Naruto The Official Fourth Naruto Databook Thread

H-Man

Random phantom.
Sakura lacks strength and stamina compared to Haku. Her average stats just don't match.

Anyway part 2 now.

The tragedy hiding under the icy surface...

Combat Machine

His face, hidden under a mask, was so beautiful it resembled a girl's. He had a kind heart and loved plants and birds.
If he didn't need to, he wouldn't even spend life as a ninja, but the blood running down his veins forced him to follow his tragic fate.

^ Haku plays with a bird. He is, truly, a kind boy.

His life was nearly taken by his own father, who he loved. His dream changed after meeting Zabuza... To protect and to fight as Zabuza's "tool", after he took him in and gave him a reason to live: that is Haku's ninja way.

v He took another expression against those who threatened Zabuza. He'd never forgive them.

The cruel fate of his lineage: a sad bearer of a Kekkei Genkai!
Born in a small village in the Water Country, Haku had a happy life until the day his father killed his mother and also tried to kill him, fearing the Kekkei Genkai. Haku ended up killing his own father and, alone, fell in despair.

^ He still holds in his heart happy memories of the time he lived with his parents...

His blood was deemed cursed and took away the happiness of his family. Due to that, Haku lost his reason to live... The one who saved him was Zabuza, who needed Haku's talent.

> Meeting with the Hidden Mist Village Demon. Zabuza changed Haku's destiny.

Freezing murderous instinct!

The Kekkei Genkai's power

Haku fought Sasuke to help Zabuza, whose mission was to murder Tazuna. To take down Sasuke, Haku used the Kekkei Genkai, the power of his blood, combined with his speed and talent. This proved his lineage had a greater meaning in combat. Haku's sad fight had already started...

> The mist increased and he attacked Sasuke with a murderous intent!
^ The air freezes... The power hidden in his blood is activated!

Cold blade
To the gentle Haku, it was hard to play the role of an evil machine. To protect Zabuza's dream and the reason for his rexistence, Haku sacrificed himself in his decision to fight. The cold and sad blade cut through the wind and... a boy, who had an ephemeral life. A white snow flake that danced in the sky...

^ Naruto and Sasuke joined forces against Haku's secret technique to no avail!
Anything new overall?

The databook stats are essentially a measure of how much of an individual's "potential" in that area has been realised.

Quoted/Paraphrased from one of my old Naruversity posts:

The 1st Databook, which covers up to a few chapters into the Konoha Crush Arc, gave Sasuke a speed stat of 3, and Lee a speed stat of 4, despite the fact that we know from their respective fights against Gaara that they're either the exact same actual speed, or so close you couldn't tell otherwise. This, plus the fact that Wave Arc Sasuke (who had yet to even go through his training for the Chuunin Exam's Final) out-sped Haku, who had a speed stat of 4, shows that Sasuke has a much greater "speed potential" than either Lee or Haku. In fact, as both Sasuke and Lee both have speed stats of 4.5 in Databook 3 (Lee's speed stat only increasing by 0.5,*) and we know they were just as fast as each other during the sand-sound invasion, we can deduce that Part 2 Sasuke is "actually" naturally/inherently faster than Lee by a factor of either exactly or approximately 1/3. He's 33-4% (or approx. 33-4%) faster than Lee.
*The fact that many character's strength and speed stats didn't seem to increase very much during the time between the End of Part 1 (Databook 2) and the Sasuke vs. Itachi fight (Databook 3) isn't an indication that they showed little linear physical improvement, but that the majority of their improvement came through their actual growth (getting older.) So "recently turned 13 years old Naruto" went from having "unlocked" 60% of his 13 year-old body's potential strength/speed (Databook 2 stats of 3/3,) to having "unlocked" 65% of his 15+1/2 year-old body's potential strength/speed (Databook 3 stats of 3.5/3.5.)

Seeing as in real life puberty has a massive impact on physical strength, I have no doubt that start of part 2 Naruto could slaughter part 1 Naruto at arm-wrestling.

Hell we don't even have detailed explanations for what each category means. What does the handseal number mean? Speed of forming long strings of seals? Number of non-standard seals learned such as hiden jutsu seals and one-handed seals? Mastery of seals such that one can perform jutsu without needing to form every required handseal?
According to knight504's review of the 3rd databook, the Hand Seal stat symbolises one's "knowledge and proficiency in (hand) seals."

