Eh, I don't quite agree. I honestly think Animal Path just can summon using the chakra rods instead a summoning path.
While I agree that this is the most likely, most canonical answer, it's arguably less convenient than just using a summoning contract. Rinnegan jutsu are supposed to be badass and "summon anything with a black chakra rod piercing it's body" is pretty underwhelming as one of the Paths of the Sage of Six Paths. So I approve of Knight's reinterpretation of the power.

Next up is the Naraka Path but I don't really get how that works.

Naraka Path (Research Notes) (Version 1)
It's two abilities don't seem to have anything to do with each other, souls look completely different from how they normally do and the interrogation ability is prettty useless when it's just murders the liar without actually providing any info. :hmm:

The King of Hell is even weirder. It can actually be summoned by two different Paths; the Naraka Path for the above mentioned uses, and the Outer Path for resurrecting the dead.

Also the summon being invisible to everyone except those being grabbed by Naraka Path is apparently only true when it's being used for judging liars. Naruto could see it and asked Fukasaku about it when Naraka Path revived Preta Path during their fight, and Itachi could see it to attack it's eyes when zombie Nagato summoned it to store Naruto's soul which he was extracting with Human Path.

Also are we sure the Naraka Path extracts the soul? I thought it was just ripping out their lifeforce. Otherwise you'd think Naraka Path could just store the known liar's soul and body in the King of Hell and revive them later for Human Path to interrogate, since Kabuto says that's a thing it can apparently do.

Put it in this way: a Rinnegan User can summon ANYBODY AND ANYTHING that is linked to their chakra. No contract necessary.

Every Path is a one-trick pony... but it's extremely good at its one trick. And this is basically the ultimate summoning system.

For Naraka path:

I suspect King of Hell usually resides in a different dimension like either Nue or Madara's Limbo clones-

By touching the target, they are put "in synch" with it and can see it.

King of Hell seems to have two main abilities: physical reconstruction and "soul management". Kabuto intended to rip Naruto's soul with Human Path, conserve it and the body in king of Hell and later resurrect them.

I'm going to guess then King of Hell+"honesty"(or dead body\soul, which cannot lie)=body resurrected and restored with the soul given.
King of Hell+Lie=soul and body separated.

Restoring soul-less bodies like the Pain paths is probably a side-effect.

It's confirmed to be a soul rather than life force (which I totally could have worked with) in the fourth databook: "The soul of the living is pulled out in-order to be eaten, this hijutsu calls out the ruler of hades. To lay down life's burden unconditionally the soul is eaten. The power is drawn out the instant the jutsu users touches someone, resistance is impossible. Once grasped the person can only await death. Directed towards judging the authenticity of the answer to the question, the gift of a tranquil death awaits a person who states falsehoods."

I get the impression that Naraka is divided into a spiritual half which affects soul and can't be seen by anyone but the victim and a physical half which affects the body and can be seen anyone.

Now I think about it... wasn't the Shinigami invisible to those not the targets?

I think so. Orochimaru was under its effects for a while before he actually reacted to the God of Death and I'm not sure 100% sure it's because he only just saw it or if he was just reacting to Hiruzen telling him what it was just before it started chowing down on some souls.

Let's get this out of the way. Also threw in a new ability for the Naraka Path (truth/lie version) for shits and giggles. Tell me if it doesn't work.

Naraka Path

The Naraka Path has the ability to control a being known as the King of Hell. It exists only through the power of the Rinnegan and manifest as a spiritual being or as a physical being depending on how its ability is to be used.

When the wielder holds their target, they can summon the King of Hell as a spirit which can only be seen by the intended victim. Once held like this, their spirit becomes captive to the King's authority and are forced to face its judgment which decides whether they live or die.

This judgment is based on truth and lies. When the wielder asks a question, the victim is compelled to answer but have a choice over whether they lie or tell the truth. Once answered, their soul is transformed and dragged from their body out of their mouths to be grabbed the King. If they lied, it consumes their soul which kills the victim. If they told the truth, their soul is returned and their life is spared (though they are left exhausted).

