This thread is dedicated to the submission, speculation and discussion of whatever theories and ideas about the Narutoverse you have. This can range from ironing out the details of someone's backstory and understanding the different nature transformations to disproving fanon misconceptions and explaining the mechanics of specific jutsu. Even if someone's posted one theory and you have a different one on the same topic, feel free to talk about your own.

So if you've figured something out from what you've seen in the manga or in discussions and want to share, then this is the place to post it.

Chakra Enhancement v1 (Version 2)

A ninja is able to enhance their body by generating chakra and concentrating it in the necessary areas. By focusing it in the legs they can run faster and jump higher and focusing it in the arms allows them to hit harder and lift a greater amount of weight. The Body Flicker Technique is a ninjutsu based on this concept which supercharges the entire body with chakra so the user can move at extreme speeds, appearing to vanish from sight. The more a shinobi trains their body then the more chakra can be focused within their limbs, meaning that a taijutsu specialist would achieve greater benefits from chakra enhancement than a genjutsu specialist.

Certain individuals have developed unique forms of chakra enhancement that can achieve even greater results than usual. Haruno Sakura developed a jutsu which builds up as much chakra as possible in her fist and releases it at the moment of impact for incredible destructive power. But the most famous example is Tsunade of the Sannin whose super strength is a result of her chakra control and fine-tuning. The only description of how this works is that by instantly collecting chakra into her fist and fingers, she obtains a power of destruction bodily strength alone cannot achieve.

Chakra enhancement isn't limited to the limbs either; it can also be used to enhance the user's senses. By concentrating chakra to the right areas, a ninja's sense of touch, smell, hearing, sight and taste can be enhanced beyond what humans are normally capable. Certain individuals and ninja clans are predisposed towards certain types of enhancement such as the Inuzuka who possess an incredibly sense of smell.

Chakra Sensing (Official Version)

Everyone has a certain sense that allows them to detect chakra. This sense is most apparent when touching another person or an object that contains chakra however it's possible to sense chakra from a distance. Even with training, for most shinobi that wouldn't extend beyond ten meters unless there's a powerful and/or huge spike of huge chakra.

A smaller percentage of the population are known as Sensors. Their ability to sense chakra extends far beyond what most people are capable of, allowing them to detect targets from a great distance as well as differentiate individuals from their chakra signature alone. They possess an awareness of when other sensors are using their ability. The range and detail of this technique various between sensors as some are so skilled that they can tell when a person is lying or preparing a jutsu whilst others can only tell the general direction of a chakra mass

It's also possible for a ninja to suppress their own chakra to prevent them from being sensed. For most ninja, this doesn't completely hide a person's chakra but it does make them far harder to sense which is useful for stealth and evasion. A sensor on the other hand is essentially able to make themselves completely invisible to chakra sense at the cost of not being able to use their own chakra sensing. It's very difficult to use a jutsu and suppress chakra at the same time due to the needed concentration, usually forcing the ninja to stop the suppression when they need to attack or defend.

Some shinobi have developed specific jutsu which allows them to detect the presence of enemies either because they aren't sensors or to expand the range of their sensory ability. This is known as contact-type sensing. The most notable examples are Nagato creates rain infused with his chakra and Gaara who spreads a special type of sand over an area.

Senjutsu v1 (Version 2)

This is a form of chakra manipulation which was discovered by the summon animals. As animals they are closer to nature than humans and their instincts led to them learning to harness its power. Not all the summon animals possess knowledge of senjutsu and not all of those that do are willing to pass on their teaching. The ones that do are willing to teach those who sign their clan's summoning contract in blood.

To use senjutsu, it's necessary to possess extreme levels of chakra as it would mean that the user has a body which can use the full potential of this training, one that's capable of handling a foreign energy being introduced into it. The process involves sensing and absorbing natural energy into the body and blending it with their chakra to create the more powerful sage chakra. The user is required to balance their physical and spiritual energy with the natural energy they gather from nature. If the user puts too little natural energy into using senjutsu, the technique will not work and if they gather too much then they transform into an animal and turn to stone. Once a balance has been reached, the user will enter an empowered state known as Sage Mode. Reaching this point means that the user is no longer in danger of turning into a stone animal.

