.

The only real issue is no sound that's been completely finished, and no messages of when people enter; though, you can toggle the user list if you want. Most importantly, though, you get the option of just opening it up in another window, rather than creating a new one.

http://www.yaplet.com/site-main.php

Maybe it would work for this site?

Looks slightly better and loads faster, but doesnt have a 'who is online' list.

Actually, it does.

See that number on the upper right? Click on it and a list will appear on the bottom of the screen.

The window symbol in the upper right will also open it up in a new window, while that mail link is utterly useless, as far as I am concerned.

To whisper, you click on someone's name and type a message. To stop whispering, either close the list or click on the name again.

hmm...I'm a bit off with the no sound thing, so I practically have to check in from time to time to see who's talking and stuff, but no biggie.

It doesn't have that damn ad like gabbly of which I find as a big plus. I kind of think that ad was one of the reasons of why it took too long to load...that or too java/flash/whatever scripted.

Being able to refresh without the chat resetting (if you make the chat seperate from the main browser that is) is nice.

More or less, unless the sound part gets installed, I'd say that it's a decent alternative to gabbly. Just have to get used to it basically.

edit: okay there is sound, but it causes the chat to pop up fin front of the forum (I detached it) whenever someone says something apparently. that's kind of annoying.

I cant try at the moment...I miss my laptop... at the moment. I have to use my PS3 for the internet...having no keyboard makes for slow chats...hell, this post took a bit of time...

I'm guessing correct that you don't have a USB keyboard or something?

Rejoice. There's now an IRC alternative to Gabbly. :)

#TFF is available on IRCnet.

Though if HawkGTS is really me or just the worlds most unresponsive bot, is a state secret... ;D

No program is needed ( though it's certainly much better... ), a web-based IRC client like http://webchat.xs4all.nl/ works as well.

I'll assume that everybody who uses a real client knows how to get on IRCnet and onto #TFF from there, so I'll settle for http://webchat.xs4all.nl/ instructions.

Select IRCnet as your network.

Choose a nickname.

Select other as chatchannel and type in TFF after the #.

Click go.

And you're on.

Woo! IRC! I'll have to see if I even remember to log onto that server though, not a server I particularly visit. Most of the channels I visit tend to be in dejatoons, with a couple in irchighway and rizon (the last two being the anime/manga leech channels :p).

For all those who use Trillian, here are the directions to setting it up for IRC. These instructions are for IRCnet and the TFF room in particular, but they can be adapted to work for any IRC room on any server.

1) Go to Manage My Connections, under any of the color dots or the file menu under connections.

2) Click on the add a new connection button and choose IRC.

3) In the Server Alias box, write whatever you wish to call the connection, in this case IRCnet works fine.

4) Click the ... button, which brings up a list of servers. Find the IRCnet folder, and double click to open it, find a server from the list that is close to your location, click ok.

5) Write your Nickname aka Display name in the third box. You can write whatever you want in the last two, or leave them blank, in my case they copied the nickname on their own.

6) Select Auto-connect at start up if you so choose, and click the connect button.

7) Once connected, which is shown by the white dot staying lit, click on the dot and select Join a Channel, enter tff. It may take a while for it to load the room.

If you cannot stay connected, then make sure you are not connected to the irc server on another program. This server does not allow clones.

I'm away on a four-day course for union-selected corporate board members, so HawkGTS_Away is now even less likely then usual to respond on the #tff channel for a couple of days onwards. :) I've noticed that lately I forget that IRC is even running and thus doesn't even check it to see if the channel is alive or not.

There is HawkGTS_Laptop however, which isn't some sort of cheap knock-off copy or something, but me hanging out on IRC on my laptop in the evenings.

Out of curiosity, to those who use it, has anyone else been having more problems then usual with gabbly, or has it just turned on me?

Well, I've been having some issues with Gabbly recently. But, besides the fact that it no longer logs the chat (at least, to a point. I.e. in case you went one-sided. You might catch up on what you missed), I assumed all problems I had, were the usual ones. One-sidedness, occasional Gabbly death here and there, etc.

hmm, then maybe it is just me, because it has not let me join for the past 2 days or so. Or rather, it doesn't fully join, basically such that I am basically one sided the moment I join...oh well...

That actually happened to me before. Pissed me off. It eventually corrected itself like most Gabbly problems but yeah...

#72
I've been one-siding the entire night. I don't appear on the list when I enter, and I can't see anything anyone might be saying. I don't even figure into the chat headcount.

This is quite bothersome.

hmm, yours is the same problem as mine ndf, so it may just be that gabbly is just having more problems then usual at the moment.

edit: hmm, just let me in. could be a one time thing, could mean that the problems are starting to subside, who knows.

Funny thing is, it's just now stopped working for me.
Heh, the only major problem I have with Gabbly, beyond the now usual one sided conversations that I've grown used to, is the fact that most of the times when I log in, it's transparent, very annoying. :sisi:
