maybe because it's basically a one-hand hand-seal that is ALSO from where the genjutsu comes?

Not quite sure what you mean there...

He used both hands for the hand-seal btw. Unless you mean the pointing?

You raise good points Knight. I think your ideas on escaping genjutsu through pain are probably more true than mine. I will think on this further.

Itachi normally releases genjutsu through his eyes. I assume this is something unique to the Sharingan, aka the infamous Genjutsu: Sharingan technique which traps the victim in an illusion if they make direct eye contact with the user. My headcanon is that the mechanism behind this jutsu is that the user is basically firing a beam of yin chakra out from their pupils, and if it enters into the victim's eyes it has a direct path to their brain through the optic nerves that bypasses all of their normal defenses. This is why sharingan genjutsu are so powerful, fast-acting and difficult to resist compared to normal genjutsu.

For most normal genjutsu, I imagine the process is more like pushing out a cloud of yin chakra through the tenketsu in the arms and hands. That cloud settles on the victim's body, seeps into their chakra system and then makes it's way to their brain. This process is not instantaneous and the body naturally attempts to fight it - which is why some ninja who were affected by Kabuto's sleeping genjutsu were able to notice what was happening to them and dispel it before the symptoms kicked in, and also why Kurenai's genjutsu took several pages to kick in and Asuma impatiently asked her what was taking so long as he fended off Kisame.

I think Itachi's finger genjutsu is special because he was essentially imitating the Sharingan. Rather than emitting the genjutsu through tenketsu in both arms and hands as is typical, he instead fired the chakra out of his fingertip as a thin beam. When Naruto looked at Itachi's finger, that chakra entered his brain through the optic nerves just like the Genjutsu: Sharingan does. That's why Naruto thought that fighting Itachi is like fighting two people at once, because (at least concerning genjutsu) his finger was effectively as dangerous as a second pair of Sharingan would be.

Of course, those "sharingan style" genjutsu do have a drawback. Normal genjutsu are weaker, slower and easier to resist and/or escape, but the victim also doesn't have to unintentionally cooperate to become trapped in them. But with the Genjutsu: Sharingan and Itachi's finger genjutsu the "chakra beam" must directly enter the victim's eye to have any affect whatsoever, so the victim can avoid the genjutsu if they can avoid eye contact or looking at the finger. (Of course that's easier said than done with an elite opponent like Itachi.)

Though in Kurenai's case, they did technically experience the symptoms immediately as she vanished from their sight as soon as she performed the hand-seals. Then there was a waiting period before Itachi and Kisame got trapped in two different ways. Seems like either that was all the Tree Binding Death which ended up working in stages (making her disappear, sinking peripheral targets and binding the main target) or she did a combination of genjutsu to accomplish different effects.

For Kabuto's sleeping genjutsu, I'm wondering if the ones who escaped it saw the feathers and then reversed it before the effect was completed, if they detected the genjutsu in their system and reversed it before they even experienced the feathers, or if the genjutsu release actually blocks a genjutsu from entering their system in the first place if they feel it trying. Because while the crowd and Naruto all see the feathers, the ones who escaped it aren't shown with any feathers in the panels they appears.

The databook entry for Demonic Illusion: Tree Binding Death doesn't even mention the invisibility or the sinking of peripheral targets into the ground, so I'm inclined to believe that it was a combination of genjutsu. That is, she used a quick-acting invisibility genjutsu to buy herself time and safety while performing the much more complex and slower-acting sinking and binding genjutsu.

I dunno about the sleeping genjutsu though. All those explanations sound equally plausible to me.

Sharingan v2 (Knyght)

So here's the Sharingan article with links and everything. I've reserved all mentions of the Tailed Beast for the MS article but if you think it'd be better off here (or split between the two) let me know.

Sharingan v2

The Sharingan is the doujutsu belonging to the Uchiha Clan. It originated with Otsutsuki Indra who was the progenitor of the clan and older son of the Sage of Six Paths. Its powers are derived from the Rinne Sharingan of the Rabbit Goddess that she acquired when she consumed the fruit of the God Tree.

It has six separate abilities which can be broadly classified into two categories, called the Eye of Insight and the Eye of Hypnotism. The abilities of the Eye of Insight relate to the physical perception of the world around oneself, while the abilities of the Eye of Hypnotism relate to the spiritual ability to perceive and utilize chakra. The powers of the Eye of Insight will always be active as long as the Sharingan itself is active, however, the powers of the Eye of Hypnotism must be consciously accessed by focusing additional chakra to the eyes.

The Sharingan has three stages of development, each of which causes the gaining of another tomoe and the unlocking of two new powers upon being reached.

Awakening the Sharingan

Otsutsuki Indra possessed the Sharingan from the day he was born but his descendants needed to awaken the doujutsu for themselves.

To do so, one must experience a powerful emotional condition with regards to a person precious to them - this emotion can be positive, driven by a desire to protect or reunite with a loved one, but more often, per the clan's primary occupation as shinobi, it is negative, brought on by stress or loss.

When this powerful emotion is first experienced the brain releases a special form of chakra that affects the optic nerves, transforming the eyes into Sharingan; for that reason the Sharingan is described as an "eye that reflects the heart". Unlike the Byakagun, only a relatively small number of Uchiha ever awaken their bloodline.

When first awakened each Sharingan usually will have only one tomoe. Most of those who awaken it are young children driven to extreme emotions by their warring lifestyle before they have matured. Late bloomers are ones who might awaken the Sharingan with two tomoe in one or each of their eyes. Otherwise, through training and continued use the Sharingan will develop a second tomoe and then, upon full maturation, a third.

