Kind of a random thought, and it would only make for a short parody or something, but what the hell, here goes:
What if Neville didn't just kill Nagini, but with the full power of the Sword of Gryffindor given to him, he killed Voldemort too while Harry was 'dead'?
Neville has been stuck with 'might-have-beens' all his life: Might have been the Boy who Lived, might have been just like his dad as his gran wanted, might have been a chickenshit if not for making friends with Harry, Ron and Hermione, not to mention Lupin's encouragement.
Rather than being bound by fate, a slave to it like Harry becomes, Neville defies convention and takes charge, kicking ass and taking names. Including pulling the Sword of Gryffindor out of the Sorting Hat while it's on fire.
What I'm getting at is that Neville would give Fate and Prophecy the finger. Screw the fact he's not the Boy Who Lived, screw the fact he's not Harry Bloody Potter, screw the fact that Voldemort didn't mark him as his equal! He's a true Gryffindor who showed himself a true hero, and by killing Voldemort himself he'd prove that the wizarding world doesn't have to be slaves to Fate or Prophecy.
That right there would have made up for most of Book Seven for me. I could have forgiven nearly everything else if Harry had woken up to see Neville being cheered, holding the head of Voldemort in one hand and the Sword in the other.
So, it would probably only work for a one-shot deal... But there are a few other things you might be able to do with it. Though personally, like most fanfic authors I'd prefer to imagine that Books 6 and 7 didn't happen.
Still, just a thought.