The wielder can also command their victim to perform a task for them and, again, compels them to answer. If they refuse or only pretend to agree then they are killed. If they agree then they are spared but at the same time the King of Hell lays a compulsion upon them that forces them to perform to task regardless of their own will. Should they try to disobey, their soul is immediately consumed by the King regardless of where they are.

The Naraka Path can also summon the King of Hell as a physical being that can be seen and touched by anyone. As such, its power is over the body rather than the soul.

In its physical form, the King can restore anyone that has been injured back to its original form. It surpasses practically any medical ninjutsu as it can heal minor and major wounds within seconds including lost body parts. Even damaged clothing and equipment on their person are returned to their original state as if they had never been harmed in the first place. It is limited in that it can only be used on one subject at a time and the more damage it needs to fix then the more chakra is required.

It can also act as a vessel for storing soul and bodies indefinitely. If one who uses the Rinnegan removes someone's soul, they can immediately store both inside without the soul departing for the Pure Lands or the body experiencing any kind of decay. Then body and soul can be reunited once more and revive the individual in question. This is the only way to bring someone back to the life with Naraka Path but the King of Hell can be used in other ways...

I really like the idea of the King of Hell being able to compel people to obey your commands, but they can escape it by consciously choosing death instead. It's a logical extension of the "truth or die" mechanic (actually they are both really the same mechanic since "tell me the truth" is just a specific kind of command) and it makes sense that it never logically came up in canon since Nagato only ever needed information on Naruto's location, he never had a need to compel people to do things for him besides tell him the truth.

Sweet. In which case I shall move onto greener pastures...

Deva Path

The Deva Path has the ability to manipulate gravity, one of the fundamental forces of creation, to repel and attract anything.

Shinra Tensei generates repulsive force. It unleashes an invisible wave of gravitational force that pushes away anything and everything from the wielder. The range of the repulsion is under their control so they can choose to unleash it in one or more directions or even every direction at once. The size and number of targets is irrelevant as they will suffer the effects equally regardless.

Living beings can be sent flying away with incredible speed and can potentially accumulate additional damage if they are thrown into the ground or though solid obstacles. Structures of wood, stone or metal can be demolished in an instant as no physical structure is capable of standing up to this jutsu. And any ninjutsu, regardless of how powerful or complex, is torn apart in the face of this power which makes it an ideal defence. Even if the effects of a jutsu clings to the wielder's body to harm and restrain them, they are easily repelled with this ability.

When Shinra Tensei is pushed to its absolute limit, it is capable of unleashing enough destructive force that it can turn a city of several kilometers into a wasteland of broken rubble and shattered bodies.

Bansho Ten'nin generates attractive force. This invisible wave of gravitational force can drag anything towards the wielder.

The ability is ideal for drawing in an enemy against their will, struggling to defend against the irresistible pull that can leave them vulnerable against the follow-up attack. The pull does not even need to be towards the wielder themselves. Instead they can select a target that another object is drawn towards to send them on a collision course, crushing them against one another.

The attractive force is capable of drawing down celestial rocks from orbit which can fall from the sky at incredibly speeds to crush anything at the impact site. When Bansho Ten'in is pushed to its absolute limit, it is capable of calling down meteors that are hundreds of meters in size that would destroy anything caught beneath it once it lands.

Each use of the Deva Path requires a recharge of at least five seconds which prevents them from casting either jutsu within that time period. The more power applied to the jutsu then the longer it takes for the Deva Path to recharge, potentially lasting for several minutes when used to the highest level.

The last and greatest of the Deva Path's abilities is the Chibaku Tensei. By clasping their hands together, they can create a gravity core which they release into the sky above their target. The core attracts the surrounding matter with an irresistible pull, dragging up the earth, water and trees and compressing them into a floating heavenly body. Any living being caught in its range is buried alive within that miniature planet, entrapping them within the sealing stone to prevent the escape of almost anything.

And they are not limited to creating only one of these sealing stones, provided they possess the necessary chakra. Tearing apart the land to form these miniature planets and dropping them from the sky is a threat even armies would likely fail against.

But the price of using Chibaku Tensei - or Shinra Tensei and Bansho Ten'nin at their highest level - is that each use of its power costs the wielder some of their remaining lifespan.

