I'm feeling better enough. Have some Hokage.

Third Hokage [Rank: Hokage, Hidden Leaf]
The greatest commander of all the Hokages and respected as the "master"

"Never forget that, no matter what path you take, you must always protect those important to you."

In action since the Leaf Village's foundation, the Third Hokage has witnessed every change in the village and is considered an icon. He retired once and gave the title away, but took the position once more after the tragic death of the Fourth Hokage. From this and more, he's the Hokage with the longest time exercising this rank. In the last few years, the Third Hokage no longer fought in the frontlines and it was rare for him to have a chance to display his power. He was a true genius, frequently called "master".

Naruto has already tricked him easily with his "Sexy Jutsu". Are women the weak spot of the most genius of ninjas?

He sees all and protects everyone in the village!
A Hokage's mission
He's aware of everything that's going on in the village and protects it – the Third Hokage knows how to do this better than anyone! Despite his kindly old man appearance, he's someone willing to sacrifice his own life to save the village, if necessary.

^ He keeps watch over the happenings of the village with a crystal ball.
> To the Hokage, it's like everyone were part of his family.

Konohamaru
In the last few years, the Hokage's greatest source of happiness and concern is his grandson Konohamaru, a cute and tricky boy who challenges him all the time.

"It's a little concerning that he's with Naruto..."

The Hokage knows Konohamaru acts like this due to being his grandson. Seems like he'd like it if his grandson became a ninja protecting the Leaf Village. In Konohamaru's name, "Konoha" means "leaf", just like the village's name.

v Konohamaru attacks over ten times a day...

He goes off to the battle full of demons for the good of the village!
Master and disciple
When Orochimaru's attack comes, the Third Hokage is forced to fight! The Hokage feels guilt for being unable to lead his ex-disciple down the right path and for not being wise enough to prevent Orochimaru's terrible attack.

v After much time, master and disciple meet once more... Orochimaru plans on toppling the Hidden Leaf Village!
< The Third Hokage faces his two masters – practically a suicidal fight.

Master
Aside from "Master", the Third Hokage has been called "the most powerful of all time" and "genius". Unfortunately, he could not find a fitting successor to pass on his knowledge and techniques.

^ He summoned Enma and, together, they showed excellent attack combinations.

It's a shame that Hiruzen could never find a "fitting successor" to pass on his knowledge and techniques. I guess Jiraiya and Tsunade didn't qualify? He must have very high standards.

Question: what are the kanji used for "Master"?

H-Man

Random phantom.
In Japanese, it's "Professor". All in Katakana.

So why 'Master'? Well, in part, it connects well with the whole 'God of Shinobi' thing I've seen before. He's studied every jutsu he's aware of and know how to perform them. 'Professor' may work due to the implied learning, but it being English makes it partially for the sake of sounding exotic.

'Master' is a synonym used in education systems, usually referring to someone of a higher class of teaching. It would also, admittedly, fit the environment well, since he was a field agent for much of his life.

So this is a Tina/Terra thing. Professor is too scholarly for someone like him and, although he taught the Sannin, it doesn't mean he took or gave formal instructions and it's never said. Master works.

As well as every other ninja of renown who lived during his time. Sakumo, Minato, Itachi...

Reminds me of an idea I once heard where Hiruzen takes on Sasuke as his apprentice.

Edit: Dat hobby.

Professor/Master - unfortunately neither word really works perfectly in American English.

"Professor" communicates his intelligence, expertise and wide range of knowledge, but it's also an academic rank that implies he conducted research and/or taught in classrooms, neither of which seems to actually be the case (he has only three confirmed students who were all his personal apprentices, and he has never invented or improved a jutsu that we know of, unlike all the other Hokage).

"Master", however, is less associated with education systems in America than in Japan. To the average American, the word has more connotations with our nasty history of slavery. Calling someone "Master" just sounds wrong to most Americans.

@knight - Oh jeez, dat hobby indeed. That phrasing could have some really unfortunate implications. Exactly how young were these girls that Hiruzen made a "hobby" out of talking to?

Japanese: "wakaionna no ko". Generally, that would imply 'little girls' [as that's what 'onna no ko' means] but this exact combination is more along the lines of a young woman. So someone in her 20s to 30s.

Still inappropriate for a guy nearing the 70s, but that's why I used 'young'. I guess I'll change that to 'ladies' or 'women' instead.

What Tina\Terra thing?

That said, stop changing shit because you don't LIKE it.
Especially because you makes things more confusing, as "Master" is the common translation for "Shishou".

Also, "Professor" and "Doctor"(and translations) are(to my knowledge) used in sports in Japan(something they got from Europe, it seems), as nicknames for the more technical athletes- which perfectly fits Sarutobi.

Professor/Master - unfortunately neither word really works perfectly in American English.
Luckily, then, this is an international community:p

Tina/Terra is what happened in FF6. Tina is a foreign name to the Japanese but not to the English audience, so instead of the Celestina reference used before, Woolsey chose to create a Terra/Celestial contrast. It was necessary because Terra is a half-human half-Esper being, thus her name's intended to be more exotic.

It's not a matter of 'I don't like it'. It's a matter of 'what works here'.

Ah, I did know they changed the name but didn't got around to look the original(I've yet to start FF6).

Bullshit choice, though.
It's not a matter of 'I don't like it'. It's a matter of 'what works here'.
Except what works and what not is dictated by your personal taste.