First Tomoe

The first level of the Eye of Insight is the clarity of perception. The doujutsu is able to perceive far more visual information than a normal eye and processes it for the user. They see everything around them in perfect detail, from the smallest twitch of a person's muscles to individual grains of sand on a beach. The user can see much farther than normal, as well as see much smaller objects in greater detail than normally possible. It can quickly adjusts to intense flashes of light without harm or see within low-light conditions. The way that the Sharingan gleams in the dark as it reflects any available light has even been used by the Uchiha in psychological warfare.

Their enhanced processing power means that they are also able to perceive and follow extremely fast moving objects that would appear as just a blur to a normal person. This allows them to keep up with a faster or tricky opponent, if not tactivally maneuver them into a disadvantageous position. It also aids them in seeing their opponent's hand-seals when casting jutsu which can help them discern the mechanics of them depending on which hand-seals are used, or avoiding counter attacks that couldn't have been seen with ordinary eyes.

But the greater the difference in speed between the user and the enemy then the less effective this ability becomes. Even if the Sharingan can perceive their movements, if their own body isn't fast enough to react to what they can see then they can still be overcome.

Another benefit of this enhanced clarity is the ability to recognize most non-Sharingan based visual genjutsu. Because the user can see the world in far greater detail and with far greater focus, they will easily detect even the smallest irregularity or flaw in the illusion which a normal person, including the creator of the genjutsu, would overlook. Only someone who has the Sharingan themselves can possibly craft a visual illusion with high enough fidelity to fool another Sharingan user.

The first level of the Eye of Hypnosis is the perception of chakra. The user is able to see chakra on a visible spectrum as different colors, unlike ordinary people who can only see it in high quantities or when transformed by jutsu. This allows them to see through most clone jutsu and detect those using chakra to hide or disguise themselves. This perception even penetrates through solid objects for some distance, allowing the user to discover chakra-charged people and objects (such as chakra-molding ninja or ninjutsu-based landmines) hidden underground, in trees or behind walls.

This ability also gives the user an incredible defense against any normal kind of genjutsu, including those that aren't visual based, because they can see the chakra of a targeted genjutsu as it travels to and enters their own body as well as the "anchor" of any area-based genjutsu. This foreknowledge ensures that a ninja actively focusing chakra to their Sharingan can almost never be surprised by an illusion, giving them time to fortify their chakra system to resist the incoming genjutsu and to better prepare a counter for it once they are ensnared.

Second Tomoe

The second level of the Eye of Insight is mimicry. The user is now able to instantly memorize any physical movement they witness that is compatible with their body structure. This allows the user to easily read another person's lips, or copy another person's writing just by watching and mimicking the movements of their pencil. Any kind of physical skill can be quickly learned in this way, from playing an instrument to operating complicated machinery.

This memorization applies to any type of taijutsu they witness as well. As long as their movements are without normal human limitation, the Sharingan user should be replicate mimic them exactly with their own body. However how well this is imitatation works depends on the individual's strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, flexibility and other physical factors. If they mimic a skill that is beyond them, they can cause strain of their body that could possibly result in permanent injury if they can successfully perform it at all.

One does not even need to see the full extent of an individual's fighting style to successfully mimic it with the Sharingan. By visualizing their movements based on the information they had memorized before, they can essentially mimic the result of that image training to acquire the same capabilities and movements when enough effort.

The second level of the Eye of Hypnosis is perception of chakra flow. The user can now not only perceive chakra, but also perceive the way it flows throughout the human body. This allows the user to detect irregularities in the chakra flow of others, such as being under the influence of a genjutsu. This also greatly aids in the learning and mastery of genjutsu, as the user is able to directly see exactly how their genjutsu affects the flow of chakra in the brain of another person.

Being able to see their chakra flow also allows them to assess chakra levels so they can detect when an opponent has exhausted their stamina, essentially meaning that they are defenceless. On the other hand, it can help them predict when they are preparing to cast a jutsu based on the chakra building up inside them.

Third Tomoe

The final level of the Eye of Insight is prediction. The Sharingan can now use its ability to read and copy body language of other people to predict their movements, giving the user an incredible advantage in combat. To the user, this ability is experienced within the mind's eye as a "shadow"; of the other person moving a short distance ahead of their real body. By avoiding the points that the shadow is aiming for and positioning themselves to take advantage, they anticipate and avoid the enemy's attack while launching their own to turn the tables.

To other people, it can seem like a form of precognition or mind reading and the Uchiha clan has long encouraged this misunderstanding of their bloodline as a form of propaganda.
While powerful, this prediction is not perfect; if the opponent is able to move their body in ways that are unnatural, to suppress the normal tells of their body language and move in ways that are highly erratic and seemingly random, then this prediction can be thwarted as the user struggles to react.

This prediction is also less effective the faster the opponent is able to move. While it helps neutralize the advantage a faster opponent would have, the less time the Sharingan has to calculate their movements then the shorter and less accurate its predictions will be. The prediction will similarly be reduced if the opponent hides or otherwise obscures their body language, such as by wearing a mask and thick, loose clothing.

The final level of the Eye of Hypnosis is projecting chakra. The Sharingan is now able to instantly sends chakra directly from the user into the target's brain through their optic nerve upon making eye contact. It allows them to manipulate the victim with a unique ability known as Genjutsu: Sharingan by hynoptising them with any genjutsu they have learned without using hand-seals or providing any other tell to alert them of its effect.

As the genjutsu travels extremely quickly, bypassing most of the body's normal defenses and usually hits the target completely unexpectedly, the effects can be devastatingly effective to a normal person. Because it can be used to cast practically any genjutsu, it is incredibly versatile and serves many purposes: inducing instantaneous unconsciousness in the target; paralyzing the target's body; forceful extraction of any information the target possesses; relaying of memories to the target; removing genjutsu placed on the target by others; even controlling the target's actions.

