I recommend this for something very important:? the writer is trying to write life, not just some kind of fantasy story.? No author projections, no sugary mush, but the bittersweet taste of life itself.? It's actually something some of us here could aspire to write one day, regardless of fandom.? Bringing the characters just that half-step closer to reality can often make us create better stories.
Are you high?
Nope, dead serious. It just has a goofy title.

One problem I've noticed here is that too many of the writers take themselves too seriously, but do not take the stories they write seriously. Part of how so many threads/stories degenerate so quickly. Good ideas get ruined that way, and end up mediocre stories.

I remembered Thousand Shinji (and presumably, The Open Door) were recommended here, so I figured this was the place for my current recommendation.

It's called The Doorstop.

It's a very interesting deconstruction/AU of The Open Door, where New Chaos lacks both Plot Armor and Automatic Moral Superiority. The TSAB is taking the lead against New Chaos, and it's using Spiral Drivers (gotten from trade) to augment the New Republic and Alpha Quadrants into fighting alongside them.

Up to 40 chapters & 176K words now, and in the latest, Chrono followed in his father's footsteps by sacrificing his flagship to keep Chaos forces from getting to the rest of his fleet. This is not the first time something unfortunate (beyond stuff pulled from AcademiaÆs works) has happened to canon characters.

Update patterns are slightly sporadic, usually a couple months of downtime, then two to five chapters covering a couple plot arcs broken into digestible chunks.
Thank god, that fic needed a deconstruction, Chaos is NEVER nice because it's too wraped up in it's own flaws.

Hey, so, I was going through some author's Favorite Stories on FF.net (says the stranger in your torn-apart garbage bags, holding a used TV Dinner), and I came across this charming little non sequitor.

I'm not just posting it here because I enjoyed it (I did), and want to share it (I do), but I was wondering if anyone artistically talented could work up a picture of this diner, right as the Doctor and the Major step in, and everyone notices each other, or shortly before, with everyone involved in their own conversations.

I've just got this picture in my head, like those pictures of a diner on some random evening with the...the colors, and...Crap, I'm blanking on how to describe the style of pictures I'm blanking on, and I can't find a reference or sample online.

I just think it could be a poignant, awesome picture, and I was wondering if anyone here would make it, or know someone who would make it.

And, uh, then share it with me, rather then hoarding it to themselves.

Thanks in advance.

Not something new perhaps, but a really good read.

Shinji and Asuka manage to live on after 3I and somehow find a way to live with each other and then they are thrown back to the past just before the 12th Angel. Warning bells sounding? Well not to worry.

The Author somehow manages to write a story that is both believable and moving, and while it is not an !!!EPIC!!! with all the bells and whistles, it is like reading a nice heart warming book in the depth of winter.

I give you The 2nd Try by Jimmywolk:

Oh and the sequel is a webcomic which is really really cute.

The Tenant of Room 404

This is an SI, however it's different in that the character doesn't become a pilot. In fact he starts as the gardener at the Children's school. It does use a bit of plot convenience to drop him in (in the form of Leliel) but I find that acceptable.

There's plenty of original characters, but they don't detract from the story. In fact, at times it makes you feel like you're reading a novel instead of fanfic. On the forum it's posted on, the story's been described as:
Eva meets cyberpunk meets Tom Clancy meets John Woo meets Douglas Adams meets Postmodernism meets Shinichiro Watanabe meets Blue Drop meets fever-dream sci-fi Marxism meets stuff, things and shit.
As a fair warning, the story's pretty long and rife with gun porn. There's also some fairly graphic scenes.

EDIT: Graphically violent, that is. Not lemons.

Speaking of which, I just ran across a new fic by Academia Nut:

NGE: Utter Insanity

While it's rather short at the moment, the premise shows promise: After an attempt to bring some beer to his drinking buddy Nyarlathotep, Tzintchi finds out about T!Rei and her shake-up of the ANE-verse. Which means only one thing, road trip!

Plus, here's a quote that had me laughing;

While one never gets used to it, a certain sort of normality eventually develops around persistent haunting, in that after the first couple of times of a ghost girl randomly showing up to scare the shit out of you while in a compromised position the unreal edge gets taken off as you learn to accept the fact that this is in fact happening. However, just when adapting to the existence of Alma had started to sink in, the man on point discovered that the universe could still throw him a total screwball.?

Which was to say that while the latest appearance of Alma wasn't unusual per se, the appearance out of thin air of a 1973 Volkswagen Type 2 complete with air brush art that appeared to have been done by Has Rudolf Giger while on a bad acid trip and listening to Finnish death metal was. As was the subsequent ramming and running over of said previously mentioned ghost by said van. Then, to add to the surreal air of it all, a pair of men dressed like a cross between ancient Egyptian pharaohs and the Blues Brothers hopped out of the van and began to wail on the undead girl with tire irons, splattering ethereal blood everywhere for the complete opposite reason to the one normally associated with such manifestations.?

