Yes, it's a vehicle to get people to sign up for CBS' streaming service. Yes, the project is being spearheaded by the Into Darkness co-writer. And yes, we know literally nothing about it except that it will exist sometime in the future.

But STAR TREK is coming back to television in 2017!

Here's an article about it (MSN).

Not as big a Trek fan as I once was, but I'll be glad to give this a look. Hope they manage to keep it interesting...

Also, Enterprise.

That should temper anyone's expectations.

The fact that CBS has all the other Trek series on their streaming service is neat, but considering that I don't really watch much CBS stuff (aside from NCIS, and usually in re-runs), the $6/month pricetag doesn't really make much sense.

The article stated that 'the franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.' Which means it's be picked up for syndication in the US sometime, but considering the fact that most channels will only show the previous season after the newest season has started, you're looking at a year's wait, or more.

If it is a entirely new continuity, I'm probably going to have to say no.

If it is based on STO, I'm definitely not interested...

If it is based on the last two reboot movies... I'm iffy.

Based on all I heard, legally it cannot be based on Enterprise/TOS/TNG/DS9/Voyager timelines.

I however, have liked several of the 'fan' productions over the years... the most recent active ones I've seen being Renegades and Axanar (which the prequel is out, but still making the movie)...

If it's like the two reboot movies, which seems sadly likely, I'm not interested, and fairly annoyed/disgusted.

If it's based on STO, I'll give it a chance, but won't expect much.

If it's in a new continuity, I'll give it a chance, and would prefer this to STO.

Basically, I don't have a lot of hope, here.

A few days late, but Bryan Fuller is going to be producing the new series: http://www.denofgeek.com/tv/star-trek/37600/star-trek-bryan-fuller-to-executive-produce-new-series

Been a Trek fan since way back before 1981, when I was only 9... Have all the existing series on DVD box sets, and some 500+ novels. And dozens of tech manuals. Think it way better than star wars... was around for the premiers of all but the original series. even held pizza nights for the Enterprise and Voyager premiers.

This new series... Not remotely interested.

Between STO, the JJ Abrams style engineering and looks, the feel of the new trailer, and the double whammy of how CBS/Pamamount have handled the series overall have sapped any strength to raise any interest.

A pity, as I actually liked some of the actors.

The trailer that I've seen didn't show the engineering or looks.  What are you basing it on?

If it's the new Bridge Crew game, I admit that makes me pessimistic, but there's still a small chance that that's just based on the movie, and not how the new series will look.

Really? I've read a lot of the books (mostly the ones published by Pocket Books), but not nearly that many. That is impressive.

It's a shoddy effects shot of a bad ship design. But it could still be a better show than Enterprise.

Seriously, it looks like a video game from 2009.

But Bryan Fuller has assured Duncan Jones that it's going to be more than just action.

A friend of mine pointed this out...the registry number 1031....has 31 in it...a link to section 31 when you add in the asteroid base. I'm not sure I buy it, but I mention it for completeness sake.

Oh yuck. it is a refresh of the Ralph McQuarrie design for the Enterprise. That was actually one of the designs made for the Original Motion Picture, or more accurately, the failed series called Phase II Paramount was going to attempt in the 70's... they dropped that design and instead went with the design that did appear in the movie.

If they were going to do that... I would have wished instead that they went with what is commonly referred to as the Constitution II design that was also dropped in favor of the one used. Probably could not since it was too close to the one used...

Looks like someone slapped an Enterprise saucer section onto a Klingon Warbird.

Seriously, what the fuck were they thinking?

The Klingon theme does play during the launch of the ship in the trailer...thus the design similarity might be intentional.

I always in the past thought it more a star destroyer tacked onto the enterprise rather than a Klingon ship... But then... I'm tainted by having seen the original 1970's ship... and the knowledge Ralph really did work on the Star Wars Star Destroyer.

Here is one link with some images of it.concept art.

http://io9.gizmodo.com/5721854/ralph-mcquarries-lost-concept-art-for-a-star-trek-movie-in-1976-1977/

The Matt Jefferies design (aka what some fans refer to as Constitution II or the failed Constitution refit) was much closer, but still distinct from the final one chosen... (note closely the older saucer design, the torpedo tubes, and the exact shape and look of the warp nacelle, which are not same as the design finally used)

http://www.modelermagic.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/phase_ii_1701-007.jpg

Andrew Probert was brought in, and took the Jefferies design, and made his own distictive and more extensive remake of it, it was his design that eventually became the movie model.

One has to remember with the designs of the 70's by Ralph and Matt... they were not originally to be for a movie at all... Paramount was gearing for a new low budget series (called Star Trek Phase II, the scripts were eventually released in book form for fans interested), not a movie at all... they changed their minds last minute (literally, they even had the contracts altready signed and had to pay out on it). The change to movie expanded the budget and created a need for far more detailed models.

Remember, The Ent-D wasn't well liked when she first appeared, but grew on people since then.

Also, apparently this was a preliminary design and trailer that they put together over the course of five days, and so may not be final, though the acual vessel will likely be similar.

Good point... the Enterprise D was originally not well liked, nor was Excelsior for that matter when first shown in STIII.

I felt that the saucer section on the Enterprise D was too large for the body.

I had less an issue with that, than I did with Voyager's warp nacelles being too small for the ship...

There is a fannon design that I like called the Andromeda class made by a group called ASDB that I think looks much better. A little wider than Voyager, but more room for shuttles, and a larger crew complement.

For smaller star ships, I also liked from the STO game the Exeter class and another fannon one by the ASDB group called the Crusader class. For a far more modern type of Miranda class like Reliant, there is a fannon design called the Hubble class.

Personally....I always took a shine to the Defiant

and ship designs inspired by her.
