Addendum to shadow clone theories (nixofcyzerra)

RE: The Naruversity

Addendum to any and all Shadow Clone theories posted in this thread:

Actually forming a Shadow Clone barely takes any chakra at all, provided that the amount of chakra currently flowing through the user's circulatory system is low. It's the clone or clones causing your chakra to be used up two to several times faster than normal that's the real danger of the technique.

Evidence:

Kakashi was almost out of stamina, but was still able to summon up a horde of clones. However, due to having used up almost all of his stamina, Kakashi was bluffing. He only had enough left for the clones to stand there and look menacing. If the clones had tried to move at ninja speed or use Jutsu, then Kakashi would have had to either dispel the clones, or die of chakra exhaustion about three seconds later.

The real question is: When Kakashi dispelled the technique, did he only get back the chakra that was flowing through the clone's circulatory system, and have the clone's memories copied into his cerebral cortex (or the parts of it that handle the different kinds of memories*) via the parts of the circulatory system that interact with the cerebral cortex, or did he also get back the chakra involved in the construction of the clones?

Because if it's the latter, then Shadow Clone is essentially a no-cost jutsu, provided the produced clones don't do anything.

*Sensory memory/Short-Term (working) memory/Episodic Declarative Long Term memory/Semantic Declarative Long-Term Memory/Procedural Long-Term memory. And that's ignoring the important alternative classification of long-term memory used by some researchers, Restrospective Long-Term and Prospective Long-Term memory. Say, can you tell that I studied Psychology for a few years?

Oh, and as I posted in the Miscellaneous idea topic here, I think the Akatsuki rings were made out of Nagato's manifested chakra receivers, and that's how the Magic Lantern Body Technique works.

I think I touched on that during the discussion after posting the Shadow Clone Training Method. Hadn't thought to relate it to Kakashi's little trick though.

Doubt it. I'd bet that only the chakra that's been split comes back to the original (and other clones); the chakra used to create the clone, maintain its existence and fuel its actions would be the 'permanent' cost of the jutsu.

Ah, so you did. Actually knight, I've got no problem with you editing your post to cite these pages if you want. It would make for a better reference, and easier linking from the first post.

Yeah, that did sound a little too broken. Do you think the exploding shadow clone involves converting the chakra used in the construction of the clone into an explosion, in additon to the chakra in the clone's circulatory system? Sort of like if a Kage Bunshin used all of it's chakra to henge into an explosion.

Indeed I do. ^_^

Though I forgot I even made that post until now. A random thought I had it about it some time ago was that explosion might basically be an amplified version of how clones burst into smoke as a way to explain how a shadow clone might explode without the use of fire or explosive chakra. By sacrificing the chakra that composes the clone, that 'poof' turns into a 'boom'.

The "Restoration" power of the Naraka Path (nixofcyzerra)

The "Restoration" power of the Naraka Path.

Naruto Wiki said:
In Buddhism, the Naraka realm, or "hell realm", is a plane of rebirth, based on Karma (actions of body, speech, and mind) built up in a previous life or lives. There are various Naraka, each containing beings that are tormented until their Karma has achieved its full and satisfactory results. The beings can then be reborn into a higher plane.
Based off of this, my concept of the Naraka Path's restoration is that it is not anything so mundane as healing, but instead the literal shedding of Karma (actions of body, speech, and mind.) As such, the Naraka's Path restoration could be considered a reversal of Entropy, the subject being restored to a prior state, being released from the burdens the material world has laden them with. Hence why even clothing can be restored to a pristine state.

While this may seem like an unimportant distinction, as it makes little difference to a Path of Pain, if an injured Shinobi were to be placed within the King of Hell, they would emerge as they were prior to the injury both physically and mentally. That is to say, the time between the moment of their injury and their emergence from the King of Hell would no longer exist for them. Which can be an issue if they learnt something interesting or vital after being injured.

