I'm not sure how I feel about weather control being a bloodline. It's a really cool idea, but I feel like any jutsu which directly manipulates the weather over a significantly large area would probably have to be a Sage Art, as it would need to control the flow of the planet's natural energy. I mean, the greatest and most comparable examples we've seen of weather manipulation in the manga were the Ten-tails and Kaguya, and both of them can control natural energy (Tenpenchii is explicitly described as "interfering with the natural energy"). Sure there was also Nagato's Rain Tiger at Will Technique, but that jutsu is weird in that it's not even elemental and Nagato also has the convenient justification of the Rinnegan which is capable of all sorts of bizarre, random jutsu.
I figured Rain Tiger at Will was Water Release but simply without the prefix as sometimes happens (e.g. Blade of Wind, Hidden Mist, Body Pathway Derangement). Even so, as far as we know it was created using the Rinnegan's mastery of chakra but isn't of the Rinnegan which technically makes it something that can be learned like anyone else so it's not too outside the realms of possibility. And there is Sasuke's Kirin which manipulates the lightning in a thunderstorm and potentially creates the thunderstorm itself if you believe that he intended to use it against Team 7 as I do.

So manipulating the weather totally with a combination of the three elements most deeply related to it seemed logical to me. Natural energy would be the most ideal way of doing so but not the sole means with Sky Release being the closest to it.

Wasn't there an anime filler character that could control the weather? I vaguely remember something like that.
Some kid called Yota apparently met the Rookie 9 when they were young and comes from a clan that earn money by manipulating the weather.

By the way, what do you think of my retconning of the Deva Path actually being a form of Gravity Release? Is that a plausible idea?
After thinking about it, it does feel like an odd route to that take. The Rinnegan grants potential mastery of all nature transformations but its Path only use a combination of three, and for some only one one kekkei tota out of all of them is tied to its power. The entry for Shinra Tensei apparently also mentions that "only one who can manipulate all chakra transformations properties" gets to have this gravity-manipulating power which makes it sounds a bit bigger than just a kekkei tota.

I was leery of even my own idea of a black hole which resembles Chibaku Tensei, though I guess the gravity power can be called a byproduct of the mass it creates rather than a direct manipulation, but this goes even further.

Maybe. I personally feel Force Release being a combination of Storm and Ice Release makes more sense. I'm struggling to understand what exactly the Fire element is contributing to a bloodline that creates hard light constructs. If you really want to use Water + Wind + Lightning for a different bloodline though, and don't mind having more than the five combinations you've already proposed, then Earth would probably make more sense than Fire.
Moar light, yo. Lightning and fire are the elements that naturally create it and even some of its advanced elements are linked to it, literally and symbolically. Though I don't really think of kekkei tota in terms of the advanced elements since the one canon example doesn't quite work in those terms but works fine when based purely on its component elements.

My mind's gotten stuck on these five so I can't help but get things to fit into that pattern.

The discussion about Natural Energy on the Questions thread made me think... Maybe Mokuton, or at least  Hashirama's (and Madara's), is called a Kekkei Genkai because of when it was first shown, but it is actually a Kekkei Tota?
I mean, we know of the Water+Earth part of it but, while it can be explained in a way it making plants grow and controls them, Mokuton as shown can actually create plant life from nothing.
Naruto makes Zetsus burst into trees when he touches them while covered in Kurama's Yang chakra.

I know it goes against what was first shown in the first databooks, but maybe Mokuton is actually Water+Earth+Yang.
That was last discussed in the posts following this one.

Alright, fair enough. I still feel that any kind of weather manipulation beyond a localized thundercloud should require senjutsu, even if only because I don't like the idea that a skilled enough Sage could theoretically match or even exceed the capabilities of a kekkei tota. Kekkei Tota really should be unique. But you've made a plausible enough argument for it so I'll let it slide.

I get where you are coming from. I also thought the same thing; why only Gravity Release? What's special about that one? Why not some Kekkei Genkai too? But then I thought about it some more, and I realized that almost all of the Rinnegan's powers are random and arbitrary as fuck. If those eyes can summon the god of the underworld, transform the user into a cyborg, summon a bunch of weird giant animals, absorb chakra, rip out people's souls unless they answer a question truthfully, animate a bunch of corpses, and resurrect the dead... then why the fuck not also let it give the user access to just one kekkei tota seemingly chosen at random? It doesn't seem any weirder than all that other bizarre shit it can do.

Plus it lets me expand on the concept of Gravity manipulation and come up with more jutsu related to it. Which is fun.

What does "manipulate all chakra transformation properties" even mean? Mastery of every basic element? Because Nagato doesn't actually have that - according to the fourth databook, he doesn't know yin release. Sasuke also obviously had not had time to learn Water, Wind and Earth nature transformation at the time he first used Chibaku Tensei shortly after having awakened his Rinnegan - unless one wants to claim that he did master them all prior to the Fourth Shinobi World War and simply never bothered to ever use any jutsu of those elements. Which is stupid.

Well, yeah this is kind of a good point. The Sage of Six Path's ultimate sealing jutsu of doom that sealed away the Ten-tails body and also Kaguya was basically a souped-up Chibaku Tensei, so that would imply that Gravity Manipulation is a Big Fucking Deal in the Narutoverse.

Still... Gravity Release would be a really cool bloodline.