It is a powerful skill even against another Sharingan user who would be able to resist most other genjutsu and such battles consist of genjutsu exchanges as they manipulate one another's illusions with their own.

Copying with the Sharingan

When the Eye of Insight and Eye of Hypnosis are used together properly upon acquiring the second tomoe, these two powers can be used to effectively copy and learn any ninjutsu or genjutsu the user is able to clearly witness being performed. By memorizing another's handseals and watching the flow of chakra throughout their body, the user can gain an incredible understanding of the mechanics of their jutsu. If the user also meets all the requirements of the jutsu (chakra control is up to par, body is strong enough, nature transformation is already known, etc) they may even be able to immediately perform the jutsu themselves.

While in theory the user can learn any jutsu this way, in practice it depends on the respective abilities of the copyist and the copied. The more skilled the ninja then the more capable they are of performing advanced, complicate jutsu without needing to use the entire sequence of hand-seals or even most of the hand-seals as they internally perform the necessary shape and nature transformation.

Copying such jutsu is significantly more difficult, as the user must replicate it from observing the individual's chakra flow alone without knowing which hand-seals had been excluded as unnecessary. So unless they are so skilled that they can mimic the target based on that alone, they would need to practice the jutsu until they achieve the same level of mastery or possess enough knowledge to decipher which hand-seals are needed. Using the Sharingan to copy a complicated A-rank jutsu performed entirely without seals, such as the Rasengan, would be almost as difficult as attempting to learn it the normal way.

Even if they are physically incapable of performing the jutsu themselves, the knowledge is still permanently imprinted in their minds. This includes jutsu that can only be cast with a kekkei genkai which are impossible for anyone to mimic without having the same genetic abilities. If a Sharingan user copied one of these and then acquired the necessary kekkei genkai, they could potentially mimic it themselves.

Transplanting the Sharingan

When the Sharingan is extracted from its original bearer, dead or alive, it will automatically be fixed in its activated state and can be implanted in another person to allow them to use its abilities.

It has been known for Uchiha who have lost one or both eyes in battle from injuries or kinjutsu to have them replaced with the eyes of a recently deceased Uchiha or from a stock of preserved Sharingan kept safe for that purpose. While there are minor differences in using these in comparison to their original eyes, they are generally neglible so one pair can be used as well as another and they can be switched on and off at will.

The Sharingan can be also be transplanted into non-Uchiha. But because they are not genetically compatible with the doujutsu, the eye is forced to consume a large than average amount of the bearer's chakra to compensate for its insufficient quality. Typically, a non-Uchiha with just a single Sharingan will experience fatigue far faster than a Uchiha with both Sharingan active.

Moreover, it is impossible for them to deactivate the doujutsu so it is always consuming a portion of chakra whereas a Uchiha can just switch it off to conserve their own. Because of this, non-Uchiha will usually cover their Sharingan when they aren't using it in order to decrease the amount of visual information it needs to process and therefore reduce its chakra usage as much as possible.

In the exceptional circumstance that two people share half of a pair of Sharingan, it is possible for them to see what the other eye is seeing when in relatively close proximity and experiencing extreme emotions. However such an event has only occured once in the history of the Uchiha, long after the majority had died out in fact.

That looks damn good to me.

Heh, I wonder how the Naruto wiki would react if you tried to submit that to replace their inferior article on the Sharingan. It's much more elegant and easier to understand, and I'd say that it's 90% canon compliant. About the only fanon is a couple spots where you explain in detail the mechanics of particular abilities that were left somewhat vague in canon.

The normal (non-Mangekyo) Sharingan can suppress the Bijuu, but maybe not control them. Sasuke managed to stop the flow from the Kyuubi to Naruto in early part 2.

I'm aware but I'd intended to keep it with the MS side so that it'd all be in one place and because it's primarily tied with unlocking the MS yet is still performed with the Sharingan itself. I feel like it'll make more sense to read when kept all together.

It originated with Otsutsuki Indra,
Hagoromo stated Kaguya had both Byakugan and Sharingan, actually.

This suggests Sharingan and Rinnegan aren't the same eye, which is further implied by Momoshiki's hand-rinnegan being a "normal" Rinnegan and not a RinneSharingan like Kaguya's.

Ootsuki=Byakugan
Ootsuki+God Tree=Byakugan+Rinnegan
Kaguya=Byakugan+Sharingan(recessive trait?)
Kaguya+God Tree=Byakugan+RinneSharingan(Rinnegan+Sharingan)

Mangekyo isn't an evolution of Sharingan, Mangekyo is activating some recessive traits of the Rinnegan nd making the Sharingan itself recessive once evolved to Rinnegan.

Maybe a "pure" Rinnegan like Momoshiki's lacks the visual abilities of the "Sharingan Traits Rinnegan"

The user's brain is able to process vastly more visual information than a normal human.
Given it works even once transplanted, I'd say the Sharingan works as a GPU pre-processing visual information and sending them "decrypted" to the brain.
It would explain the massive chakra consumption.

Since Kaguya's doujutsu is called the Rinne-Sharingan which she got from eating the fruit (says DB4) and Hagoromo technically said she had the power of the Sharingan, I'm treating it as a separate doujutsu which Indra being the first human to have the Sharingan itself.

I'll tweak that bit about the brain.

Fiddled with first paragraph to include it.

Also moved the bit about copying jutsu to its own section earlier because the placement was bothering me. :sisi:

Yeah Sharingan and Rinnegan are clearly separate but related "sister" kekkei genkai, rather than the Sharingan being a devolved/regressed version of the Rinnegan.

