Your suspension of disbelief doesn't kick in when somebody gains attributes or form of something that drowned in a pool a thousand or more years ago due to a curse, but it does kick in a human wanders several thousand miles away from where his culture is and drowns in a pool?
That said, ancient Persia includes part of modern Iran, and the Persians fought on many occasions with the ancient Greeks. The western part of China at least isn't that far away from where Iran is.