There are two types of Sage Mode; perfect and imperfect. Perfect Sage Mode is achieved when the user is able to perfectly balance natural energy with their chakra. The only part of their appearance which changes is their eyes; usually changing colour, shape and/or gaining markings. The advantages provided by this form are that the user's physical strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and durability dramatically increase and their ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu become more powerful. They can harness the natural energy surrounding them, turning it into an extension of their body, which increases the reach of their attacks. Lastly, they gain a sensory ability to detect and identify other people's chakra even from very long distances away, measure the strength of size of someone's chakra and enable them to predict the movements of their enemies.

Imperfect Sage Mode is when the user hasn't achieved a perfect balance of energy, causing their body to take on animalistic properties. The disadvantages of this are that the increase in physical abilities and the strength of their jutsu isn't as great as they would be in the perfected form, and they are unable to harness natural energy as an extension of their body to increase the reach of their attacks. Instead they are capable of transforming parts of their body to become more animalistic which can be useful in combat.

Despite common belief, it isn't necessary for humans to sign a contract with a summon animal for them to use senjutsu. However it's far more difficult for a human to become in tune with nature without a blood bond with summon animals, assuming they even possess the necessary knowledge. And the lack of tools that would prevent them from turning to stone would make it a dangerous and time-consuming endeavour.

When an un-contracted human learns senjutsu, instead of transforming into an animal they remain humanoid but undergo unnatural alterations with the exact features being unique to each individual. The only common features are yellow eyes with a black sclera, skin changing colour, and longer hair, though someone who can use a perfect Sage Mode would only have their eyes change colour. This type of senjutsu is incredibly rare and those that use it are known as Demon Sages.

Land of Water v1 (Version 2)

Land of Water is an island country floating on the ocean with a very unique culture. It's completely surrounded by water, with most of the land occupied by steep mountains. The smaller islands around the main island each have their own traditions, and many citizens stubbornly insist on preserving these.

When the hidden villages came into being, Kirigakure was the village that was created on the main island of the Land of Water. However it wasn't able to completely unite the shinobi clans of the nation, meaning that various clans could be found on the smaller islands with their own allegiances. The lords of these islands would often war with each other and the main island, resulting in the nation being plagued by endless civil war. They would hire the ninja clans to fight for them which resulted in kekkei genkai clan becoming especially feared as they could use deadly ability without needing to learn them.

To help unify the nation at the end of the last war the bloodline clans were used as scapegoats for the general populace to aim their hate and resentment at. They were persecuted as the bringers of misfortune and many were forced into hiding their bloodline, including the once-powerful Yuki Clan who had been decimated in the war. The Kaguya Clan survived only to destroy themselves by attacking Kirigakure without allies thanks to their warmongering ways.

Kirigakure is one of the few places that kekkei genkai users can live openly but they still suffer from the prejudice created by the civil wars. Whilst civilians of the nation openly despise bloodline holders, shinobi feel a mixture of contempt and fear for them. They are treated like dangerous weapons who serve the village, similar to the jinchuuriki, but most of them find that life preferable to living in fear of death.

But this lifestyle was still wearying. Combined with Kirigakure becoming less powerful and respected among the other nations and the increasingly erratic behaviour of the Fourth Mizukage Yagura during the later parts of his life, discontent grew more and more within the village. Eventually, this culminated in a revolution headed by Terumi Mei who sought to reform Kirigakure. Her desire to better its internal policies, improve the lives of bloodline holders and re-establish diplomatic relations with other countries caused a massive movement that resulted in her dethroned Yagura and become the Fifth Mizukage.

Whilst many found themselves satisfied with this change, Mei's support was not absolute. A year before canon, a rogue faction of shinobi led by Momochi Zabuza instigated a coup d'etat but it ended in failure. He deserted Kirigakure entirely and eventually found himself in Gatou's employment to escape the Hunter-nin Corps and find funding for a second rebellion. But due to the actions of a certain team from Konoha, this never came to be.

Thank you for not repeating that annoying fanon of a "bloodline purge" occurring in Water Country, especially one being led and/or instigated by Kirigakure under the orders of Yagura/Madara-controlling-Yagura.