Nice. I told you to think more abstractly when coming up with these bloodlines and you did not disappoint me. That justification is awesome. So yeah, I'm convinced then, Force Release can be Lightning + Water + Fire.

RE: The Naruversity

Really, there's only so much you can come up with that's unique and powerful, based on existing elements without actually being like those same elements and distinct from any other ability in this series. Even Sun Release toes the line as the idea is quite similar to Scorch Relase on a much bigger scale.

Checked out the business with the Rinnegan's nature transformation - because the reminder that Nagato's missing Yin Release when comparatively mundane dudes like Kakashi, Orochimaru, Tobirama and Hiruzen have got the full set is just weird - and the previous databook only mentions the five chakra natures when that comes up, so yin and yang may be superfluous in this context. They're the cherry on top but the basic five are the cake. Though why Shinra Tensei even bothers to mention it instead just saying "legendary Rinnegan wielders" I don't know...

Still... Gravity Release would be a really cool bloodline.
Indeed it would. Gravity is probably third on my list of cool superpowers in general anyway. :snigger:

RE: The Naruversity

Before moving on, what are the thoughts on how kekkei tota manifest?

My headcanon thus far is that they are an ability that stem from your genetics like kekkei genkai, but unlike them, aren't inheritable per se. They only appear when an individual a very specific combination of genes which may have never appeared in their bloodline before and may never appear again but is still a result of that same bloodline. Moreover, like kekkei genkai, it needs to awaken in that individual as well which is a rare thing because there aren't any specifics rules for awakening such abilities (excluding doujutsu) and because they have no idea they have the potential for it in the first place unlike the clans.

Mu awakened his Dust Release and taught himself how to use it. Either his acute chakra sensing allowed him to sense that Onoki possessed the same power and taught him its secrets, or Onoki discovered it for himself and was then apprenticed to Muu.

Edit: And backtracking slightly, I've been trying to come up with a canon character that could have Star Release without contradicting anything, being outright ridiculous and while trying to keep the spread of elemental kekkei genkai relatively even. I'm thinking Yura from the Hidden Sand who was known for his heroism and off-screened a bunch of ninja pretty damn quickly. Plausible or does it strain belief?

RE: The Naruversity

I think that Kekkei Tota probably are inheritable like Kekkei Genkai, but the genes are recessive, carried on multiple chromosomes, and haven't become common enough yet to predict when they will awaken and thus for their users to form a new clan around the bloodline.

There was probably one person who awakened Dust Release by random mutation long before the villages were created in the Earth Nation. They had a bunch of kids who could only inherited half of the required genes (because the other parent obviously didn't have the bloodline) and thus they couldn't awaken the power themselves. Pieces of the gene set spread throughout the population of the country as those children and their children and so on moved around and married into different clans. Then most of those different clans with the genes all moved in together in a single village when Iwakagure was formed, meaning that most of the genepool for Dust Release was suddenly concentrated in one spot. This greatly increased the odds of people with the recessive genes marrying each other and thus the odds for a child to inherit more of them. Muu was probably born to two very distantly related parents who unknowingly each had exactly the right parts of the recessive genes to make a complete set. He got lucky and inherited the correct genes from both of them and they became dominant and activated in him. His ability to awaken the bloodline seemed totally random to people who don't understand genetics. Oonoki likely awakened the bloodline the same way, through the random luck of genetic inheritance involving widespread but uncommon recessive genes. So while Muu and Oonoki seemingly aren't closely related, they probably had a distant common ancestor.

I believe that this is the same way that Kekkei Genkai are inherited, except that Kekkei Genkai powers are carried on fewer chromosomes (possibly even just one) so they awaken more often, it's easier to track who is a carrier, easier to predict who will awaken it, and they've existed longer so they've had more time to spread throughout the gene pool. (Hell, Lava Release is so widespread there are users in three different nations. There are probably so many recessive carriers of the Lava Release bloodline in the general gene pool that a active carrier could marry any random person and still have a decent chance of their children awakening the bloodline.)

I think Yura having Star Release strains belief. None of those guys Yura killed looked like they had been offed by plasma-like chakra. Too much blood. Also if he were THAT badass, I would think Pain would have just sent him to fight Naruto and his allies directly rather than sacrificing him to create that clone of Itachi.

Kekkei Touta (Knyght)

Ah, biology. My old foe.

Kekkei Touta

Kekkei Touta (Bloodline Selection) are a jutsu style which creates and combines three different chakra natures simultaneously to release the most powerful kinds of jutsu. They are the next level above elemental kekkei genkai which can only combine two chakra natures.

There are only five kekkei touta that have been known to exist in the past thousand years and have been possessed by a mere handful of shinobi in all that time. It's commonly speculated that there are many other kekkei touta that could exist from the remaining combinations but without any known users or historical evidence of their existence, no-one knows what they are or would be capable of.

Each one first manifested in an individual through genetic mutation like many kekkei genkai but unlike them, the requirements for them to be manifest again in their descendants are far more strict. The genes for a kekkei genkai are recessive and carried across multiple chromosomes and so the next person to be born with the ability needs both of their parents to possess the correct ones and pass them on, something that could take many generations to occur. Or it may never occur because the one with those genes dies without having offspring or don't manage to pass them on when they do. And even then, should someone be born with the kekkei touta then they would then need to awaken it which could happen at any time of their life or never at all.

