You have got a good point with funnels. The Alpha Aziel has Funnel Bits in its back end, after all. Might borrow that for the Jaguarandi...

Oh, that's right - Alpha had Funnel housing in the rear skirt armour. Pretty handy design, that.

Revamping an old idea of mine...

More details, this time about the OCs and cameos. Note I took liberties with GLaDOS's Mekanoid version. :p

--------

R3X MODEL - SPACE FORTRESS RIANOBED

A giant space fortress the size of a small moon built by the Mekanoids' creators prior to their sudden extinction. This space fortress was the third and final model built, and was named after an old legend of the Creators, which stated that 'when the steel moon shines in the sky, Rianobed, the gate to paradise, would open'.

Ironically, immediately after completion of Rianobed, a deadly shower of cosmic rays struck and killed almost all life on the planet, leaving only rare plants, insects and Mekanoids left. The planet has slowly degenerated into a lifeless shell since then, and the Mekanoids have taken to 'terraforming' it into the artficial planet, Mekanos.

Rianobed itself still orbits the dying planet, being kept active and working by the central intelligence -Zero One-. As a space fortress, it is equipped with gravitonic fluctuators that enable it to reach quasi-relativistic speed for short periods of time. This, coupled with the Skygate's phase shift technology, proves invaluable in relocating Rianobed in the Sol system when it is handed over to the NDC.

The space fortress is fully equipped with lifesupport and living quarters for a very large number of inhabitants - easily more than the NDC boast in their own numbers. It was also apparently made with transportation of massive objects in mind, as it has hangars capable of storing every unit in the NDC's armada, battleships included. However, it was clearly made for an alien race, as its accommodations needed modifications to even only be usable by humans.

Several Mekanoids chose to accompany Rianobed in its travel to the Sol system besides the central admin -Zero One-, curious about humans. These include the comm specialist Serenade-?, the security expert Cerberus-? and the battle routine and strategizing expert Cortana-?, in addition to a semisentient hacking and security administrator - ADA - and an automated eight-legged security droid, codename X-ATM092, which is the Mekanoid equivalent of a guard dog and looks quite threatening, being much larger than other Mekanoids.

There is also a medical unit simply named The Doctor onboard, but since he's not very familiar with human physiology, his usefulness is very limited at first. He is, however, talented enough to figure a way to install a full lifesupport in Kamille Bidan's Jaguarandi for the ace pilot's use.

--------

SHODAN

SHODAN is the planetary administrator of Mekanos - for all intents and purposes, she is the planet itself, as she is aware of all its mechanized parts and denizens. Despite her name - which evoked great concern in some NDC pilots familiar with twentieth century Earth computer gaming - she is a very friendly and dependable creature, although streaks of ruthless rationality show up every now and then, especially when she asks why Kamille hasn't been 'recycled', as he's obviously 'a damaged unit'.

SHODAN is the one who authorizes use of Rianobed for the NDC, as the Mekanoids have no use for the giant satellite and it is quite a hassle to keep in shape when he planet itself is in its mechanizing process, which ties up almost all its resources. SHODAN agrees to hand Rianobed over to the NDC, but in return they will have to find their own resources for repairing it. Fortunately, the Sol system has such resources in abundance.

GLaDOS

Mekanos's long-distance comm administrator. GLaDOS processes all information and data coming from the various drones scattered by Mekanoids over the universe, operates remote activation of the Skygates and generally runs the place as much as SHODAN does.

Unlike SHODAN, GLaDOS is much closer to its twentieth century game counterpart, displaying a dispassionate amorality and slightly psychotic tendencies at times. In at least two occasions she issues a global hostile invasion alert just to see the humans jump out of their skins, and she shows an unsettling amount of interest in dissecting Karozzo's brain to see how it interacts with his Neo-Psycommu system. Needless to say, Iron Mask refuses to comply.

RB01 -ZERO ONE-

The central AI of Rianobed. Rarely seen, but his presence is felt as he keeps everything going smoothly from the shadows.

It should be noted that SHODAN saw fit not to tell the humans about Zero One's full designation: RB01, -Region Buster Zero One-, the final weapon meant to terminate threats of galactic proportions. Rianobed itself, after all, is a space fortress, and as such it has very large-scale destructive abilities. However, nothing short of a cosmic catastrophe would drive Zero One to act on his potential, so the risk he poses is negligible. In particular, short-lived organic lifeforms such as humans and Zuvorg have been classified at negligible threat level, making them more or less comparable to gnats in the grand scheme of things.

SNEV

A rookie pilot of negligible importance among the NDC. He does, however, have a claim to fame: other rookies and even veteran aces have taken to calling him the 'Shootdown King' because he has never finished a battle with his Mobile Suit intact, yet he has never been killed in battle either, always safely returning unharmed.

While he has decent skills, his importance lies more in the morale boost and inspiration he instills in other rookies - he survived allo his battles, so they should be able to do the same if they work hard at it, right? That leads to rookie pilots being very earnest in their fighting. While that does lead to casualties, the morale high Snev provides far outweighs the drawbacks of the youths becoming a little more reckless.

