Uh... if you don't know what the problem is just by looking at it, you probably don't have the programming knowledge to fix it. Just saying.

Well, rather where the problem is--yes, the problem itself is pretty obvious; it's not recognizing certain characters. But oddly, it's only really doing that in story posts; all my posts got goofed, but none of my replies were messed up. I'd need to figure out specifically why its doing that, which is a bit hard to do without knowing what's responsible for the problem in question--which is going to be a part of the site's coding itself, rather then anything with a higher level then that (if you look at the HTML, even that's goofed).

Once the source is found, fixing it should be easy enough. Though perhaps you're right and I'm underestimating the issue. Again, I wouldn't know without seeing it.

It's not just doing it in story posts.

The problem is that the database was fed UTF-8 characters that were expected to be UTF-16

You'll notice some people will ahve the problem more than others (depending on their system locale), and those who make their stories in Word or Office will have specific characters spaz out- generally directional doublequotes, directional single quotes, ellipsis characters, and other extended characters.

Go look up a bit about character encoding before you even think about programming a bot for this or you'll wipe out half the board on accident.

It seems self-evident to me that the problem is a result of the transition. Either Shirotsume's bot didn't recognize certain symbols when ripping the old site and just substituted these nonsense characters in, or something happened in the conversion process that had the same effect.

The bot was programmed to read in UTF-16 and write UTF-8. Apparently python doesn't switch encoding very well, because instead of changing things like “ to ", it just threw it's hands in the air and went "Fuck it, spam ALL THE s!"

OK, good news- I just found something that may make the transition simpler- give a second to test. The double quote before the s was a copypasted diamond symbol.

It was a problem with the bot? I'll admit, I hadn't realized that, though I suppose it's pretty obvious in hindsight. I'd figured it was a problem with the site itself, but this probably makes more sense and explains why the problems occurred where they did. In my defense, I hadn't been around when the bot was running through everything and had no way of knowing it was using UTF-8 just by looking at the problem.

Alright, I've decided.

I simply cannot allow this travesty, this miscarriage of justice to continue any longer.

Ryuugi, I've never really considered us to be friends. Acquaintances, yes. Comrades in arms, perhaps. But nothing more. But today, on this day, I say that we must become something more, not because we wish to, but because we must. Because fuck that other guy.

So I hereby withdraw my campaign for Moderator.

Friends, minions, loyal subjects and mislead puppets, I had wished to become the moderator of this fine forum and I know many of you had faith in me and in my abilities and for this I thank you. But unfortunately it was not to be. Sadly, in this election we face a far greater threat. The threat of the other guy, threatening to steal our election through the most underhanded possible method. Democracy.

And it is for this reason, and no others, apart from a single solitary screw you Zephyrus, that I fully endorse Ryuugi for the third and final Moderator. Because if I am to lose, I am damn sure prepared to pick who it is that I shall lose to.

So flee my minions, FLEE INTO THE NIGHT, and vote for Ryuugi, because screw the other guy.

brb, switching vote to chrono.

You'd already done that, I've been keeping a list of who has voted for who, since certain people started a voter harassment campaign slash libel campaign and like twenty people switched votes three times.

I feel bad for Tk, he's kinda my bud to and like half his votes just ditched him out of petty spite.

I was saying that as a joke to Vex.

I switched from Zeph to chrono yesterday because he asked me (and everyone else that voted for him) to change their votes because he felt they were wasted since he had only a few.

I dunno what your problem is, man. I, along with many others, have voiced valid concerns about your modhood.

I haven't said "Fuck you!" or made any verbal attacks on your person. Tired of your shit, Vex. Lose gracefully, at least. Don't be a dick.

The other two threads went fine, why did this one go to hell? It would have been better if nobody could comment on the damn polls at all.

Shirotsume

Because it wasn't a given who would win this time.

or alternately, depending on how much of a dick you want to be, because Ryuugi/Vex had a chance this time.

Vex has people vehemently opposed to him, and Ryuugi's comments about calling in people from other boards to vote for him did not endear him to people.

It doesn't help matters when actual non-fake corruption happens.

I mean holy ham sandwich of justice people, this is an election to the lofty position of forum moderator, you'd think it wouldn't need to be stated how simultaneously stupid and uncool it is to try and rig it.

For fuck's sake, why do I have to put on the mod hat for elections? This is NOT what I wanted to do.

In a UNANIMOUS decision, the mod staff has decided to warn both Vexarian and Zephyrus. Zeph for baiting, and Vex for being incendiary. The warnings will expire, but we'd like everyone involved to calm the fuck down.

If you feel that not everyone got their just dessert, report a post where you personally came under attack and The Staff will be happy to hand out warnings like candy on Halloween.

I'd just like to point out that, since Vexarian dropped out of the race and endorsed Ryuugi, Chrono's lead has only grown.

Er... I haven't seen zeph being baity in this thread. Did I miss it?

We're not, sorry. We've gotten complaints in the IRC (which doesn't count) and an actual moderation request. We decided to step in before things got too heated, or worse spread to the rest of the forum.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that it wasn't Chronodekar, who is the only person on this forum who would have any right to complain whatsoever.

Huh. I just checked to see how difficult it is to fix messed up posts and...if you try and edit them and then just click save changes without doing anything else, TFF fixes everything itself. Or, at least, it does that with Story threads; still doesn't like the hrefs and stuff.

Still, if it's just a matter of fixing stories, that makes things pretty fucking trivial. Still probably not enough to do it in a day like Vex suggested, since there's a lot of story posts, but even doing things manually, it wouldn't take too long. Relatively speaking, at least.

Oh. yeah, I was going to mention that, actually, I noticed that may have happened when I posted that one with the broken symbol and it interpreted it correctly. I forgot to because I was setting a joke for vex.

Any idea why the <a href> stuff doesn't work? It should be normal HTML text, right?

Oh, or did it just become normal text when the bot broke it? That'd make sense, too, I guess, and editing wouldn't fix that, since nothing would technically be wrong with it.
