Lost Star, you're quite right that their reactions make sense. The problem is, there really aren't many reactions good, reasonably objective people would have when hearing Zuko's story as told in Embers. Those reactions pretty much span the range of the reactions we've seen in the story.

As a reader, though, the difficulty is that those reactions seem to happen a lot. It's gotten repetitive. I'm not sure how it could be avoided, but it's irritating because it feels like I'm getting hit over the head with, "Ohhh *swoon* Zuko is so noble!"

And I don't really think the differing perspectives angle has gone over people's heads, Lost Star-that's pretty fundamental to the story after all.
In this case it is a matter of perspective yet again isn't it? I think it's an entertaining story fleshing out a world, and making the characters seem more human, flaws and all.

A term has been coined for dual bender's, Yaoren, and there are now two of them.

Shirong is now a firebender/earthbender mix, Apparently.

I don't read Avatar fanfiction very often, because I only read thing's I find on the rare occasions I look, or that get recommended by someone else who's taste I somewhat trust. Most of the people on this forum are such people, but there are exception's...*cough*Dumbledork*cough* And Avatar rec's are extremely rare here.

So I don't have the normal biases people who read it often get, as I'm newish to it, so most of the problem's you guy's are having I don't even notice, the pairing thing with Mai and Zuko with OC's went right over my head, I did notice the hamfisted pairing sink, though I didn't think it's that big a deal, second-third cousin's is distant enough that it seems about right for noble families, as far as I know.

But then, from what I know, the most distantly someone in our world can be related to someone else is fiftieth cousins, so...

As for the Gaang's ignorence... Aang is TWELVE, him not knowing much about the darker aspect's of the world is EXPECTED, Sokka and Katara are from a tiny Inuit inspired tribe in the six month night zone, them knowing fuck all about other nation's intimately enough to know most of the thing's being argued about is expected.

And Toph doesn't talk much about culture and such because she's trying to run away from it. So her saying nothing under the assumption they knew all this is also expected.

I understand that. It sounds as though you're not understanding my complaint is all. We're getting hit over the head repeatedly with how noble and self-sacrificing Zuko is, in spite of his awful childhood. Even though that's true, it remains off-putting to hear about it over and over again. My complaint isn't about content, it's about technique.

I noticed that issue as well, but it didn't kill the story for me. In particular, I think we're coming to the end of that section. Recently, Zuko has been meeting a lot of new people and they've been slowly learning about his history and abilities. As such, we've had a lot of reaction shots of what each of the new people think as they learn about Zuko and Iroh. Now, the story seems to have settled with the new characters and they are all fully informed, so I think we'll have fewer reaction shots.

[Rant]
Partly, it may be because unlike other fics where a character is regularly praised, the character in question doesn't either go on an author-fueled power-trip and back-talk everyone in sight without consequences or sink into constant self loathing so that everyone else needs to keep praising him; this Zuko seems to have a reasonable idea of his own abilities but he's still properly cautious/respectful of others' power.
[/Rant]

On a separate note, the "lazy characterization switch" mentioned earlier threw me for a loop as well, but it seems to have been almost a complete non-factor. Given that canon shows us "mellow" Zuko (e.g. "Lets make some tea") I think this version of Zuko stays within the bounds of reasonable behavior.

I think the homophobia was a nice touch. It really adds a certain element of douchiness to the general asshatery of the whole "I'm better than you" undertone of your post.

But, it's not as good as the sheer ridiculous of insulting people with what essentially amounts to a request. I mean, start a topic labeled "Avatar Fic: Embers" in the Cartoon Talk section, post quotes of relevent points, and the moral high ground is under your feet. But now?

Now, you are the biggest problem in this thread. You might derail the argument about Embers, but it will mostly be with people attacking you for being a dick.

I quite agree that was a very Dickish way to make a request on Psycko's part But the Thread you one daniel_gudman suggested is now in existence here http://z14.invisionfree.com/The_Fanfiction...showtopic=17133 so, Party in the new thread I guess?

I think the technical problem in that story is summed up like this: we're in the heads of too many people. Zuko, Katara, Earth Kingdom Family, Dai Li agent, Earth Kingdom Healer, Iroh.

Now, if those people are spread all over hell and back, that can work...but in this story, they're not only in the same city, they're actually in a pretty confined area, and continue dealing as a group with the same issues. Don't get me wrong-I still dig the story to pieces. It's on my alert list and will stay there. I don't generally make complaints about stories I don't like-I just stop reading them.

For the record, FagHag isn't homophobic... in fact, according to Wikipedia...

Fag hag is a gay slang phrase referring to a woman who either associates mostly or exclusively with gay and bisexual men, or has gay and bisexual men as close friends. The phrase originated in gay male culture in the United States and was historically an insult

Fag hags are frequently stereotyped as outgoing women who are seeking a substitute for heterosexual relationships, or who are secretly (or openly) sexually attracted to gay men

Now... back on subject...

Siblings Or Not
ôThe best part of all of this,ö Toph said, interrupting the slightly tense atmosphere, ôis just thinking about what the children will be like.ö
Things Fall Apart
Katara, youÆre in the Fire Nation now. Where Mai of the thousand hidden knives came from. Where Tye Lee the Pink Cloud of Doom came from. Where AZULA came from! Where people who cut down all challengers are respected above all others! That was the reason Azula was so popular as a child and I wasnÆt! I was too nice and tractable!

Just be your ordinary, ornery self and everything will work out just fine.
Both of these are by the same writer. The first is a one shot, the other is mostly a collection of oneshots, although some follow on from each other.

As the first chapter demonstrates it's not wise to steal the girlfriend of a mobile, and reusable, nuclear bomb.

Chapter 6 is the best.

ôThis cityàö he trailed off, lost, looking at his boyÆs too-still face. ôThis city,ö he repeated, voice gaining strength, ôhas taken all my children from me!ö He tore his gaze from his nephew to focus hard eyes on the milling throng outside the teashopÆs door.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

And thatÆs how the great city of Ba Sing Se burned to the ground.

Aren't there any good fics with an awesome Aang? Most of the recent updates here were pretty Zuko-centric. Too Zuko-centric, for my tastes.

"What's your plan, Avatar?"

"Dunno." He shrugs and snaps open his glider. "Win, I guess."

Are Ozai and Iroh even born yet?

The fic has some timeline errors. Iroh apparently has been born, although he shouldn't have been born for another year according to the Avatar Wikia, which has information straight from the show's creators. And Jeong Jeong's apparently a young man already even though he's four or so years younger than Iroh in canon and so shouldn't be born for another five years. Ozai's over twenty years younger than Iroh; he shouldn't exist yet.

Embers by Vathara has been updated http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5398503/25/

Some will no doubt be astounded to find out that I in fact like this chapter a great deal more then some of those preceding it.

Taking her focus off Aang, Zuko and Katara has really improved my enjoyment of this chapter.