I don't know how that particular bit of fanon become so ingrained in Naruto fanfiction. There is no evidence of it, it would be stupid for a ninja village to hunt down bloodline users instead of recruiting them, and what possible motive could Yagura or Madara have for doing it?

Guess I might as well repost this while I'm here:

Fuinjutsu

fuinjutsu is the written equivalent of a jutsu. The inscribed runes determine how the chakra is molded in the same manner as handseals do in a jutsu, and any kanji incorporated into the fuinjutsu control the shape and/or elemental transformation of the chakra (such as the kanji for "explode" that's written on the center of every explosive tag).

Because the fuinjutsu does all the heavy lifting in performing the jutsu inscribed upon it, all the ninja using it has to do to activate it is provide the seal with the correct amount of chakra with the correct ratio of physical to spiritual energy, and possibly the correct ratio of yin to yang if the fuinjutsu calls for that. That information for the most common seals such as storage seals and exploding tags would be taught to every ninja in the academy, so most ninja would be able to utilize them without needing any special understanding of how fuinjutsu functions. Copying a seal requires only excellent calligraphy skills and no knowledge of fuinjutsu - so long as the new seal is a perfect replica then it will function the same as the reference seal.

Actually creating new seals would be just as difficult as creating a new jutsu, actually even more difficult because in addition to requiring a great understanding of chakra meta-physics, you'd need to study the "language" of fuinjutsu to know precisely how to translate the instructions of handseals and elemental/shape chakra transformation into runes and kanji on a piece of paper. So if you wanted to create a new medical seal, you'd need a great understanding of both medical jutsu and fuinjutsu, and to create a new kind of exploding tag you'd need to study fuinjutsu and have mastered fire elemental transformation and have a good many explosive jutsu in your repertoire.

p.s. The second paragraph under "chakra enhancement" has possibly the best typo I've read on this forum yet - "Tsunade of the Tsunade" Why yes, she certainly is! :snigger:

Nope, that's my own speculation. All we know so far is that there are at least 3 places where you can learn senjutsu and they're apparently only known by certain summon animals. So I went with the idea that summon animals are the ones who discovered senjutsu and generally keep it between themselves.

Fuuinjutsu (Lord Raine)

Did a bit of searching and found Lord Raine's interpretation of Fuuinjutsu from his Chakra Mechanics Thread.

Fuuinjutsu - Lord Raine Edition

Fuuinjutsu is the art of transcribing into writing an effect. The basics of fuuinjutsu involve mastering the twelve core handseals and learning to scribe them in runic form. Even though fuuinjutsu involves areas well beyond what can be accomplished with pure handseals, along with runes that cannot be translated back into handseals, fuuinjutsu is considered to be an extension of ninjutsu for this reason.

Fuuinjutsu itself is divided up into three primary categories, each of which are both fundamental to fuuinjutsu as a whole and vital to anyone who seeks to use fuuinjutsu effectively. These categories are Locking, Unlocking, and Altering.

Locking focuses on sealing or containing objects, energies, or the properties of objects and energies. Examples of this include sealing a weapon into a scroll, using fuuinjutsu to capture an effect (such as Jiraiya using fuuinjutsu to contain Amaterasu), using fuuinjutsu to weaken a structure or material by degrading it's hardness and durability, and using fuuinjutsu to shut down someone's chakra coils.

Unlocking focuses on releasing or enhancing objects, energies, or the properties of objects and energies. Examples of this include using fuuinjutsu to reinforce a material by making it tougher and more durable, enhancing already present traits in something, and perhaps most commonly, using a counterseal to release something that has been locked.

Altering focuses on changing the properties of something, be it an object or an energy. Examples of this include using fuuinjutsu to filter out or enhance a specific chakra frequency or affinity, using fuuinjutsu to force matter to change it's state, and enacting any sort of change upon an already existing subject.

To demonstrate the differences between these three classifications, let us use the example of an open flame. A fuuinjutsu seal of the locking variety would seal the flame away into a rune, allowing it to be released at a later date. A fuuinjutsu seal of the unlocking variety would enhance the flame, making it burn hotter, brighter, or longer. And a fuuinjutsu seal of the altering variety would transmute the flame into something else. Being an energy, this would typically be into another sort of energy, such as turning the flame into electricity, though more skilled and masterful fuuinjutsu users could perform a energy to matter transmutation, and turn the flame into something such as water, hydrogen, or even stone.

