You all should be aware of what's been going on with PIPA and SOPA. Wikipedia, Google, and a bunch of other sites brought it to your attention if you didn't know before.

But you might not know that shit has gotten real.

The US Government is already in the process of SOPA style shut downs. Megaupload is down. As are Megavideo and Megaporn. Their owners and a number of major officials were arrested and taken into custody on and off of American soil.

Additionally, a number of other websites were also taken down, number over 600, and restraining orders and injunctions were handed to the biggest search engine and Web companies in the world barring sites such as Google and Yahoo! from indexing or linking to the sites in question.

In addition, the federal judge allowed Chanel to seize the domains and transfer them to US-based registrar GoDaddy without any say from the defendants. Furthermore, according to the court ruling, those that even promote the sale of Chanel goods, legitimate or otherwise, can be added to the injunction and seized in the future.

In response, Anonymus attacked, shutting down the websites of the Department of Justice, the RIAA, the Universal Music Group, MPAA, the US Copyright Office, EMI, HADOPI, and the FBI.

Anonymous has this to say:

  January 19th, 2012
 ?
Popular file-sharing website megaupload.com gets shutdown by U.S Justice - FBI and charged its founder with violating piracy laws. Four Megaupload members were also arrested. The FBI released a press release on its website which you can view here:
  <a href='http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/justice-department-charges-leaders-of-megaupload-with-widespread-online-copyright-infringement' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-rel...ht-infringement</a>
 ?
We Anonymous are launching our largest attack ever on government and music industry sites. Lulz. The FBI didn't think they would get away with this did they? They should have expected us.

Part of me is really hoping this is the beginning of a war. How can the US want to lecture China on censorship when they pull this bullshit?

I agree with you on the first part. Second part: it's the United States. They believe themselves to be the helicopter parents of the world.

It went rather decently until the last decade. Who else has the power to do it? The UN? The EU? The Middle East? Russia? You didn't seriously expect no one to try in this increasingly globalized economy, did you?

They're trying to make the first amendment against the law, basically.

As outlined <a href='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LEb_D2SD3k' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Here</a>.

The worst part is their seeming backup plan if plan C and D fail. (Plan's A and B outlined in the above video.)

Plan E: PCIP, The Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act, they've been holding it for awhile now, we're pretty sure, when SOPA and PIPA fail, they'll just copy and paste their content into PCIP and walk it through Congress with a BIGASS Troll face on.

Congress cannot vote against a bill like PCIP.

It can't, even Obama can't touch it.

There isn't one. <a href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_Item_Veto_Act_of_1996' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Line-item Veto</a>. There was one, for about a year before it declared unconstitutional. Every attempt since has been denied and shut down.

>_> Not buying it. I'm sure that's the intention but it's only going to take someone calling it SOPA mk. II for debate shitstorm to once again resume.

There could be some spin on this... Bring up the issue of a Congress willing to use such a serious issue as child abuse to satisfy media lobbyists and passing very damaging internet legislation.

Child abuse is bad, but using it as a means to an end is even worse.

But it won't matter to the 60somethings in the positions of power here.

I think I'm moving to Denmark after college. :sweat2:

Oh god.

After some research.

I have discovered that this is part of a Milkman Conspiracy to rape the first amendment.

Look:

Plan A: Whine at Congress:
Result: Audio Home Recording Act
AHRA: Passed
Media Industry Opinion: Failure

Plan B: Digital Millennium Copyright Act
DMCA: Passed
Media Industry Opinion: Failure

Plan C: Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property
PRO-IP: Passed
Media Industry Opinion: Failure

Plan D: Internet Investment, Innovation, and Competition Preservation Act
IIICPA: Failed
Media Industry Opinion: Failure

Plan E: Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Act
IPREA: Failed
Media Industry Opinion: Failure

Plan F: Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act
COICA: Failed
Media Industry Opinion: Failure

Plan G: Stop Online Piracy Act
SOPA: In Congress

Plan H: Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intelectual Property Act
PIPA: In Congress

Plan I: Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act
PCIP: Backup Plan

Geez, this is what typically happens to legislation that is repeatedly denied but has stubborn backers. This IP stuff wasn't the first & it won't be the last. It will go on perpetually, the backers will go bankrupt, it will pass, or something else. If you want to start on conspiracy stuff, I suggest you start researching every lobby of note. Undoubtedly you'll find something in each one to wave the conspiracy flag over.

I recall the same thing happening to the insider trading stuff Congressional members can do. Repeatedly introduced, repeatedly denied until the backers gave up. I think the EPA has lots of fun with this too - regulations that keep getting send back for revisions, the whole 'overreaching of the Clean Air Act'.... Didn't the financial regulations go through this mess multiple times through the years as well?

Yeah, except the Media Industry found a free pass that will let them walk whatever they want straight through congress with unanimous votes.

Exploiting Children to Disregard the First Amendment and Institutionalize Global Censorship (Act).

ECDFAIGCA.

Damn that sucks as a name.

It works though. (Probably not if they call it that.)

The Media Industry, is now officially a group of Super Villains.

Captain America, damn you for being fictional and belonging to Marvel.

He would be depressed as shit to know his universes new god is evil, and that he's now one of their spokespeople.

All we have is Anon:

And what will technically turn out to be an over the top April Fools day joke if they can get it to have any impact or spread the word about it enough to matter before PCIP trollfaces through Congress and the Internet get's the GREAT CENSORING.

Because that's basically what it is?

It's World Wide Web War 1.

Newsflash: we're the unregistered side.

Newsflash 2.0: We lose if we don't find a way to smash PCIP without looking like Pedophile's.

Personally, I find it funny, that they lose more money trying to get the sharing to go away, then from the sharing itself.

I mean, the most popular downloads? Games that aren't sold anymore, at least not anywhere but Ebay, and no money spent on Ebay get's back to them anyway.

So every single downloaded copy of a game they don't sell anymore, costs them no money at all, because they don't sell the product.

And most emulator's for modern system's are.... Pieces of Shit that can hardly play jack.

So Torrenting PS3, Xbox and Wii games? Pointless, because you can't play them.

Actually, this blackout needs to be effective Feb 1 until the end of March. It has to be ongoing at the time that the debates in congress are going on. They have to understand, both congress and the Media corps, that we still have power.

Wanna bet the government uses the Anon hacks to push through some gawd awful Internet terrorism act that makes the great firewall of China look like a tissue paper pinata?

We can't do that.

Not for two months.

Also, since there are conflicting sources, when is SOPA going in NOW?

Or PIPA for that matter.

I was wondering when the "Won't Someone Think of the Children" angle was going to be brought up.

I'm for this "Black March" protest. I certainly have plenty of media I haven't gotten bored with to keep me entertained for a month.

That might include a DVD that's been unopened for 10 years....