So I guess speed and knowledge, but not necessarily the ability to use ninjutsu without them. After all, Naruto could use an A-rank ninjutsu without hand seals, but his hand seal stat still sucked.

Anything new overall?
The explicit mention of Haku loving birds and plants (though no mention of rabbits), and how he'd rather not be a ninja at all which I think was more implied in the manga. His father killing his mother and attempting to kill him out of fear of their kekkei genkai. I assumed it was some deep-seated hatred against their people rather than him actually being afraid of them. And now I'm sort of imagining that scene as Haku's discovering his kekkei genkai in his father's sight which immediately causes shit to hit the fan with a homicidal overaction. And the reference to Haku's blood forcing his lifestyle is probably metaphorical but a more fanciful intepretation could be those with kekkei genkai being instinctually drawn towards combat.

Picking out some others...Demon Brothers/Ebisu, Yoroi and Kin/Gashir/Snakes.

Of the characters bios for the first databook? Chouji, Hinata, Kurama, Hashirama, Tobirama and Homura/Koharu. Everyone else just had their info boxes translated e.g. age, weight, missions etc.

So barely any.

then, please, add a note explaining the original text said "mist country" but you did take it as outdated and changed it. I'd prefer the reverse, though.

In Also VERY against such kind of "corrections", as changing shit info something different  because you think it's better results into people not being able to trust your translation.
Look, I'm not a goddamn literalist. The fact of the matter is, this is not 2001 where fan translations were early on and people thought nakama had no valid translation ever so don't even try it.

The official country is Water. The official village is Mist. Mizu no Kuni and Kirigakure no Sato. You can argue that I'm not using the correct terms the fanbase does, but in part that's because I'm not even a main fan so I'm not going to look back on sixteen years of a fanbase to understand it.

I'm NOT going to use 'Kiri no Kuni' because my understanding is that it's not the correct term. Haku's from the Water Country. The men obsessed with Kekkei Genkais were from the Water Country. Hidden Mist is in the Water Country. Therefore, the correct term is the Water Country, not the Mist Country.
It's not about being LITERAL.
It's about being CORRECT.

The correct TRANSLATION of THAT piece of writing is "Mist Country". Now, it's likely either a typo or an outdated information.
But IT DOESN'T MATTER.
Translation Notes exist, and they serve perfectly the purpose of informing the reader of such things.

It's 2015 and fan-translation can still be SHIT, as can official translations. It's not an excuse to arbitrary change the meaning of the text without giving an explanation.
Especially because a simple "T/N: in the original text, it's "Mist Country" but it's either a typo or an outdated information, so I did change it" is short and gives the reader _ALL_ the informations a native Japanese speaker would get from reading the original, which is the primary point of any translation.

Also, I don't like the idea of changing it because following this you HAVE to change the profiles of Hashirama and Tobirama stating their personalities(which are basically reversed compared how they appear later in the manga).
It's a matter of consistency. Either you ALWAYS update your translations to the current known canon, or you ALWAYS keep them as they are in the original.
Anything else means your translation is unreliable.

H-Man

...you do realize I'm not the translator used so far either? I started not too long ago AND never touched the Hokages.

Don't go yelling at me because of that. I just said I got the books and am translating from them.

H-Man said:

Obviously. So?
Now, I'm obviously trusting the previous translation.

But I was using a well known example of outdated information.
If you ever get to the Hokages and find the original text does, in fact, states their personalities as reversed compared to their in-story appearances, by following the same logic Mist Country->Water Country then you HAVE to switch their personality descriptions.

Anything else and you wouldn't be consistent with your own translation, which makes it unreliable.
Don't go yelling at me because of that. I just said I got the books and am translating from them.
Yes, and I'm telling you "translating" doesn't mean "change shit because _I_ think it makes no sense", especially when simple notes resolve any and every problem like this.

H-Man

Random phantom.
...they have personalities in the first databook?