Though they are important, none of these three categories are truly separate from each other, nor are they actually different. They are merely categories and names created to make discussing, teaching, and using fuuinjutsu easier. Some fuuinjutsu users follow these classifications religiously, while others consider the entire system to be an unnecessary clutter to the art.

Many practitioners of fuuinjutsu choose to focus on one or two of the three aspects of fuuinjutsu, even individuals who seek to attain a degree of mastery over the art. This allows them to focus their studies and practice, but in turn limits some of their versatility.

The way I see it - Fuuinjutsu involves transcription of phenomena and concept the way you perceive them into runes. This would explain why people from different ages and regions develop different styles of sealing - because they see the World in slightly different way. You can think of it as, well, taking a 2D picture of 3D object. Depending on perspective the image would change, though object remains the same. Of course, as different perspectives describe certain aspects of target better or worse, different styles of Fuuinjutsu would be better or worse at solving certain problems.

Styles like the seals used to contain the Hachibi and Kyuubi respectively?

I figured that was a result of each nation developing their own method for sealing a bijuu into a human. Their skill, viewpoints, knowledge and talent resulted in each one creating a unique sealing formula that accomplish that goal. Some function differently, some are less or more effective, some come with unique features but they all essentially do the same thing. So you can create different fuuinjutsu for the same purpose which makes it more personal and very diverse.

Same reason why Tobito has a laboratory chocked full of Sharingan eyes.

As for whys, I can think of a few reasons why they would want to eliminate bloodline users. Fear, mostly. Fear of their power, fear of war their powers herald. If the Kaguya clan were any indication, bloodline users wouldn't fall in line with the new order, and posing a threat to a fledgling organization, it would become necessary to suppress rebellion and establish order. Easiest way would be to kill all of those opposing you, including their children.

Also, <a href='http://www.mangahere.com/manga/naruto/v04/c029/11.html' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Haku's mother was killed by her husband the moment it was discovered she was a bloodline user, and then tried to kill Haku, too</a>. It's easy to see why people might think of a national purge going on. Bloodline users were hated and feared, blamed for all the misfortunes of their nation and the endless civil wars perpetrated by their powers. Why would they suddenly go into hiding, if there weren't people out for their heads?

I have no issue with the idea that bloodline users were purged, my issue is with the idea that Kirigakure and specifically the Fourth Mizukage initiated and/or took part in the purges. We've only ever seen civilians attacking bloodline users in Water Country, while Haku was likely living in Kirigakure for around a decade considering that Zabuza found him as a toddler but only seemed to have recently defected from the village, so bloodline users are probably tolerated there at least.

Though your idea of the village fearing the bloodline users as threats brings up an interesting possibility to me - what if Kirigakure secretly eliminated bloodline clans that tried to stay independent or passed on info and propaganda about them to other groups that might attack them, while openly welcoming bloodline clans and offering them a safe haven? That way they could "encourage" as many bloodline clans as possible to join up with the village and increase it's strength, while simultaneously preventing those clans from joining up with rival mercenary groups or potentially threatening them in the future.

That could also mean that the Kaguya clan weren't just crazy, barbaric warmongers. They caught on to what Kirigakure was doing, but no one believe them (yeah right, why would the village that's taken in and protected dozens of bloodline clans be assassinating bloodine clans? You just want us to join forces with you instead!). Too prideful to accept that coercive offer after learning the truth, they attacked the village without support, thinking it their only chance to avoid extinction or subjugation.

My thoughts ended up in a different direction: I thought that maybe the civil wars Water Country were subjected to were originally because of conflict between Kiri and the bloodline clans. The hidden villages were meant to unite the shinobi clans within a country but the bloodline clans remained independent were obviously powerful. This would have meant that instead of all the clientele going to Kiri, it would be divided between different factions and creating competition between them.

Kiri would have wanted all the bloodline clan to join them. Maybe some did but other didn't. That refusal to become a part of the village could have resulted in conflict as each group would want everyone to hire only them. This could have actually started the civil wars that plagued nations; Kiri trying to force the bloodline clans to join them whilst the clan wanted independence (and perhaps wanted Kiri gone entirely).