Because while the Sharingan weirdly can be transformed into the Rinnegan, we've also seen that their powers are mostly unrelated, to the point that Madara would switch back and forth between both bloodlines to use whichever was more convenient at the moment. We've also seen several people who had the rinnegan but who seemingly couldn't access the Sharingan, including the Sage himself. And Kaguya and Sasuke had both bloodlines combined into one that had the visual traits and seemingly the powers of both simultaneously.

Knyght

The Collector
Though at the same time Sasuke's version isn't called the Rinne Sharingan and Kaguya never demonstrated any abilities related to the Six Paths.

My headcanon is that Sasuke's version not being called the Rinne Sharingan is just a mistake. Because fucking look at it. It clearly has visual traits of both bloodlines, and Sasuke used the jutsu of both bloodline with that single eye. His eye not being a Rinne Sharingan makes no goddamn sense.

As for Kaguya not using Six Path jutsu... Perhaps the Six Paths jutsu aren't instinctive like most kekkei genkai jutsu and had to be invented first? So the Sage created all those jutsu after many years of training and experimentation, Madara learned them from scrolls passed down by him or something, Obito learned the jutsu from Madara and taught them to Nagato, and Sasuke learned them by watching Madara use them and copying them with his Sharingan. But Kaguya, being kind of lazy, just relied on her raw power and the kekkei genkai jutsu that were instinctive to fight.

Also maybe her Rinne-Sharingan being a third eye acquired from eating the fruit instead of being born with it or it evolving from one of her natural eyes made it more difficult to use those jutsu?

by the way, the anime adaptation of the Gaiden might be interesting for the Sharingan article.
We've already seeing something that was just suggested in the manga, a gradua l awakening of Sarada's Sharingan, which appears to cause a degree of discomfort to Sarada(probably because it modified her eyesight and caused incompatibility issues with the glasses.dll drivers)

Knyght

The Collector
You mean when Sarada's awakening the Sharingan and it looks faded out?

I'm not sure that's unusual, tbh. We just don't have much of a comparison cuz whenever we see anyone else awaken the Sharingan we don't really see the transition as their face is out of sight. Sasuke's faded into sight but that was during the Land of Waves so it doesn't quite count given his circumstances.

the anime has Sarada still in the village, but a few times it has shown her eyes getting lighter and she claiming a degree of discomfort with her eyes- in the manga, too, we have seen her eyes becoming slightly lighter at times but before awakening her Sharingan, but it was taken more as a artistic choice\greater detail of the eye(black eyes are actually just really dark brown, after all)

The occasions of this event, in the anime, are correlated to situations where Sarada appears to be feeling strong emotions.

I still find it bizarre that it's even possible for an Uchiha to need glasses. I would have thought that any person with the genetic potential to awaken the Sharingan would also have inherited perfect eyesight.

Does Sarada still need her glasses to see correctly when her Sharingan is activated?

Why? The eye goes through such a massive change when the Sharingan activates, the previous state is arguably irrelevant.

Does Sarada still need her glasses to see correctly when her Sharingan is activated?
Unknown. Hell, we don't know what is exactly what is her issue: shirt-sight, long-sight?

Popular Misconceptions Part 1

Here's that list of popular misconception I mentioned some time back. It's been posted on NF but it doesn't let guests see hyperlinks so...

Characters

Kakashi was in charge of Team 7 to train Sasuke

When Kakashi is introduced, Hiruzen first says that he’s the best choice to watch over Naruto and then mentions that Sasuke was another member of the team.

It wasn’t until the training month of the Chuunin Exams that Kakashi specifically trained Sasuke who had to face Gaara and was being scouted by Orochimaru. After that, Jiraiya told him that he would keep training Naruto so Kakashi should focus on Sasuke.

Tsunade's hides her true appearance with an genjutsu/illusion

Tsunade uses jutsu to disguise her real appearance, making her look younger than her actual age. When she can’t maintain the transformation, her body physically changes back to its true age. The exact name and nature of the jutsu she uses is unknown.

Zabuza tried to kill the Fourth Mizukage

Zabuza launched a coup d’etat and tried to assassinate the Mizukage. According to the first fanbook which states last year a group of shinobi staged a revolt, but it ended in failure this took place approximately a year before Zabuza’ death in the Land of Waves.

It is unconfirmed who was Mizukage at the time so we do not know if it was the Fourth Mizukage Yagura or the Fifth Mizukage Mei.

Sai thought Ino was beautiful

When Sai decided to start calling people by nicknames, Naruto told him to base it on their traits. So he essentially calls Sakura ugly and gets smacked for it.

Next he intends to call Chouji fat but Naruto stopped him. Because of that, he decided it would be best to give someone a nickname that’s the opposite of their actual traits. So he calls Ino beautiful which is the opposite of what he was thinking.

Hidan stays immortal by killing others with his ritual

This misunderstanding originates from the fan translation of Hidan’s profile which said: The Curse he received in lieu of a blessing is in accordance with the perpetuation of massacre.

But the official translation is: As a reward for his many massacres, Hidan acquires an immortal body via the Way of Jashin.

In other words, he does not kill to remain immortal, he was granted immortality (via forbidden rituals) as a reward for the killing he had done.
The only other thing we’re told about his immortality is from a Q&A with Kishimoto in the second fanbook:

Q: Is Hidan still alive?
A: Hidan is alive. However, if he doesn't get nutrition he will die, he's slowly rotting away.

Shisui was Kagami’s son

Shisui was described as a descendant of Uchiha Kagami rather than his son and their exact relationship is unknown.

Hashirama died from overusing his regeneration

It is unknown exactly how Hashirama died. All we know is that he died shortly after Konoha flourished and sometime in the First Shinobi World War.

Nawaki died in the Second Shinobi World War

Nawaki died while Konoha was in the middle of a war but it is unknown whether it was Second Shinobi World War or a smaller conflict.