Creating the Elements and Controlling the Elements (Knyght)

Creating the Elements and Controlling the Elements (Official Version)

There are two methods of using elemental ninjutsu. One is to use the elemental chakra directly and the other is to control the pre-existing element with elemental chakra. A clear example of these methods in practice is Earth Release: Earth Style Wall which can be created by spitting out a mass of earth from the ninja's body which rises up into a wall or by controlling the ground beneath the ninja to make it rise up into a wall.

The first method transforms the ninja's chakra into an element, shapes and releases it. It has the advantage of allowing the ninja to use any elemental ninjutsu anywhere (within reason) but costs more chakra.

The second method transforms the ninja's chakra into an element, melds it with a preexisting mass of the corresponding element, then shapes and releases that. It has the advantage of requiring less chakra because the substance composing it is already available but it can only be used when the natural element is within reach of the user's chakra. And it has the benefit of being a useful counter to chakra absorption since it is harder to absorb chakra from real material than to absorb chakra directly which also, if necessary, allows the user to continually supply their jutsu with chakra to maintain its form, strength and/or movement.

Fire and lightning jutsu almost exclusively uses the first method because of their lack of abundance in nature. Wind jutsu almost exclusively uses the second method because its element exists practically everywhere. And earth and water jutsu are mix of the two because their elements can be found in large expanses but isn't always available.

However, it's possible to use both methods at the same time such as by controlling a pre-existing mass of earth but also increasing its quantity with more chakra. Earth Release: Earth-Style Rampart is one such example of this in action.

Addendum: When an elemental ninjutsu is created entirely from chakra, the jutsu's effects will fade when the chakra dissipates. When an elemental ninjutsu is created using a preexisting element, the jutsu's effects will remain even when the chakra dissipates. When Earth Release: Earth Style Wall creates a wall entirely from earth chakra, that wall will eventually crumble into dust as the chakra composing it dissipates. When Earth Release: Earth Style Wall creates a wall by controlling the ground, the wall will remain in place even when the chakra used to make it dissipates unless the caster or someone else restores it to its original state.

It's also worth mentioning that controlling a pre-existing element with chakra has another advantage in that chakra absorbing techniques can't completely counter your ninjutsu.

For example, While Madara can absorb Oonoki's Dust Release and also absorbed Mei's Water Bullet Dragon and A's lightning chakra, he couldn't stop Gaara's sand. The difference being that all the other Kages' jutsu were pure chakra but Gaara creates his sand by breaking up the ground and controlling the particles with chakra.

RE: The Naruversity

Now I wonder at the specifics of that. Is just harder to absorb chakra from real material so Gaara could gather sand faster than Madara could rob it of its chakra, is it not actually possible to absorb it from real material so Madara could only absorb the lightning water dragon or was Gaara just fueling his sand with more chakra in response to keep it clinging to Madara as he continued to gather more? Or something else?

Because while the real material would still be there even without the chakra, it should be left formless and inert. Rob the chakra from the sand and it would just be swept away by water since Gaara's will would no longer keep it clinging to Madara.

An earthen barrier, rising up in an instant!!

This ninjutsu defends oneself against an incoming attack by creating a solid wall of earth. Chakra is converted to earth within the body and then spit out. This earth then instantly rises up and takes form. The barrier itself is also coated with chakra, making its strength incomparable to that of a normal mud wall. Because of the earth's special characteristics, the wall is highly resistant against, for instance, fire and water. Also, for a Hokage-class shinobi it is possible to create a vast volume of earth...!!

Indeed, the high-speed waterball attack possesses just as much power to kill and main as an actual gunshot!! While this is a Suiton jutsu, it can still be employed someplace where no water is available, which is a great advantage. It's also possible to increase the power of destruction of the balls themselves by building up the chakra inside of them.

NEW THEORY!:

Many who have made a habit of casually studying the theory behind Ninjutsu have quickly made the observation that the five basic chakra natures, Fire, Water, Earth, Wind and Lightning, can be divided into two groups:

The first group: those that are primarily offensive, Fire (the only element of the basic 5 that lacks a secondary characteristic,) Lightning (secondary characteristic: "Piercing,") and Wind (secondary characteristic: "Cutting.")

