Shokugeki no Souma

I meant that adding a line like

Does he want to completely fail?

accomplishes nothing in terms of building suspense when we know that there is absolute zero chance that it will actually come to pass. And honestly...

I'm not sure this girl even wants Souma to fail. Judging by her appearance in the chapter prior to this one, her beef seems to be with Erina and not Souma. Enemy of the enemy, and all that rot.

Sorry if I'm being a little too liberal with the spoiler tags, but this chapter is still pretty new.

...you do remember Souma just lost a Shokugeki and he was cursing himself for being the loser despite managing to get the moral victory, right?

It's not a matter of Souma's cooking being good enough to pass anymore. Protagonist Plot Armor may be required to keep Souma in the story for all three years of cooking, but it doesn't mean he can't fall or lose. His cooking could make Erina's legs quiver in pleasure but she refuses to accept him because he's plebe; Isshiki almost crushed him with how good it was, even if it drove him to go further; the match against the Alumnus was not even his own and he had to be put on a supporting role despite it being his challenge.

Even if we 'know' Souma isn't going to fail, who's to say he'll make the top 100 students again? Maybe he'll be among the bottom of the survivor class this time around.

He was put in a supporting role in that challenge so that he could 'lose' without being completely and personally tarred with the brush of failure in the eyes of the readers. In other words, Megumi got to take the 'fall' as it were in order to keep Souma clean. And Souma still came out of it punching a wall because he was pissed about losing. Because moral victories are worthless. Does it make any real sense that he's going to barely survive this challenge after that? It's much more likely that he's going to take his initial level up in badass with his dish this time around. Just not seeing much suspense with this one. I'll be impressed if the mangaka pulls a surprise, though.

Well, we'll see what the twist is next week. It's going be pretty pathetic if he fails this after just having his 'I'm getting serious now' moment with how that last contest went down.

The twist is he sucks at breakfast. Clearly the Yukihira shop was one made for lunch and dinner.

Well, the placement is also an issue. The problem might not be with his dish, but the fact he's next to Erina, who naturally draws the clientele away from him.

My guess is that he just hasn't gotten started yet. Souma isn't wearing his headband after all, which means he probably isn't cooking. So, the twist is that he decided to sit back and wait until all the other top contenders were done cooking so that he wouldn't have to compete for the guests' attention. Now that he has the stage all to himself, it's time to steal the show.

My theory is he's making a dessert of some sort or something.

So far there's been one particular egg dish that's been missing.

Didn't see any sugar on his tray to suggest one, but it's an interesting theory.

They're also not limited to only chicken eggs for their dish. Imagine Souma suddenly going, "Anyone have a hacksaw on them?"

Mangahere apparently finally added chapter 30's title which is "A Set Trap" So yea, he's up to something.

Chapter 31.

Got his work cut out for him. Somehow I see him getting so close but coming just shy of the mark, and we'll see how his plot armor protects him from the consequences this time.

Chapter 34.

It's a tweest.

Apparently Nakiri is obsessed with Souma's dad.

Also, adorable picture is adorable.

Doujima also finally put together the clues.

Things are about to get interesting I feel.

I wouldn't quite call that a twist. Unexpected perhaps, but nothing that really changes the direction of the narrative. All the connection between Erina and Jouichirou does is add another layer to what we already knew: that Souma's dad is the final boss. For Souma to get his dream (taking over Yukihira's), the girl, the respect, his dad's acknowledgement and everything else that his Happy Shounen Ending entails he's going to have to surpass his old man. But we've more or less known that all along.

Kinda curious on why the Father took the Mother's name instead of the other way around.

If Souma's Dad was cooking for Nakiri when she was around 6-8?, and Souma is the same age as Nakiri, how does the picture fit in chronologically?

It's likely that this was the last meal Joe did for the Nakiri before he left to focus on Yukihira's. We don't know why he decided to become a meal-of-the-day chef nor why he's been 'holding back' this whole time.

Remember, the lady from the first chapter wanted to close the restaurant because it was no-quality in her view. We know that Joe's cooking has a worldwide renown and prior to settling down, he cooked such amazing dishes that would have revolutionized the cooking world if people paid more attention. And yet, when he opened Yukihira's, he pretty much disappeared from the maps.

It's kinda hilarious that Erina doesn't realize who Souma is despite that. Maybe she only knows his first name, or even the Joe nickname, and can't associate that with some small-town cook. So if she realizes that... she's going to faint, I bet.

What do you guys think Erina's sister will do to Souma?

I'm actually more amused that Souma remembered The Most Important Rule of All: Remember your towel. You never know when a towel becomes a valid plot device. Need to get in good with suppliers for when you finally take over your family restaurant? Don't forget your towel.