Naruto heals fast because he's an Uzumaki

Naruto’s healing ability was always attributed with the Nine-Tails by Kakashi (twice), Kabuto, Sakura and Fukasaku. And we have seen him heal at an accelerated rate when actively using theNine-Tails’chakra as proof of that association.

The Uzumaki Clan are known for their vitality/life force but, excluding Naruto, the only Uzumaki associated with healing is Karin and the exact nature of her healing ability is unclear.

So while Naruto’s heritage might be partially responsible for his fast healing, the Nine-Tails definitely is.

Tsunade has huge chakra levels

Tsunade has above-average chakra levels but not to the same degree as characters like Naruto and Jiraiya. She has 4 points in Stamina and only has access to a large volume of chakra by using her Strength of a Hundred Seal which is designed to store her chakra for future use.

Tsunade is called Senju Tsunade, Haku is called Yuki Haku, Kimimaro is called Kaguya Kimimaro etc.

Tsunade is descended from the Senju Clan on her grandfather's side and the Uzumaki Clan on her grandmother's side but she has never been identified with the name of Senju.

The same applies to Haku and Kimimaro who are descended from the Yuki Clan and Kaguya Clan respectively but are not identified with those clan names.

Karin is Sarada's birth mother

Sakura is Sarada’s birth mother. Karin was present when Sarada was born.

Tenten is Metal Lee's mother

Kishimoto stated in an interview that he hadn’t come up with Rock Lee’s wife/Metal Lee’s mother yet.

Kishimoto didn't know that Itachi was going to be a good guy when he first appeared in the manga

In the Kobayashi and Kishimoto interview, Kishimoto said that originally Sasuke had an elder brother who had done something bad. But when Itachi was actually introduced in the manga after the Chuunin Exams, Kishimoto had decided that he was secretly a good guy who had done something bad because of circumstances.

Jutsu

Rock Lee cannot use chakra

Rock Lee can create and control chakra like anyone else as demonstrated by his ability to walk on water. He just lacks any talent in using ninjutsu and genjutsu, so he chose to focus exclusively on taijutsu.

Maito Gai had the same lack of talent but learned ninjutsu such as the C-rank Summoning Jutsu and has learned nature transformation for Fire and Lightning chakra natures.

Naruto learned the Rasengan in a week

It took him around four and a half weeks in total.

Naruto completed the first stage in three days and one night. He completed the second stage in threeweeks or so. The next day (presumably) Jiraiya gave him a hint to improve his focus which allowed him to finally complete it. And the third stage was completed seven days later to win his bet with Tsunade.

The misconception likely stems from the emphasis placed on the final week.

The Transformation Jutsu is an genjutsu/illusion

It is officially classed as a ninjutsu which causes a physical transformation to turn the caster into another person or object. Which is why Sasuke is able to accurately throwNaruto when transformed into a shuriken.

Naruto’s Transformation isn’t special as far as we know, he is just shown using it more than any other character in the series.

Naruto has too much chakra to use the Clone Jutsu

As explained by Ebisu, Naruto’s poor chakra control means that he creates more chakra than he needs but then uses too little in the jutsu itself. So the reason his Clone Jutsu creates only one poorly made clone instead of three correct ones is because he wastes most of the chakra that should be used for the clone. This is also highlighted the tree walking exercise when Naruto uses too little chakra to stick to the tree.

The more chakra one has, the less control they have and vice versa

When Kakashi states that Naruto and Sasuke have incomparably greater chakra than Sakura, it has been misconstrued as the reason they had trouble with the exercise when it was meant as its own statement.

Naruto has huge chakra levels and poor chakra control but both are said to be because of the influence of the Nine-Tails. Otherwise chakra control has never been associated with one’s chakra levels and has always been treated as a skill/talent in its own right rather than a byproduct of how much chakra one has.

Naruto would have a 100 times more chakra than Kakashi if he didn’t have to suppress the Nine-Tails

Kakashi says that Naruto would have a 100 times more chakra than himself if Yamato wasn’t suppressing the Nine-Tails, not Naruto himself.

Raikiri is more powerful than Chidori

They are the same jutsu. It is officially the A-rank Chidori but also known as the S-rank Raikiri.

  • Chidori is the formal name while Raikiri is the nickname.
  • Raikiri and Chidori use the exact same hand-seal sequence.
  • Kakashi can only use it four times a day in Part 1 so there’s no difference in chakra cost.
  • Chidori uses nature and shape transformation, not just one or the other
  • The first databook says that when Kakashi uses Chidori, it is known as Raikiri. And it says that Raikiri is Kakashi’s single original jutsu.
  • When Deidara calls it Raikiri, Sasuke tells him it’s technically called Chidori.
  • Chidori itself is based on the famous sword which was said to cut down a Thunder God within a lightning bolt and was thus renamed as Raikiri. The sword itself was unchanged.
Kakashi cannot use Chidori/Raikiri after losing his Sharingan

When Kakashi first developed the Chidori/Raikiri, Minato warned him that he shouldn’t use it because he was running too fast to see any counterattacks. Rock Lee noticed the same thing when Sasuke used it. Once Kakashi acquired the Sharingan, his jutsu was perfected as its insight overcomes the limitations of normal vision.

It would be more accurate that Kakashi cannot safely use Raikiri to its full potential - by charging at full speed - after losing his Sharingan because he’d be in danger of missing his target and being counterattacked. He would essentially be forced to use it only at point blank range if he did.

Tobirama was the greatest water ninjutsu user in the series

Tobirama was described as a superior ninjutsu user in the first databook for being able to use Water Release without a water source but he was never said to be the greatest user of Water Release.