Dust Release – The simultaneous creation of Fire, Wind and Earth to create a pulverizing force that disintegrates matter on a molecular level. It combines earth’s ability to alter an object’s composition, the destructive heat of fire and the severing blades of wind to break down any physical matter in the range of its effect. This jutsu cannot be defended against as any person, weapon or jutsu caught in its path is destroyed without fail.

The Second Tsuchikage Mu discovered this ability within himself and the formation of the hidden villages gave it more attention than any other examples in history. To the wonder of Iwa and vexation of its enemies, the young Onoki, who would one day become the Third Tsuchikage, discovered that he too possessed Dust Release and so Mu took him as his apprentice to teach him the secrets of their art. Unknown to both, these two posses a distant common ancestry as they both descend from someone who first awakened this kekkei touta long ago and their genes had spread across the Land of Earth in the following generations until Mu and Onoki were apparently both born to parents who possessed the correct recessive genes.

Sun Release - The simultaneous creation of Lightning, Earth and Fire to create a reaction resembling the nuclear fusion of a star. It combines the volatile energies of lightning and fire and binds them together with the stabilizing presence of earth to create a sphere of burning chakra not unlike the Sun itself. This chakra is so hot that it can melt solid stone and incinerate living creatures just from close proximity, it’s bright enough to turn night into day, and it can vaporize any foe or terrain when flared to the limits of its heat.

Force Release - The simultaneous creation of Water, Fire and Lightning to create solid constructs of light. It combines the innate light made from fire and lightning with the substance and fluidity of water to shape it into any form like moulding clay. By solidifying light they can create walls of light that block enemy intrusion, weapons able to cut, pierce and smash like the real thing, hands that can interact with the physical world and fields of intense light that blind any caught inside them. What is lacks in pure power in comparison to other kekkei touta, it compensates with a diversity in ability closer to any other jutsu style.

Void Release - The simultaneous creation of Earth, Water and Wind to simulate the effect of a black hole. These three natures capable of creating physical matter merge together into a small mass of chakra of such density that it warps spacetime, dragging in matter and energy crush them into oblivion. Its capacity for destruction is high but like most of its brethren is limited by the length of time that it can be sustained.

Sky Release - The simultaneous creation of Wind, Lightning and Water to manipulate the atmosphere into any type of weather. Each element interacts with the atmosphere in their surroundings to alter its conditions and reproduce almost any pattern of weather possible. It can summon rain flood the land, blizzards to bury their enemies, lightning bolts to shatter everything beneath the, thunder that can burst eardrums and winds to tear buildings from foundations. And any kind of weather that exists can be taken away, returned everything to a clear and calm sky as if nothing had ever happened.

The Third Mizukage himself awoke Sky Release and reached his position with its power but understanding the prejudice of his homeland against kekkei genkai, he disguised the nature of his powers as a mastery of fusion ninjutsu with wind, water and lightning chakra. This secrecy is why he never quite gained the same recognition as the Second and Third Tsuchikage.

RE: The Naruversity

Pretty good writeup. It might be worth mentioning that there theoretically many other Kekkei Tota that could result from the remaining possible combinations of chakra natures. Although they are a fairly common source of speculation among chakra researchers and scientists, their properties are unknown as there are no known users and no historical evidence that they have ever been naturally awakened.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it is likely that the known Kekkei Tota besides Dust Release are extinct. Due to the way genetic inheritance works, there is a significant risk that any trait possessed by only one person would be lost forever after only a few generations. Dust Release was likely only able to reawaken because the original user was very "prolific" and their many, many descendants mostly all became ninja. When Iwagakure was founded all those ninja descendants who possessed recessive genes for the bloodline gathered together in one place and started intermarrying, which created the slim potential of a dominant carrier being born again.

Of course, it's not exactly that simple. For all we know, some of the genes for Dust Release may even be shared with other traits such as Lava Release. So it may be that a significant percentage of the population of Iwa has, say, 90% of the gene set necessary for Dust Release. Perhaps Muu and Oonoki were both rare carriers of the final gene necessary to activate the latent power... or perhaps part of the gene set had actually been lost forever from the gene pool, and they both reacquired it through a pure random mutation. Genetics is really complicated, it's impossible to say for sure how it happened.

RE: The Naruversity

Made some edits in light of that. Though I don't think Mu or Onoki's Dust Release can be attributed to the formation of Iwa since Onoki is 79 years old which I believe puts his birth before even Konoha was created and Mu was already a grown man in comparison.

Ice Release/Scorch Release (Knyght)

Ice Release (Official Version)

This is the advanced nature transformation created by combining wind and water chakra to make ice and snow.

Ice Release is among the most versatile of the advanced elements due to its composite chakra natures, capable of being moulded into all kinds of shapes as it can easily be adapted for offence, defence and anything in between. It can create ice as sharp as a blade and as hard as rock, snow that can engulf any enemy under its weight or cold that can freeze the very earth and air around them.

The Yuki Clan of the Land of Water were the undisputed masters of Ice Release, taking advantage of their homeland's cold, wet climate and proximity to the sea to fuel their powerful chakra natures. Their signature jutsu was the Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals with which they could cross the battlefield with incredible speed using the reflections of the mirrors and surround their enemies from all sides. And this was merely the foundation of that fighting style as they entrap opponents in mirrors of ice, reflect their enemy's attack and allow them to see over great distances as long as an ice mirror was in place. Combined with the dozens of jutsu that exist through the diversity of Ice Release, they were a truly fearsome clans.

