Mostly Sasuke, I think.

As in, the Sharingan records, but using those records to learn\replicate is up to the user.

Which explains why Kakashi is the Copy-Nin: he is a much greater ninjutsu genius than most Uchiha, so he managed to understand even hard techniques that normal Uchihas couldn't easily copy.

Other Sharingan-related mechanics that come to mind are the types of tomoe i.e. Sasuke's straight tomoe which made his movements more fluid. I interpreted that as the straight tomoe being predisposed to the Eye of Insight and the 'curved tomoe' being predisposed to the Eye of Hypnosis and thus influencing the Uchiha's style.
I'm not sure I can agree with that. If that were true, then straight tomoe would probably be pretty common, right? Every Sharingan would be either a straight or a curved tomoe under that theory. But Madara at least seems to think that the straight tomoe is very special, since Sasuke having the same straight tomoe as him is enough to make him suspect that he and Sasuke are somehow related "beyond just blood." I suspect that Madara may have been referring to Sasuke's Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan by a different name, since he and Madara are the only people who have ever acquired it (excluding Indra, who seems to have been born with it.) His "related beyond just blood" line might also have been referring to them both being Indra's reincarnation.

Yeah, this is what I was going for with my explanation of how the jutsu copying ability works. Being able to read and understand the chakra flowing throughout your opponent's body when they cast a jutsu is more important than copying the handseals. If you aren't knowledgeable enough about ninjutsu and chakra theory to decipher what the chakra flow means, then you will only be able to copy basic ninjutsu being performed with their complete handseal sequence.

Likewise, copying one taijutsu technique with the Sharingan is something any Uchiha could do. Reverse engineering the basic movements of an entire taijutsu styles just from visualising that one move? That takes a genius.

Something I just found. Judging by Kisame's reaction, the Sharingan apparently glows in the dark. Weird.

I got that impression when Sasuke was chilling in the shadows at Orochimaru's hideout. Though this is the only time anyone's commented on it to confirm it isn't just a visual effect for readers.

Stealth must be a pain in the ass with those on.

I wonder if you could wear sunglasses to hide the glow. Do you think that would interfere with the Sharingan's enhanced vision and other abilities?

It's almost always assumed that everything seen with the Sharingan is permanently memorized. Do you think that's true? Or could it only always memorize things specifically related to its abilities like physical movements, hand-seals and chakra flow? Or can Sharingan user choose what they memorize which is usually when a jutsu is being used?

RE: The Naruversity

If you memorized everything seen with the Sharingan then nobody could possibly go around with it activated near constantly like Itachi does. It would drive you nuts.

Edit: Although it likely is easier to recall visual memories acquired when the Sharingan was activated, simply because the user's vision is so much more detailed and vivid. The greater visual fidelity would make a stronger impression on your mind so those memories will stand out more and take longer to forget.

I believe that only physical movements are automatically "recorded", but they are temporary. The memories fade quickly unless you reinforce them by practicing the movements yourself.

Chakra flow is only memorized if you have activated the Sharingan's chakra vision mode.

Special Jounin (Knyght)

A little something to help me get back into the swing of things.

Special Jounin

Special jounin is a ninja rank that exists for ninja who possess jounin-level skill in at least specific area of expertise. Their overal ability is on par with most chuunin and they are qualified to lead other ninja missions but due to either inexperience of inability, they don't possess the elite skill level in all of the shinobi arts to be expected from a jounin which prevents them from attaining the full rank.

Ninja of this rank have the right to participate in missions that a chuunin wouldn't ordinarily be allowed to. Chuunin are meant to do C-rank and B-rank missions but Special Jounin can be sent on A-rank and S-rank missions as well. However they are never meant to lead of these missions and usually only take part in ones that specifically require their skill set.

Unlike Genin, Chuunin and Jounin which have existed for at least as long as the hidden villages themselves, this rank didn't exist until after the First Shinobi World War to help ensure that the correct shinobi are sent on the missions that need them. In terms of authority, they are closer to jounin and chuunin which gives them greater access to their hidden village's resources and information.

Known Special Jounin

Ebisu - Promoted for his theoretical knowledge of ninjutsu, genjutsu and taijutsu which surpasses even most jounin though he lacks the ability to apply himself. He works as an elite tutor to teach ninja of every rank jutsu upon request.

Morino Ibiki - Promoted for his unparalleled knowledge and skill in psychology, torture and interrogation which allows him to extract vital enemy intel both on and off the field.