Also, it doesn't work. You might want to re-think your approach to translation, so your choices aren't going to bite you in the ass 347 chapters later.

anko, a literal translation is not always the most accurate one. For example, changing Tina's name to Terra. Ted Woolsey (the translator for FF6) was right to make that change. The original developers named that character Tina specifically because the name would sound exotic to a Japanese player. A literal English translation would have kept the name Tina and thus actually became inaccurate to an English speaking player, because the connotations of "this woman is an exotic foreigner" would have been lost on them. The only way to keep true to the spirit of Tina's name was to change her name to something that would sound exotic to an English speaking player, but without sounding drastically different. Terra was a good choice.

That's what H-Man is talking about when he says it's a matter of "what works here." You have to take into consideration what the original author intended when translating their work, because something will usually be lost in translation between languages and cultures no matter how literally accurate the text is.

Now, if there is a specific input on the translation from the original authors, that changes things.
I think simply using Teena or Tyna or any sort of alternative spelling would have worked as well if not better, especially given the in-game contest but as I am not privy to the details it's possible this has been shot down by the original authors or whatever.

The problem with H-man is... he doesn't _HAVE_ input from the author. He CANNOT know what is the "spirit" of the meaning. He has to use HIS interpretation.
Now, when we're talking about broader sentences, given the "implied" nature of the Japanese language, that is sometimes the only way you can translate something.

But with very specific words that have a very specific meaning... that just doesn't cut.
It does happen, that lent-words have got a different meaning from their original: "Bitch" means "Slut", for example.

It's not the case with Professor. So he did change it not because "the world has a different meaning in English" but because "I don't agree with what it might or might not imply".

I'm quite jelly because this is _EXACTLY_ the line of thinking that landed quite horrible translations here in Italy. Don't become a Bassanelli, H-man!

H-Man

It HAS a different meaning in English like you yourself stated. Professor isn't used in English to refer to highly technical athletes as far as I'm aware of.

So the last part I needed to do.

Attacking the Hidden Leaf Village – A terrible symphony orchestrated in a threatening fashion!

Prelude
Orochimaru stole the faces of the Grass Village ninjas to infiltrate the Chunin Exam, which happened in the Hidden Leaf Village, and stealthily took action in the Forest of Death. His objective was Sasuke, the Uchiha clan heir, once considered the best clan of the entire village. The ambitious predator advances!

^ He could not hide his nature before the blood in the Forest of Death.

Nightmare
Orochimaru plays with Sasuke and tests the boy's power. It was only the start of his terrible plan...

> The real function of the cursed mark left on Sasuke's neck has yet to be revealed.

The mysterious whereabouts of the Hidden Grass Village ninjas...
The whereabouts of the two Hidden Sound Village ninjas who infiltrated with Orochimaru, disguised as Hidden Grass Village ninjas, is unknown.

< There were three corpses total. The other two accomplices must be hidden somewhere.

Purpose
After the second phase of the Chunin Exam, the evil shadow became denser. Orochimaru acted in the background with Kabuto, his right arm. Meanwhile, the village was in alert due to Orochimaru's presence. The purposes mixed up and the plot went on... The terrible plan, capable of devastating the world, came into action!

^ Kabuto is a spy and is involved in the plot...
^ The Uchiha clan and the Hidden Sound Village... What are Orochimaru's true intentions?

The Leaf Village Trembles!
During the last and main phase of the Chunin Exam, Orochimaru's plan reached its climax under the gaze of the participating villages' elites. It's revealed that the Kazekage, having attacked the Hokage, was, in fact, Orochimaru in disguise! To what point will Orochimaru lead his ambitious plan to dominate the village?

v Identity revealed... The ambitious Orochimaru shows his fangs!
^ Master against disciple. The sky roared and the ground split. A battle without precedents has begun!
There. Done for now.

Whoah. I literally never noticed this inconsistency before. All three of those Grass genin were murdered and had their faces melted off. Who the heck were Orochimaru's accomplices who helped him impersonate that Grass Village team, and what ever happened to them? The next time we see Orochimaru he's alone. They just kind of disappeared and were never mentioned again.

He did say something like "leave them to me", at least in the anime.
I always assumed it was the Sound Four pretending to be just two, just like they did as the Kazekage's bodyguards in the invasion.

H-Man

Random phantom.
Probable answer, if that's true: two of them were in disguise and hid in the Forest of Death until the assault, then two more joined him as his bodyguards later, and they met up in time for the battle.

Weird that he treats them as a mystery when the Sound Four's already revealed and as if these accomplices were ever going to matter.

I was really hoping for more details on how exactly Yagura controlled his bijuu perfectly. Is he just that badass that he beat Isobu into submission in a battle-in-the-center-of-the-mind style training session similar to Bee and Naruto? Did he befriend Isobu? Was his perfect control over Isobu actually a result of Obito's mind control, which was also controlling Isobu?

Altered Nova

Well-Known Member
Personally I'm gonna go with "Obito controlled them both so it just looked like he was a perfect jinchuuriki to others." Because Yagura and Isobu didn't exactly give off the impression that they were bestest buddies and Yagura's battle prowess wasn't *that* impressive when he was revived as a zombie.

Also, exactly how old is Yagura??? Pretty much his sole character establishing moment in the manga was when he lost his temper at Naruto's assumption about his age and angrily asserted that he was an adult. Which made it seem like he was older than he looked and correcting people about that was probably a regular issue.

But this short databook entry really emphasizes his youth! And it doesn't list an age for him damnit! So which is it? Is he a bizarrely young looking adult or a young teenager?
