Yeah, it's about what I (and others) thought, with them becoming their characters, hence what the Lara Croft expy has the impractical outfit (and Karen Gillian has both the body and the acting for it).
Also, Jack Black is an excellent comedian to play a bitchy teenage girl in a middle-aged man's body.

There are tons of references in there. Including several characters from various things, often heavily shadowed. The Iron Giant, Freddy Kruger, Deathstroke, the birds and riders from Joust, Duke Nukem, Harley Quinn, and I'm sure several more I didn't notice.
Vehicles include Kaneda's Bike, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, Mad Max's car, the A*Team Van, and what looks like it might be Kit from Knight Rider.
