Wait, is this why they killed off Rhodey?
They're afraid that if readers see too many black people in one comic, it'll be perceived as a "black" comic and sales will go down (
Just posting this link for no real reason. ::whistles::).

I'm okay with this, because I've felt for awhile now that it's better to allow heroes to retire, than keep trying to create new stories around them, and eventually driving them away from what makes that character unique. DC has had some success with heroic legacy characters (Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle for example), and Miles Morales and the new Ms. Marvel are doing well at The House of Ideas...so why not let the likes of Tony Stark and Peter Parker retire on top. You can still make use of them for big events and show them making the world a better place (or providing guidance to to the next generation) in new ways.
To be frank, I have never liked legacy characters. To me, it's just a copout to making new characters, new superheroes, and a good way of dodging the inevitable "retirement" issue. "We don't need to retire X when we can just put a
new person behind the symbol!"
No, really, I want to see new characters coming up with their own problems and their own methods for doing the crimefighting thing, all while unencumbered by the shadow of their predecessors. They can be inspired by pre-existing heroes, but, for better or for worse, they aren't those guys, much like how children share a lot of things with their parents, but they have their own interests and approaches to life.