Mitarashi Anko - Promoted for her advanced skill in genjutsu which, coupled with her higher-than-average stamina for an illusionist, make her second in Konoha only to Yuhi Kurenai and aids her work in infiltration and reconnaisance.

Inuzuka Tsume - Promoted for her tracking skills which are more advanced than anyone else in her clan with the keenest sense of smell and the ability to hunt enemies relentlessly across incredibly distances and all types of terrain.

Namiashi Raidou - Promoted for his expertise in stealth to participate in assassination missions.

Gekko Hayate - Promoted for his mastery of kenjutsu and the Leaf Style which surpasses every other swordsmen in the village in pure skill.

Yamashiro Aoba - Promoted for being the most skilled user of the Psycho Mind Transmission outside of the Yamanaka Clan, making him a valuable asset on intelligence gathering missions.

Man I need to finish that ninja rank article I've been writing on and off for months.

My headcanon is that ranks have as much to do with security clearance as they do with command authority and mission authorization. All "special" ranks have the same security rank as the next higher rank because they are specialists who are needed on more critical missions, but they lack the authority of that rank so they still can't command higher ranked missions.

So special chuunin have the same security clearance as chuunin because they are trusted to work in sensitive jobs such as manning the mission desk, but they lack the skills and competence to command c-rank missions and still must be commanded by an actual chuunin on those missions just like genin do. And special jounin are still considered chuunin when it comes to assigning them missions, but they have the security clearance of jounin so they can work in black ops divisions like the ANBU which chuunin aren't trusted enough to do.

Hanzo of the Salamander (Knyght)

Hanzo of the Salamander (Official Version)

Hanzo was the founder of the Village Hidden in the Rain and universally acknowledged as the strongest shinobi to have existed outside of the Five Great Shinobi Nations.

He was born of the Hattori Clan in the Land of Storms, a country perpetually covered by heavy clouds and suffers from rainfall nearly every day of the year. His clan lacked the military success to stand out as a powerful force in the Warring States Era and had few distinctive skills aside from their proficiency with the kusari-gama. The greatest factor behind their survival was the symbiotic relationship they developed with a powerful salamander.

The salamander was a outcast among its kind for its pitch black skin which reflected toxicity that made it a danger even to its own species. It was discovered near the Hattori Clan's settlement but instead of trying to kill each other they developed a more symbiotic relationship. The ninja provided it food and shelter and, in return, the salamander would provide protection against invaders and even entered a contract to be summoned by the best warriors in battle.

When Hanzo was a child in the early days of the hidden villages, the salamander finally died of old age and left behind only a single offspring, Ibuse. The Hattori feared for their safety with the growing power of the surrounding nations and the loss of the greatest ally, leading Hanzo to step up and request that the black salamander's venom sac to be implanted in his own body so that he could protect the clan in its stead.

Hanzo adapted to the poison from the venom sac rather than succumb to its lethality, staining his eyes black and making his flesh, his blood and even his breath became toxic enough to kill grown men without effort. His resistance to this poison made him practically immune to any kind that might be used against him.

His transplant allowed him to form a powerful bond with Ibuse as it recognized its parent through Hanzo's scent and his resistance to poison stopped the salamander from being a danger to him like it could be to his clansmen. As Hanzo couldn't safely fight alongside his clansmen on the battlefield thanks to his poison, he developed a deadly partnership with Ibuse instead. His poisonous nature and salamander summoned earned him a dangerous reputation as Hanzo of the Salamander.

Aside from Ibuse, Hanzo often operated alone due to how easily he could harm any teammates when made him all the more famous for how successful his missions were and how many enemies he killed. He learned to alter the chemical makeup of the poison to replicate the effects of neurotoxins, hallucinogens, knockout gas and even narcotics. His greatest jutsu increased his toxicity to the greatest heights so he could taint the very land and air around him with his mere presence.

The First Shinobi World War saw the Land of Storms used as a major route between the Great Hidden Villages, meaning it faced regular invasions and suffered lots of damage to its people and its land as the entire country was turned into a battlefield.

To protect his country from further threat, Hanzo gathered the scattered clans of the land to work together under his leadership to repel the warring ninja from their towns and villages and finally build their own hidden village once the war ended. They constructed their new home with metal and stone, building it to stand as tall as possible to endure the never ending rainstorms. Hanzo was chosen to become the chief of the Village Hidden in the Rain without any opposite and was considered as powerful and dangerous as any of the Five Kages.

