I wouldn't recommend Hill of Swords except maybe as a parody.
The fact that there are people who scream and whine about its faults but continue to read it in order to whine should tell you that its worth keeping on the list.
I read it so that I don't become one of those people who complain about things they know nothing about. If we follow your logic, every fic in existence should be on the list because the detractors either don't read (and thus know nothing) it or continue to read it (and thus, allegedly secretly like it).
That's a weird logic. Granted, I stopped reading after the first chapter, and TM has a horrible selection of fics for someone who doesn't like Shiki, Archer or Rin.
Weird yes, but if only I had a penny every time someone said "You never even read/watched/played x, so obviously you can't dislike it!" or "If you didn't like it, why are you still reading/watching/playing x?".
I look at things, which can vary in seriousness and subject from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace to WWII and the Third Reich, and I see/feel that these things are somehow wrong or bad. But where most people would stop at that point, I feel the need to see exactly why these things are bad, in all the ways they're bad, and in each and every instance where you can say "Okay, that particular moment just made me hate this thing just a little bit more".
It's not something that's limited to things I dislike, of course. I like to gather every bit of information available on the things I like as well.
Basically, whenever I feel strongly enough about something, whether positive or negative, it sorta becomes my hobby for awhile. Or a new part of my hobby.
Granted, something like HoS would have just slipped off my radar after a while. . . if people weren't regularly bringing it up again. Every time someone posts about a new update, it's like the feeling I got when I heard a second plane crashed into the Towers. I don't want to see it, but at the same time, I kinda do, if only to see how bad it got.
Oh, and I hate leaving things unfinished.