The only other ninja known to wield Ice Release - now the most common after the near extinction of the Yuki Clan - are from the Hidden Frost and where their cousins specifically create ice, those from this hidden village specialize in creating snow. Engulfing their surroundings in tons of snow, drawing it together into powerful, freezing cold constructs and unleashing avalanches to bury their enemies.

Known Users

Haku - He is a descendant of the Yuki Clan through his mother’s side who hid her heritage as a civilian. He awakened his kekkei genkai at a very young age which led to a great deal of misfortunate, but he was proven to be a genius with the potential to reach the heights of the shinobi arts had he lived. Haku recreated a number of his clan’s ice jutsu, including their prized Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals merely from hearing about them and could have gone on to devise many more over time.

Chuukichi - He is one of the very few shinobi of the Hidden Mist to possess the Ice Release kekkei genkai and was known as the Snowman for his jutsu and his size. He was far more experienced in the jutsu style than the younger Haku and was considered an elite jounin of the village, highly prized by Terumii Mei for his abilities in his time.

Scorch Release (Official Version)

This is the advanced nature transformation created by combining fire and wind chakra to generate and manipulate heat.

Scorch chakra is able to rapidly increase the temperature to the highest possible limits, far beyond what humans are able to survive and even capable of destroying the environment with its heat. It can be used simply to manipulate the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere or shaping the scorch chakra into focused constructs to attack or defend as needed.

One can wield Scorch Release to vaporize the moisture in the terrain to break it down, melt down metal weaponry into useless slag, set any flammable substances alight, evaporate any sources of water and burn through any enemies caught in their path. Composed of the two chakra natures most suited for offence, this advanced element is undoubtedly the most effective of them all in terms of pure deadliness.

Known Users

Pakura - An elite jounin of the Hidden Sand known as the Heat Wave. She was the village’s strongest wielder of this kekkei genkai and her speciality was Scorch Release: Extremely Steaming Murder which could instantaneously evaporate all of the moisture within a human being to render them a dessicated husk. It was a jutsu that could only be blocked with extreme effort and no normal means of defence, granting Pakura an incredibly high kill count during the war. And as Scorch Release is a highly effective defence against Water Release, she earned a great many enemies among the Hidden Mist which unfortunately led to her death.

Elemental Chakra Mode (Knyght)

Elemental Chakra Mode (Official Version)

The elemental chakra modes are a branch of chakra flow ninjutsu which flow nature transformed chakra directly into the caster’s own body. It doesn't simply focus it into a specific area but makes it circulate throughout their entire chakra pathway system, flowing it through literally their entire body to enhance it with that nature's innate abilities. Once the jutsu is active, it relies on the caster continually creating and transforming their chakra's nature to maintain this state. This can stresses the chakra system as it is forced to circulate a alternate type of chakra to what it normally does which can cause fatigue and pain in the user, a burden which can be eased but never entirely erased through training. It is a testament to the physical durability and chakra levels of the Third and Fourth Raikage that they could maintain their chakra modes for so long without problems.

Each version of the chakra mode is used the same way but they all manifest differently based on which chakra nature has been used which can result in significantly different effects. And these chakra modes aren’t limited to the five basics change in chakra nature as even advanced elements can be used like this.

Lightning Release Chakra Mode - This flows lightning chakra throughout the body to electrically stimulate one’s nervous system to increase their nerve transmission, reaction speed and reflexes. At the same time, their body is wrapped in lightning with a durability like that of armour to provide them protection. Together, it raises the individual’s combat power considerately as they are able to push their body to their physical limits in speed and strength, moving faster than what the naked eye can perceive and reacting to danger with unnatural ease.

This ninjutsu has most infamously been used by the Third and Fourth Raikage, the latter of the two being so skilled at it that he was recognized as the fastest shinobi in the world after the Yellow Flash's death. And the former had actually working on a way to combine this with his Black Lightning which would have taken his Lightning Release Chakra Mode to even greater heights but died before its completion.

Earth Release Chakra Mode - This flows earth chakra throughout the body to harden their skin, muscle and bones to a level of toughness on par with diamonds. It raises their defensive capabilities to the absolute limit that makes them practically invulnerable to harm while the hardness of their body makes any physical attack they unleash far more dangerous to their enemies.

Kakuzu’s Earth Release: Earth Spear works similarly but is short-lived and only affects the skin, though this difference isn’t due to a lack of ability on his part as it was a deliberate choice to prevent his hardening interfering with his kinjutsu’s threads.

Water Release Chakra Mode - This flows water chakra throughout the body to surround them in a layer of water. This can be shaped to aid them in combat such shields to block incoming attacks, lances to pierce through objects and other such shapes. Any water lost is immediately replenished, it doesn’t restrict their movements or breathing and underwater allows one can move as if flying, making them faster than any swimmer.

Fire Release Chakra Mode - This flows fire chakra throughout the body to raise their core temperature to inhuman degrees and literally set themselves aflame. They become wrapped in a layer of flames as fire is constantly produced from their body, increasing the heat around them and allowing them to burn others on contact.

Wind Release Chakra Mode - This flows wind chakra throughout the body to surround them in a field of sharpened air. It shreds anything that makes contact with the winds to cut through enemies and obstacles like a jagged blade, turning them into a human weapon, and is one of the few jutsu that can grant its caster flight by manipulating the air currents around them to generate propulsion.