In the Second Shinobi World War, the opposing hidden villages tried to fight through the Land of Storms once again but found themselves stymied by the Hidden Rain. Led by Hanzo, the rain ninja took advantage of their home advantage to great effect by taking down enemy forces, cutting off supply routes, disrupting intelligence networks and diverting enemies into one another's path. Even as chief of Rain, Hanzo continued to fight on the frontlines and struck fear into anyone caught on the opposite side of his battlefield.

But Hanzo actually had a remarkable reputation for mercy in spite of his deadly skills as those who earned Hanzo's respect through the strength of their arms and convictions were often spared when he defeated. Becausehe believed in bringing peace to the shinobi world, he sought a balance between pragmatism and idealism to stop Ame from being considered weak but also showing compassion rarely seen, especially by one as strong as him, in the hope that it might inspire the same in others.

The man who would become the General of the Land of Iron, Mifune, was one such individual. Hanzo provided him the antidote to his poison after Mifune not only stood firm against when all of his comrades ran away but, on the verge of death, asked that Hanzo would nevertheless let them live. But the most famous example was one of the last battles of the Second Shinobi World War where the Jiraiya, Orochimaru and Tsunade of Konoha fought against Hanzo to reinforce their dying comrades and prevent him from interfering with the rest of their army division to avoid him causing a upset ending in Konoha's loss.

It was the fight they would inevitably lose but the three of them held on and successfully delayed Hanzo enough that he recognized that the battle would end in Konoha's victory. And in acknowledgment of the strength they possessed to survive, Hanzo named them the Sannin of Konoha and asked for their names in exchange for sparing their lives.

But even when the major conflicts of the war came to an end, the Land of Storms still suffered from foreign agents moving through their lands for some time, refugees who travelled their in the hopes that Hanzo of the Salamander could protect them and then the monetary struggles of supporting a hidden village after the war had ended. In the meanwhile, Hanzo worked to unite the Five Great Shinobi Nations in the hopes of creating peace and preventing another war from erupting.

However events spiralled out of control and years later the Third Shinboi World War began. Few dared to trespass on his territory knowing just how dangerous Hanzo was which made the effects of the war less harrowing on the Land of Storm. But fighting in another war despite all of his efforts weakened Hanzo's conviction that peace was possible. As the war progressed and Hanzo fought in battle after battle, he lost sight of that dream of peace in the face of ninja's endless capacity for destruction, greed and betrayal.

This disillusionment made Hanzo seek to simply keep the peace in his own country and turn his back on the rest of the world. He saw himself as the only one capable of protecting the Hidden Rain, causing him to grow more and more tyrannical as he sought more control over his nation.

By the time he learned of Akatsuki who claimed to be a peacekeeping organisation, instead of seeing kindred spirits who shared the same beliefs as he once did, he only saw fools on a futile mission who could potentially threaten his power. The fact that they wore Ame's headband without actually being shinobi under his command made them usurpers in his eyes, instead of people showing respect to him and his village as they intended.

This paranoia led him to seek aid from another force to destroy Akatsuki without weakening his own power. He made a secret alliance with the Danzo of Konoha who would use his personal division of Anbu - Root - to help eradicate organisation in exchange for using the Hidden Rain's best assassins to kill the Third Hokage. Hanzo met with the leader of Akatsuki, Yahiko, with the proposal that they cooperate with one another to help launch peace negotations between Konoha, Iwa and Suna to end the Third Shinobi World War.

In truth, the intended meeting was a trap. Prior to the meeting, Hanzo's men captured one of the founding members of Akatsuki, Konan, and supposed love interest of Yahiko to force him to kill himself in exchange for her life and then use that opportunity to kill the other founders. It was a partial success in that Yahiko died but Hanzo discovered that Nagato possessed the Rinnegan and used its power to kill his and Danzo's men, causing them to retreat before the other two founders could be eliminated.

Hanzo ended the alliance with Danzo after they failed to eliminate Akatsuki's leadership and instead worked on strengthening Ame against potential retaliation. Said retaliation arrived in the form of a civil war as Akatsuki re-emerged after the end of the Third Shinobi World War with a mysterious new leader known only as Pain. He swept up those resentful of Hanzo's regime under his wing and wielded jutsu great enough for his followers to venerate him as a god rather than a man. Already paranoid after years of war, Hanzo desperately sought to preserve his authority by almost entirely closing the Land of Storms' borders and isolating himself in Ame, surrounded by bodyguards at all times and with the strictest security measures to ensure his protection.

