All right, we seem to be nicely settled in. A few more structural adjustments to make, but I think we're about done. Know what that means? Iron Fic time!

For those of you new to the forum, or who never check the general section, I'm going to start with the basics: What the fuck is Iron Fic?

Iron Fic was my attempt, four years ago, to reverse what I saw as the decline of TFF and to get us writing again. I suggested that we hold a writing contest with nothing but bragging rights on the line, and the response was universally positive! The first Iron Fic contests had only a few responses, but participation was steady and a good time was had by all. Every year since then IF has returned in the summer and kickstarted the imaginations of writers and brought terrific stories to the internet!

The basic format of Iron Fic is simple: I post a prompt or SECRET INGREDIENT at a pre-established time, usually 11AM Pacific Standard Time/7PM GMT, which contestants have FOUR(4) HOURS to respond to. Once time's up, myself and volunteer judges read and grade the fics along a rubric measuring a story's individual merits, literary merit, use of the theme, grammar and punctuation, and other (usually how much we like the story). The person with the highest total points wins.

It's not complicated, and some fan-fucking-tastic stories have come out of IF over the years. I'd post my favorites, but that would be showing bias.

Ladies, gentlemen and zomg!TENTACLES of TFF, it is with great pleasure that I officially announce that the fifth season of IRON FIC will begin Saturday the 25th of May at 6PM GMT! Adjust your clocks and check your timezones!

To address the long standing issue of late submissions, the following change will be made to the official rules: Late submissions take a 2-point penalty to the "Other" category for every hour of tardiness, subtracted after the official score is given out. So the judge will fill out the rubric and then apply the penalty. This means that there is a ten hour window in which you can submit an entry after the contest, but with a penalty. Iron Fic is still a FANFICTION contest, I'll see about an original fiction segment after we get the section set up.

And yes, we might do prizes this year. I've got stuff on Steam that I could let people pick from. I'd also allow donations to this stockpile.

That is all I have to say! Except, wait for it...

HAAAAAI-YAH!

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you.

Also, I'm going to write the shit out of you.

Or this contest. Or this forum.

I don't even know what I'm saying anymore.

To help with the timezone mess I like to direct people here,
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html

For example setting 25/May/2013 to 6PM GMT in my part of the world,

comes to,
Saturday, 25 May 2013, 23:30:00
11:30PM at night?!? 4 hours ahead means it (semi) ends at ... 3:30AM !!! I'll be asleep for the whole thing. :dodgy: Anyway, with penalty extending another 6 hours comes to ... 9:30AM.

Hmm... I usually wake up around 6AM or so, do my morning things and if I'm lucky, manage to turn my PC on by around 8AM. Which gives me a glorious 4hours*2 = 8 point penalty or so. AND I have just 90 minutes to submit something.

Dammit.

Wata - in the interest of those halfway across the globe, can I request the contest be extended to 24-hours without any penalties what-so-ever? Please? :(

Iron Fic's timeslot has always been kind of slippery, and something that I considered last year (but sadly was unable to implement) was a nightshift Iron Fic: different but related prompt, twelve hour posting delay. Might put that into effect, but Shirotsume has an idea for a program that could let us get around the time delay in its entirety.

So I wouldn't worry about it.

EDIT: In news sure to please absolutely no one, I can confirm that oTFF smilies are enabled on the new board. I'll see about getting the smilie pane stretched out to accommodate them all.

I think it'd be interesting if we eventually implemented a series of different contests using various time limits (and possibly other changes) e.g. twelve hours, a day, a week and a month.

Speaking of smilies, there's a problem with the "unsure" one - it comes up with normal text, which is irritating when you're reading a fic that's got half-decent grammar and spelling and you suddenly come across a smiley.

It's quite jarring.

I propose that its shortcut/what you need to put in to get it to show up should have a : in front and behind of it like so:-

Or at least, directly in front of it. Which ever's easiest for the person to change.

You might even see what I mean with this post. If not, check out my Black Lagoon story thing and you'll see what I mean.

Now that's odd, I'm looking at the smiley control panel and it says that the unsure smiley should only be showing up when bracketed by colons. Let me try a quick edit...

Wait, found it. There are two "unsure" smileys in the archive that should be distinguished by an explanation point after one but not the other. I forgot to add that in, so the editing software changed the replacement code to avoid having two smileys with the same reference. Fixed now.

Awesome! :yay:

Quick question, is there a way to have the smiley list automatically expanded so we don't need to open a new window with the full list? ([get more])

Hmm, thats fine. If we can't figure it out then no use potentially breaking what we already have. :p

LOL I reload the page and suddenly nothing looks the same anymore.

Dat [Fandom Specific Fanfiction]

Edit: I actually have a request. Can we put [Fandom Specific Fanfiction] above [Fanfiction by Medium]?
Edit2: Hmmm, and what about the restricted section? I personally feel that makes more sense in [Fandom Specific Fanfiction].

To be honest, I really don't see the point in this change to begin with. I mean, before we had a list of all our fandoms. Now we have 'Fanfiction Group A' and 'Fanfiction Group B'. I don't see the point--were people getting confused over the ordered, alphabetized list or something? Given the choice, I'd prefer we just went back to the normal way--this seems like a pointless change no one wanted or asked for.

Or did I miss a vote?

We had a request for a new organizational method a while back, and people seemed interested in it. I had to add some new boards anyway, so I decided to try it out. And then I got up and started making dinner, so I forgot to make a post explaining I was doing it. *cough*

So... we're experimenting with new board layouts, if this doesn't work out we're going back. Sorry!

No vote that I know of.

Thats right, we didn't have a vote.

I don't really see the problem myself, though time will tell if this is a good change or a bad one. Either way, if needed, it can be easily undone.

I am used to the old way though, so give the choice I would probably want to undo this one.

Edit: hmmm...yeah, talk is all the way down there. Don't like that.

Most likely, we should probably revert. This seems too...odd.

Yeah, this is wholly temporary. It's going to be changed to the organizational scheme proposed by Shirotsume tomorrow, and then a poll is going to go up as to what people like best. I'm already leaning towards the classic view.

I generally vastly prefer the method we covered earlier, separating all the fan fiction by mediums into separate sections with specific fandoms corresponding to a particular medium (or in the case of cross medium fandoms the most applicable medium where possible) connected to the specific medium sections.

Obviously we reduce the number of mediums by combining some of the more similar medium sections like Cartoon/Comic into one category, Tv/Movies into another, so both general sections are in the same section distinction along with each applicable specialized fandom. I believe it was even possible to combine all the Game Sections under one large banner using this method, beefing up that sections size by just combining the applicable sections together.

As is just separating by specific and generals just feels plain off. Granted it's only two sections and definitely a lot neater, but it offers significantly less room for expansion and growth and just generally feels clunkier and disordered even if as it is now it's probably less so than with the other proposed method.[hr]Also while I'm at noticing weird issues, why is the search prompt suddenly in a different section and has a strange dash after it?

Something I just noticed while checking the Digimon section.

It's just called 'Digimon'.

Nanoha is the same.

Either the word Fanfiction should be amended to them, or removed from the others.

Or leave it like that to mark them as new.

Or only add the word Fanfiction after they've stayed alive long enough to get out of the Beta stage.

Hmmm...
