Byakugan (Official Version)

The Byakugan - White Eye - is the kekkei genkai of Hyuuga Clan that has been passed down among their clan for a thousand years. It was inherited from their ancestor, Otsutsuki Hamura, who was born with the power due to his mother consuming the Divine Fruit.

Everyone in this bloodline possesses white irises and pupils and they are able to awaken the Byakugan as soon as they have the chakra and control to activate it. Whenever the Byakugan is activated, the veins around the eyes bulges outward due to the amount of chakra being focused into them. Because actually activating the eyes is quite difficult, the Hyuuga developed a hand-seal sequence to channel their chakra in the correct way which is taught to all of their children. Experience and skill allows them to skip this step by activating them without aid but even experienced Hyuuga may used a simple chakra-focusing hand seal to make it easier.

When active, the eyes gain a supernatural acuity that allows them to see the world with incredible clarity. Everything becomes that much sharper, distances are easier to perceive, colour is more pronounced and their minds can process everything they see at a faster rate than normal. They can even see in low light conditions as clear as in day and can adapt to the most intense levels of light as well. This perceptiveness makes it an ideal tool for analyzing a person’s mental state through physical cues and using that knowledge against them as a weapon.

Among the abilities that the Byakugan has, the one it shares with all other doujutsu is its ability to see chakra as a part of the visible spectrum. Ordinary eyes are only able to see chakra when concentrated to the highest levels but the Byakugan can see it in even the faintest quantities. It perceives chakra as different colours which are unique to each individual, reveals thing hidden by chakra to their naked eye, shows disturbances in a person’s chakra flow such as when influenced by genjutsu and seeing that which composes the jutsu used against.

The Byakugan possesses panoramic vision which allows the Hyuuga to see in almost a full 360° degrees so that they can view practically everything around them. By doing so they are able to anticipate attacks from anywhere around them, including directly above them, with greater awareness than those who would rely on their other senses to compensate. However it does have a blind spot where attacks are able reach the Hyuuga without them ever knowing.

They are capable of telescopic vision which can see over dozens of meters from their earliest activation and which can be trained to extend this up to tens of thousands of meters. Such range means that they can spot enemies and track their movements with them none the wiser.

And lastly they possess x-ray vision which allows them to see through physical objects as if they were not there to view whatever may exists beyond them. This ability in particular makes hiding from the Byakugan so difficult as it can see through solid walls, smoke, dust, clothing or even through a person's flesh to see their bones or internal organs. The ability to see through the ground is particularly useful for scoping out enemies moving underground but difficult to maintain given the sheer disorientation in not being able to see the ground.

Individually, these are all incredibly useful abilities but they are even more powerful when used together.

The Hyuuga combine their x-ray vision with their ability to see chakra, allowing them to see the chakra pathways within the human body. This served as the foundation of their Gentle Fist as they inject their chakra into the enemy’s pathways that are entwined with their internal organs to damage them in ways they can’t defend against. Those with higher than average visual acuity, naturally or trained, can even see the 361 chakra points which release chakra from the body which can then be targeted to disrupt the enemy’s chakra flow. Viewing the chakra pathways directly means that they can literally see the enemy generate chakra, transform it into a jutsu and channel it through their body, allowing them to react to an attack before it is actually unleashed.

It is even one of the reasons why the Hyuuga are so gifted with chakra control as where other people can only rely on how their chakra feels as they manipulate it, those with the Byakugan can actually see the chakra they are using. With this knowledge, they can more easily adjust their chakra levels when applying it to exercises or jutsu to use exactly as much as they need.

And they combine their panoramic vision with their telescopic vision to see as far as possible in 360 degrees so that they can perceive everything happening in that territory and defend themselves against it. It is perfect for fighting against multiple enemies at different ranges as they are able to keep track of any attack against them where other ninja would be overwhelmed. However using multiple types of vision can limit their maximum ability such as when trying to extend their visual range while looking in 360 degrees at the same time; they cannot see nearly as far as they would by just focusing on their telescopic vision.

Different Hyuuga have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to their Byakugan just as regular people do not have always equal eyesight. Hyuuga Hinata's is particularly proficient in its telescopic vision which could see roughly a kilometre away when she was rookie genin which increased to seeing at least ten kilometres and then twenty kilometres as she grew. Her cousin Neji was never able to match her maximum range even being older and more experienced than her, yet his eyes were naturally better at seeing minor details at close range which is why he could see the chakra points of the body at such a young age which was combined with his prodigal talent for the Gentle Fist.

Overusing the Byakugan by maintaining its active state for hours on end, especially while pushing its eyesight to the limit, can strain the eyes to the extent that they temporarily lose their vision.