None of which was enough to save him. After launching an invasion of rebel forces inside Ame itself to seize control of the village, Pain entered Hanzo's tower alone, slaughtered everyone inside, on the highest floor, found and killed Hanzo by himself. Weakened by the loss of his convictions and focus on self-preservation over self-improvement, Hanzo was nothing compared to how he was in his prime and ultimately suffered a miserable death without even understanding how far he had fallen.

Even his legacy was turned to ash after his death when Pain showed an awe-inspiring mercilessness when he killed everyone Hanzo had every known and cared for down to the last infant, including his parents, wife and children, burned down all of their homes and then cut down who ever had any connection to Hanzo. Everything that Hanzo once had, Pain either destroyed or took for himself until nothing was left.

There were some remnants who still believed in Hanzo after his death and continued to fight in hope of restoring the glory of old Ame but they too died out in the end.

Very nice biography for Hanzou, although I'm disappointed that you didn't explain how he was killed by Nagato. Wasn't it mentioned that it wasn't just a single battle, but rather that Nagato waged a full blown civil war against Hanzou's regime? Not to mention the fact that Nagato slaughtered Hanzou's entire family, all of his friends, and everyone else he ever associated with. All of that seems like it should probably be included.

Also you forgot to mention that time Hanzou battled against the samurai of the Land of Iron and showed mercy to Mifune.

Forgot about Mifune though I'm not sure what to say about that aside from that it happened. What do the samurai even do when ninja wars are taking place?

I do intend to write more about the end of Hanzo's regime, I just got lazy. Though I always been iffy on the timeframe around Hanzo's death and exactly when Pain took over as leader.

Rasengan (Knyght)

The Collector
I stuck to the main versions here as I couldn't be bothered to do the dozens of variations involved.

Rasengan (Official Version)

This is an A-rank ninjutsu and one with the highest possible level of shape transformation.

It releases chakra from the palm of the ninja’s hand which spins wildly in all directions at once and is compressed it into the shape of a sphere. The chakra swirls like a typhoon but stabilized, allowing it to maintain its rotation and power, creating the equivalent of a hurricane in one’s hand.

Once the ninja strikes their enemy, the compressed force of the rotation is released and its destructive power is amplified. It grinds into the target’s body and releases a spiralling shockwave of force into them which moves beyond them to sweep everything in its path and overturns the earth as it throws them back.

The amount of force the Rasengan can unleash depends on the number and speeds of the chakra’s rotation, the quantity of chakra being used and how stable the compression is. The more it spins, the faster it spins and the more chakra release then the greater it becomes in size and destructive power. The less chakra the user possesses and/or the less control they have then the smaller and less powerful their Rasengan would be.

The exact effect that the Rasengan has on its target can be controlled by the caster to a degree. It can expend all of its energies into grinding away at the target instead of exploding, or the rotation can be weakened to avoid internal damage and only throw them back with the force of the explosion. And its effects vary between human and non-human targets as the former receive lethal internal damage but remain intact while the latter is usually blown apart.

Creation and Development

It was invented by the Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato, after he was inspired by witnessing the Tailed Beast Ball during his clashes with Kumo’s A-B Combo and named by his future wife, Uzumaki Kushina. In battle, he analyzed how the jutsu and theorized that he could recreate that process with his own chakra.

It took him three years of experimenting with chakra manipulation to create the Rasengan.

Usually one would develop a jutsu by imagining the desired result, developing theories on what kind of chakra transformation it would require and then experimenting with the possible hand-seal combination to achieve that result. But because the entire jutsu was based on something created by a Tailed Beast who never used hand-seals, he decided it would be best to copy it as accurately with pure chakra control.

For that purpose, he broke the entire process down into three stages achieved through three lessons. The first stage was to release chakra from the hand and make it spin widly, the second stage was to increase the power being used to its limit and the third was to compress the greatest force of the rotation.

The first lesson is to burst the water balloon with chakra by causing the water to spin wildly in multiple directions. The more directions it spins and the greater the speed then the greater the rotation. The second lesson is to use the power of the rotation to burst a rubber ball. This places a great burden is placed on the chakra pathways of the body due to the high level of chakra focused in one region. And the third lesson is to compress the greatest force of the rotation to maintain a stable sphere.

Once Minato had completed the Rasengan it was, at first, merely capable of sending an enemy flying with its power. But after six months of continual practice he was able to get his Rasengan to the peak of its destructive potential which could kill most human opponents, tearing apart their insides and blasting them away.

Adding Nature Transformation

The Rasengan itself was only ever half finished.

From the very beginning, Minato had intended to combine the jutsu with nature transformation. By adding nature transformation to the pinnacle of shape transformation, he meant to create one of the most advanced and powerful ninjutsu possible.