Genjutsu (Knyght)

Genjutsu

Genjutsu (Illusionary Techniques) is a branch of Yin Release which manipulates the mind of living beings to subject them to illusions. It uses yin chakra to control the chakra flow in the target's cerebral nervous system, allowing the caster to affect their senses, emotions and thoughts. Thus the effects of genjutsu only exist within the mind of the subject, intending to cause confusion or mental/physical exhaustion.

It’s weaknesses are that it doesn’t have any physical effect on the target’s body, making it unable to injure or kill in itself, and prolonged use can be exhausting for the caster.

Illusions that affect the five senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste are the foundation of this jutsu style. Beyond merely affecting the five senses, genjutsu can control the non-traditional senses such as a person's sense of balance, temperature, kinesthesis, pain and time as well as the internal senses that regulate bodily functions.

They can change their target’s perception of reality which manipulates their senses while leaving them conscious of the world around them and as much control over their own body as the illusion allows. Or they can entrap their mind within a false reality which ensnares them in a trance as they experience its illusion. In either case, the caster is always be able to see their own illusions while they affect their victim, allowing them perceive exactly what they are experiencing under its effects.

The illusions that the victim experiences can depend on the imagination of the caster, the thoughts and memories of the victim or the way that the yin chakra has been moulded for the genjutsu. For instance, Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Jutsu reveals the fear that dwells within the victim’s heart and recreates the image before their eyes which usually makes it different for each person. Whereas Demonic Illusion: Tree Binding Death always creates the illusion of a tree that ensnares the victim with the only difference being the type and size of tree.

Standard genjutsu are typically given the name of “Demonic Illusions” much like how standard ninjutsu are called “Ninja Arts”. It stems from the many horrific visions that genjutsu can create of things that aren’t of this world, twisting the mind in ways that other kinds of jutsu simply can’t manage. Because of it, it was considered a “demonic” art and the name stuck ever since, though not every genjutsu follows the same naming pattern.

The next level is to control a person's emotions by inflaming the emotions they are currently feeling, dampening them or inducing artificial emotions in their mind. An illusion which incites an individual’s sense of anger can make them disregard caution and take more reckless actions, potentially making them vulnerable. While this is obviously more difficult to cast and maintain than regular genjutsu, it lacks any kind of visual tells and relies on the victim’s emotional control or chakra sensing to detect its presence.

And finally there is the ability to implant foreign thoughts into a person's mind, the highest level of genjutsu for most shinobi, overwriting their own will and desires with the caster's to control their actions. It overwhelms the target’s mind with the caster’s yin chakra to break their will which make them susceptible to their control, allowing the user to give them orders which they lack the willpower to resist. This is typically used as a means of torture and interrogation to get an enemy ninja to divulge important information. It can also be used to turn people into useful tools as they can implant specific commands for the illusioned to follow like acting as a distraction or attacking someone when in position.

Depending on the severity of the illusion, afterwards the victim can simply fall unconscious and recover after rest or they can be thrown into a coma from the psychological damage.

Target Genjutsu/Area Genjutsu

Every genjutsu can affect either specific individuals or entire areas depending on the user’s intention; the former is known as target genjutsu and the latter are area genjutsu.

Target genjutsu are more focused which makes them harder to dispel but requires line-of-sight to be cast on the individual. Area genjutsu are easier to dispel but affect multiple individuals within the chosen location and can be ‘anchored’ to a specific area, causing anyone who enters it to be affected even if they weren’t present when it was first cast.

Sensory Genjutsu

Sensory genjutsu is performed by transmitting the genjutsu through any of the five senses. Normally, the illusionist would make some kind of gesture to attract the target's eye and make them vulnerable to the genjutsu. However it can also be done physical touching the target and implanting the illusion upon contact, taking advantage of the stimulation of their taste buds when they eat or drink something, carrying the genjutsu with a particular scent for them to smell or projecting the illusion through sound.

The most powerful of them are sound-based genjutsu. This is because transmitting genjutsu through sound allows the caster to affect them from far outside of visual range and to sustain it for as long as the sound is produced. It makes it very difficult for the victim to escape it because the genjutsu would just be reapplied as they continue to hear the sound transmitting it.

Genjutsu Trigger

Normally, genjutsu doesn't need any kind of trigger to be cast on a person as the ninja would just weave the hand-seals and project their chakra at the enemy. But to cast one without using hand-seals, one must first find a way to infiltrate the target's consciousness such as catching their attention by pointing a finger at them.

Genjutsu can be set up so that they only starts affecting the target’s cerebral nervous system once triggered. The nature of the trigger is up to the caster’s discretion. Usually, it works at their command such as when they make a certain hand-seal but it could be set up to activate in response to a spoken word, after a certain amount of time, when they see a specific event or any other kind of trigger.

Genjutsu Layers

These are when multiple genjutsu are cast on the same target. The target can be ensnared by an active illusion while another lays dormant until the the first is broken, causing it to activate in response to the disruption in chakra and tricking them into believing that they are seeing reality when they are actually seeing another illusion. For example, casting the False Surrounding Jutsu twice so that when the first is broken, the surroundings that they think are correct are, again, false.

Or multiple genjutsu can be active in the target at the same time to fool their senses in several ways at once. For example, one illusion can made them see a wall that isn’t actually there while another could conjure the sound of someone chasing them to make them travel in the direction that the caster wants.

Genjutsu Dispel

There are several methods to overcoming genjutsu.

