There's also, you know, no fifth outer planet -- although it's always been curious that Jupiter was part of the inner group in the series when it's one of the Jovians in reality. And Pluto is just... odd. Take a look at pictures of its orbit compared to the other eight sometime; it clearly doesn't fit.
Actually there's Nemesis, but given how its' senshi is basically Death Phantom and the entire planet apparently is largely made up of Jakokusuishou/Evil Black Crystal -- which is how it escaped detection through the 21st century-- reducing said world to its component atoms and pretending that it never existed is probably a worthwhile goal.
On Jupiter and Pluto; a lot of it has to do with their duties as mentioned above, and that said labels are actually fanon ...well the Inner one anyhow.
--Warning ramble below--
In the original version of the manga Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury are officially referred to as the
yon shugo shin no senshi (or
yon shugo jin no senshi), which means
soldiers of the four guardian deities, (That phrase first appears in act 9 of the manga.) One card shows
“Four Guardians†in Roman letters and
yon shugo shin (
four guardian deities) in Japanese. They are referred to as the
Guardians in the new cover editions (shinsban: Pretty Guardian Sailormoon) of the manga books. On pg 107 of the second volume of the new cover editions, the katakana-character combination that approximates
Guardian (
Gdian) appears above the kanji combination
shugo senshi, which means
guardian soldier. On pg 129 of that same book, the katakana-character combination that approximates
Guardians (Gdianzu) appears above
shugo senshi-tachi, which means guardian soldiers.
On the other hand Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto do introduce themselves in the anime and manga as the
gaibu taiykei san senshi, meaning
three soldiers of the outer Solar System; as well as pg 116 of the Materials Collection, Sailor Saturn, Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto are referred to as the
gaibu taiykei yon senshi, --
four soldiers of the outer Solar System.
--Rambling over--
Anyway our solar system in SM is quite frankly a freak of nature. By the end of the manga their are over fifteen life supporting worlds, which even in SM is considered something of a impossibility.