But adding nature transformation to the Rasengan is a feat which requires a level of focus and control that would take years of devoted effort to achieve even after mastering nature transformation and the Rasengan itself.

Minato died before he could see its completion and no-one he taught the Rasengan to was able to accomplish it when they tried either. It wasn’t until his son, Uzumaki Naruto, tried to follow in their footsteps that the Rasengan was finally completed.

Naruto's solution was to use a shadow clone to add his wind nature chakra to the Rasengan, dividing the chakra creation, shape transformation and nature transformation between three people to reduce the amount of effort and concentration each one needs. And even with the aid of an additional shadow clone, more training was needed to be able to use the maximum amount of elemental chakra, maintain the elemental Rasengan and prevent it from causing any backlash from its immense power. At first Naruto could only accomplish this with senjutsu chakra and then the Nine-Tails' chakra but he eventually reached the point where he could do this without even the aid of shadow clones.

Wind Release - Combining the Rasengan with wind natured chakra creates a swirling orb of chakra surrounded by four blades of wind like a shuriken. When unleashed on the target, it releases countless wind blades to tear apart their body and pulverizes everything else caught in its range of effect. The surrounding wind blades are able to cut through any obstacles and the jutsu can be made to explode even without hitting anything.

Lightning Release - Combining the Rasengan with lightning natured chakra creates a compressed mass of electricity. When it strikes the target, it unleashes a huge electrical discharge which burns out their entire nervous system until they are unable to function. At the same time it releases a storm of lightning that paralyzes anyone caught in its reach.

Fire Release - Combining the Rasengan with fire natured chakra creates a swirling orb of burning chakra. It burns the target's body until they are nothing more than charred flesh and ash while scorching their surroundings in a firestorm.

Earth Release - Combining the Rasengan with earth natured chakra creates a solid mass of rock hard chakra. It petrifies the target's body and shakes like an earthquake, shattering their body into dust and tearing apart the surrounding land.

Water Release - Combining the Rasengan with water natured chakra creates an orb on compressed, swirling water currents. This water explodes out in a destructive tide that sweeps everything away under a crushing lake.

I disagree with the attempt at making a rasengan for every element. Imho it sounds very video/card gamey. (It was a problem I had with your elemental armor jutsus too.)

Rasengan is pretty much made to have wind chakra in it: it's a swirling mass of chakra that looks like wind currents, it's about grinding shit and then exploding in some sort of spherical torando. It's pretty much a futon jutsu wthout wind chakra in it.

Also it was made by Minato, who himself had a wind affinity and made it with shape+his element in mind. And we know that the rotation wasn't in the original bijuudama, so it makes sense to me that he created the rasengan with the thought that it would be wind that would be added to it and didn't make it a jutsu that could be adapted to every element.

RE: The Naruversity

Jeopardizer is right that the Rasengan is uniquely suited to being improved with wind chakra though. It really is basically a wind jutsu done without using wind chakra, faking the properties of wind chakra through ridiculously complicated shape manipulation and brute force.

Adding actual wind chakra to the Rasengan makes sense because it improves the jutsu without fundamentally changing it's properties. The Wind Release: Rasengan just spins faster and has smaller, sharper blades. But adding fire or lightning chakra either turns it into an entirely different jutsu that just looks like the Rasengan, or a normal Rasengan with an unrelated secondary effect (it grinds into you and also burns/shocks you!) ...Although to be fair, Magnet Release Rasengan works exactly like that (it grinds into you and binds your movements with curse seal markings!) so I guess it isn't unprecedented.

I'm not convinced that it's even possible to combine the Rasengan with earth and water chakra though. Earth Release jutsu generally involve either terrakinesis or the manipulation of hardness/weight, neither of which seems particularly compatible with a small swirling sphere of sharp chakra. And Water Release is mostly just hydrokinesis (although the user can manipulate its viscosity) and it's most notable trait is that it's the most versatile element because it's the most compatible with shape manipulation...

...Actually, "most compatible with shape manipulation" might have some potential, considering that the Rasengan is shape manipulation pushed to the max. Perhaps a Water Release Rasengan could attain more stable compression than a normal Rasengan? So you could force way more chakra into a Water Release Rasengan than a non-elemental one of the same size, or you could shrink it much smaller without losing any power. So while a Wind Release Rasengan is sharper/faster and therefore has greater "cutting" power, a Water Release Rasengan has higher compression and therefore greater "explosive" power.
