The official databook description is that Naruto's 'far below average' due to misbehaving and poor grades. So basically, his Taijutsu is passable in that he knows how to punch and kick, but if his 'real' skills were at the level seen when he fought Kakashi... he's not just bad enough at it, he's dumb in general, which helps none. He probably pulled off that 'LET'S FIGHT FAIR' thing more often than not.

[Also, Naruto REALLY thinks little of Shikamaru and Chouji pre-Sound Four, insulting them. He has more respect for Kiba even if he's just mocking him.]

Pre-Chunin Exam Naruto was a little shit nobody liked because he was a little shit(still thinking he was marginalized because that, more than because the fox)

Academy!Naruto probably just got B in Taijutsu by pure bullheading through his opponents+actually being capable to do the Kata sequences right, but did lack the direction to combine them in actual fighting skills

I can't even consider the whole 'Dumb in general' for Naruto as a reasonable statement. Kishimoto, through out the entire damn series, kept Naruto comically dumb on purpose. Seriously, it was cute and endearing at first, but that trait kept going on and on and on when even he isn't stupid enough to utterly forget the nastier abilities of his enemies. (Nagato comes to mind, oh my god I wanted to drop a bomb on Kishimoto's head when, already seeing and understanding Nagato's ability to drain chakra from techniques, he goes and throws yet another Chakra technique at Nagato.)

Right there, that moment is when I replayed the skit from Far Cry 3. 'Do you know my definition of insanity?' Doing the same shit over and over again and expecting a different outcome.

Okay, new Pet Peeve: Dumb!Naruto. Not to be mistaken with Naive!Naruto or Ignorant!Naruto or even Naruto-Catches-A-Goblin!Naruto. Cause I can swing all those things. I just feel pain when it's Dumb shit over and over again.

TBH, even Naruto firing off another chakra technique at Nagato after seeing use of the Preta Path ability didn't strike me as a moment of pure idiocy, IMO. Naruto was in the middle of a fight. Combat reflexes and all that. Plus, didn't Nagato have him in some kind of hold or restraining technique?

I took that scene as more Naruto reflexively operating on instinct and it not working for once, rather than Naruto just being dumb.

As I see it:
Dumb!Naruto is kind of a dumbass, with lower-than-average intelligence.
Naive!Naruto probably isn't dumb but he has a childlike way of looking at things, which makes him look dumb at times.
Ignorant!Naruto isn't dumb either, he just doesn't know much.

Dumb!Naruto is... well... borderline retarded. People tend to portray him automatically as failing anything and everything he's trying to accomplish because he just doesn't understand anything thats going on, and his attempts to 'fake' awareness of the situation makes it even worse.

Naive!Naruto doesn't look past the surface on most things. Like a woman expressing interest in him with ulterior motives; He'd just think she liked him to be her friend. Perhaps she wants to ferret information? Perhaps she wants to get involved with him? (Example; Hinata. Took a damn trip into memories to get Naruto cognizant of the potential for a relationship. Naive!Naruto doesn't last very long generally, at least on certain topics as he quickly learns to see underneath the underneath, as it were. Closest to Canon Naruto I can think of)

Ignorant!Naruto... this is essentially Just barely Post/Pre Academy Graduation Naruto. Best example I can think of off hand is the heinous way Naruto was going to steal Sakura's first kiss (If not for Hersey Squirts). It shows a complete lack of knowledge when it comes to social norms, what personal space really is, or how (in this example) society works/accepts things in general. It's a sure sign of him lacking those adult values impressed upon children as they're growing up.

Really, I would love to read a story that explores the world from the mind of a Naruto so ignorant of societal norms he can't understand why people are having problems with him.

I remember seeing this story once where they did that. Naruto stumbled on Edo Tensei in the scroll instead of Kage Bunshin, had absolutely no grasp of the concept that almost everyone looked at summoning the dead as something awful. I think he had like some keepsake of Kushina's that had some of her hair in it, sacrificed Mizuki to summon her, and horrified Iruka at how nonchalant he was about the whole situation.

I saw one like this, but with a piece of Madara instead of Kushina. And since he did the technique a bit wrong, Madara couldn't escape

I remember that one. It also brought Madara back as an old man. Even had Naruto mess with Fuinjutsu, only he pretty much smashed his face into a jar of ink and made squiggly lines and some how made a super explosive tag

Then a "funny" scene where Hiruzen took Kushina red handed in the cemetery.

Only way I see that working is if Kushina comes back and, unlike everyone else reanimated by it, she actually remembers what the afterlife is like. Only, hot 'heaven', but HELL!

Yeah, I'd go apeshit with Edo Tensei and a Ignorant!Naruto any day of the week

Basically. He can follow instruction, can throw a punch or launch a kick, but in the end, his ability to use that knowledge in a way that would allow him to win was horrid. Remember the first Bell Test? That was Naruto fresh out of the Academy -- idiotically making a grand spectacle of the thing, then throwing wide and predictable attacks that don't land while not bothering to put up a guard. If fighting were a video game, Naruto would be a button masher that tries to do that super-cool attack to win games. Of course, his stamina makes him hard to outlast, so if you can't beat him directly, you're going to lose to him, of which Academy!Sakura would, since Iruka implied quite strongly in his speech to Team 7 during the Chunin Exams that endurance and strength was something she lacked, at least in her Academy days.