In short: he's pretty much there only for the morale. :snigger:

I know nothing of any of these characters or their original sources. But they fill a pretty big niche in the storyline, and they're much less obvious than Langran or the other options in SRW canon.

I like 'em. I was wondering if you might throw Musha Gundam and his red planet of doom in there, but this actually works even better.

lol, they are just cameos and other niceties. Except Rianobed, I made that one up.

Snev is a main character from Ashen Victor, a Battle Angel Alita spin off focused on Motorball. His nickname is the Crash King, because even though he has talent, that's how all his races end - in a spectacular crash. And yet he never dies from it.

SHODAN is the main villain in System Shock 1 and 2 for PC.

GLaDOS - same, but from Portal, also PC.

Cerberus Alpha is actually a homage to Lupa, the Wolves' leader in Digital Devil Saga, whose Atma was Asura Cerberus. There's also a boss by that name in an old Treasure game.

Serenade Beta is a reference to Mega Man BN's Underking Serenade, the Undernet's ruling Navi.

Cortana Delta is the expy of the AI installed in master Chief's Spartan suit.

The Doctor is a Star Trek shout out. :p

ADA is the AI of Jehuty, the Orbital Frame from ZoE Zone of the Enders.

X-ATM092 is the vicious Galbadian spiderbot guarding Dollet's communication tower in Final Fantasy 8.

Finally, Zero One is two references in one. He's an AI from a manga of the same name by Hiroya Oku, Gantz's maker, and he's also a reference to RB3, the Doomsday Machine from SaGa Frontier, whose name incidentally is indeed Region Buster 3 - Region being the terminology to indicate entire miniature dimensions, so you do the math...

That's all. Enjoy.

Why not add Cortana's big brother to the mix? Few would even remember the tale of Durandal and the ship called Marathon.

Sorry, I'm a nostalgic.

Y halo thar, status update tiems.

Okay, here's what's been going on. Since I have found a new job, I have precious little time to dedicate to fiction writing. However, I have been working on-and-off on a prologue to TWO different versions of this fic.

The big difference? The Gundam-based cast. While in this fic, the cast is UC-centric, the other version has only non-UC characters - Wing, SEED's various series, Gundam X, G Gundam and Gundam 00.

This, of course, has repercussions on the overarching plot. Since I have character-specific mini-scenarios, they of course change if I change the characters involved.

I have been doing this mainly because someone pointed out such a GRIMDARK kind of fic would be a good chance to de-pussify certain characters who need copious Brightslapping, and since I was basically raping the involved casts without lube, might as well do it to those who deserved it. :snigger:

So yeah, for those of you who care, this is the alternate 'good guys' Gundam cast that I whipped up. As with the original, assume anyone not on the list is either KIA, crippled to the point of being useless, or otherwise incapacitated. Also, as with the original, several villains end up allying with the heroes, out of pure necessity.

GUNDAM 00

-Setsuna F Seiei
-Graham Aker
-Lockon Stratos
-Tieira Erde

G GUNDAM

-Allenby Beardsley
-Chibodee Crocket
-Rain Mikamura
-George De Sand
-Schwarz Bruder

GUNDAM WING

-Trowa Barton
-Quatre Raberba Winner
-Lucrezia Noin
-Treize Khushrenada
-Lady Une
-Adin Barnett
-Valder Farkill
-Doctor J

GUNDAM X

-Garrod Ran
-Jamil Neate
-Lancerow Dowell
-Witz Sou
-Olba Frost

GUNDAM SEED

-Shinn Asuka
-Lunamaria Hawke
-Meyrin Hawke
-Stella Loussier
-Mwu La Flaga
-Meer Campbell
-Lowe Gear

Also, on the villains' side, in misc. order:

-Kyoji Kasshu/Devil Gundam
-Michelo Chariot
-Ali Al Saachez
-Rau Le Creuset
-the A-Laws

Shuu Shirakawa's Interlopers also got a revamp:

-Ribbons Almark
-Master Asia
-Schwarz Bruder
-Zechs Merquise
-Gai Murakumo

And as a separate force, the Musha Gundam has a large army of AI-controlled mobile suits and is indiscriminately attacking both sides, as well as Shuu's Interlopers. Its own interest in this conflict is a secret. :p

Huh. That's quite a re-direction. I mean, sure, we get awesomeness like Gundam X . . . but we lose awesomeness like Lalah raping Zuvorgfags in the Sazabi.

I'm conflicted. This is clearly awesome, and yet, something in me questions the change in status quo. :huh.:

I bet God Gundam is going to be Schwarz' MS. Allenby can get Shining, or keep her Sailor Gundam.

I knew I had forgotten someone. Fixed now.

As for Turn A... I was tempted just for Harry Ord, but the Turn A and Turn X are a little too broken. Unless I start throwing in major villains like Dark Brain...

<s>God damn Super Robots, forcing me to go wiki this shit.</s>

Oh, wait, wut? SEED's Sanger expy? Huh. OK then. Better than most of the other choices in that particular era.