And the second group: those which are equally well-suited to offence and defence, Water (secondary characteristic: "manipulation of pressure, i.e., low pressure bubbles* and mists, and high-pressure fast-moving water") and Earth (secondary characteristic: "manipulation of material properties, i.e., Hard/Soft + Heavy/Light.")

Those who have made a more serious, in-depth study of Ninjutsu theory have noticed another difference between the first and second groups: The elements that belong to the latter are more "Realistic," and are more aligned with the laws of physics, mimicking the element in question better. Fire Jutsu are not stifled by a low Oxygen environment, although obviously the normal fire that their heat ignites is. Lightning Jutsu are both far slower and far less powerful than actual Lightning, and don't touch upon the magnetic aspect of the electromagnetic spectrum (as Sarutobi Hiruzen was quite disappointed to discover after failing to develop a Lightning Release Rail-gun Jutsu.) Wind Jutsu users cannot even manipulate the air that is all around them.

Compare this to Suiton Jutsu, which conduct electricity, and Doton, which a clever user of could partially (or even totally) protect themselves from a mid-to-long distance Raiton Jutsu by coating themselves in mud, as said Raiton Jutsu tend to be cast over a wide area and thus can be further diffused by mud easily (although Lightning's secondary characteristic of "Piercing" means that almost any attempt to use Earth Release to defend against particularly concentrated Lightning Jutsu (of any range) is certain to fail.

The question of course, is why Water and Earth-natured chakra is "more realistic" than the other three? While this is heavily disputed at the highest levels of Ninjutsu academia, the answer is relatively straightforward: Water and Earth are the only two basic elements that have the ideal form which they mimic found within the Human Body. The Human body is approximately 65% water, and all of the most common minerals and chemical elements found in Earth are also found within the human body to some degree.

This is not to say that a Shinobi who spits out a flow of Earth is drawing upon the minerals in his body to actually construct the Doton chakra, as if that were the case then creating even the smallest quantity of Earth-natured chakra would prove invariably fatal. Instead, tiny traces of the minerals are used up as a template to improve the "quality" of the element imitation, minerals that can easily be replenished through correct nutrition.

A similar concept is used with the Toad Oil Bullet used by Jiraiya, and the Poison Mist technique utilised by Senju Tsunade's senior apprentice Shizune.

Unfortunately, utilising this same method with Water Release techniques can be dangerous. While replenishing minerals is possible through a mineral-rich diet, using water in the same method can extract Intracellular fluid, Extracellular fluid, Blood plasma, Interstitial (tissue) fluid, or Transcellular fluid. Unless one possesses great skill with Water Release, it is possible to inflict tremendous damage to one's own cells with higher-ranked Water Jutsu.

In one extreme case, a foolish Genin with above-average stamina attempted to cast a high-level Water Jutsu without correct supervision or having even learnt Water Transformation, and ended up causing damage to himself similar to that inflicted by Pakura of Suna's Scorch Release: Extremely Steaming Murder.

The differences in the variations of Magnet Release can also be explained by this concept. The Earth chakra that is combined with Wind to form Jinton varies by the different users using a higher proportion of a specific mineral found in the body. Gaara, after having Shukaku extracted, used a higher proportion of "Silicon-Earth chakra" to create and manipulate existing sand (and started getting cravings for Bananas and Raisins, silicon-rich foods, without really knowing why.) The Third Kazekage used a higher proportion of Iron (and only his personal Med-nin knew he initially frequently suffered from Iron-deficiency anemia until he radically changed his diet.)