While one of the men hopped back into the van, the darker skinned of the two turned to the point man and pointed an accusing finger at him, screeching, "Your mother is a buzz killing whore!" before he too re-entered the van, which drove off into thin air as abruptly as it arrived.?

On the ground, Alma twitched, in considerably more pain than she had ever experienced in her existence, which was really saying something. It wasn't every day that two deities pulled a hit and run beat down on her after all.

Deus ex Evangelion

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5093352/1/Deus_ex_Evangelion

Summary: Asuka Langley Sohryu is relocated from Germany to Tokyo-3 after the death of the Third Child in the battle against Sachiel. But soon she has to ask herself if Ikari Shinji is as dead as she's being told. And what exactly is she piloting...

What it sounds like, Shinji dies in the first fight only he's not so dead and Asuka has to deal with him and try to pilot at the same time. The characterization is pretty good and there was a rather amusing little snippet in the latest chapter after Asuka gets her allowance cut, again, and needs a loan.

"And no strings attached, or you'll think the last beating was a lover's caress, Suzuhara!" she repeated her warning, trying to sound as severe as possible.

"Yeah-yeah, of course," the idiot grinned goofily, "Pick you up at six on Friday?"

"Fine," The girl shortly responded, internally thanking her lucky star that the idiot was still a child. Six o'clock? Please. Probably a movie and a dinner at some crappy fast-food joint. Or maybe he was being thoughtful and didn't want her to think he had something untoward in mind by not setting the time later? Damn it, why was she now thinking that the date was something more than it was?

Turning around quickly, the girl marched out of the cage towards the cage observation room where Akagi was probably already waiting, leaving Suzuhara to catch up.

The boy just stood there, grinning like an idiot, until he turned towards the purple visage above him. His smile slowly slid off. Wasn't Unit 01's head much closer then it was before? Was it, like, glaring at him right now? Why were its eyes burning so brightly?

Without a sound, such a stealthy move seemingly impossible for a machine its size, the Evangelion twisted its right hand out of the restraints.

Then, ever so slowly, it ran one gigantic purple finger across its neck.

And then, said finger, the size of a medium car, pointed clearly at Toji.

The hand then, equally quietly, with only a slight groan of stretched metal, returned to its place, sneaking back into the restraints. The head, its terrifying horn gleaming in the lamplight, rose back to its original position and the bright-white eyes dulled to a steady pale yellow.

Robotically, forcing one leg in front of the other, Suzuhara Toji marched out of the cage, a grimace of unadulterated horror on his face, sweat running down his back.

Perhaps he should've thought the whole date thing through more thoroughly.

Awhile ago I ran across this hilarious rant/essay that said NGE made so much more sense with the genders flipped. "Shinjiko" and "Mansuka" were involved. Does anyone know where I can find that, since I should have bookmarked it. I really should have.
Googling Shinjiko Mansuka Evangelion, I came across this:
"The secret of Evangelion is that they took super robot pilots and reversed their genders. If Rei was male, he'd be the awesomely silent/cool/calm guy. When he rushes that angel with an N2 mine under his arm sacrificing his life ... that is the scene where MANLY TEARS flow for A MAN'S WAY OF LIFE AND DEATH. Asuka, if a man, would be an awesomely HOT BLOODED pilot. And pervy with his advances on Shinji, but a little tsundere. And Shinji, as a weak little girl, puts it into context. You'd be fapping furiously to Shinjiko every night because of her shy demeanour. And with girl Kaworu, Shinji x Kaworu would be amazingly hot.

Shinjiko has been called to NERV by her estranged father, called to pilot the EVA. She is reluctant, lashes at her father and says why had she been abandoned. Gendo silently orders Man Rei to resume piloting. Manrei comes out, arm in cast, bandage over face. He stoically lifts himself from the hospital bed, ready to fight on.

This is the part where your eyes moisten, for this MAN OF MEN will FIGHT TO DIE, Silent to Death, bound to duty

And yet... only a weak little girl abandoned by her father can face the killer angels in his place.

And imagine the reaction to star HOT BLOODED pilot Mansuka, kicking ass and ass kicking angel killer, saving Shinjiko's ass here and there, but she's catching up.

She's caught up

She's surpassed him.

Out does him consistantly, leaves him behind. For a man who swore to be the best of best, to be second to none, swore on the death of his mother who never loved him... outdone by a timid weak little girl. That would drive him mad, frustrated, furious, psychotic.

End of Evangelion- Mansuka alone faces off against the mass produced Eva's. Mother is with him, he will fight."
I don't know the original author; this is copypasta of another copypasta.

ôSir! Missile Battery A-7 has been annihilated!ö

Sub-Director Kozou Fuyutsuki scowled at the readout. Group A û mostly comprised of chemically-propelled projectile weapons û of the MAGI-controlled defenses were already attacking the Angel, to little effect other than gaining its attention. The Delta configuration was programmed to unleash its full potential only when an Evangelion was active in the field.

Unit-01 was still conspicuously absent.

