Strange Bedfellows by Menamebephil

AU, Book 2. In which Zuko never left Iroh in the forest, and Toph never reunited with the Gaang, instead deciding to follow around the funny old man that drank too much tea and his bipolar nephew. Not that that has much bearing on this story or anything.

We need more Aang/Mai.

I can't help it that he posted one good story in the middle of three bad ones.

It's just too bad that What Meets the Eye has the wrong pairing to really shine. Though Toko is a bit different.

Morality Chain by Pureauthor

"You're my brother. That's got to count for something. Right, Zuzu?" If Azula and Zuko had always cared for each other, how different would their live's paths have been?

That was a most Satisfying recommendation.
Also... Bumi is made of equal parts awesome and Beastly!

Also What meets the Eye has proven fairly interesting as well.

So very true. It's just nice have me a reminder.

Now if only someone would capture Bumi's fight with Aang on a video so I didn't have to search through the entire episode. But really, Bumi and Toph are the only real earth benders.

It's more like they're the only really awesome earth benders, although the Dai Li do demonstrate really good earth bending with their rock gloves and boots.

Too bad the Dai Li didn't show up before Bumi and Toph. They looked pathetic by comparison. Though they did have decent teamwork.

The best I can say for the Dai Li is they had great control and technique but never really showed the kind of raw Power we see from greats like Bumi and Toph.

Frankly that makes sense to me as the Dai Li are basically "dangerous" expert mooks.

For the most part the Dai Li are and excellent example of what happens when you give earth benders legionnaire type discipline. What an individual lacks in ability the whole makes up for in unity.

Toph and Bumi are Earth benders at the top of the game, the highest of the high, the best of the best, Raw power and PERSONAL technique, to the point where they no longer see Bending as a tool but as an extension of their own persons. I believe it is that outlook that really gives them the power they have.

Of all the bender types, earth benders, and more specifically the earth benders of Ba Sing Sae, have show the highest amount of group utility on pure bending alone, though this is probably just the result of actually having a stable city in which they could use the time to come up with uses and practice in unison rather than any deficiency in the others in comparison.

Earth Benders just get the Love.

I've been looking around... and I've come to wonder, are there ANY good fics focused mainly on Ty-Lee?

I mean Azula and Mai get the spotlight all the time, so it seems like Crazy and Gloomy generate far more interest than Happy...
Of course they do.

Why do you think there are so many stories focusing on Wackjob McEmoScar? Or that horrible bullshit called Zutara.

Most people find doom and gloom really hot. Though why that is the case I have no idea.

People have always found dark and brooding to be hot. Lord Byron was freakin' crazy, and he had women falling over themselves to sleep with him. It's as if someone sees a crazy psycho, notes that they are of the opposite gender, and their brain glitches, making them think "Only I can save them from themselves," as opposed to the more rational, "Holy shit, stay the fuck away!"

EDIT: In some cases, I can see some sort of justification. If you take Azula as an example, her psychological issues seem to come mainly from a fear of abandonment and trying to live up to her father's expectations. It is not unexpected for people to imagine circumstances which could 'help' her, such as her mother not being exiled, etc etc.

Gloom is hot when it wears lingerie made out of pointy, sharp throwing weapons and seems to be restraining some serious dragon lady.

Azula is hot because she's effective, powerful, and batshit insane, and also keeps hot girls as her trusted leutenants.

I mean, I wouldn't want to marry her, but she'd be one hell of a fling.

I will agree that Ty Lee is the hottest of the three, but that's only because she's a bootybender. If she wasn't that flexible, she wouldn't be any hotter than your average genki girl, and that's not very hot.

New rule : Booty is now an official element, complete with it's own country and place in the Avatar reincarnation.

I've seen a lemon fic with that theme, but I can't remember where, it sucked in a bad way.

All hail Ty-Lee, Greatest of the Booty Benders to have ever bent a booty!!!

Anywho... I don't know, I've only actually seen 1 good Azula fic that actually DEALS with her Issues rather than skips around them for to build up some romance bullshit or some sort of weird AU plot nonsense, and I don't even actually remember what its name was. And 1 other good Azula fic which Zeebee introduced (Morality Chain) that doesn't really deal with her issues so much as gives her a good way around the deepest of them and works its way though the aftermath.

Anywho... More Ty-Lee, cause booty benders need love too. (I dont know, Genki girl characters tend to seem the most interesting to me, mainly cause to be that happy seeming something is usually wrong with them to be explored, or they become the best creature to pile the distress upon... I'm not much of one for romance or drama, but i do so love explorations of a character's.... character.)

One good fic about Azula dealing - as well as she can in a quite unhospitable environment - with her issues I can recommend is In the Madhouse by Ciceronis. It is self-explaining, for the most part, and it presents some of the best Alternate Character Interpretation I've seen to date.

Hmm, thanks for the recommend. I think I'd seen this one before but skipped it over for some reason.
(The auto-sorting algorithm in my head probably looked at its title premise and made me forget about it existing... 1 too many horrible fics with similar types of premise/made it look like a possible Modern AU fic... a fic type which i Truly Despise.)

Down Among The Dead by HVK

After the war, Fire Lord Zuko promotes seeing the world among his people, so they better understand it; Mai goes to the ruins of the Southern Air Temple with Avatar Aang, and is troubled by what she sees.

Meh. There are way too many errors and tense issues in that story. And the actual content isn't anything spectacular either.

Found a good one focused on Ty-lee and Azula. No romance mush to muck things up, this is straight up dealing with Ty-Lee taking care of her friend after the series ends. Very intimate and compelling.

The problem with In the Madhouse is that it's turned into a bash-fic, and those are so very tedious. It started out quite strong. The characters were well-rounded and interesting, the premise was plausible, all of the characters themselves were plausible, but it started to lean off the rails right about when the Doctor was transformed from a calm, cool professional in the beginning to a bumbling, incompetent, impotent jealous man who let his goon control his life.

It veered completely off the rails once it became clear that, in the story, all of Azula's many faults were either not her fault at all, really, or else excusable, and every single other character in the story had very, very badly failed her-and that was their fault.

Zuko the lazy idiot, Mai the sneering hypocrite, Ty Lee the dim-witted faker, Iroh the drunken degenerate, etc. etc. *shrug* Very tedious so far. It would take a pretty dramatic change in characterization to get me really interested again, but the author seems quite taken with this 're-interpretation'.