Toroi used the standard proportions, without really focusing on a specific chemical element, and thus his Magnet Release techniques were a tad... underwhelming, while the 4th Kazekage Rasa discovered a way to use a diamagnetic form of Magnet Release, allowing him to manipulate Gold, a metal that is both non-magnetic and not found in significant quantities within the human body. The third Kazekage is widely considered to be the strongest Kazekage, but Rasa was, unknown to most, the most skilled with Magnet Release.

*And I would advise any who mock the unique form of Water Release utilised by the various Jinchuuriki of the Six-tailed Slug to study the concept of "Supercavitation."

I would say the former. The Preta Path is really fast at absorbing chakra. That Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan Jiraiya made was massive, after all.

Preta Path could absorb the chakra right out of Naruto's body through physical touch, so Madara should be able to take the chakra out of the sand. But's it probably a slower process than absorbing pure freestanding chakra so Gaara was likely adding more chakra to the sand faster than Madara could pull it out.

Had a thought. The Preta Path's Blocking Technique Absorption Seal works by absorbing the chakra of a Jutsu and "dispersing it within one's body by spinning the chakra within one's body in the opposite direction."

That collaboration Lightning Water Dragon Bullet is two basic natures used simultaneously. But Gaara's sand is an Advanced Element comprised of Wind (probably) and "Silicon-Earth" (if the theory in my immediately prior post is correct.)

Perhaps the Blocking Technique Absorption Seal takes a little longer to break down Advanced Elements, in addition to the other factors.

RE: The Naruversity

If that were the case then it probably would have been impossible for Madara to absorb Dust Release techniques quickly enough to avoid being hit, seeing as how it is a super advanced element comprised of three different basic elements.

Great theory by the way, it's a nice edition to my headcanon. Although I got one question - if the different kinds of magnet release are explained by the user mimicking different types of minerals/metals with the earth half of the advanced element, then are the different types of lava releases explained the same way? Does that mean that only advanced elements involving earth chakra can have such variations?

And how would you explain jutsu such as Water Release: Starch Syrup Capture Field? Is Izumo using sugar water as the template for his jutsu instead of regular water?

Finally, how does this concept explain Jiraiya's Toad Oil Bullet and Shizune's Poison Mist? Neither of them are listed as elemental jutsu in the databooks.

RE: The Naruversity

The same way one can explain Asuma's Katon: Haisekishō(the ash technique), I guess.
Yamato told us using two elements isn't a problem, the problem being mixing them to make a new one.
Both techniques probably are mostly Fire(and Water) techniques but employ a "secondary" minor element manipulation to tweak their effect.

Also, actually, Fire's secondary characteristic is "Supercharging". I'm quite sure it was stated in Databook #2 or #3, where elements were explained.

I would say it's complicated enough that Madara would have to "up" the absorption rate of the Blocking Technique Absorption Seal by focusing his chakra further, seeing as Onoki's massive Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique that destroyed the twenty-five wood clones of Madara (all using Susanoo) also destroyed part of Madara's body. If the Susanoos were about equal in durability, and considering how tough Mokuton wood is, if Onoki's dust can pulverise them, Edo Madara should have been reduced to dust too. The only way of explaining that I can think of is that Madara couldn't get his Preta power up to a high enough "level" fast enough to avoid taking damage.

Thanks. And I would say that of the four seen versions of Lava Release:

Son Goku's Lava is just Earth superheated by Fire (Duh.)

Iwagakure's Quicklime Lava Release would probably involve isolating "Calcium-chakra" and "Oxygen-chakra" from Earth and adding Fire to it until it you get "Quicklime (Calcium Oxide/CaO) chakra." Maybe as an intermediate step they make "Limestone(CaCO3)-chakra" first and then heat it further. Frankly, Iwa having that form of Lava Release makes sense to me, as you'd expect the Hidden Stone Village in the Land of Earth to have the best knowledge of Geology. Though it's also quite probable that they have no idea how it works, only that it does, and they just figured it out through screwing around with it.