The primary method is for the victim to stop their own chakra flow as much as possible. When trapped in a genjutsu, one’s chakra is under the opponent’s control so breaking that control and disturbing chakra flow is what breaks the genjutsu. The more force one is able to put into stopping their own chakra flow, then the stronger the disruption it causes and more capable they are of breaking powerful genjutsu.

Another method is to experience pain as pain is something which automatically disturbs an individual’s chakra, causing it to disturb the foreign chakra flow within their bodies and break the illusion. However this is an inefficient method as the amount of chakra one needs to suffer depends on the strength of the genjutsu, meaning that it can get to the point where the victim would need to seriously hurt themselves to overcome it and a sufficiently powerful illusion simply cannot be broken by such means.

Otherwise someone else can touch the victim’s body and place their chakra into theirs to disrupt the flow. It is easier for an ally to break a genjutsu than the victim themselves as their foreign chakra inside their pathways is innately more disruptive than their own chakra ever could be. However the obvious disadvantage is that it requires the victim to have an ally nearby to free and for that person to recognize that the victim has been caught in the illusion in the first place, whether by detecting that they are acting out-of-character or detecting the disturbance in their chakra. But even this isn’t a foolproof method against the strongest kinds of genjutsu which may require the chakra of more than one individual.

More unorthodox means of overcoming genjutsu are to train one’s body to automatically detect its presence and reflexively respond in defence against it. Deidara trained his left eye to detect the optical illusion created a genjutsu and break it, a defence that he built to defeat the Sharingan’s Eye of Hypnosis.

Someone captured by a genjutsu can also dilute the effects of an illusion without actually breaking it. They detect the foreign chakra flow inside them and isolate it with their own chakra, allowing them to see the reality of the world around with through the filter of the illusions. It’s a rare skill which lets them see what the caster wants them to see but without being hampered by its effect, fooling the caster into thinking they were in complete control.

Sharingan (Altered Nova)

RE: The Naruversity

So I came up with a theory about how the basic abilities of the Sharingan work. I think it's pretty elegant, as it divides the powers up into six distinct ones, three related to the "eye of insight" and three for the "eye of hypnosis", with two unlocked at each developmental stage.

-----

The Sharingan is a powerful doujutsu belonging to the Uchiha clan. To awaken this doujutsu, one must experience a powerful emotional condition with regards to a person precious to them - this emotion can be positive, driven by a desire to protect or reunite with a loved one, but more often, per the clan's primary occupation as shinobi, it is negative, brought on by stress or loss. When this powerful emotion is first experienced the brain releases a special form of chakra that affects the optic nerves, transforming the eyes into Sharingan; for that reason the Sharingan is described as an "eye that reflects the heart". Unlike the Byakagun, only a relatively small number of Uchiha ever awaken their bloodline.

When first awakened each Sharingan usually will have only one tomoe, although those with particularly powerful chakra may immediately gain two tomoe in one or each of their eyes. Through training and continued use the Sharingan will develop a second tomoe and then, upon full maturation, a third.

As with any doujutsu, Sharingan can be transplanted into non-Uchiha, although they will not be able to deactivate the Sharingan and its use has a greater chakra demand for them than for an Uchiha. For these reasons, non-Uchiha tend to cover their Sharingan when they aren't using it in order to decrease the amount of visual information it needs to process and therefore reduce it's chakra usage as much as possible. Sharingan that originate from the same Uchiha are still linked to some extent even when wielded by separate users, at times enabling those users to see the same things.

The Sharingan has six separate abilities which can be broadly classified into two categories, called the "Eye of Insight" and the "Eye of Hypnotism." The abilities of the Eye of Insight relate to the physical perception of the world around oneself, while the abilities of the Eye of Hypnotism relate to the spiritual ability to perceive and utilize chakra; particularly, yin-based chakra. The powers of the Eye of Insight will always be active as long as the Sharingan itself is active, however, the powers of the Eye of Hypnotism must be consciously accessed by focusing additional chakra to the eyes.

The Sharingan has three stages of development, each of which causes the gaining of another tomoe and the unlocking of two new powers upon being reached.

Stage One (aka one tomoe unlocked): The most basic form of the Sharingan has two fundamental powers.

Clarity of Perception: The first level of the Eye of Insight. The user's brain is able to process vastly more visual information than a normal human. They see everything around them in perfect detail, from the smallest twitch of a person's muscles to individual grains of sand on a beach. The user can see much farther than normal, as well as see much smaller objects in greater detail than normally possible. They are also able to perceive and follow extremely fast moving objects that would appear as just a blur to a normal person.

If pushed to a level beyond the power of most human beings (such as by activating Orochimaru's cursed seal) this perception can extend to the microscopic level and can even mimic the Byakugan by penetrating through solid objects for a very short distance, allowing one to perceive their own body's cells.

Another benefit of this enhanced clarity is the ability to see through almost any non-Sharingan based visual genjutsu. Because the user can see the world in far greater detail and with far greater focus, they will easily detect even the smallest irregularity or flaw in the illusion which a normal person, including the creator of the genjutsu, would overlook. This makes it far easier to dilute the effects of the genjutsu until it's harmless or to outright dispel it. Only someone who has the Sharingan themselves can possibly craft a visual illusion with high enough fidelity to fool another Sharingan user.