The first databook states the following about Water Release and Earth Release:

A different level — The ninjutsu of the Hokage

There are multiple categories of ninjutsu, such as Water Release and Earth Release but essentially, whether those techniques may or may not be activated is influenced by the terrain, and using Water Release someplace where there is no water is nearly impossible. Only shinobi with Hokage-class levels of mastery may free themselves from this law of Nature.

A Hokage’s ninjutsu stand on a whole other level. This hijutsu (Wood Release) is a legend among legends. There’s no one in Konoha who doesn’t know about it.

So in Part 1, casting Water Release and Earth Release without a natural source was a kage-level feat. However this appears to have been retconned as various characters are shown using both jutsu styles without a source as well.

Tsunade's superhuman strength is the result of raw muscle power

In the second databook, Tsunade’s superhuman strength is said to be the result of her chakra control:

Taken to the bitter extreme! Princess Tsunade's legendary absurd strength!!

It would seem Tsunade's outrageous strength completely ignores the laws of nature!! The challenge to common sense that is her power is due in no small part to her artful chakra control and fine-tuning. To give things a name, by instantly collecting chakra into her fist and fingers, she obtains a power of destruction bodily strength alone cannot achieve.

Sakura develops her own version of this strength with the Cherry Blossom Impact. However Sakura’s Power/Strength stat is 3 while Tsunade’s is 5 which suggests the latter had greater muscular strength overall.

Hiruzen stopped Orochimaru from summoning Minato

Kabuto explained that Orochimaru wasn’t able to revive Minato with Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation because his soul was trapped inside the God of Death because of the Dead Demon Consuming Seal. It was only when Orochimaru unsealed his soul that he could be revived.

Minato used the Dead Demon Consuming Seal to seal the Nine-Tails inside Naruto

Minato used the Dead Demon Consuming Seal to seal the Yin half of the Nine-Tails inside himself and the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style to seal the Yang half in Naruto.

Coating the Rasenshuriken in senjutsu chakra lets Naruto throw it

When used in Sage Mode, the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken is made of senjutsu chakra which makes it easier to control so it can be thrown.

Naruto was also able to throw the Rasenshuriken in Nine-Tails Chakra Mode and Six Paths Sage Mode during the Fourth Shinobi World War. In The Last: Naruto the Movie, Naruto was able to throw it without needing to use any of the above modes.

Gaara's control over sand comes from his mother/father

Gaara’s control over sand comes from being the One-Tails Jinchuuriki known as Shukaku of the Sand. But when Karura died, her desire to protect Gaara somehow seeped into his sand and gave it the ability to automatically protect him regardless of his own will. This is the Shield of Sand.

When Shukaku was extracted from Gaara and he was revived, he kept the ability to control it. Kishimoto briefly explains why in the third databook.

Gaara’s sand is weak to water

Gaara has never shown any weakness to water itself. He struggled against the Second Mizukage's Hydrification Jutsu which specifically has a consistency more like oil than water. And he showed no problem restraining Uchiha Madara with his sand within the Lightning Water Dragon Bullet Jutsu.

Perfect Jinchuuriki are immune to genjutsu

Tailed Beasts can free their Jinchuuriki from a genjutsu but they cannot prevent them from being caught in one in the first place so far as we know. They still experience the effects of the genjutsu until they have been freed.

So they are not immune in the sense that they are unaffected by it entirely but they can escape it very easily with their partner's cooperation.

Sasuke’s Amaterasu comes from Itachi

Itachi used the Transcription Seal: Amaterasu to give Sasuke a single use of Amaterasu as protection against Tobi. When Sasuke awoke the Mangekyo Sharingan, he possessed Amaterasu himself.

Sasuke’s Mangekyo Sharingan has Tsukuyomi

Sasuke has never performed Tsukuyomi, he has only cast Genjutsu: Sharingan with his Mangekyo Sharingan. Instead he has Amaterasu with his left eye and Kagutsuchi with his right eye.

Danzo compares Sasuke’s genjutsu unfavourably to Itachi’s Tsukuyomi but he was not claiming that Sasuke himself had Tsukuyomi.

Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu are required to awaken the Susanoo

It was said that only those who have mastered Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi can awaken Susanoo in the third databook. However Sasuke awakening it when he has Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi proves that this was retconned and he claims that only those who have awakened the Mangeko Sharingan in both eyes can have it.

Blaze Release is a combination of two chakra natures

Blaze Release is the name Sasuke chose for jutsu style that uses Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi, creating unquenchable black flames and applying shape transformation. It has no known relation to kekkei genkai which combine two chakra natures to create a new one.

Ninja can only learn elemental jutsu for their affinity or nature transformation

Ninja can learn jutsu of any chakra nature even if they don’t have an affinity for it as most jounin master at least two chakra natures. And they don’t need nature transformation to learn every elemental ninjutsu as Chouji was able to perform Earth Release: Practice Brick Jutsu without knowing earth nature transformation (which was presumably the case for at least a few of the Allied Shinobi Forces in that scene). But Kakashi implied that it is needed for high level elemental ninjutsu.

Sasuke has an affinity for Fire and Lightning

Most people are able to tap into one chakra nature more easily than the others. The Uchiha Clan typically have an affinity for Fire but Sasuke has been described as a similar type to Kakashi when he learned Chidori who has an affinity for Lightning and created numerous jutsu variants. Sasuke uses two chakra natures but it was never officially confirmed which chakra nature was Sasuke’s affinity.

Suigetsu's Hydrification Jutsu is a kekkei genkai

It’s a hiden ninjutsu which means that it can theoretically be learned by anyone with the necessary knowledge and skill.