I skipped over Sasuke's Chibaku Tensei since I'm not sure how he pulled that off. Did he figure out another way to do it from his experience with Six Paths Chibaku Tensei? Or casting genjutsu on the Tailed Beasts make them vulnerable to becoming a gravity core? And yeah, I made Madara's "Tengai Shinsei" just superpowered version of Bansho Ten'nin with his use of hand-seals was just being to focus his chakra to call down two meteors at once.

Sasuke's Chibaku Tensei was bullshit. I can only assume he copied the jutsu by watching Madara perform it with his Sharingan in chapter 676, but the fact that his first time ever using the jutsu he performed it to a higher level than anyone else ever could and without even using the signature spherical black "gravity cores"... it was bullshit.

I still find it bizarre how easy it is to summon huge meteors with Bansho Ten'nin. Because unless the jutsu is invisibly utilizing time-space shenanigans or is somehow creating the meteors from nothing, then this would imply that Naruto's world has a planetary ring system to pull them from.

Perhaps Hagoromo's training with Chibaku Tensei got out of hand back in the day and he ended up chucking his floating rocks into orbit. And maybe Hamura with the Tenseigan since it's apparently capable of moving the moon around.

about Elemental Hand-signs

In the BORUTO movie hand-signs, different from the 12 standard hand-signs, are used to tell the Ninjutsu Shooter what kind of technique to select.

Left-to-right:
Fire, Water, Wind, Earth
Lightning, "launch"

in the latest manga chapter(#14), Boruto uses the Lightning hand-sign when using the [Ikazuchi] - Sanren technique

It is to note it's a singe-hand hand-sign... does that means they are single-hand elemental hand-signs?

We know there are elemental seals and one-handed seals, so I suppose it's not exactly weird to propose there exist seals that are both elemental and one-handed.

My bigger question, upon closer inspection of that manga panel - how the hell did Boruto throw those shuriken? He's not actually gripping them. They're just kind of resting against his closed middle and ring fingers.

I would also like to humorously suggest that Boruto must be a fan of heavy metal music and/or spiderman for using that handseal.

I've been meaning to do one for the Kote...and hand-seals...sigh.

Not sure if I should try and do the Outer Path or skip right over them to the Six Paths of Pain because I really don't get what the Outer Path is meant to do. It lets you bring back the dead, see through copies of your own eyes, probably lets you summon souls from the Pure Lands and create chakra chains for binding tailed beasts.

Random as all hell. :hmm:

The Mangekyo Sharingan isn't any less random. The Outer Path is simply the abilities that can only be used by the original.

The other Paths are relatively clear-cut in what they do: manipulate gravity, summon animals, cyborg transformation etc. The Outer Path's abilities seem too disconnected from each other so I can't really the basic idea is meant to be.

Maybe it has abilities from each Path that are too powerful to be used by puppets/clones?

That kind of makes sense. Reviving the dead could be reasonably classified as a supercharged Naraka Path jutsu (both use the King of Hell as a medium), creating black chakra rods could be Asura Path since they are sometimes used as weapons in addition to being used as chakra transmitters, summoning the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path could be Animal Path, the ability to control the actions of those bound by the chakra rods and/or chains could be an extension of Human Path's soul manipulation... I'm not sure how chakra chains or linked vision could be merged with either Deva or Preta Paths though. So I guess that theory isn't perfect.

If the chains can absorb Chakra, then we've got the Preta Path there, too. As for the shared vision, that might be the Rinnegan's most basic ability, so... I dunno? :p

Chakra-transmitted vision through the Chakra Rods?
Maybe. Then the Deva Path equivalent is... Space-Time jutsu like Amenotejikara? Or is that about the Animal Path - or maybe exists only in the Rinne Sharingan and Sasuke's Rinnegan (which is effectively the same).

No, Sasuke's Rinnegan is described as a Rinnegan, not a RinneSharingan.

That said, aren't you treating the Paths as "abilities different from the main body"?

Sasuke's Rinnegan is described as a Rinnegan, but it looks like an incomplete Rinne Sharingan (only six tomoe instead of nine, but no other Rinnegan user has ever had any tomoe in their eyes at all) and it acts as a Rinne Sharingan because he can use the powers of both dojutsu without needing to switch back and forth between them like Madara did. So in my headcanon it is an incomplete Rinne Sharingan.