Maybe there was an extensive breeding program to spread the Yōton blood-line limit around as much as possible, and hundreds of Iwa Shinobi have experimented with it, most of whom came up with useless variations. Maybe Kurotsuchi learnt how to use "Chalk Release" from someone who was very embarrassed about their useless Jutsu, and she then figured out through experimentation how to make "Limestone Release" instead, followed shortly by Quicklime.

Similar concept for Dodai of Kumo. Natural rubber is a polymer of isoprene, which is two lots of "C5H8." So Dodai or his teacher come up with "Natural Rubber Release," using Earth, and then later added "Sulpher-chakra" from Earth and heat from Fire to vulcanise it.

As for Mei... It's supposed to be some kind of acid with the consistency of syrup. If I had to guess, I'd say it's "Wet process Phosphoric Acid Release." You make WPA by adding to Sulpheric Acid to Tricalcium phosphate, and it's both more viscous and denser than regular Phosphoric Acid. It's a very complicated chemical. Mei's not just a pretty face. I imagine she might have spent a good portion of the rebellion against Yagura locked up in a chemist lab. Might even explain some of her relationship worries ("Men don't like Women who are smart!")

As for her acidic Boil Release: Skilled Mist Technique, Water Release don't produce pure/distilled water, as otherwise they wouldn't conduct Lightning Jutsu, so I guess she isolates the "pseudo-chemical impurities" in her Water Transformation and uses Fire Transformation to form some kind of highly corrosive acidic vapour.

Holy Crap. Either Mei's a freaking genius, or whoever taught her was. I wonder if her/their research involved studying Saiken's alkali.

Does that mean that only advanced elements involving earth chakra can have such variations?
I'd say that Earth's definitely the easiest, but Wind could also do some stuff. I mean, air, or the atmosphere of the Earth is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.039% carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases.

So maybe if the Naruto-verse's atmosphere is comparable, and Wind release accurately mimics the different gases and their ratios, then perhaps someone who's an absolute genius with Wind Transformation could isolate the "Nitrogen-chakra" aspect of it, and combine it with the same cooling aspect that Haku used to make ice, on a much grander scale, to create "Liquid Nitrogen Release."

Though I'm not sure whether even Tsunade or Orochimaru's knowledge of chemistry is sufficient to even be able to conceive the idea of it being possible, as Nitrogen was first liquefied in 1883, whereas all the early civilizations used Limestone, Vulcanised Rubber was discovered in 1839, but as the Naruto-verse has rubber (Rasengan training,) Dodai or his teacher probably figured out how to use Earth Release to replicate it, and just then added "Sulpher-chakra" and Fire, and Mei's awesome and may have studied the composition of Saiken's alkali.

Fire's just an exothermic reaction, Lightning is either positively or negatively charged ions, and Water, Earth and Wind I've already covered.

Actually, if Wind and Earth have Carbon and Nitrogen, Water and Earth have Hydrogen, and all three have Oxygen, and Earth also has Phosphorus, and Sulfur, that would mean that Hyoton has CHON, and all advanced elements involving Earth has CHNOPS (info also on the provided link.)

So of the four most potentially broken Bloodlines Mokuton, Jinton, Yoton and Hyoton... one's gone extinct and one's an aberration that's only shown itself in Hashirama (and Yamato,) depending on whether Zetsu got Mokuton from Hashirama or, somehow, Hashirama got Mokuton from Zetsu.

...Well, that kind of sucks. No matter what kind of advanced "Chemistry Release" Jutsu are invented in the future, it's going to be difficult to make many that involves cooling, due to Hyoton being gone, so they'll have to rely on Jinton.

And how would you explain jutsu such as Water Release: Starch Syrup Capture Field? Is Izumo using sugar water as the template for his jutsu instead of regular water?
According to the 3rd Databook, "High-viscosity, chakra-mixed water is spit out, aimed at a surface of wide scope." So, Shape Transformation?