Civilians would have been caught up the conflict and the power of kekkei genkai would have been shown to everyone in worst way possible, naturally generating fear from all sides. Eventually, the blame for the civil wars are pinned on the bloodline clans partly because it's true in a sense and partly because they're an ideal scapegoat. Then it'd reach a point where they can try and remain independent, go into hiding or join Kirigakure (which had probably all been occuring over the years anyway but by Haku's time it seemed the wars were over, bar the Kaguya).

Not exactly. What I meant is a difference on far more fundamental level.
Let's say - one Seal Master is a famous Scientist in modern world, while other is a well known philosopher in Age of Gods. Both create a rune to describe concept of 'fire'. The resulting runes will, of course, be different, as will be their capabilities. I can't see philosophers rune being much of use in magitech fusion reactor, just like I can't see scientists rune being any good at Fire Elemental summoning.

  • Orochimaru and the Cursed Seal: Moved
Haku

Haku is a descendent of the Yuki Clan, a bloodline clan who possessed the Hyouton Kekkei Genkai.

When the Yuki was nearly destroyed, Haku's mother hid her bloodline and lived as a civilian. She got married and had a child. But when Haku discovered his kekkei genkai as a child he was caught by his father who realised what kind of woman he had married. The father's upbringing and personal experiences made him incredibly prejudiced against anyone with his bloodline, causing him to turn against his own family. He killed his wife but when he tried to kill his son, Haku instinctively used the ice element to kill him instead. Haku ran away from his village, realising that he was unwanted by everyone.

Zabuza found Haku at a very young age, between when he was five and seven years old, wearing a broken leash and living on the street. Zabuza saw his kekkei genkai and wanted it for the sake of his ambitions and with that acknowledged, Haku gave Zabuza his absolute loyalty and chose to live as his tool.

Haku was never officially a ninja of Kirigakure but he was recognised as Zabuza's apprentice. Zabuza taught Haku everything he knew about basic ninja skills, medicine and assassin techniques, training him as a hunter-nin from the knowledge he gained as a member of ANBU. He also learned enough about the Yuki Clan to create their most infamous jutsu, the Makyou Hyousho. Whilst this made him extremely lethal, Haku suffered from a lack of versatility as his taijutsu, genjutsu, strength and stamina remained subpar thanks to his specialisation. The pair of them worked as a team and formed a deadly combination.

After several years together, Yagura was killed and replaced by Terumi Mei. She wished to re-establish diplomatic relations and reform internal policies which Zabuza was completely against, believing in the Bloody Mist that had created him. He and a group of shinobi launched a coup d'etat to take over Kirigakure but it ended in failure, forcing them to flee the village. They were hounded relentlessly by hunter-nin, forcing members of the group to split up to escape death.

Zabuza, Haku, the Demon Brother and their genin team eventually reached Wave Country where they joined up with Gatou, seeking money to fuel a second rebellion and gain vengeance.

"Haku, Zabuza, the Demon Brothers and their genin team"

Who is this genin team?

I don't really like the idea that Orochimaru would remain an acting member of ROOT after abandoning Konoha - it's unbelievably risky for Danzou should their connection be discovered, and what reason does Orochimaru have to remain subordinate to Danzou after he'd already abandoned the village? - but I recognize that it's really the only way to reconcile Orochimaru's unawareness of Yamato for at least a decade with his accepting a mission from Danzou to assassinate a 14-ish year old Kabuto.

Hm, I didn't mean to put that bit in the post. That was actually a reference to those <a href='http://i2.mangapanda.com/naruto/10/naruto-1565019.jpg' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>three unnamed shinobi</a> who never showed up again.

I figure that the relationship between Orochimaru and Danzo was more useful allies rather than him being subordinate. A "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" situation though it'd probably make more sense if they had broken almost all contact.

I assumed shinobi since their uniform has a similar pattern to Zabuza's clothes, they are by Zabuza's side rather than Gatou's and the way he's pointing and saying "all of you" makes me think it's directed everyone else in the room. The kneeling could be deference to Zabuza; a show of respect to him whilst he's talking with a client.