Perception of Chakra: The first level of the Eye of Hypnosis. The user is able to see chakra energy as different colors. This allows them to see through most clone jutsu and detect those using chakra to hide or disguise themselves. This perception even penetrates through solid objects for some distance, allowing the user to discover chakra-charged people and objects (such as chakra-molding ninja or ninjutsu-based landmines) hidden underground or behind walls.

This ability also gives the user an incredible defense against any normal kind of genjutsu, including those that aren't visual based, because they can see the chakra "anchor" of any area-based genjutsu as well as the chakra of a targeted genjutsu as it travels to and enters their own body. This foreknowledge ensures that a ninja actively focusing chakra to their Sharingan can almost never be surprised by an illusion, giving them time to fortify their chakra system to resist the incoming genjutsu and to better prepare a counter for it once they are ensnared.

Stage Two (two tomoe unlocked): The previously mentioned two fundamental powers gain new applications.

Mimicry: The second level of the Eye of Insight. The user is now able to instantly memorize any physical movement they witness that is compatible with their body structure. This allows the user to easily learn any type of taijutsu they witness, as well as read another person's lips, or copy another person's writing just by watching and mimicking the movements of their pencil. Any kind of physical skill can be quickly learned in this way, from playing an instrument to operating complicated machinery.

Perception of Chakra Flow: The second level of the Eye of Hypnosis. The user can now not only perceive chakra, but also perceive the way it flows throughout the human body. This allows the user to detect irregularities in the chakra flow of others, such as being under the influence of a genjutsu. This also greatly aids in the learning and mastery of genjutsu, as the user is able to directly see exactly how their genjutsu affects the flow of chakra in the brain of another person.

When used together properly, these two powers can be used to effectively copy and learn any jutsu the user is able to clearly witness being performed. By memorizing another's handseals and watching the flow of chakra throughout their body, the user can gain an incredible understanding of the mechanics of their jutsu. If the user also meets all the requirements of the jutsu (chakra control is up to par, body is strong enough, nature transformation is already known, etc) they may even be able to immediately perform the jutsu themself.

While in theory the user can learn any jutsu this way, in practice it usually only works for basic, lower ranked jutsu. This is because most ninja will eventually reach a level of skill which allows them to "drop" some or even all of the handseals from their favorite jutsu, instead performing the required shape and nature transformations internally through pure willpower. In fact, many higher ranked jutsu have such long and complicated strings of handseals that the ability to perform many of those seals internally is practically required in order to use them in combat. Copying such jutsu is significantly more difficult, as the user must be knowledgeable enough to deduce what handseals were dropped, and where in the sequence they were dropped, simply from observing the chakra flow. Using the Sharingan to copy a complicated A-rank jutsu performed entirely without seals, such as the Rasengan, would be almost as difficult as attempting the learn it the normal way.

Level 3 (three tomoe): The final two abilities of the Sharingan are unlocked.

Prediction: The final level of the Eye of Insight. The Sharingan can now use it's ability to read and copy body language of other people to predict their movements, giving the user an incredible advantage in combat. To the user, this ability is experienced within the mind's eye as a "shadow" of the other person moving a short distance ahead of their real body. To other people, it can seem like a form of precognition (and in fact, the Uchiha clan has long encouraged this misunderstanding of their bloodline as a form of propaganda). While powerful, this prediction is not perfect; if the opponent is able to move their body in ways that are unnatural, or to suppress the normal tells of their body language and move in ways that are highly erratic and seemingly random, then this prediction can be thwarted. This prediction is also less effective the faster the opponent is able to move; the less time the Sharingan has to calculate their movements, the shorter and less accurate its predictions will be. The prediction will similarly be reduced if the opponent hides or otherwise obscures their body language, such as by wearing a mask and thick, loose clothing.

Chakra Projection: The final level of the Eye of Hypnosis. The Sharingan is now able to project a thin stream of yin chakra directly from the user's pupil, which travels along their line of sight. If the user makes direct eye contact with another person this "chakra beam" will pass through their pupil and directly into their brain. This allows the user to subtly manipulate the thoughts and actions of another person by implanting suggestions in their mind which they will believe to be their own ideas (so long as those ideas don't strongly deviate from their normal thoughts and behavior). In combination with the mimicry and prediction powers of the Sharingan the user can even fool another person into believing they can see the future, by suggesting actions and words to the other person and then completing them first and finishing their sentences.

When fully mastered, this power can also be used to project a unique genjutsu (called "Genjutsu: Sharingan") directly into another person's brain, without using handseals or providing any other tell to alert them to it. As the genjutsu travels extremely quickly, bypasses most of the body's normal defenses and usually hits the target completely unexpectedly, the effects can be devastatingly effective to a normal person, and can even be effective against another Sharingan user who would be able to resist any other genjutsu. This genjutsu is also incredibly versatile, taking many forms and serving many purposes: Inducing instantaneous unconsciousness in the target; forceful extraction of any information the target possesses; relaying of memories to the target; removing genjutsu placed on the target by others; suppressing of a tailed beast's chakra within the target; even controlling the target's actions. The Uchiha Clan has even been known to control the Nine-Tailed Kyuubi with this amazing genjutsu.

RE: The Naruversity

I always figured that Deidara trained to strengthen the flow of chakra around his eye, making it harder for sight-based genjutsu to manipulate it. Like a faster-flowing river making it harder to build a dam.

RE: The Naruversity

Makes sense. It probably has side effects though. Maybe the stronger flow of chakra in his left eye prevents genjutsu from modifying the visual information it sends to his brain, but it also messes with his normal vision. (His pupil contracts harshly when he uses his left eye to see through genjutsu... perhaps he can't properly regulate the amount of light that enters his eye anymore?) That would explain why he only trained one eye and why he otherwise keeps the left one closed.

