Ranma ½ Is it any good

I guess that depends on why you find yourself not very interested.

The setting never really changes from "needlessly sexy magical dystopia," but once Ranma shows up at least there's action!

I haven't read it in, like, a year, so I'm behind an update or two.

Have you read the rest of his stuff, the Shadow Chronicles or whatever? That's pretty similar in style.

I guess I'd say I really like it, but it's a specific kind of story that I'm not always in the mood for.

In my opinion 'On a Clear Day' is awesome and I wish Mark would update it more often than he has.

Yeah, the first half of the first chapter is a lot of prophetic junk but it gets better. Much better.

You should be fine, then; I don't think he's updated since two years ago.

I personally like it better than the rest of the Shadow Chronicles, and it helps that it's far enough apart from the other stories that it could very well be a stand alone. It's long as fuck, though, and you might want to keep some notes, due to a huge cast of characters and the spiderweb of relationships. Also, it's pretty dark.

I tried reading "On a Clear Day" several years ago and found it to be immensely dull. Haven't tried it again since.

I tend to reread it from time to time. generally I make sure I've reread the last two chapters every few months to insure it is fairly fresh in case of next update.

And I want to see Ranma do the nasty with Minako and Rei. With all the occasions he's had so far...

GO MOTHERFUCKER. WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?

Also the other thing I noticed was that at times it seems like Ranma pops in says something and that gets taken in and then he fades away like doesnt seem like he's there...

Eh...

Also hyperlink key? Awesome.

Bump, Shadow Chronicles and OACDYCSF are kinda... I dunno... boring. Took characters I liked and basically stuck them into moulds that they don't really fit. Also seem to be based on hair colour, those with dark hair seem to have sordid/evil pasts, and the lighter the colour the more cheerful/Happy go lucky.

Bored me fast.

On A Clear Day You Can See Forever is an epic combination of fanfic with high and modern fantasy. Plenty of action, comedy, mystery, smut and horror. Ranma is still Ranma, but also definitely changed by what's happened to him. Reading the earlier stories will give you an idea why but it's not necessary. The alternate universe SM cast all have an interesting and dramatic history that clearly affects their character and personality yet leaves them recognizable. If you're totally allergic to worldbuilding then Clear Day is not for you, but I like the characters and their place in the society and mythology.

I highly recommend it. It's a far cry better than another cannon rehash or cliched transplant crossover.

Minako does not fit that mold in that story. Blonde hair, and was taken as a soft marker (re slave), forced to steal, dark past...

They ALL have dark pasts.... lessee what I can recall off-hand:

In astronomical order!:

Mercury: Ami: Astral Diver for abusive orphan collector. Sometimes, in the Ether, something awful eats you, like what happened to the boy Ami liked. So she fed abusive orphan collector to pure crazy.

Venus: ex-Soft Marker. ex-Slave. Burgler. Parents were archaeologists? Something horrible ate them.

Moon: Usagi: Actually, I don't think she's had a Terrible Past Reveal. It's been implied pretty strongly though she's the one with the functional, non-screwed up childhood.

Mars: Rei: Rivals with current Supreme Crazy Bitch of the Sexy Nuns of Dark Goddess. Raised by Sexy Nuns to be a Crazy Bitch. Basically betrayed everything she was to join Usagi.

Jupiter: Makoto: Orphan that joined a gang of desperate street orphans. Was a Dickensian Street Urchin.... until the gang was infiltrated and mostly annhilated by one of the Sexy Nuns' Crazy Bitches.

Saturn: Hotaru: Only Don Peal in whole world (I thought that Ranma would have encountered halflings like her in the past as a plot point, but I guess not). Anyway, her mom was Seduced by Sexy Evil Vampire Magic. Dad driven crazy. Mom ran off with vampire (no free will left). Dad did best to raise her; his best wasn't very good on account of Mind Rape from aforementioned Vampire. Bonus: Said Vampire is AU counterpart of Big Bad from Shadow Chronicles, is shaping up as Big Bad, Take Two.

Uranus: Past not Revealed.

Neptune: Past not Revealed.

Pluto: Time Witch. Knew Saturn somehow? Past not revealed.

...

hmmn. I guess, if your childhood was talked about, it sucked? That's what I'm getting out of this story.

Truth, but the cause runs the other way: talking about a happy childhood is less interesting so it doesn't make it in the story.

Considering not even the enemies have had a good childhood... I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion.

Considering that their childhood fall on after-Long Night... It had to be expected. Or, more precisely, it not only a heros or villians have crappy childhood. It more like a entire generation have childhood like that.

This is a pretty broad question but how are CRose's stories?

They're not that bad, aside from his Ranma-chan the whore stuff.

Though his spelling and grammar are pretty bad. CRose switches between present and past tense in his stories a lot. Sentences start in past tense, and then suddenly it's present tense. Add the more than occasional spelling error, and it can become irritating.

He supposedly has a pre-reader, but that guy/girl has to be totally incompetent.

Meh... only his lemons have that.

- 'Prime Attitude' - I liked.
- 'Princess of the Moon' - been hoping he would update, but I consider it unlikely.
- 'Strange Days' - was... strange. I liked parts of it, but you have to get used to the ACC.
- 'The Replacement' annoyed me a bit. The Ryoko parts were good though.
- 'Uncles' I quite liked, it was a sort of offshoot he made after coming across the Uncles betfits, the problem was his story did not quite fit the parameters.

The rest is a mixed bag of spamfics, and stories I either did not care for much, or ones he abandoned and even removed from his site and his FF.NET account.

What about dswynne's works? I mean, this author wrote lots of big stories, but it seems as if nobody here talks about them at all. I never felt compelled to read them myself mainly because of my disinterest with ST fandom, but perhaps they are just the thing to get me started? What do you think?

His stories tend to range between mediocre and poor. I would suppose it's rather easy to write as much as he has when you don't have to worry about actual quality.

That depends... the one of his I liked most is the one not on FF.NET, it is over at Ranmafics.

I notice a lack of consistency when I tried to read his stuff. It almost seems like Ranma and Usagi are different people across the various stories. Not to mention the obscenely large amount of crossovers and powerups he gives to them. Also hard to really understand what what he writes because of lack of decent writing skills.