How would you explain their disappearance than? Did they chicken out and run when they heard their opponent was the famous Kakashi (Zabuza isn't paying us enough to fight him!) Or perhaps they were told to stay out of the fight and harass the people building the bridge, and they decided to "live to fight another day" when Zabuza and Haku bit the dust? Heh, or maybe they're plotting revenge for Zabuza's death and they'll show up out of the blue one day to comically, ineffectively attack Naruto or Sasuke.

or, you know, once it was clear Zabuza wanted to deal with it by himself(+Haku) they just kept on the sidelines waiting for the results.
Most likely, Zabuza wanted to deal with Kakashi by himself because it would grant him fame and a lot of money. "I killed Sharingan Kakashi by myself" is a lot more effective when negotiating a hiring fee than "I killed Sharingan Kakashi by myself and another half a dozen shinobi"

Elemental Kekkei Genkai v1 (Version 2)

This type of bloodline limit allows the user to generate two different chakra natures simultaneously and release them together to form a combined element. The typical method of doing this is to gather the chakra of one element gathers in one hand and the chakra of the second element gathers in another which is then brought together in a specific hand-seal to produce the combined element. They can however mould both chakras within the body for a jutsu or direct them through a single limb depending on their intention. The unique nature of their chakra system also means that only need one to hand to perform hand-seals for the standard elemental jutsu.

People with this type of bloodline limit have the instinctive ability to transform their chakra into different natures and combine them. This means that the only necessary part of the nature transformation training they require is increasing the amount of elemental chakra they can produce in an instant. The main focus is for them is shape transformation as the different shapes they give to their combined element govern the versatility of their style.

It's possible to create a variety of substances and effects that are related to the combined element by controlling the ratio of each element used. Due to their environment and history, different clans who possess the same kekkei genkai often use their combined element in a completely different way. Finally, the combined element will possess properties that belong to the elements that compose them.

Mokuton, Wood Release - This is the combination of water and earth chakra to create trees, wood and plant life.

Hyouton, Ice Release - This is the combination of water and wind chakra to create ice, snow, cold winds and freezing water.

Youton, Lava Release - This is the combination of fire and earth chakra to create lava, viscous molten rock, vulcanised rubber and quicklime.

Ranton, Storm Release - This is the combination of water and lightning chakra to create fluid energy beams.

Futton, Boil Release - This is the combination of fire and water chakra to create corrosive vapour capable of melting almost any substance.

Bakuton, Explosive Release - This is the combination of fire and wind chakra to create explosions.

Shakuton, Scorch Release - This is the combination of fire and lightning chakra to create gas-like chakra that evaporates water with heat.

Jiton, Magnet Release - This is the combination of earth and lightning wind chakra to create magnetic forces to grant control over different substances.

Kanton, Thunder Release - This is the combination of wind and lightning chakra to create sound.

Shokuton, Erosion Release - This is the combination of wind and earth lightning chakra to create matter-disintegrating chakra.

The final two elemental fusions are entirely my own creation, based on how I think the elements might interact and my assumptions about what the elements of the other fusions are. For Thunder Release, only Shima and Fusaku have shown the ability to directly manipulate sound without the use of tools and specifically with their own voices. Erosion Release is deliberarely similar to Dust Release as it is composed of two of its three elements.

I once read a theory that the reason elemental bloodline users can combine elements is because they have two chakra circulatory systems, or their chakra circulatory system is modular, allowing different parts of their body to close themselves off from each other and produce different types of chakra simultaneously. So they can combine different chakra elements while a normal person is physiologically limited to producing only one element at a time.

I think that would explain why using one element in each hand is preferred (those tenketsu are the easiest to emit chakra from) but it's technically possible to produce advanced elemental chakra entirely within their body, it's just harder.

This would also mean that it's theoretically possible for two ordinary ninja to produce advanced elements if they could learn how to sync their chakra together perfectly and combine them. (We've seen that's it's possible for two people to perform handseals together on a joint jutsu even if one of the participants is unwilling thanks to Anko, the Hokage Guard squad, and even Naruto using clones to help him perform rasengan) The difficulty would be astronomical, though using shadow clones should make it slightly easier since your chakras would be the same.