Kotoamatsukami's 10 year cool down didn't apply to Shisui

Kotoamatsukami is said to have a cooldown period of over 10 years unless one possesses Senju Hashirama’s chakra. That was the only exception ever given for that cool down period and it has never been stated that the same didn’t apply to Uchiha Shisui. His age at his time of death and the age at which he awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan are unknown. If the cooldown didn’t apply to him Itachi would have no way of knowing how long the cooldown would last since it didn’t end until after his death, and Danzo was seemingly able to reduce the cooldown for his eye by using Senju Hashirama’s chakra.

There is Perfect and Imperfect Sage Mode

There is no Perfect Sage Mode, it was a mistranslation of Fukasaku's words. The only time a perfect sage was mentioned was when Kabuto described himself in contrast to Orochimaru. Those who successfully perform Sage Mode have the rings around their eyes as proof which are seen with Kabuto, Naruto, Minato, Jiraiya (with frog aspects) and Hashirama.

Naruto learned the Flying Thunder God Jutsu

After Naruto spoke with the Sage of Six Paths, he picked up one of his father’s kunai in preparation of Tobirama teleporting Sasuke to his side to fight Madara. And in Chapter 700, he used the Body Flicker Jutsu to reach Boruto. Naruto never used the Flying Thunder God Jutsu himself.

The misunderstanding partly stems from the confusing way that the Flying Thunder God Jutsu and Body Flicker Jutsu are referred to in the series despite working in entirely different ways. For instance, the official translation refers to Space-Time Ninjutsu as Teleportation Ninjutsu and the Body Flicker Jutsu as the Teleportation Jutsu, and even fan translations have Tobirama, Rin and a Kumo-nin refer to FTG as the Body Flicker Jutsu.

Naruto's Truth Seeking Balls were all destroyed in the battle with Sasuke

Naruto had three remaining before his Six Paths Sage Mode was deactivated. They weren’t seen again.

The Samsara of Heavenly Life Jutsu doesn’t have to kill the user

It's confirmed that it kills the user in the fourth databook.

Konan implies that Nagato could have survived if he had enough chakra but this was apparently retconned or she had faulty information.

Limbo: Border Jail is Madara’s Mangkeyo Sharingan jutsu

This jutsu was confirmed to belong to his Rinnegan in the fourth databook.

Popular Misconceptions Part 2

Plot/Background

Sasuke still lives in his old home after the Uchiha Massacre

At the time Sasuke defected from Konoha, Sasuke was shown living in an apartment building. It is unknown where this was located in Konoha.

The Uchiha, Hyuuga, Aburame and Akimichi are the four noble clans of Konoha

The first databook has the following entry:

The traditional clans in the Leaf Village!

Other than the Uchiha clan, there are many clans in the Hidden Leaf Village that transfer their techniques through secret scrolls or bloodlines. Each clan has a very unique skill, and its lineages are protected by rigid rules to stop foreigners from taking them.

Uchiha Clan: Bears the Sharingan, a Kekkei Genkai. Used to be the best clan in the Leaf Village, but currently is considered decadent.

Hyuuga Clan: Bears the Byakugan, a Kekkei Genkai. It's focused on the main house.

Akimichi Clan: Bears the Baika no Jutsu. Are all clan members 'big-boned'?

Aburame Clan: Once they're born, the members of this clan become hosts of the Destruction Bugs.

This is not saying that these four clans in particularly are Konoha’s nobility, only that they are four examples of Konoha’s clans with hiden ninjutsu/kekkei genkai. The second fanbook expands on this but ultimately says the same thing.

One can awaken the Rinnegan by mixing Uchiha and Senju DNA

The Rinnegan is awakened by merging Indra and Ashura’s chakra which recreates Hagoromo’s own chakra or by receiving chakra directly from Hagoromo. Thus only if one of the Indra’s reincarnates implants themselves with the flesh of one of the Asura’s reincarnates (or vice versa) can it be awakened rather than just any Senju or Uchiha.

Sasuke said he had run out of chakra before he escaped Deidara's C0

Deidara says that Sasuke is on his last legs rather than explicitly saying he is out of chakra. He said something similar earlier in the fight. But when Sasuke actually does run out of chakra and tries to force more out, Orochimaru takes over which never happened against Deidara.

The Byakugan was said to be superior to the Sharingan

Kakashi specifically said that the Byakugan’s insight was superior to the Sharingan, not that the doujutsu was superior as a whole.

The Tailed Beasts needed to be sealed inside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path in the order of their tails e.g. 1-9

Deidara stated that two jinchuuriki had their Tailed Beasts extracted before the One-Tail and the Three-Tails was sealed before the Two Tails. Originally we were only told that the Nine-Tails needed to be sealed last.

When Uchiha Madara was sealing all of the Tailed Beasts himself, Zetsu said that he needed to seal them in numerical order but did not explain why.

Obito is responsible for the Bloody Mist which committed genocide against the kekkei genkai clans

Kirigakure was known as the Bloody Mist before Obito had joined Madara’s cause.

The second databook states it was called this because: Long ago, the horrible 'kill another student' graduation exam was carried out, and from this the Hidden Mist Village was given the nickname 'Bloody Mist Village'…

The Land of Water as a whole is responsible for killing people with kekkei genkai and had apparently been going on for at least as long as Haku was alive. Kirigakure was only specifically said to be involved in killing the Kaguya Clan who invaded them.

Danzo cast Kotoamatsukami on the Land of Fire Daimyo

It was never confirmed whether or not Danzo used Kotoamatsukami to be named the Sixth Hokage.

Ao saw the Kotoamatsukami cast on Mifune

When Mifune chose Danzo as leader of the Allied Shinobi Forces, Ao grew suspicious and used the Byakugan. He saw that Danzo’s right side had the same colour chakra as Uchiha Shisui and accused him of using Kotoamatsukami to manipulate Mifune into choosing him. Afterwards, he confirmed that Mifune’s chakra network wasn’t currently disturbed by genjutsu.