All I see here is "First Hokage was an excellent ninja who got a bunch of ninja together in a forest to found the Hidden Leaf Village and died shortly after that due to living in a time of war" and "Second Hokage was the younger brother, inherited his will, and created the Ninja Academy and the village's organizational structures, then World War Ninja started and he died wishing for the end of wars and for the village to prosper".

That's... not that much personality. No offense.

Knyght

The Collector
It's probably in reference to the second databook where Tobirama's entry says "In contrast to his calm older brother, his nature is to push forward towards his objective with passion and enthusiasm" which somehat contradicts how they are portrayed later in the story.

Now about we drop this freaking unproductive argument, eh? It's been going on for days and has accomplished literally fuck all. Time to move on.

I understand both sides of the argument.

Ankokudaishogun wants a more literal translation, because many things could be lost in translation adaptions. Since these are information books and not stories, these lost nuggets could be important. Case in point, Haku's village could be a separate one from the one most are thinking.

H-man though is following already-established translations. Which, for most translations, it is the expected. If the official translation says the name of James Potter is Thiago in Brazil, for a real Harry Potter example, every brazilian translation needs to translate James to Thiago.

Not exactly. I'm quite fine with the level of literality used by H-man

I just don't want H-man changing the MEANING of something just because he thinks it doesn't make sense AND not telling the readers he did make such a change.
It's not like he has space constraints: as I said a note explaining the difference would be enough.

Without an explanation for the change, if somebody would read the translation comparing it to the original they would think either it's a typo of H-man or H-man is not a reliable translator (you really cannot mix up the kanji for Mist and Water)

Also, the possibility of it NOT being wrong. Maybe Water Country is actually a federation made of many smaller countries, Mist being one of them.
Or maybe it's a confining country.
I am convinced it's just a typo. It's still not a good reason to change it.

Therefore, when in doubt, stick to the original text and add a note about the inconsistencies. It's the most obvious course of action, giving the reader all the informations of the original text so they can firm their own opinion.

I also don't think it's unproductive.
I mean, his reason for change the meaning of a word was "I think it's wrong and I'm not going to tell you this".
It means he could change ANYTHING that doesn't conform to his view of the Naruto-verse... without telling anybody!
How can I trust somebody who does it?
Let me state I believe H-man being in good faith, obviously.

And yes, I had (and keep having) MANY bad experiences with people translating that way. Professionals, not even amateurs.

Ebisu [Rank: Special Jonin, Hidden Leaf]
An elite teacher who learned a valuable lesson with Naruto!

"I was wrong about you..."

He's the elite teacher who trains the Hokage candidates! Ebisu believes he's the best choice to guide one who seeks the Hokage position, and is teaching Ninjutsu to Konohamaru, the Third Hokage's grandson. Asked by Kakashi, he taught Naruto about chakra control. Their second meeting was quite moving (?). Ebisu was quite curious as to Naruto's growth.

^v After realizing Naruto had faced many adversities for wanting to become Hokage, Ebisu learned to respect the boy!

"So's the second."

They are Mist Village ninjas hired by Gatou to murder Tazuna. They perform an incredible combined attack that's only possible because they are twins. They use a special chain, with claws on both ends and blades in every link, to tear their enemies apart and create a true bloodbath. Their attack starts by inhaling and ends by exhaling... it's as if they finished the service within a single breath.

^ The devil brothers' combined attack! They coolly capture and tear the target.

Yoroi Akado [Rank: None, Hidden Sound]
An uncommon power... he absorbs chakra!!

"Hu, hu, hu... you worm!!"

Sound Village spy disguised as a Leaf Village ninja. Specialist in melee combat, he uses his power to steal the opponent's chakra and make them unable to fight. Rank-wise, he's Kabuto's superior, but, since he hasn't done great feats, he feels rather apprehensive.

>v The frightening chakra absorption technique is Yoroi's special ability. He captured Sasuke and stole his energy!

Kin Tsuchi [Rank: None, Hidden Sound]
A sharp blade that hides under the sound of a bell!!

"I'll finish this quickly."

She's the only Hidden Sound Village kunoichi to take part in the Chunin Exam. Cruel and jealous, she was envious of Sakura's silky hair and, during the Chunin Exam's second phase, held her by the hair. In the third phase's preliminary phase, Tsuchi used the Senbon technique, which uses needles with bells whose noise confuses their enemies, but she lost to the intelligent Shikamaru.