Finally, how does this concept explain Jiraiya's Toad Oil Bullet and Shizune's Poison Mist? Neither of them are listed as elemental jutsu in the databooks.
No, I mean about the "tiny traces of the minerals are used up as a template" bit. Jiraiya/Shizune have tiny portions of Oil/Poison in their bloodstream or something, as use it as a template to produce "pseudo-chakra versions" on a much larger scale.

No, Asuma's Jutsu involves producing "chakra-altered gunpowder" (I imagine in the same way Jiraiya and Shizune produce Oil and Poison) and then igniting it with flint a placed in his molars. I thought so too. But according to the Databook Entry:

Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning (火遁・灰積焼, Katon: Haisekishou)
Ninjutsu, B-rank, Offensive, Mid-range (5-10m)
User: Sarutobi Asuma

Blocking one's field of vision is an ashen-grey formation
Turned into a burst of flames with live coals!!

Chakra-altered gunpowder is scattered in the surrounding region and ignited with a flint placed in one's molars beforehand!! The area where the gunpowder is scattered is swallowed up in a large explosion. This technique demands keen senses to read the air currents, the insight to read the enemy's movements, and the tactical experience to not also enfold one's allies in the flames.

[picture of Asuma blowing gunpowder from his mouth]
[picture of the gunpowder exploding in front of Shikamaru, Izumo, and Kotetsu]
↑→It explodes in just an instant, destroying the surroundings with fire. Careful attention is vital for the ignition's timing.
Not so much. I guess maybe he uses stored gunpowder as a template to create "pseudo-chakra gunpowder," then infuses it with Fire-natured chakra to "supercharge" it, as you mentioned Fire's secondary characteristic was. And then because he can't supercharge, then ignite with Fire Transformation, only being able to do either one or both simultaneously, he uses a flint in his tooth to ignite the Gunpowder.

RE: The Naruversity

It's just called "explosive powder" in the official trans. "Explosive powder created by altering chakra..."

Here's the full entry for Nature Transformation in DB3:

The five chakra natures are the foundation of ninjutsu. Change in chakra nature is at the foundation of ninjutsu and is essential in the development of new jutsu. The particulars are recorded here.

In the course of using ninjutsu, when one adds Fire and Wind elements to chakra to increase effectiveness, that is known as change in chakra nature. While it depends on the person, most individuals can tap into one chakra nature easily. At the jounin level, most can use two or more.

Fire: Chakra as hot as fire, with the power to burn anything it touches. It can turn its target into flames and, like Wind, is especially suited to offensive attacks.

Wind: Chakra as sharp as a blade which can cut and tear anything in its path. It is used for speciality ninja weapons and jutsu and is most effective in short to mid-range distances.

Lightning: It diffuses easily and is compatible with mid-to-long distance jutsu. Adding it to metal weapons makes them more lethal and increases the electrical shock.

Earth: It increases the solidity and composition of all things. A master can make steel unbreakable and clay more pliable. It can be applied to jutsu and other things.

Water: It is compatible with the multiple-faceted change in chakra form. As in creating fog to camouflage oneself, or a tsunami wave to obstruct something, it is effective for defensive purposes.

It is important to know your nature type before starting to train. Generally, chakra is sent through a chakra kanoshi and the changes are observed. For example, Wind will cut through the paper. Lightning will make creases in it.

In order to master change in chakra nature, one must undergo special training in each elemental nature. For Wind change in chakra nature, there are three levels. One: to strengthen the nature. Two: to increase the amount of change. Three: to merge it with a jutsu. Mastery of all natures can take years of training.

First level: Sustain Wind chakra until a leaf is cut in two.

Second Level: Cutting through a waterfall is special training to magnify the ability to release large amounts of chakra in an instant.

Third Level: The most difficult level is the third one of incorporating the elemental nature into a jutsu.

Even jounin-class ninja find it difficult to use two change in chakra natures simultaneously. In essence, it means combining change in nature to create something new. This is called Kekkei Genkai and it requires special strength.