You know considering what the Byakugan can do, isn't it kind of weird that the Hyuuga focus almost exclusively on taijutsu? Logically they should easily be able to easily master many combat styles with their superior perception. Imagine a Hyuuga who uses their ability to observe the inside of the human body and to target the chakra coils and tenketsu to supplement medical ninjutsu. Or a Hyuuga who masters the bow and becomes the ultimate sniper. Or a Hyuuga who masters the silent killing technique to silently murder enemies who are blinded by smoke or fog or darkness. Or a Hyuuga that ambushes the enemy by hiding underground and attacking them from complete safety with earth ninjutsu.

The Hyuuga would be absolutely terrifying with ranged weapons or in any situation where the opponent's field of view can be limited but theirs cannot. With their extraordinary chakra control and the ability to learn new ninjutsu almost as easily as the Uchiha by observing the chakra coils, they really should be masters of every ninja ninja art on the same level as the Senju.

ranged weapons are kind of shitty in Naruto.

Jutsu are much more effective.

Why exactly are 'ranged weapons' and 'jutsu' distinct, separate categories in your mind? Kidoumaru's bow was technically a jutsu since he created it on the fly from his spider silk and that thing was badass. The Hyuuga could have a whole group of elite trick-shot archers like him armed with chakra-infused arrows that destroy the chakra pathways of their victims.

Really, ranged weapons being kind of shitty in Naruto is entirely due to the failure of the author's imagination. In a world where fuuinjutsu and chakra metal exist there is no good reason why ranged weapons can't be badass. For example, why couldn't someone infuse their shuriken with genjutsu to make them almost impossible to predict and avoid, or inscribe their kunai with time-space ninjutsu formula so that they teleport right to the target? Imagine a Hyuuga with a trebuchet and a pile of those exploding mines that Tenten attacked Kisame's clone with - they'd be a human artillery unit, able to rain destruction down on the enemy from kilometers away. Hell, with just basic fuuinjutsu seals they could easily build weapons that rival modern firearms - imagine a repeating crossbow that auto-reloads from a storage seal containing hundreds of bolts marked with exploding tags. That is easily within their technology level.

Shuriken infused with Genjutsu? Or maybe Yin Release Chakra Flow? :hmm: The latter is one of the ideas I've written down on my computer, but not used anywhere.

If a trench knife infused with Shikamaru's shadow jutsu works then I see no reason why genjutsu wouldn't work as well. Both are yin release.

Also, random thought. Why the hell didn't Asuma use chakra metal shuriken in addition to the trench knifes? The one time he threw his wind chakra infused trench knife as a demonstration to Naruto it punched through a tree and shattered a boulder. Imagine if he had a couple of those gigantic fuuma shuriken filled with the same wind chakra.

I'm saying it because genjutsu usually needs hand-seals.

Shikamaru's Shadow jutsu need one or none in Part2, and Chakra Flow is usually used without hand-seals.

Ranged Weapon=Doesn't use Chakra
Jutsu=uses Chakra.

Now you're just being intentionally dense anko. My point was obviously that something can be both a ranged weapon and a jutsu. Yeah, most of the ranged weapons we see in Naruto are kind of shitty but that's only because nobody ever uses fuuinjutsu, ninjutsu and chakra flow to improve them for no good reason. We see people improve their melee weapons with chakra all the time in all kinds of creative ways, so why the hell are explosive tags apparently the only interesting thing anyone (besides Kidoumaru) ever does with ranged weapons?

RE: The Naruversity

because, I'm going to guess, it's more chakra-efficient use "normal" jutsu.
I bet chakra infused into weapons dissipates quite fast, making it useless for longer-ranged weaponry.

Hell, Kidomaru himself wasn't really far from Neji.

It could also be incredibly difficult to produce or create more intricate long ranged weapons that have a greater effect over jutsus.

Yeah, going through this made it explicitly clear just how versatile the Byakugan really is. The Sharingan even feels a little lacking in comparison when you exclude its evolutions and kinjutsu though I might change my tune if I go through the same evidence gathering that I did here.

As to the rest, my headcanon is that's the kind of thing the Hyuuga background character actually do get up. It's just that the Gentle Fist is something that literally all of them learn - even if only a minority get the really cool tricks - and makes any one of them dangerous in close quarters so it's the main thing that comes up. The only guys we really get to see in action is the head of the Main House, the heiress and the cousin who copies the Main House with his crazy talent. Aside from when a few of them assisted with the Vacuum Wall Palm, the other Hyuuga are only ever shown looking at stuff with their Byakugan rather than fighting.

Because I'm a masochist I decided to go manga trawling for all of the Sharingan. Even excluding the Mangekyo Sharingan (and not for lack of trying), this thing is ridiculous and I got lazy. God knows why I thought this would be a good idea when I don't actually intend to write a Sharingan article anyway.

