Sailor Venus uses finger lasers to attack and I suppose at least one of the Ladies-Not-Appearing-In-This-Season uses an attack that can be done through lasers, like Uranus with the Space Sord Blaster.

Most of the Sailor Guardians just don't have that kind of boy-friendly attack powers. Mercury plays the harp, Mars shoots birds, Jupiter creates typhoons, Moon creates flying hearts of pain...
I know, that is why I found it weird. I've watched the original when I was a kid and I thought it was normal. Card Captor Sakura was a bit cool too so I watched that as well. Then I was exposed to MGLN and PMMM where the "magical girls" were using guns and lasers and I loved them. Reverting back to the "traditional" magical girl powers now feels kind of strange.

Lets see if I can bear with it long enough.

There's a slight problem there...
The Nanohas aren't your typical magical girls.
They're more like Gundams that have taken the shape of pretty girls.
Also the Madokas... well... Gen Urobuchi is all I have to say there.

You might want to look into the Pretty Cures if you want more classic Magical Girls, even tho they've also been changing up the formula.

I have seen Pretty Cures, of course, and yes they lean towards your traditional magical girls, and I found them... meh. Also, notice that "Magical Girls" are inside quotation marks when talking about MGLN and PMMM, since I am very well aware of what they are despite the label.

I am curious as to how the remake turns out, since I heard this is more faithful to the manga (I haven't read the manga). My perceived weirdness on the adaptation aside, I am actually looking forward to it. Although I have to say watching this is sort of a guilty pleasure, since Sailor Moon IS one of the most iconic Magical Girl shows out there, not something a grown man normally watches.

...yes, because it's not universal enough for guys to like. Unlike freaking HORSES.

Not really interested in arguing that point, so instead, why don't you share your opinion on the animation? A lot of people are decrying the show because it's got horrible animation [supposedly], while I've been watching so far and haven't bothered to care.

I didn't get that first sentence... oh well.

Horrible animation? I'd say its a great improvement over the original. The character designs for the main cast, however, I feel are... too well done? They do not look like teens at all if you stare at them long enough. Heck, they look like European women.

I think you may have it there. For me going back to the OG and seeing the new one, the new one does look more refined (maybe less hand drawn) and so maybe the nostalgia radar is bugging me.

Plus I don't get the lipstick thing. Is it a shoujo thing? Because the only shoujo I read was Fruits Basket and I saw the anime and no girl had overdone lips like that.

It adapts the manga much more closely but with less of the cutesy stuff that flavored the manga every so often. Lips are not a shojo-demographic thing. It is stylistic and appears all the time in different types of anime.

You also have to remember that they are all really short aside from Makoto and Haruka (being average height) despite their arms and legs being a mile (or kilometer if that is your flavour) long.

Also remember, Sailor moon redefined and reconstructed the Magical girl genre when it came out even though she did is as a lark and was intentionally parodying the genre. It really is a sentai team show but with teen girls. Nanoha is really a spinoff gundam show that was based off a side character from another show/game/novel/VN/LN cloaked in sparkles and with beam sabres and beam spam and all. Just like how Escaflowne was the JRPG masked as a shojo anime. Madoka tried (and succeeded according to some) to be the Eva of MS intentionally with psychological bullshit and all.

If this was your gateway anime, obviously it is going to feel strange.

Honestly, if you are looking for typical Magic Girl anime, look at CLAMP stuff. They got great examples like Magic Knight Rayearth and CC Sakura. The stuff they got is typical examples of the genre. Well, before they do the CLAMP twist, for the first 1/3 at least.

The thing is that there really are no traditional magical girl shows unless you go really far back because everyone messes around with the formula intentionally. Even if you go back to the 80s or further, those magic girl shows are strange.

Seriously everyone mentions Naoko parodying the concept but she really never said anything of the sort to my knowledge. She just wanted to do a girl sentai team.

I'll take your word for it. :D

You do have to establish what 'magical girl' used to be back then. Which was less Patrine/Nantoka/Madocant and more Rurumo/Sakura, based on stuff I've seen. It was about girls getting magic or being magical, and less about fighting an evil entity and more about using magic to handle real life.

So it was a little more like the 70s version of That's So Raven, I guess.

IIRC, the creators of some of the earliest (if not the earliest) magical girl works back in the '60s said that they took some inspiration from the American sitcom Bewitched, so there's that.

That's not a very surprising influence. I seem to recall reading that the tendency for manga characters to be drawn with large eyes was inspired by Betty Boop.

Everything comes from somewhere.

So I managed to sit through the first three episodes and...

1. The character animations seem to go to exquisite to derp sometimes, so I guess that's one issue.
2. Why is Luna using the word "Princess" instead of the usual "Hime-sama/Hime" when referring to well... the princess? It unnerves me somehow.
3. There's the lengthy transformation sequences, but in CGI! It's cool the first time, but gets quite old really fast.
4. I don't remember Usagi being into girls.
5. Ami apparently has a tech upgrade from a magical palmtop to a magical laptop.

Usagi's girl crush on Rei was always there - rewatch the first anime where Rei is introduced (preferably subbed rather than one of the dubs) or even the introductory chapter for Rei in the manga. Usagi's appreciation of Rei's beauty in the manga made the one of the anime directors a fan of the two - IIRC he even gave the two more moments in the original anime run, though I don't recall how many seasons he was on the project.

Having only watched the horrible original English dub, I always wondered where all those Usagi/Rei fics came from... I kinda expected more Usagi/other senshi fics...

And I was kinda hoping Ami would end up with a holographic keyboard. That, or one that only showed up on her HUD when she had her goggles on.

Luna has those, which she uses to scout for... Sailor Scouts.

And with regards to Usagi liking girls, she also expressed how cute Ami was when she first met her and her reaction to Rei is "Damn, she's hot!" I may be looking a bit too deep into that, but I like my yuri goggles so... yeah.

I hope this time Tuxedo Mask doesn't fall into James Bondage territory.

Usagi thought every senshi was cute when she first met them.

Guys, it's not Scouts, it's Guardians.
It's neither, if you want to be rigidly technical. The original title referred to them is "bishoujo senshi"... basically, "pretty soldier".

But "Pretty Guardian" is a translation that Naoko Takeuchi liked when it was decided for the live-action production from several years ago.

And it's what's being used this time.

Terminology should be used as appropriate. Since they changed the terminology, people should use the modern one to refer to the new series and not the old series.

I'll use whatever title I damn well please.

Preach it brother. I prefer 'senshi', rather than 'guardian', but I'll take 'guardian' over 'scout' anyday. 'Scout' makes me think they go around neighborhoods trying to sell cookies and shit after destroying youma.

"Please, won't you help fund our fight against the darkness by buying some Sailor Scout cookies? Pretty please?"

I can't believe a pun has lead to a terminology mishap. Now I know how to piss some people off. >.<

I'm not too picky with titles so I guess I'll use whatever is deemed appropriate. I do have a problem with people using the American dub names.

Already looking forward to Act 5 for Makoto. Jupiter was always my favorite for whatever reason.