Haku was one of those rare shinobi who possessed the Ice Style Kekkei Genkai. He was able to manipulate wind and water changes in chakra nature simultaneously to create ice. And he could perform such a special jutsu because he was of a kekkei genkai-bearing clan

Not sure where you got the supercharging thing from, ankoku. Only elemental entry for one of the earlier databooks I found was this from DB2:

There are multiple categories of ninjutsu, such as Suiton and Doton, but essentially, whether those techniques may or may not be activated is influenced by the terrain, and using Suiton someplace where there is no water is nearly impossible. Only shinobi with Hokage-class levels of mastery may free themselves from this law of Nature.

-A Hokage's ninjutsu stand on a whole other level

-This hijutsu is a legend among legends. There's no one in Konoha who doesn't know about it.

Wait! I seem to recall a discussion on Advanced Natures that led us to the conclusion that Explosion Release is a combination of Fire and Lightning, right?

Maybe the chakra gunpowder that Asuma uses as a template is created by a process that involves Lightning Release, and Asuma's Jutsu is essentially a way to mimic an Explosion Release technique, in the same way Deidara moulds Explosion-natured chakra into clay using a hand-mouth Kinjutsu to create what's essentially a "Pseudo-Kekkei Tota."

An interesting interpretation of the Eight Gates from a DLPer:

The Eight Celestial Gates allow the cells of a body to use more chakra than they are allowed.
The Gates were mentioned to remove limiters on the human body, allowing him to use more chakra than normal. A few authors took this to mean that shinobi could use more chakra in jutsu, leading to in at least one instance an eighty-meter Rasengan (before the showing of Sage Mode too, I might add). This is probably not the case.

The mental limited likely limit the amount of chakra each cell can consume in its use. Moving your body or flooding you limbs with chakra will enhance your strength up until the point that your brain says no more, I can't take it. Unlocking the Gates allows you to break past this limiter, and infuse your cells with progressively more and more chakra. But since this chakra is over the damage threshold, it begins to damage the tissue. Cells burst due to over-flooding, muscles become stronger than tendons and rip free, the heart and lungs pump into over-drive and begin to fail, nerves begin to fry, calories are being burned up like the Griswolds' electricity meter in Christmas Vacation. As you get farther and farther down the Gates, more damage is cause until by the final gate it is catastrophic. THAT is what happens when the Gates are opened.
Was re-reading the Naruversity thread, and came across this, and figured that since we've seen Gai open the Death Gate, we might as well have another look at it.

The 8 Celestial Gates are eight specific tenketsu on a person's Chakra Pathway System, that limit the overall flow of chakra within a person's body. Interestingly, the first seven gates, and where they're located, correspond to the locations of the "Seven Chakras" from the yogic traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism:

1/2:The Crown Chakra (associated with the brain and the entire nervous system) and the Third Eye Chakra (associated with the Carotid Plexus and the Pituitary Gland) are on/in the head.

3:The Throat Chakra (linked to the Thyroid Gland) is on the throat (or the part of the spinal cord parallel with the throat.)

4: The Heart Chakra (associated with the heart and the blood circulatory system, as well as the lungs and the entire chest area,) isn't actually located directly over the heart as the Death Gate is, but to the left/right of it at the centre of the chest, parallel with where the 4th Gate of Pain is supposed to be.

5: The Solar Plexus Chakra is located, shockingly, on the abdomen.

6: The Sacral Chakra, otherwise known to Martial Artists as the "Hara," the supposed source/focus of Ki, is located at the lower abdomen/stomach.

7: Finally, the Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine, and parallel to where the 7th Gate of Wonder is supposed to be.
Now, considering that the first two gates, the Gate of Opening and the Gate of Healing are located in the brain, I would imagine that these gates do involve by-passing the limits that the brain puts on the body.

The Gate of Opening is canonically stated to remove the restraints of the brain on the muscles, so 100% of the user's strength can be used, whereas normally a person can only use 20% of their muscles' strength to keep them from disintegrating. However, Naruto-verse Shinobi are superhuman because of chakra. Without chakra, Lee can't do stuff like pull enormous roots out of the ground and use them as a shield.