So Ao never actually saw Mifune under the genjutsu itself, he just suspected that Danzo had used it.

Sasuke trained the entire month for the third test of the Chuunin Exams

After Kakashi applied the Evil Sealing Method to Sasuke, he fell unconscious and went to the hospital. He left the hospital after fourteen days to meet Kakashi to train for the next two weeks.

Missing ninja cross out the village symbol on their forehead protectors

Missing ninja such as Momochi Zabuza and Deidara were shown to have undamaged forehead protectors.

Only the latest incarnation of Akatsuki scratch their forehead protector to indicate their membership in the organisation. This apparently originated with Nagato crossing out the symbol of Amegakure on his forehead protector after Yahiko died and he took over Akatsuki.

The Kinkaku Force, not Kinkaku killed Tobirama

Shikamaru confirmed that Tobirama was killed specifically by Kinkaku himself when he fought the Kinkaku Force. The revelation that Kinkaku was definitely in the Kinkaku Force and responsible for killing Tobirama was lost in translation.

One of the Sarutobi Clan must train the Ino-Shika-Cho

It is tradition for the Sarutobi to give the earrings to the Yamanaka, Nara and Akimichi Clans when they achieve the chuunin rank. However it was never said that a Sarutobi must train them as genin.

Every hidden village has their own Hunter Ninja Corps

Kirigakure is the only village said to have a Hunter Ninja Corps in its Anbu. In the first fanbook, the section for Shinobi society in other villages says the following: Hunters Squads are a special unit of the Hidden Mist's Anbu. Also called the corpse disposal unit, they possess medical and assassin training.

Kusagakure is in the Land of Grass, Amegakure is the Land of Rain, Otogakure is in the Land of Sound etc.

All of these hidden villages are in unnamed countries. Whenever characters refer to these nations, they talk about the hidden village rather than the country itself.

Anime

Izanagi and Izanami require the Mangekyo Sharingan to be used

In the manga, both of these forbidden jutsu only require the user to have a Sharingan which is rendered blind by using it.

In Naruto: Shippuuden Episode #338, everyone who used these jutsu also had the Mangekyo Sharingan.

Utakata was captured by Pain after Jiraiya died

In the manga, it is unknown who captured Utakata or when. It’s possible that he was one of the Jinchuuriki captured before Gaara.

In Naruto Shippuuden Episode #324, he was only shown by captured by Pain at the conclusion of an anime-only story arc.

Ino was apprenticed under Tsunade

In the manga, Ino learned medical ninjutsu during the timeskip but it is unknown who she learned it from.

In Naruto Episode #220, she was shown training under Tsunade’s supervision.

Tobirama used the Bringer-of-Darkness Jutsu on Hiruzen

In the manga, Hashirama cast the Bringer-of-Darkness Jutsu on Hiruzen.

In Naruto Episode #72, Tobirama was the one who used the jutsu instead.

Orochimaru, Kimimaro and Kabuto killed the Fourth Kazekage

In the manga, it is only known that Orochimaru was responsible for the death of the Fourth Kazekage and his bodyguards.

In Naruto Episode 127, it shown that Orochimaru killed Rasa with his Kusanagi Blade and was accompanied by Kimimaro and Kabuto who claimed that the Kazekage was "no match against [them]". Orochimaru says that it was thanks to Kimimaro.

Kimimaro was the only Kaguya to have the Shikotsumyaku when they died

In the manga, Kimimaro was only said to be the youngest and most talented of the Kaguya Clan when Orochimaru rescued him. It’s unknown how common the Shikotsumyaku or whether anyone else had died when the clan was wiped out by Kirigakure.

In Naruto Episode 126, there was a flashback showing that Kimimaro had been imprisoned the Kaguya Clan In Naruto Episode 127, Orochimaru says that he was imprisoned because he possessed the power Shikotsumyaku feared by the entire clan (implying that he was the only one who had the kekkei genkai).

Otogakure's country was originally called the Land of Rice Fields

In the manga, Otogakure's country - where the 'official' headquarters resides - was never named.

In Naruto Episode #136, it was said that the country was originally called the Land of Rice Fields before Orochimaru took over.

Shisui had Susanoo

In the manga, it is unknown whether Shisui ever awakened Susanoo.

Kishimoto designed Shisui’s Susanoo specifically for Naruto Shippuuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution’s Ninja Escapades.

Hagoromo had the Sharingan

In the manga, Otsutsuki Hagoromo has only ever been shown with the Rinnegan and it has never been stated that he possessed the Sharingan.

In Naruto Shippuuden Episode #461, he awakened the Sharingan after finding the corpse of his love interest Haori.

Asura had Wood Release

In the manga, Senju Hashirama is the only character we know of who was born with the Wood Release kekkei genkai.

In Naruto Shippuuden Episode #468, Asura was shown using Sage Art Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands.

The Uchiha Clan didn’t fight against the Nine-Tails

In the manga, it is unknown how many of the Uchiha Clan, if any, were involved in the fight against the Nine-Tails.

In Naruto Shippuuden Episode #358, Shimura Danzo ordered the Uchiha Clan to avoid direct engagement against the Nine-Tails.

Fugaku has the Mangeko Sharingan

In the manga, Fugaku was never shown or said to have the Mangekyo Sharingan.

In Naruto Shippuuden Episode #455, Fugaku revealed that he awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan after a comrade sacrificed themselves to save him.

Minato defeated 1'000 ninja single-handedly

In the manga, Iwagakure had a flee-on-sight order on the Yellow Flash but he was never shown and said to have fought a 1'000 ninja himself.

In Naruto Shippuuden Episode #349, Onoki stated that Iwagakure sent 1'000 ninja to invade who were stopped by the Yellow Flash alone.
