Of course the advances made by the 2nd game do up the Gears' capabilities; particularly if your allowed the right mix of Heavy Gatling Laser Cannons and Heavy Guided Mortars with high end fire control+sniping systems. B) At that point your gear in a HIGHLY mobile artilery platform of doom that can rapid snipe like crazy.
It's a matter of fitting them into a role. Gears are smaller and more agile than tanks so they are used for fighting in built up areas and rough terrain. They also function as scouts and fast strike units. In a stand up fight, tanks can carry more armour and weapons, being considerably larger. But Gears are cheaper individually. A light tank costs around 3/4 million as opposed to 1/4 for a basic Gear.
That's kind of a yes/no answer. On one hand you're piloting a bleeding edge super Gear that, again, with some of the stats pushed up high is really, really tough, fast, stealthy, and has superior range and sensors to tanks that are somewhat outdated. A good tank troop with weapons designed to take out the current generation of Gears, like HGLC of their own, could easily be a super threat in a stand up fight. My favorite loadout is never allowed in the single player campaign as its stats/weapons rank at too high a threat value, damn arbitery difficulty/limit. Really if I get to customize the Gear to my own standards then only another human player is a difficulty; I shred the comp opponetts in multi even if I give them the same Gear I'm using and they come in 10 waves of 5.

His left hand above his forehead, he yanked it down, causing a bone-white mask with three faces to appear over his face, turning his blue eyes to yellow and black.
ôIs that AdamÆs likeness on the right side of it?ö asked Rei.
Shinji nodded.
ôAnd is that Lilith on the left?ö
He nodded again.
ôWhy?ö she asked.
He just shrugged, as he held the sword before him. ôNow, I just need a volunteer,ö he stated, his voice sounded darker.
That was the moment Sachiel and the JSSDF appeared over a nearby hillside.
Chuckling, a sadistic gleam came to ShinjiÆs black eyes. ôRun away, Trayectorias Gemelas, Dilema del Erizo!ö

ôUnknown pattern detected!ö Makoto yelled out, as a tower of black energy appeared before the approaching Angel.
ôWhat is it?ö cried out one of the Generals, wanting answers immediately.
ôUnknown pattern, MAGI are unable to classify!ö yelled Maya, tapping away frantically. ôThey can only state that itÆs output is constantly rising!ö
As the Generals began to bicker among themselves, Gendo Ikari remained focused on the pulsating column of black energy that even had the Angel mesmerized, preferring to stare and ponder, rather than open his mouth.
ôWell,ö Fuyutsuki spoke up, ôthis wasnÆt in the scrolls.ö
ôNo; no, it was not,ö Gendo replied.

As the energy died down, Rei could only smile, even as her clothes began to give up the fight to remain whole after the ferocious blast of wind. SheÆd been tempted to use her AT-Field to protect herself à but where was the fun in that?
Her senses made her look up as the column began to fade, finally revealing what had once been Shinji Ikari. Though the figure now floated over thirty meters in the air, she couldnÆt sense any energy she was familiar withùeven after her jaunt across the multiverse. His body was larger, at least three meters tall, nearly all white, spikes protruding from his arms, legs, back, and some of his head. Where his mask had covered it all before, his lower face was now revealed. The main face on the mask had shifted, the nose becoming somewhat more pronounced.
Oh yes, he also had a gaping circular hole in his chest. CouldnÆt forget that. But seeing this beast which was already making several pilots in the JSSDF crafts wet themselves in fear, only one thought came to ReiÆs mind.
ôOoo~oooh! HeÆs so cute! I wanna hug him and pet him and name him George!ö
Growling, the beast looked at the Angel before it à and smiled. In a flash, he disappeared, a speed even Rei found herself hard-pressed to follow.
So did Sachiel à until its leg impacted the Angel in its bird-like face, sending the behemoth shooting backwards nearly a kilometer before it finally smashed into the ground.
ôThatÆs one,ö ShinjiÆs sinister voice stated, glaring at the Angel from across the distance. ôI shall strike three times to finish you. You have till them to stop me.ö
Enraged at this new beingÆs assault, Sachiel rose, darting towards the creature as fast as his form would allow, hands reaching out to grab the annoying offender from the air and crush it in its bare hands.
Sadly, it forgot the spikes covering Shinji. ôTwo, Shinji responded, as the spikes shot outwards, expanding in size and length till a point of nearly ten meters out from his body, sending the Angel screaming as it tried to release the captured being, now finding that it was the one now trapped.
ôI donÆt have time to play anymore,ö Shinji stated, a single hand ripping itself free of the ruptured flesh of the Angel, pointing towards the AngelÆs face and SachielÆs core. ôMy ride will be here soon, and IÆd rather not explain this right now.
ôGoodbye. May your siblings who follow you actually make me work for a victory.
ôSangre Cero.ö With that, a small ball of dark-blood red light formed at the end of his index finger and flashed, enveloping the top portion of Sachielùincluding most of his coreùand vaporizing it and anything behind him.

She was scared, having witnessed such power, especially after the beast then gave a roar that chilled her soul, and vanished from sight. Soon afterwards, the strange energy pattern vanished before the MAGI could restore a lock on it.
ôIkari, if this is one of yoursàö one of the Generals responded, looking up towards the head of NERV.
ôCalm down, Tai,ö one of the others muttered, lighting another cigaretteùdespite not even being a meter from a sign proclaiming NERV to be a smoke-free environment. ôIf it was IkariÆs, he would have waited until we played out our trump card.ö
Gendo simply closed his eyes. Oh, he wasnÆt going to like having to deal with SEELE about this. Hopefully, some security footage from the area could be acquired. He would not have such a power running loose without his control.

