Ugh, aren't people done and tired of that fic already?? Eva is no fun when no one has died.
Oh, I don't know... I've rather enjoyed the fic so far, and the latest chapter has quite the mindfck for poor Shinji...
Hmmm... I've tried, I just can't seem to get interested in that story.

I'm mostly astounded by the fact that he's squeezed over sixty chapters outta this thing.

It is incredibly formulaic, making that a great deal easier.

Durandall can pull off a trope fic. GreggHL cannot.

I tried reading it, but just couldn't get into it. I get the feeling that it's become too much and gone on too long, like other fics that got popular on TvTropes.

Well, there's a difference between using Tropes for inspiration from time to time... and simply rattling them off to name-check as many as you can solely to appease the Tropers.

There's some useful stuff in there... I even specifically referenced the thing in a plot relevant manner. It's existence in a recogniseable manner in 2015 to a character familiar with it currently is a plot point (Though non obviously, I had to point it out to prereaders who thought I was being unsubtly twee).

I could've used any website for that... and I made a point not to actually name it outright because it's awkward and jarring. When you start namechecking Tropes, or overincluding them things start getting messy. I use the site to get ideas for how to do things, more than 'what' to do.

Okay now I can see why you said what you did.

FYI: You're essentially trying compare Carmel apples with car batteries.

Trying to grade every fic especially something unique like ND by Durandall's formula is pretty self limiting.

ND is like Carrotglance. You love it or hate it. I'm not the first category.

I'd agree but not really for the same reasons.

Carrotglance's problem seems to be he keeps writing the same story.

Looking at Walking in the shadow of Drams and Nobody Dies as well as Your happy years, that is becoming Greggs problem as well.

John Biles posted the final chapter of Children of an Elder God on the FFML (for those of us who are still subscribed...)

Anyways, the FFML archive of the post is here: <a href='http://www.chez-vrolet.net/pipermail/ffml/2010-August/002673.html' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.chez-vrolet.net/pipermail/ffml/...ust/002673.html</a>

And the old chapters are here: <a href='http://www.thekeep.org/~rpm/eva/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.thekeep.org/~rpm/eva/</a>

I haven't read it yet, busy with work. But it's John Biles

This. His stories are becoming more and more like Nobody Dies. Considering Nobody Dies jumped the shark through crack overdose, this doesn't bide well.

Unlike someone established and comfortable with himself like Carrotglance, Gregg's writing's still trying to find his optimum stride, and besides Walking in the Shadow of Dreams and Nobody Dies aren't even finished yet.

On top of that if you were paying attention Walking in the Shadow of Dreams is in the middle of a rewrite and it is a spin off of Nobody Dies so it only stands to reason there should be some overlap.

If you want to see what I mean about Gregg's improvement as a writer, read Father knows best and then compare that to ND.

Did he actually learn how to write in proper 3rd person style? If not, not interested.

I enjoy ND - although not as much as I enjoyed Gregg's old Breath of Fire fics. Damn, but they were awesome.

totally agree with nobody dies on that point but given what I know of the the storyline for Walking in Shadow of Dreams and its rewrite they should be different but remember that their both Neon Genesis so of course their going to seem similar.

I like Walking in the Shadow more then Nobody dies.

Walking was similar to Nobody Dies well before the rewrite. The characterization is basically the same +10 years. Hell, ND!Rei is pre-rewritteWD!Rei, just at age 16. Your Happy Years characterization is flat out Nobody Dies, plus 5 years.

Shinji is a snarky "average guy", Asuka is the woobie, Rei is a raging (and on occasion, raping) nymphomaniac. If I were Gregg, there'd now be following half a dozen posts about how awesome, new, awesome, unique and awesome this spin on NGE characters is.