<s>Mwu would have been cool, but he was obviously killed when he used Def. Support on the Archangel. Don't even fucking think otherwise, goddamnit.</s>

I may give more coherent feedback once I've gotten some sleep. But I promise nothing.

Before I forget, I did some tweaking to the UC cast and units - namely, replaced Beecha with Elle and mixed up the various units.

Here's the updated version. When listing units, ones between *asterisks* are their best, final units.

NEO DIVINE CRUSADERS
(if you people really dislike this faction name so much, suggest a better one. Londo Bell is NOT an option.)

-Haman Karn (Qubeley, *Nu Gundam*)
-Daitetsu Minase (*Hiryu Custom*)
-Lefina Enfield (*Hiryu Custom*)
-Mekiboss (*Graterkin*)
-Masaki Andou (*Cybuster*)
-Ryuune Zoldark (*Valsione*)
-Kamille Bidan (*Jaguarandi*)
-Anavel Gato (Gelgoog R, *Neue Ziel*)
-Ramba Ral (Gouf, *Big Zam*)
-Karozzo Ronah (*Rafflesia*)
-Ryusei Date (R-1, *SRX*)
-Latouni Subbota (R-2 Powered, *SRX*)
-Kusuha Mizuha (R-3 Powered, *SRX*)
-Seolla Schweizer (Fairlion, *R-Blade Custom*)
-Yazan Gable (Hambrabi, *Huckebein 008L*)
-Reccoa Londe (Palace Athena, *Vigna Ghina*)
-Emma Sheen (Gundam MkII, *Dijeh SE-R*)
-Tasuku Shinguuji (Giganscudo, *Giganscudo Duro*)
-Katina Tarask (Gespenst MkII Custom, *Grungust Type Zero*)
-Kouji Kabuto (Mazinger Z, *Great Mazinger*)
-Sayaka Kyuu (Aphrodite A, *Minerva X*)
-Boss (Boss Borot, *Mazinger Z*)
-Hiroshi Shiba (*Steel Jeeg*)
-Great General of Darkness
-Usso Ewin (*V2 Assault Buster Gundam*)
-Katejina Loos (*Gottrlatan*)
-Sarah Zabiarov (Bolinoak Sammahn, *The O*)
-Elpeo Puru/Puru-2 (Qubeley MkII, *Quin Mantha*)
-Lalah Sune (Elmeth, *Sazabi*)
-Bernard Wiseman (Hizack, *NT-1 Alex*)
-Roux Louka (Re-GZ, *FA Double Zeta Gundam*)
-Elle Vianno (Gundam MkII, *Hyaku-Shiki*)
-Snev (Zaku II, Barzam, Gaza-C, *Byalant*)
-Marion Radom
-Fa Yuiri

I'll post the villains and Shuu's faction later, but the changes there are very minor.

Fun idea (and I am still working on my incarnation of the Eva idea), rather looking forward to seeing it, though I'm not too familiar with a lot of the choices.

One question popped up:

-Emma Sheen (Gundam MkII, *Dijeh SE-R*)
-Elle Vianno (Gundam MkII, *Hyaku-Shiki*)
Are they both flying the Mk II at the same time? Or are you pulling two out?

There are two Mark II's. The first one is the original which Kamille stole and Emma piloted until the end of the Grypios war, the other is the second MkII built after the conflict which was used by Elle. Remember, Emma's own MkII was totaled during the Grypios-2 battle.

If you prefer, go the Gundam Musou route and make one the white AEUG Gundam MkII, and the other the black Titans MkII used by Jerid. :snigger:

Due to broken links, I added new pics for Jaguarandi and Zero One. Check the previous posts regarding new mecha and characters to see them.

EDIT: Also changed the pic for the Psyco Gundam MkIII, and updated the weaponry description for both the Jaguarandi and the Psyco MkIII.

EDIT MKII: Final piece of info on the Rianobed denizens.

X-ATM SERIES

These denizens of Mekanos aren't properly Mekanoids, but rather Pseudonoids - low-intelligence, barely self-aware creatures who more or less occupy the same niches as Earth-based fauna.

The X-ATM series, in particular, are Mekanos's version of guard dogs. Big, metallic, six-legged, trigger happy guard dogs. These 'spiderbots' are absolutely loyal to Zero One, executing its orders without question.

Every X-ATM unit, in addition to its powerful legs and extreme agility (they can run and jump faster than anything that big has any right to be), comes with twin 7.62mm machinegun turrets mounted on its back, heat sensors and nanomachine-based regenerative capabilities.

One specific X-ATM unit, X-ATM092, has somehow been 'adopted' by Elpeo Puru. It has been repainted so it has green lining, and Puru can often be seen riding it like a horse inbetween battles. The Pseudonoid does not seem to mind, and has in fact displayed a notable amount of protectiveness towards the young Newtype.

Shu, for example, has already killed a horrific dark God with Granzon. Putting Cthulu himself up against what's left of the Alpha Numbers, SRX, ATX, Londo Bell, Titans and Axis still wouldn't do the trick, I reckon. :p