Damn it Gendo, I know you have a taste for the theatric, but could you hurry it up with your son? Running a hand through his thick, combed-back hair of smoky gray, Fuyutsuki tried to think of a more fruitful way of keeping the Angel occupied. Hmm.

Inspiration hit. Somewhat-worrisome inspiration, but inspiration nonetheless. ôNo time like the present...ö

The Sub-Director, clad in a neatly pressed brown uniform, was often the picture of sanity and stability around NERV. After all, Professor IkariÆs eccentric nature was well-documented, as were those of Lieutenant Colonel Katsuragi and Dr. Akagi. Needless to say, it provided NERVÆs employees (and various governments around the world, for that matter) some measure of ease that there was a level-headed adult in NERVÆs command structure.

So when Fuyutsuki issued his next command, almost all of the bridge technicians blanched.

ôI did not stutter, ladies and gentlemen.ö

ôBut, we havenÆt tested them in live combat before! Dr. Akagi only just recently concluded a successful synchronization test with the Primary Coordinator, but we have no clue how heÆll perform! He hasnÆt even had any simulated combat exercises yet!ö

ôI have documented evidence from Lieutenant Colonel Katsuragi dictating otherwise, Lieutenant Hyuga.ö

ôSir, are we really counting arcades?!ö

ôYour objections are duly noted Lieutenant, but weÆre out of options. Plus, given what IÆve seen in person, I have faith in his ability.ö Ignoring Lieutenant HyugaÆs exasperated gasp, Fuyutsuki turned to a brown-haired woman sitting in front of the MAGI terminal. ôLieutenant Ibuki, is the system operational?ö

ôYes sir! WeÆre ready to go at any time.ö

Fuyutsuki smirked as he stepped forward, eyeing the one of the smaller screens in the MAGI terminal. Flashing on the screen in green was the symbol æP2Æ. Bringing a hand to his earpiece, the Sub-Director said, ôPen-Penàare you ready?ö

ôWark.ö

ôIÆll take that as a yes.ö Fuyutsuki gazed once more at the primary screen, eyeing the Third Angel as it destroyed a group of stationary mortars. ôItÆs time to put Dr. AkagiÆs system to the test. If you will Lieutenant Ibuki.ö

ôYes sir!ö The woman quickly typed in the activation code. ôLAUNCHING GUNDAMS!ö

The authors description runs something like...
Well, IÆm on a bit of an Evangelion kick thanks to Nobody Dies (by GreggHL; it's awesome and you should READ IT). ItÆs to the point where IÆve bought the box set of the entire original anime. Meanwhile, here on this forum, IÆve been following the dedicated update thread to GreggÆs story (writing various omakes, as readers of that thread have probably noticed). In the course of this, I made a note of how, long ago (as a young lad when Pokemon was first popular in America, during the era of Red/Blue), I caught notice of Dark Horse advertisements for the Evangelion manga on the back of a Pokemon comic. It featured the iconic image of Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Sohryu standing side-by-side, with Unit-01Æs face looming in the background.

The image codified my perception of their personalities, thinking of it as a standard, if popular, Giant Robot anime. Shinji as the Goku-esque Determinator, Rei as the snarky and icy-cold Drill Sergeant McNasty, and Asuka as the innocent, happy-go-lucky comic relief.

Imagine my shock when I saw the anime years later. I was off. Waaaay off.

But the idea intrigued various people. I posted a snippet. It caught attention.

And now I canÆt get the idea out of my head.
To date we've had Grapple Gun Gendo, SUPER MOTORCYCLE Misato, and railgun messaging.

It's been awesome.

Meanwhile, Gendou had seated himself at the table, hands steepled before him, and was regarding the array of NXE Series 3 action figures laid out before him. Abruptly, his eyes lit up, and he grabbed one out of the line-up.

"Oh, cool!" he declared. "I've got a spring-loaded grappling-hook gun with a retractor crank!" So saying, he aimed the little effigy of himself at one of the wall-mounted lamp sconces ringing the room, launched the aforesaid grappling hook, and then reeled the little plastic Gendou up with the crank. "How come I don't get anything this cool on the show?"

As a trope, grapple-gun Gendo is ten years old and due for revisiting! (NXE 3:1 dates back to 1999 or 2000).

I didn't think he acted 'cool' enough for me overlook it until the author finally decided to explain it. If s/he does.

But I suppose I can take another gander, sometime....later.

NGE: A Century Apart

The Angels don't attack on the year 2000, they attack on 1900. As a result, the world changes with America, Germany, Japan, and a few others taking the lead in a world just discovering the uses of electricity.

This is interesting in that Japan still has that Imperialistic fanaticism they had during World War II, yet it's obviously a more mellow version now that they've proven their own superiority. The Evangelions here seem to be purely mechanical and by all logic, Japan should be dead except that they've got the Lance of Longinus going for them.

It uses the same characters as the original so don't worry about OCs.

I'll admit that my summary doesn't do this story justice, but please check it out.