RE: The Naruversity

I had read somewhere that he made his left eye keep moving slightly, making the vision too imprecise for the illusions to take hold.
But can't remember where, I even think it was in the oTFF, so I can't be sure if it is canon...

It's probably worth noting that the first tomoe Sharingan is able to see through genjutsu that's been placed on the Uchiha. And maybe clarifying that some of these abilities aren't constantly on even if the Sharingan is active like perceiving chakra, seeing a person's chakra flow or seeing through clones.

On Deidara, he can apparently see quite well over long distance with his left eye so perhaps his left eye is significantly better than his right after training which throws him off if he keeps both open without his scouter.

The first link is broken there Knight. But yeah, being able to see chakra would make it much easier to see through genjutsu.

Can you recall any particular scenes where someone had the Sharingan active but wasn't able to notice something they should have been able to see though with the Sharingan's powers? I recall that Obito seemed to have to "activate" his ability to see chakra flowing to notice Rin was under a genjutsu, but I thought that just seeing the "color" of chakra was something that was always active.

Perhaps Deidara's left eye can't "unzoom" and he has difficulty seeing things at close range with it? Because if his left eye is just plain better than his right one, then I have to wonder why he didn't train both eyes.

Link's looked okay to me but that should work now. It's Sarada seeing through the flag illusions at the Chuunin Exams in any case.

I was thinking of when Sasuke focused his Sharingan to see through the Haze Clone Jutsu when it was shown to be already activate on several panels prior to that scene. There's what looks like a more subtle one when Sasuke is tracking Kabuto's chakra during the war based on the deliberate visual and sound effects of those panels. And looking back at the fight with Deidara, it seems like Sasuke couldn't immediately see the true nature of C4 after it exploded until he did something with his Sharingan which is presumably when he could see the cloud of bombs going by context.

Perhaps Deidara's left eye can't "unzoom" and he has difficulty seeing things at close range with it? Because if his left eye is just plain better than his right one, then I have to wonder why he didn't train both eyes.
Could be. Only time he seems to use it in the battle when the scouter's gone is when he's watching the entrapped Sasuke after jumping off his owl. Or it could be a pain to use it for long thanks for his training (whether because it's literally painful, stressing or tires him out) so training both would do more harm than good.

Good catches there knight.

Hmmm. I always assumed that the Sharingan automatically sees chakra and tracks movement and whatnot because of Kakashi. He has to cover his Sharingan up to prevent it from constantly draining his chakra. He also had to close his Sharingan eye to prevent himself from accidentally reading Naruto's lips and learning spoilers to the newest Icha Icha book. But it seems like the Sharingan doesn't actually do anything for Sasuke unless he's actively "focusing" it? If that's the case... is the activated Sharingan just cosmetic until Sasuke consciously uses it's powers? If so, why does Kakashi need to cover his Sharingan up? Is Kakashi's sharingan stuck at "full power" and he can't consciously dial it's abilities up or down, while a natural Sharingan user can adjust the chakra flow to their eyes at will?

Also, "SHKEEN", "VWHEEN"... are Sasuke's eyes literally making those hilarious sound effects when he focuses them? Because that would be amazing.

Edit: Edited my Sharingan essay to explicitly state its ability to detect genjutsu and see through visual-based genjutsu, as well as clarifying why the Genjutsu: Sharingan can work on another Sharingan user.

RE: The Naruversity

I think it's specifically the abilities involving the perception of chakra that require deliberate focus, which is the same even for the Byakugan and the Rinnegan. So its extremely enhanced vision and the perks that come with it would still be available by default.

My understanding of Kakashi's problem is that the Sharingan consumes chakra when active (and in a host), presumably because it's always using its insight, so he suffers from constantl chakra drain because he can't switch it off. Moreover, he isn't a Uchiha so his chakra isn't as efficient in sustaining it as theirs and he doesn't have large chakra reserves to begin with. But by keeping his eye closed, he reduces the chakra cost to the absolute minimum because it isn't processing any visual information like putting a computer to sleep without shutting it down.

RE: The Naruversity

So the "Eye of Insight" is always active and draining chakra as long as the Sharingan itself is activated, but the "Eye of Hypnotism" must be consciously activated by focusing additional chakra into the eyes. Alright that makes sense, I'll add it to the essay.

RE: The Naruversity

More like, Insight is always active on a low-setting which can be upped at will. Kakashi is stuck with maximum setting.

RE: The Naruversity

Other Sharingan-related mechanics that come to mind are the types of tomoe i.e. Sasuke's straight tomoe which made his movements more fluid. I intepreted that as the straight tomoe being predisposed to the Eye of Insight and the 'curved tomoe' being predisposed to the Eye of Hypnosis and thus influencing the Uchiha's style.

And there's how Sasuke was able to replicate Lee's taijutsu by remembering the single technique that he had copied with his Sharingan and then visualizing the movements. Which kind of shows you how far the copying ability can be taken since he was able to extrapolate the fundamentals of Lee's style when he only saw a fraction of it.

RE: The Naruversity

Sasuke is also a genius. People tend to forget this and think he got on only with the Sharingan.

I was wondering how much could be attributed to the Sharingan and how much could be attributed to Sasuke himself.
