As for the Spriggan's doesn't anyone else here think that their "useless" abilities for treasure hunting and illusion magic just mean that the general population of Japan who plays the game just aren't nearly as creative as a bunch of Nerds should be?
I like to think that the hero's special ability is ALWAYS initially portrayed as "dumb" in any story. ... until he shows everyone how to use it.

From that point, it becomes "the" thing for everyone.

AFAIK (or remember) each race in ALO has traits and specs tailored around certain aspects of the game. Instead of having defined job classes (like most Mummorpergers out there), they were defined as races that have benefits toward certain specs.

I care to think that the Spriggan have abilities that are less melee/damage centric, and more of aligned to act like the spy/infiltrator/rogue/thief race compared to the other races, best known as Treasure Hunters.

Salamanders tend to be more fit for frontline melee and heavy armor (Warrior/Samurai/Knight race?).

Sylph (like Lyfa) tend to be favor light armor and speedy attacks (Fencer, Thief, Lancer race?), they use wind magic.

Cait Sith are known to be the Beastmasters of ALO (tame and parter with monsters), they also seem to have better sight and hearing... possible Ranger/Hunter race?.

Undine seem to be the more magic adept and usually made main healers, use water magic.

Not much info is known about Gnomes (big earthy tank types?), Imps (dark ninja types?), Leprechauns (Blacksmiths?) or Pucas (Bards?)

In the later books, most if not all of Kirito's harem...er... crew imports their characters into ALO.

Asuna selects Undine as her race and because she wanted to try being a main healer... but with her melee and battle experience from SAO, she can't help but mixing it up in the front line and smash aminals instead of hanging in the backline with the rest of the support/long range.

I think Liz teases her about being something of a battle cleric or something of the sort. Although I can't remember what race she picked... I'm going with Salamander if she wanted to keep her red color scheme.

Silica picked Cait Sith so she could keep being a beastmaster and she got Pina back.

Klein also joined and picked Salamander.
SAO 19 - Kirito is showing us once again why we love his brand of badassery and shenanigans.
wonder what he'll do when he realizes he nibbled his sister/cousin's fingers... and how much trouble he'll be in once Asuna finds out

@Eromancer: if you have the time to invest, I recommend Tera. It's absoFSCKing beautiful and the play mechanics are much more satisfying than Aion's (let alone WoW). I had a hell of a great time the month or so I played it, moreso when I mapped my PS3 controller and enjoyed the action RPG feel it gave me while I was murderizing aminals and shaking my smexy Castanic derriere :D

Huh, their spells are in English? I so couldn't tell... thought it was random Magic Gibberish Words at random.

I'm pretty sure it is Random Magical Gibberish and Kirito was just comparing it to learning English in the same sort of way an English-speaker might compare learning Random Magical Gibberish to studying Latin or something. I think English is pretty much the only Western language the average Japanese person would have any personal experience with, and the Random Magical Gibberish was Western-ish, so I guess they sounded similar to him?

Sounded more like German to me... but like HC said, probably magical gibberish and difficulty in learning/using that "magic skill set".

I think the meaning in that scene was more toward:
Kirito> it's such a pain in the ass to actually chant stuff to cast magic... it's almost as bad as learning another language like English

Epic bluff is epic. Especially if it's technically true, in a weird retroactive way.

My favorite part of all the story arcs still is when Kirito changed into The Gleameyes and just wrecked everyone's shit. Now for some projection on what the episodes will show...
Currently it's episode 19, so 20 will be defending the leaders, 21 journey through Nifleheim, 22 will be first attempt up the World Tree, with some Asuna screen time and revealing faces behind the avatars; 24 will be EPIC ASSAULT ON WORLD TREE; 25 will be the FINAL SHOWDOWN and smirking scumbag getting his just dues... and that will be all.
Color changed to avoid spoiling for those scrubs who don't read the light novel :p

>hear about this series months ago

>ignore it because it sounds too much like .hack, which thing I hate

>get bored yesterday

>Girls und Panzers hasn't updated yet

>watch Sword Art Online anime for the hell of it

>awesome plot, characterization, and pacing

>MC has the balls to actually admit his feelings to his love interest and proposes

Holy shit what have I been missing

that is what you were missing
Matrix was utter shit, SAO isn't.

Still, it's refreshing to see an anime protagonist who is actually aware of monogamy and the concept of a healthy romantic relationship for once.

Go read LN on Bakatsuki. It's all of anime's awesome, only about hundred times better.

What is it with the Japanese and being shitty at writing novels? I think I'll just stick to the anime.

It's more that the content of novels loose something in translation... either you get something very literal with little flavor or too much flavor was put it but loses the spirit/isn't faithful enough/becomes too watered down compared to the source material.

This would not be a problem if everyone spoke and wrote in German.

Didn't we have this discussion like a month ago? I dunno which thread though.

Anyway, the consensus was, that BakaTsuki translates so super-literally that the words come off as very stiff and artificial. The voice of the author is completely lost in translation.

It's not that there's, like, 180 million people who as a collective culture suck at literature, but more like, the half-a-dozen people that translate pirated novels for free aren't professional quality translators.

Mmn if it's "% of world population that speaks / recognizes the language", across all history, I think you'd have a pretty tough time beating English in the modern era.

English is the torrid slut of the linguistic world, a black widow whose preference for fornicating with other languages in search of new thrills and words to steal is well known. We will all be better off once it is purged from history forever.

Edit: Sugou. Su. Gou. Sugou.

I need to find the time to watch the anime. There is so much interest around Sugou that it feels like the LN missed something.

@TmDagger: it only counts as retroactive because...

Undine!Asuna still hasn't been created/logged in to ALO (yet) and gotten married (again) to Spriggan!Kirito... the fact that Yui (their virtual daughter) DOES kinda look like the love child of a Spriggan and an Undine is pretty lolz too :snigger:

Also considering all the good PR Kirito is going to get once everyone finds out about his "must saev teh waifu" campaign, a truce between Spriggan and Undine is not that far fetched

No, the LN isn't missing anything.
It's just that the anime is just doing a good characterizing him like the villain we all love to hate with a passion. Once of the benefits of adaptation from novel to tv, actors have the ability to give their characters' lines good intonation (when applicable) and from there cause certain feelz in the fandom.

In the case of Nobuyuki Sugou/Fae King Oberon...
hate... hate, HATE, HAET!!!

The VA makes him sound like the pervy opportunistic schmuck we expect him to be.
Further making one WANT to see Kirigaya Kazuto/Kirito go to town and lay the smack down on the summummabish

Actually its all that... experience... that makes her such a great lay...

She knows how to bend to the whims of anyone who wants to... make use of her... and ever so often she goes out and finds a fresh new face... then shivs em and jangles their pockets for spare words.

English may be the whore of languages, but she is the best one in the business... Japanese comes close, but she's not quite as cutthroat as her western counterpart, just more shameless.

also English is the natural evolution of Latin, deal with it.
