SEED parallels the original Gundam Series extremely ("THIS IS NO ZAKU! NO ZAKU!".... I so cracked up at that :D) at times. But, with all respect to Char Aznable (one of the three coolest giant robot pilots ever), Mu La Flaga wins in all aspects because he's .... well, he's Mu. The guy who made the otherwise quite tragic GS series so much fun
And Mu is perhaps the singlemost awesome survivor, ever. How many other pilots can boast having survived 50 episodes (or rather, ~35) in a sub-par flying machine against Gundam-class giant robots?

That, and his ladyfriend is hotter than those of Kira/Athrun/everyone else in the entire damn series. Ramius makes uniforms look good.
Point.

Still...no one else in Gundam-verse can boast going through as many Mobile Suits like tissue paper as Char can.

Not to mention that he's one of the select few pilots who can show the main character that Gundam's are not the be all and end all of mobile suits. :hail:

Out of interest, if Char (and presumably Mu) is among your three coolest giant robot pilots ever, who are the rest?
Char; Mu; Roger Smith (The Big O; even if the robot looks terrible, that guy has /style/ oozing out of his ears)

Hmmm... if limiting yourself to Gundam, I can't gainsay you, as I don't watch it. But I can think of a lot of mecha pilots for such a list. Like ones from Full Metal Panic, Vandread, Dual, Martian Successor Nadesico, heck even Magic Knight RayEarth, etc...

I wonder if Gin Rei from Giant Robo counts as a mecha pilot? :snigger: She 'guides' the Giant robo almost as much as the guy, whatsisname, does, and is a lot nicer on the eyes. :snigger:

I watched 'em all.

Kazuki of Dual is the worst offender in terms of "Cool Robot Pilot", because, well, he isn't, wasn't, and will never be even remotely "cool", therest of the cast is but eye-candy meant to fawn over the hero. End of Story.

btw... Sousuke... hell, he's a commando from hell, but a.) I don't like the Arbalest design, b.) HE ARGUES WITH HIS OWN AI and c.) Weber/Mao > Sousuke/Kaname :>

The gundam metaseries are surprisingly good for giant robot anime shows, or, rather, they're generally the best out there. They usually have a real, consecutive storyline, rather than the 13/13 (13 Villain-of-the-Day episodes, 13 "Storyline" episodes after that, stupid bait/catch  ) ones. These storylines are usually fraught with tragedy, peril and the portrayal of man's ambitions/excesses (the reason why I like Rau Le Creuset so much. He has a reason for being a nihilist bastard) and the results thereof.

That, and I think I'll always love them for producing the greatness that is the Buster Rifle. Seriously, the nerd in me will always love the insane overkill of that weapon, esp. given the fact that it is in the hands of the series most antagonistic, asocial and thoroughly ruthless mass-murderer ever (and, despite all that, Heero Yuy is ten times more awesome than the Neo-Wannabe-Ruthlessasocialantagonistic guy, aka Uchiha Sasuke. Heero makes Dark&Brooding look good. Sasuke looks stupid with it.)

edit:

In fact, even Saruwatari Go from Shikon Gattai Godannar is cooler than Yotsuga Kazuki. And I won't go into detail how utterly, totally and completely sucky Godannar is

further edit:

I love Dual. Seriously. The concept of the story is fucking awesome, the execution is so not at times (read: every time Kazuki is on screen.)

Agreed...Kazuki was just one of the many clones trying to emulate Gainax's Shinji Ikari codex. (with a dash of Tenchi added)

Problem is, they didn't dare go all the way with him. Leaving them with an awkward character stuck on the crossroads.

At least with Shinji Ikari...he could lay claim to the fact that he was the first anti-hero/giant robot pilot of his kind. Not to mention that when he really decides to man-up...it actually means something.

The Heavy Arms Kai Custom was the only improved custom gundam in the entire movie. It actually had more missiles than the original and tt had two doublegatling cannons instead of one. The only thing it lost was the ability to fight in close quarter combat since it no longer had a heat knife.

Didn't know you had a thing for Sean Connery.

:p

... now I want someone to write an AU where Sousuke is an actual highschool student _and_ military otaku _because_ he sees giant robots/alternate world military operations ... whereupon he gets dumped into the Dual storyline.

The madness.

THE MADNESS!

Griever-han, everyone has a thing for Sean Connery. Everyone. Those who don't admit it simply have yet to realise the truth. ;)

Truer words were never spoken. And I'm not ashamed to admit it, too.

However, Canon!Sousuke starting to see GIANT ROBOTS (and the AS are small compared to their Dual counterparts) doing battle.... just imagine him slowly trying to convince himself that Kaname was right, he really is crazy.

Heavily armed soldier/boy in love + "Hallucinations" = Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~~~~d.

All of your mecha are now invalid.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

My vote stands for the original Geta, the only robo that proudly displays a beer belly. Gurren Lagan was so bad that Gainax's CEO left the company after the sixth episode.

What are you talking about? He didn't resigned because of the series. He did it because he actually insulted the users of 2ch, and 2ch is a fucking internet mafia worse than 4chan. And in order to save face for the company, he stepped aside. Get your facts right. Aand WATCH Gurren Lagann, it's epic.

Do you even watch anime. I'm now positive you didn't watch it at all.

If these clips you posted are any indication of the series at all it's right up there with Godannar on my list of "things I shall never watch (again)". Unless it's got a storyline so incredibly moving that even marble weeps tears of blood, these scenes above are so incredibly turn-off... brr. I just hate all series where the pilots have to scream out stupid attack moves. That's why I like the gundam series. Beam rifles may not look as awesome as a 1km long drill that overpenetrates your enemy, but they do the job.

As for mecha designs: While I don't like the character design of the series, Escaflowne (TV series) has the most beautifully animated one-on-one mecha duels I've seen so far.

Given that one of the pilot has a few attacks like "WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM KICK", I think you won't like this series. Too bad for you, since it's got everything a super robot fan could want.

Your lack of manly, burning passion aside, this is the worst reason i've ever read for not looking at a show.

At least i watch a show properly before passing judgement on it. Ugh.

Too be fair, Gurren Lagann has the most funny Gattai sequence ever (at least for the first time).

Meh. Saw the first ep of GL, it didn't make me care enough to burden my aging hard drive with it. To be perfectly frank, it still seems like more Gainax stuff I can't be bothered with.

Oh, and Cornuthaum? Shazam. :p

For the record, I think Deathscythe Hell Kai was a bit of an improvement over its previous version. Ability to become completely invisible, even to visual scanners, more devilish look to up the intimidation factor during surprise attacks, and getting rid of that retarded second scythe blade? Pluses, all.

Doesn't excuse the ridiculous redesign for Wing Zero Kai, but still...

Deathscythes Custom was better looking it just was worse in terms of weaponry. The only two gundams that got an upgrade were the Heavy Arms and the Sandrock. The Heavy Arm Kai Custom obviously had two double gatlings instead of one and the less obvious upgrade was it had like twice the amount of missles. It did lack in close quarters combat though. The Sandrocks upgrade can't really count since anything could have made it suck less.

I did watch it, the only positive thing I saw in that show were the shitzus and the bunny girls. Its from the same crew that did abenobashi, the only other gainax anime that gets my negative vote.
