About Hakke-ryu Juken

How do you is the Byakugan employed in this technique?

Also, the Gentle Step Twin Lions Fists: how do it work? We know it's a Main House technique, maybe the Main House has the Gentle Step as a whole sub-style?

Question thread's thatta way, son.

But to answer you, the only way I can see that jutsu involving the Bykaugan is that she could use it to detect when she's being attacked from the rear and focus her defence. Like how the Byakugan is used for the Heavenly Rotation purely because it's used to detect exactly when it needs to be used.

The Lion Fists are described as such: "A secret high-level Gentle Fist jutsu, taught only to the Main Family of the Hyuuga Clan. By changing the shape of chakra released from both hands, the user greatly increases reach and destructive power. The arms become entirely like lions which drain the chakra network of those they touch. Because it will fail at even the slightest mistake in chakra control, it is extremely difficult to learn this ability, which is a feat that requires the Byakugan."

But I couldn't say why this is only the one their jutsu known as "Gentle Step".

Now excuse me while I get to work on the Twelve Guardian Ninja like I should have done yesterday.

Earth Grudge Fear (Official Version)

This was a forbidden jutsu that once belonged to the Hidden Waterfall back during the early days of its creation. It was invented by a medical ninja who specialized in using medical-chakra infused threads to stitch up wounds. It was effective but primitive and not a well-known technique in the wider world. Eventually they developed a jutsu granted their body the ability to produce organic tentacles almost without limit and manipulate them with chakra to change their length and form at will to adapt to any circumstance. This allowed them to pull themselves together from any not immediately fatal injury without even needing hand-seals, and to stitch together their patients without needing medical equipment.

Kakuzu was the shinobi who was able to perform this kinjutsu on himself to grant him that very ability. Through his life of warfare, he discovered that he could steal the heart of another human being and assimilate it with his tentacles which allowed him to connect his chakra system to the chakra generated by the heart. The heart retains the strongest chakra nature of the original owner which Kakuzu could use as a shortcut for generating elemental chakra by channelling his chakra through theirs. This discovery led into another when he decided to steal the hearts of more of his enemies and learned that he could stock up to five hearts, ideally one for each element. Thus Kakuzu could cast any jutsu of the five nature transformations that he possesses knowledge of.

In addition, each heart holds a great proportion of the original owner's chakra, increasing his chakra reserves to the point that Kakuzu has almost as much chakra as five people combined. The more chakra the original owner held then the more chakra Kakuzu had access to. It even became clear that his stolen hearts were able to sustain his life force and retard his gaining process so he know that as long as he had a beating heart, he was able to stay alive.

This made him a very dangerous individual and the most prized fighter in his village. That's the reason that he was chosen to eliminate the First Hokage. It was believed that not only would he have the greatest chance of the defeating the man, but that by stealing his heart he would give his village a potent weapon against the Tailed Beasts.

Kakuzu only survived that battle by faking his death, taking advantage of his hearts' ability to move independently from him and return to his temporarily-lifeless body. After he was punished by his village for his failures, he stole scroll containing the forbidden jutsu and restored his strength by carving out the hearts of the village elders before leaving.

In his following years as a bounty hunter, Kakuzu's skill with Earth Grudge Fear only grew. He took the jutsu to a new level, developing a method to permanently convert his own body cells into those tentacles. His tentacles can perfectly simulate most of the functioning of any other cell, even including the neurons of the brain, turning him into basically a mass of prehensile tentacles wearing human skin. The only weakness of the tentacles is that they can't generate chakra, so he must retain a normal human heart.

More than that, he learned of a way to give his hearts even greater independence. Kakuzu would convert his stolen heart into masks sewn to his body. These hearts have sentience which means they can be released in the form of a monstrous body of tentacles. They can move and attack independently, and each can release jutsu belonging to its respective element from the mask, even using them simultaneously in devastating combinations. But since they are not capable of hand-seals or being on the same level as clone, each mask can only release their elemental chakra as a single, specific jutsu by themselves. However Kakuzu is still able to control the masks so by performing the hand-seals for them, they are able to produce a wider variety of jutsu.

Pretty good theory. Although you should probably also mention that the masks can't perform jutsu entirely independently - Kakuzu still has to perform the handseals for their ninjutsu.

Personally, I think the masks are an entirely separate jutsu unrelated to the threads that Kakuzu developed long after leaving his village so he could take greater advantage of having so many chakra natures. Recall that Kakuzu didn't use a mask when he split off his arm underground, so they aren't actually necessary to make the hearts act independent from him. Likely, the masks contain a kind of clone technique that give the hearts increased intelligence and stronger bodies and allows Kakuzu to channel his jutsu through them.

I would also stipulate that the degree to which the user's body is converted to tentacles is probably also a matter of skill and adapting to the jutsu over time. So when Kakuzu first transformed his body, he probably still had a skeleton and other vital organs such as his brain. But over decades of experimenting with the jutsu he learned how to convert more and more of his internal organs into tentacles until only his hearts remained as weak points.

In other words, I would say that Kakuzu is an example of a master who has pushed the Earth Grudge Fear to it's limits. Lower level ninja who use that jutsu (if they still exist in Hidden Waterfall) probably don't have mask minions and their bodies probably aren't nearly as indestructible as Kakuzu's is.