I don't think there's anything special about Shima and Fusaku manipulating sound. Anyone with strong vocal cords and a high skill in genjutsu is theoretically capable of doing what they did. I think it would be strange for sound to be an element when so many people are already capable of manipulating sound with their chakra, even if they need tools to do so.

That's interesting. I'd thought of it being at least partly mental/spiritual given the nature of chakra control. Their minds work in such a way that they can perform two different chakra transformations at once as well as having a body capable of allowing it to occur within their chakra system.

With Thunder Release, I was thinking along the lines that there a significant difference between just manipulating sound and creating it with your chakra. It's not the first example of a certain effect that can be produced normally being used as an advanced element like Explosion Release and Boil Release. There are explosive tags used in various ways, explosive substances and especially Itachi's Clone Great Explosion, showing that there's an actual ninjutsu capable of generating explosions. Then there's Boil Release which is fairly similar to Katsuyu's acid spit and the Rokubi's alkaline substances, showing the basic traits of corrosion. Shima and Fukasaku might have a genetic disposition towards sound jutsu due to them being toads (and summoning animals), so it could be significantly more complicated for a human to do something like that with their own voice.

Then there'd also be a greater range of ability that can be used with Thunder Release than can be done with regular means. And it at least fits in thematically with the elements that compose it such as (presumably) water and lightning creating Storm Release. There's the nature of respective elements that make it up; lightning uses vibrations and one of its traits is diffusion which would fit in with sound waves, whilst it can also have many deadly applications and mainly uses the air as a medium which would tie in with wind.

Other than that, I also couldn't think of what else might fit with Wind and Lightning.

One theory I had on the elemental chakra system of the Narutoverse is that it's not some set-in-stone inalienable set of laws of the universe's metaphysics, like the magic systems in many other fantasy settings are. Ninja aren't conjuring into existence water, fire, earth, electricity, etc. They're inventing new kinds of chakra that mimic the properties of those natural elements.

In other words, chakra elements are all man-made constructs, and thus different people using the same elemental combinations might create different results. Thus there being three different kinds of Lava Releases, all hailing from different villages. There's also many different kinds of magnet release - Kumogakure's which magnetizes both shuriken and people and several in Sunagakure. The Third Kazekage's which magnetizes iron, The Fourth Kazekage's which magnetizes gold (which is *not* a magnetic metal) and (in my head-canon) Gaara's, which magnetized sand.

I therefore think it's fair game for anyone to attribute any elemental effect to any elemental combination as long as they can justify it somehow. You want lightning + wind to equal sound? Great, maybe that's how the frogs do it. You could also claim that the molecular vibration of lightning combined with the molecular cutting blades of wind could produce an advanced element that disintegrates matter in much the same was as the rasenshuriken does, and I think that's equally valid. Maybe some clan somewhere has learned to do precisely that, or no one has yet tried to combine them that way but it's totally possible.

Hell I bet it would be possible to combine the Five basic elements with Yin and Yang element release to produce even more unique advanced elements. Wasn't C from Kumogakure stated to specialize in "Raiton genjutsu"?

Personally I don't even see why they are limited to five basic element types. Maybe those are just the ones standard to the elemental countries, and people in other nations have developed different base elements and different advanced combinations. Chakra is a very flexible magic system, probably part of the reason the Naruto manga is so popular for fanfiction authors.

Rather than a theory, I'd say that's how it's intended to be. Hence why the relationships between the elements work the way they do; it's not lightning beats earth, it's lightning chakra beats earth chakra. The fire element is literally described as "flame-like, high temperature chakra" and the wind element is "blade-like chakra".

Though it makes me wonder about earth and water jutsu since they are mainly changed the shape of the existing elements rather than creating whilst wind jutsu is half-and-half.

I've never considered why they're limited to five/six elements. Perhaps it's because those are the ones that the Sage discovered so they are the only "official" nature transformations despite the others that might have been developed. Or maybe they are the only ones that they've figured out how to do nature transformation training for as opposed to using hand-seals. Jiraiya is shown to create oil from chakra, Shizune creates "special chemical substances and there's acid/alkaline and shadow manipulation.

Edit: Or it could be a genetic thing thanks to their affinities since apparently everyone leans towards one of the five elements.