He looked over at the Third Angel before smirking in a "I have an idea so stupid it's brilliant" way and responding, "Try to walk, got it, Misato."
Shinji then proceeded to take a half dozen uncertain steps before the EVA's gait grew steady and he stood all but face to face with the attacking Angel.
"That's it, Shinji. Now, you have a Progressiv- WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" Misato deamnded suddenly frantic.
The reason for her concern was Evangelion 01, which had carefully stepped out of the way of the approaching Angel with a bow and a gesture of invitation toward NERV with its right hand.
Shinji's grin was downright malicious as he replied, "Backing the winner. I said I would pilot the monster that killed my mother, Misato. I never said anything about helping you or the bastard that spawned me. Besides, this is the Third Angel and I'm the Third Child. We Third's have to stick together. Tell Gendo I'll see him in Hell. Finally, the time had come for the arrival of Sachiel, the Third Angelùat least in this Loop. As usual, he JSSDF was attempting to stop it through the usual method of assuming it could only kill so many before it fell.
As always, it wasnÆt working.
ôPrepare to send in the Third through Sixth Armored Divisions!ö yelled one of the trio of Generals near him, commanding the assault from within NERV.
Shinji just gave them a pitying glare. The whole point of the TRIDENT project had been an alternative to NERV and the Evangelion series. However, now that the time had come to confront the Angels, they were choosing to waste lives in the belief that a lucky shot would get through, rather than use the systems that they had authorized billions on to use for just the situation.
Was it any wonder he rarely tried to go Military in any Loop? ôGentlemen, may I remind youùyet againùthat instead of fighting in a manner you know will not succeed, that you actually authorize the TRIDENTs to engage.ö
The trio turned to him, sneering, even as the lit up new cigarettes, before focusing once again on the screen.
ôAs if we would trust a wet-behind-the-ears brat,ö muttered the one in the middle.
ôMay I remind you, General Hitomi, that this brat,ö Shinji stated, pushing his Gendo-like glasses up his nose slightly, ôtook out two assassination teams by himself, plus a rogue group of JSSDF personnel under the belief that my continued existence after I had finished the TRIDENT construction designs, was a threat to the Greater Good.
ôThis is a group I am continuing to investigate, so I can visit their Fate upon the fools who supported them,ö he finished, knowing exactly who had authorized those Black Op attempts to end his existence.
Amazingly, they dwindled after he informed the brass that should he cease to live, the TRIDENT series main AIs would also cease functioning, leaving the JSSDF with three trillion yen paperweights.
Imagine that.

The screen went white for a second as the Angel began its counter-attack.
ôI must agree with you, General,ö Shinji stated, wishing he wasnÆt forced to wear his plugsuit under his lab coatùin case his ætoysÆ failed, according to Gendo. ôI have learned this day how little you value the lives and resources invested in your forces.ö
Growing tired of the display of military intelligenceùbut mainly wanting to show the superiority of the TRIDENTs to GendoÆs half-mad cyborgs, Shinji tapped a single button. ôMana, engage target, Battle Plan Alpha-3.ö
ôRoger,ö was the cheerful female voice that came over the Comm.
ôWe did not authorize this!ö yelled General Sachio.
ôIÆm sorry; I thought we were ordered to win with minimal damage and loss of life,ö Shinji stated in a deadpan voice. ôForgive me for disturbing your plan to have the highest number of dead troops in a single military engagement before your enforced retirement.ö
Ignoring their growls, Shinji turned slightly, looking at his personally hired Merc, a former Russian Spetsnaz who would only respond to the Codename: Bear. ôA question?ö
The Russian nodded, before speaking in flawless Japanese. ôOnly one?ö
ôMy researches into the Angels have indicated a gestalt mind of some sort, those that follow will learn from the mistakes of their fallen brothers. As such, IÆd rather not use all three TRIDENTs unless called for, in case a simply 2-on-1 battle is all we need to defeat one.ö
The Merc simply nodded, before turning back to the Viewer. ôThey will not like you usurping their authority.ö
ôIt will mean little when they are drummed out of the positions they occupy when this battle and their tactics become public knowledge.ö
Bear just chuckled. Oh yes, the kid was good.

That glare grew slightly and became filled with shock as the robot used a gun that looked like part of a tank, firing rounds that not only hit the target, but passed through the AT Field of the Angel and ripped huge chunks of flesh off it.
ôIn case you were wondering, Commander Ikari,ö Shinji stated, ôI also developed Anti-AT technology in the forms of not only personal combat between TRIDENT and an Angel, but close weaponry as well.ö True, SEELE had developed it first in the cloned Lances.
However, Shinji had miniaturized it for giant-sized small arms.
Ritsuko stood near him, biting her lower lip to keep from moaning at the underage pilot/scientist who seemed to wield more power than Gendo, then making a mental note to have her shrink up their schedule to three times a week. This power fetish of hers was obviously getting worse.
ôAnd why was this not shared with us?ö demanded Misato.
Shinji just stared at her. ôOne, I was not contracted to share such technology with NERV. Two, I donÆt trust your leadership to keep a fart under wraps,ö he replied.

ôI was never contracted to develop such,ö Shinji stated, watching as Mana and TRIDENT-01 finished killing off Sachiel. ôAnd before you demand, I have already ensured that such technology cannot be used without my consent and permission.ö
The Generals growled, but said nothing else, knowing all too well what and how the young Ikari would react if they insisted.
Shinji just smiled internally, wondering how much longer it would take him before NERV either had to get some corporate sponsors à or simply faded away.
That reminds me, I really need to get back to assassinating the SEELE members. Ah, where has the time goneà And best of all, since TRIDENT was proving so effective, the Evangelions would never see combat, and thus his fatherÆs precious scenario was all but ruined.
