The Fairy Dance arc is purposely written that way, apparently. It makes sense - in SAO, every fight was truly a matter of life or death, the slightest wrong move could reduce you to 0 HP and kill you off for good. ALO is supposed to look tame in comparison - notice Suguha/Leafa's reaction to Recon blowing himself up - "The death penalty for that is really high!", then she forgets about it seconds later.
For contrast, <a href='http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=AIFtX-C3m0I#t=80s' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Asuna's reaction to a pair of players getting oneshot by Skull Reaper</a>. Absolute horror.
SAO wasn't a game, not with everyone permanently trapped inside and threatened with possible death at any given moment. ALO is just people playing an MMO, safe in the knowledge that it's just a game. The drama here is that the real-world stakes are high, and among the playerbase at large only Kirito and Yui truly know about this.
As for Kirito hacking ALO, that's technically what he and Yui have been doing all along - his stats are rape-tier, Yui's got info on the surrounding area and even on other players nearby, and to top it off they cracked a door that wasn't intended to be openable. He's not just blatantly going Sneakers on the game, but he's still got a major advantage over everyone else.
I understand future arcs where Kirito and crew basically join the MMO police return to the whole "actual life-threatening risks are present" thing, so we'll just have to hope the SAO anime is renewed for another season.