Sharingan (Research Notes) (Version 2)

Bear in mind that some of these notes are just speaking in generalities since I can't be bothered to fine tune them for accuracy.

Yeah I feel like most of the genjutsu stuff probably isn't unique to the Sharingan, rather the Sharingan just makes them much easier to pull off because it can skip handseals and cast them by line-of-sight.

knight, did you find anything about the Sharingan that contradicts the Sharingan theory I wrote a while back?

RE: The Naruversity

Actually, I suspect Sharingan itself doesn't cast Genjutsu more than any other Eye, but the Hypnotic power makes them super-effective.

Basically the Hypnosys reduces the target's Genjutsu defenses enough for an eye-bases Genjutsu unrelated to Sharingan to take effect- Fourth Raikage doesn't appear to have much of an opinion on Sharingan-based Genjutsu, too.

I literally just threw together everything we saw the Sharingan do in regards to genjutsu.

The Sharingan can reflect genjutsu back at the caster.
You sure it's a Sharingan ability and not just a Genjutsu ability?
The manga imples it's not but the databook seems to be saying it requires the Sharingan.

Demonic Illusion: Mirror Heaven and Earth Change (Magen: Kyou Tenchi-ten)

Kekkei Genkai, Genjutsu, Supplementary, Close range

User: Uchiha Itachi

The mechanics of a false image is duplicated by these eyes, its effects largely turned back onto the enemy!!

One decrypts a genjutsu that has been applied onto them, and casts back a jutsu with identical effects onto the opponent!! It's a form of illusion reversal, but in order to instantly read through a jutsu and cast it in return, the Sharingan's power is necessary. As genjutsu is initially used to confuse the enemy, this technique which sends it right back to its caster deals a high amount of mental damage, more than anything else. Every half-baked genjutsu will fall prey to the mirror that is Sharingan!!

Conditions such as the presence or not of a Kekkei Genkai and the relative strength of both casters play a great part when operating this jutsu.

Thanks to the Sharingan's power, Itachi uses a similar technique.

RE: The Naruversity

I suspect that if a lesser user of the Sharingan and Genjutsu (as in, anyone not Itachi, Madara or endgame Sasuke) tried that on Kurenai, they would have received a nasty surprise.

Basically, Genjutsu Reversal is a "normal" technique, but that an instantaneous implementation can be used only with a Sharingan.

RE: The Naruversity

How would normal "illusion reversal" work then? Is it something that normally takes a few minutes at least to pull off, so without a Sharingan it's of limited use in battle but it could be very helpful if you find yourself being mentally interrogated by an enemy?

One decrypts a genjutsu that has been applied onto them
Wait, "decrypt a genjutsu?" What an interesting choice of words. Does this mean that performing a genjutsu requires "encrypting" your chakra in some way? What exactly would that entail?

RE: The Naruversity

Normal Genjutsu reversal takes a varying amount of time, as one needs to realize they are in a genjutsu, the kind of genjutsu, how it works and reverse tables on the caster.
Most genjutsu seems to be meant to last quite a time being mostly misdirection\distractions, so it's not necessarily a problem taking a little to do the work, while letting the caster think you are ensnared.

The Sharingan analitic proprierties makes it much faster, retro-engineering the technique on the spot(depending on the ability of the owner, obviously)

RE: The Naruversity

Checked the Sharingan article. Only two things bugged me:

although those with particularly powerful chakra may immediately gain two tomoe in one or each of their eyes
Saying it's caused by particularly powerful chakra seems strange when Madara and Sasuke technically only awakened the Sharingan with one tomoe while Obito was relatively mundane at that stage of his life.

This allows the user to subtly manipulate the thoughts and actions of another person by implanting suggestions in their mind which they will believe to be their own ideas (so long as those ideas don't strongly deviate from their normal thoughts and behavior).
This description sounds a bit too much like Kotoamatsukami though I assume you're basing it on what Kakashi did the Zabuza. I think that was more like him making Zabuza see an image that made him slip up further in his distracted state rather than a direct manipulation of thought.

To use a rather terrible analogy: if Kotoamatsukami makes someone jump back by convincing them that they want to jump back because it sounds like such a jolly good idea, Kakashi did the equivalent of pretending to punch them in the face to get them to jump back.

Obito was much older and more experienced when he awoke his Sharingan.

Obito was much older and more experienced when he awoke his Sharingan.
Which means it isn't really a case of Obito having particular powerful chakra in general, just in comparison to much younger children. Which could be better phrased simply by saving that late bloomers like Obito are more likely to awaken the Sharingan with two tomoe since they're more mature.
