That first poster pic was deceiving. From some of the released character designs, it is much more in the mold of a modernized softer version of the manga designs rather than the classic gundam look of the poster.

It'd be awesome if they actually kept that animation quality for the whole show.

I'm hoping they improve the Uncanny Valley that was going on with this ep.

I watched it. It was cute. I'll probably watch the coming episodes.

*watches the episode* ... *facepalm* They... They gave this to a team of people who understand nothing about Sailor Moon, did they? This was painful to watch. I mean, seriously, did they even WATCH one episode of the old anime?

I should hope not - it's supposed to be based on the manga after all, not the old anime which pretty much had its own continuity. I liked it, scene for scene it was nearly the first chapter of the manga brought to full animation.

Yeah, and I think that's exactly the problem... I've tried reading the manga, I didn't like it. The anime? I loved it, growing up. For a few reasons.

1. Design. They didn't all look like anorexic barby dolls. The designs of the manga and this new anime are too pretty to be liked by all. The original anime design had the girls be pretty when they needed to be, but they still looked like normal girls most of the time. Also, they weren't afraid of superdeformed for comedy. Usagi is way too pretty all the time for a full range of emotion, in this. She's way too pretty for her voice.

2. The male characters. I know that it's also because of having to cut time, but I went and watched the old first episode again. First, no one was calling anyone an annoying nerd nor wondering at the injustice of him taking a higher mark and his reaction to the girls' jewel crazy was there. And was funny. Also, Endimion didn't go around wearing a tsuxedo, but normal clothes. He still looked cool, if not cooler.

3. No forced female empowerment message. Seriously, what the hell? I started scratching my head at the intro's lyrics. That's not making them appear cool, that's actually counterproductive. I remember liking Sailor Moon and her friends because they were cool, independent and also cute. They were funny, likeable people that killed monsters and protected the weak before being girls. Here is like they're trying to shove Girl Power down my throat instead of just letting me appreciate the characters.

I feel that Sailor Moon is one of those cases where the Anime improved on the original Manga, and choosing to stick so close to it for this remake will alienate a lot of the fans of the old one and a potential slice of target audience.

So, given your personal preferences and knowing that the new anime version would be a rehash of the manga that you knew you didn't like - is there any reason you would have gone into this thinking you would like it? I only ask because given your response, it just seems you're complaining about watching a show you knew you wouldn't like.

Personally speaking, I never watched any of the live action series or it's movies precisely because I knew I'd never like it, it is outside my preferences and they changed things I liked about Sailor Moon. I don't think that it broke the fanbase or ruined Sailor Moon for anyone and I believe the same for the new anime - a lot of people loved the manga, a lot of people will love the new anime, and for those who loved the old anime or the live action series... they're still around for you to enjoy.

Manga's first chapter had a lot more silly expressions than this episode did. I'm not sure why they decided to cut it out. TbH the old series and chapter one of the manga were identical excluding the Jewel Thief Mamoru. This actually had more changes.

As for girl power. This is shoujo and the old anime was just as bad. I'm not sure what you expected. Your nostalgia glasses are on because the old anime brought up stuff like that all the time. The episode they beat Jedite had them yelling, "down with misogynists. They reveled in being girls and doing girly things all the time. They were obssessd with boys, jewelry, being brides, cooking, clothes and assorted cliché girly things. Being girls first was an incredibly important part of the first anime. The manga actually had them less boy crazy and more focused on fighting villains.

Personally I'm glad they seem to be keeping Jewel Thief Mamoru and his obsession with tuxedos.

Hmmm... If what you're saying is true then something even rarer has happened. All that stuff was lost in translation when they dubbed it in italian. I remember them doing girl stuff, but it never came off as it does in the manga or this version. Also, I don't remember them saying stuff like 'down with mysoginists' even once. Bad guys/good guys banter, yeah, but never something so specific. Damn, I thought they only managed to do it with Saint Seiya... But I guess this is another case where the dub made the series better for me.

Also, didn't know this new version was going to follow the manga. I heard Sailor Moon and thought 'mah childhood!'.

Edit: to each his own... I prefer green jacket broad shouldered Mamoru.

I've watched all three episodes. I just didn't see anything I felt needed commenting on.

I liked it well enough but if you've read the manga there's no much to say. It follows it closely, with no filler yet.

I found it weird. Then again, watching too much Nanoha really skewed my definition of "magical girl."

When will the beams start flying?

Random phantom.
Sailor Venus uses finger lasers to attack and I suppose at least one of the Ladies-Not-Appearing-In-This-Season uses an attack that can be done through lasers, like Uranus with the Space Sord Blaster.

Most of the Sailor Guardians just don't have that kind of boy-friendly attack powers. Mercury plays the harp, Mars shoots birds, Jupiter creates typhoons, Moon creates flying hearts of pain...