So let's say that 98% of Lee's physical strength is due to chakra, and 2% is due to his actual muscles. Would that mean that opening the 1st Gate only multiplies his muscle strength by 5, raising his total strength to 108%? No, that's stupid. Instead, opening the 1st Gate releases the limitation on the amount of chakra he can enhance his body with, causing his strength and speed to increase to 500%, with the downside that he also uses up his stamina 5x's faster than normal.

Incidentally, it is possible that the majority of Medical Ninjutus require the ability to build-up very small quantities of chakra because infusing too much of your own chakra into a patient's muscle too quickly can damage it, as the muscle will already have the chakra of the patient flowing through it, and thus can't withstand that much more.

It is also possible that Senju Tsunade's Heavenly Kick of Pain and Haruno Sakura's Cherry Blossom Impact, that are both derived from the "Chakra Enhanced Strength" technique that is an application of Medical Ninjutsu, and involves concentrating enough chakra to the limbs that at times their fists and feet develop a visible aura of chakra, is based on a similar concept to the 1st Gate, albeit with superior control that prevents the muscle damage that fighting with the 1st Gate open can cause.

Anyway, after Lee's worn himself out opening the Kaimon and performing the Front Lotus, he can open the Gate of Healing, which replenishes his stamina. This Tenketsu is also located in the brain, and once opened, causes the part of the brain it is connected to, the pituitary gland, to produce both Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH,) which stimulates the Adrenal glands, and Human growth hormone (HGH,) which contributes to the repair and regeneration of bone, muscle, tendons and ligaments. However, extended use of HGH can lead to Nerve, muscle, or joint pain, swelling due to fluid in the body's tissues (edema,) Carpal tunnel syndrome, Numbness and tingling of the skin, and perhaps worst of all, High cholesterol levels. HGH can also increase the risk of diabetes and contribute to the growth of cancerous tumours.

If Lee's "second wind" has failed to allow him to defeat his opponent, he can choose to open the 3rd Gate of life located on the spine, triggering his Thyroid Gland to produce higher levels of thyroxine, which is converted into triiodothyronine by the cells and tissues of the body, in the process causing the body's cells to work faster than normal, otherwise known as hyperthyroidism. This both accelerates Lee's metabolism, but also significantly increases their blood pressure, turning his skin red, and ensuring that blood is reaching his muscles and stimulating cell growth. Extended use of this gate could result in Lee developing Hashimoto’s disease, a condition in which your immune system attacks your thyroid gland.

The 4th Gate probably remove all limiters on the heart and lungs, allowing the increased blood to be hyper-oxygenated and minimising build-up of lactic acid.

The Chakra that the 5th Gate of Joy is based on, the Solar Plexus Chakra, is associated with the muscular system (and the organs and glands in the region of the solar plexus.) It is likely the 5th Gate involves amplifying the performance of the muscles somehow.

It is also likely that, as the Sixth Gate of View is based on the Sacral Hara Chakra, that it would involve increasing the rate at which Physical and Spiritual Energy is converted into chakra.

The Root Chakra, the Chakra that the 7th Gate of Wonder is based on, is linked to the Adrenal glands. That's all I got.

Considering that Kabuto screwing with Naruto's heart seemed to switch his Kyuubi healing off, perhaps the Death Gate is where physical and spiritual energy mixes into chakra and actually enters the circulatory system.

Incidentally, a lot of people seem to forget that the gates are Tenketsu. No wonder Neji never seemed to really worry about Lee beating him. All he had to do is hit the right Tenketsu and he could probably switch Lee's 3rd Gate and up* off!

*He probably wouldn't have wanted to risk trying to hit Tenketsu in Lee's brain.

Ah, so those jutsu are actually a kind of clone jutsu then? Like the Shuriken Shadow Clone jutsu, but using toad oil or poison instead of metal kunai.