A peace alliance that hid an evil plot...!!

"Hidden Leaf Village, eh...?"

The Shinobigashira (ninja leader) of Cloud Village was sent as a representative of the peace alliance between Hidden Leaf and Hidden Cloud, who before lived in opposition. However, the true purpose was to obtain the secrets of the Byakugan, the Hyuuga clan's Kekkei Genkai, and the Shinobigashira tried to kidnap Hinata, the main family's firstborn... but he had no success and was killed by Hiashi.

Giant Snake [Rank: None, Hidden Sound]
A brutal reptile, sharing a blood pact with Orochimaru!

Orochimaru is capable of summoning snakes from the seal carved on his left wrist. These animals are known for their aggressive nature and it's very hard to tame them, but Orochimaru is so powerful he managed to perform this amazing feat!

< The giant snake that suddenly appeared in the forest and swallowed Naruto!
v The three snakes that were in the front lines of the attack against the Hidden Leaf Village. They have cursed marks covering their whole body.
Nobody had done Hinata before? Odd.

No, no, Hinata was one of the few who actually did get a translation (just noticed that Sakura and Minato got one too). How they managed that when Naruto or even Sasuke didn't, I have no idea.

I suppose these are the main ones left that I'm genuinely interested in knowing what could be said: Third Hokage Part 1 & 2, Orochimaru Part 1 & 2. The rest are more minor for me.

Lording it over the ignorant masses, of course.

Yoroi being "disguised as a Leaf ninja" is an interesting phrase since it sounds like he's an infiltrator, not that he's one of their ninja converted into a spy. I think there might have been a mention in the fanbook that implied the same. Which begs the question of how he (and his teammate, I expect) got in there. Slip into the system with perfectly fake records or perhaps replace another person and take over their life?

I don't understand how he's meant to be Kabuto's superior in rank in any way. They're both genin in Konoha and Kabuto is the boss' right hand in Oto. Maybe Kabuto's a bit of a wildcard in terms in rank in his real village because of his unique employment.

Kin's entry was sadly no more informative than the manga. Except that she genuinely envired Sakura's hair? Pink must be her favourite colour.

Written confirmation that Orochimaru's tattoo is a summoning seal. Shame it doesn't explain what the point of it is because he still needs blood and hand-seals, with the extra step of swiping the tattoo as well IIRC. But there's also confirmation that his snake had been branded with the cursed seal too. I was never entirely sure whether the markings might have just been symbolic instead of literally. I'd like to have seen more experiments in that regard.

Wait, I thought the Devil Brothers were missing-nin? Their databook entry makes no mention of them being traitors or working with Zabuza.

Is it possible that the Devil Brothers were actually loyal Mist-nin that Gato hired separately from Zabuza?

I think it's because as far as he knew Kabuto was a new spy while he was an actual, for a while Oto shinobi.

H-Man

Random phantom.
The Demon Bros. don't have scratched forehead protectors, so at least they never went that far. They don't have registry numbers, but neither do any of the Hidden Mist ninjas. And no mention of them with Zabuza.

So yeah, they're treated as a separate team. Maybe they were hired at the same time but without allegiance.

By the way, since I'm not sure if people knew already, but: Naruto's seal is the Shishoufuuin, or the 'Four Bigrams Seal'. What Minato did was overlay two seals at once, creating a seal with eight symbols. So presumably, you can only create four or five at most, for whatever purpose, and overlay them simultaneously to create higher levels.

Altered Nova

Zabuza himself didn't scratch his forehead protector either, weirdly enough.

The Devil Brothers working for Zabuza has been treated as fact by the fans for so long that I'm shocked to see that there isn't any support for it in the databook. How could we all have been wrong about this for so long?

Scratched headbands appears to be a symbol of Akatsuki, not missing-nin in general. Deidara, prior to his recruitment, wore an unscratched headband as well.

When the Demon Brothers lost, Gatou accused Zabuza of failing which implies that they were his partners/subordinates. They also aren't given a rank in the databook.

Strangely, I've just been skimming through the early part of the Wave Arc and I can't see any mention of Zabuza himself being a missing-nin until Haku first appears.