Do you think Earth Grudge Fear would qualify as a type of medical jutsu? Kakuzu used those threads to reattach what was left of Deidara's right arm as well as give him a new transplanted right elbow and left arm. Deidara was able to immediately use those new limbs, so either those threads can also instantly reattach severed nerves and muscles or Kakuzu also knows some traditional medical ninjutsu that were never mentioned or shown.

edit: Does Kakuzu still need to eat or drink? His tentacles are presumably alive since he still had them after being revived as a zombie, and the energy needed to generate physical energy/chakra has to come from somewhere, so I'm guessing he does still eat... but it still seems weird. What about other bodily functions? Does he urinate and defecate? Does he need to breathe? What about sleep?

Fuinjutsu that eats, digests, and reliefs waste? That is some disturbing use of Fuinjutsu but that asks the question of did he still need to do all that?

And how the heart can fake a brain's mechanics.

I'd assume that his "living core of flesh" has no need for any of those functions and fuuinjutsu is used to preserve its life. Preservation is one of the key points of a human puppet.

I wasn't sure if that was truly a requirement or if he deliberately did that to give the jutsu some extra oomph. And I think it takes away one of the major aspects of the masks which is that they can operate independently since they're still relying on Kakuzu to cast a jutsu for them. He'd be better off with shadow clones.

I could get behind them being limited in the ninjutsu they can use since they can't make hand-seals, so those jutsu we see them use basically they're default jutsu. That's when Kakuzu could step in with his hand-seals to executed more complicated ones.

On the rest, I think it would certainly strike a compromise between the way that Earth Grudge Fear is described in the databook and the way it's shown in the manga. The db entry only mentions that the tentacles are produced from the body rather than changing the body, and it doesn't actually mentions the masks.

It definitely seems related and I was thinking about it as I was writing. Perhaps the most basic purpose of Earth Grudge Fear was a medical jutsu that let the user pull themselves together from whatever injuries they suffer.

Maybe these are things that he has lost over time along with his humanity and human body and those tentacles have grown to substitute for all of his bodily functions.

That's a pretty good origin story for the jutsu. Perhaps it was invented by a medical ninja who specialized in using medical-chakra infused threads to stitch up wounds. Eventually he or she developed a jutsu for growing organic medical thread within the body and then ejecting and controlling them externally, much like how Kushina produces prehensile chains from within her own body. This allows the user to literally pull themselves together from any not immediately fatal injury without needing handseals, and to stitch together others without needing to carry extra medical equipment.

Kakuzu then took the jutsu to a new level, developing a method to permanently convert his own body cells into those threads. His threads can perfectly simulate most of the functions of any other cell, even including the neurons of the brain, allowing them to substitute for all his other bodily functions. This renders his body virtually indestructible and ageless as he has essentially been transformed into a mass of sentient living threads wearing human skin. The only weakness of the threads is that they can't generate chakra, so he must retain some amount of normal human flesh to survive - Kakuzu chose to keep multiple hearts, because they produce proportionally more chakra than any other human organ and they retain their previous owner's natural elemental affinities.

Oh wow this reminds me of Crown Clown's belts!

Anyway.

If Kakuzu's Earth Grudge Fear is a medical jutsu in its beginning stages, how come Tsunade didn't show any of it? She is called the best medic to ever grace the earth, yet someone in measly Taki managed to invent something so amazing...not saying that they can't, just saying that if they did, shouldn't Tsunade have at least heard of it? Yet when she was doing autopsy on Kakuzu, she didn't mention anything, nor did she demonstrate a knowledge of this stitching style.

Hmm.

Could be a plot point.

Your explanation could certainly explain why Kakuzu had threads coming out of his damn /mouth/.

RE: The Naruversity

That's a very good point I hadn't considered.

Perhaps Kakuzu killed every other user of the jutsu and destroyed all written knowledge of it when he defected from Hidden Waterfall. The dude was 91 years old, so he likely defected before Tsunade was even born. If he's been the only known user of the jutsu for Tsunade's entire lifespan and he was keeping a low enough profile that Konoha didn't know anything about him or even that he was still alive, that would certainly explain why Tsunade didn't know about his amazing medical jutsu.

Of course, it could also just be a plot hole. The fact that Konoha didn't know that Kakuzu was still alive or anything about him also didn't make much sense. Kakuzu works as a bounty hunter who regularly targets S-rank ninja. Every other village should damn well know who he because he competes with their hunter-nin and because he's probably killed dozens of each of their elite ninja. And unlike Sasori, he isn't exactly stealthy when he goes after a target - the guy leveled the entire Fire Temple and slaughtered most of the monks just to capture one bounty.

RE: The Naruversity

Whoa. If he was 91 years old when he /defected/, which, remember, was when he returned a failure in his attempt to assassinate Hashirama, and thus by the time canon rolls around, poor guy would've been 100+ and still going strong! I though the wiki says he was 91 years old during Naruto Shippuden?

Whatever.

Still doesn't explain why Tsuande, brilliant brilliant drove-Elder-Chiyo-up-the-wall Tsunade didn't realize the medical implications of Kakuzu's threads when they hauled him in for autopsy...oh well! Fanfiction plot point!

Did the db or the wiki state explicitly Konoha didn't know he was alive? Because I really think it's just a case of one-eye-open-one-eye-closed for Kakuzu. Remember that only Kiri has a special unit of ANBU called 'hunter-nin' because Kiri churned out so many traitors that it was beginning to become an international problem and a village has to clean up after itself. For other villages, the only way they can hunt their own missing-nin is for the Hokage to dispatch a team on a mission that won't earn money (not from the Daimyō certainly, why pay the village for cleaning up a problem they caused?) and in essence waste a team and its time, it's better for outside bounty hunters to do the hunting. Once bounty hunting for missing-nin becomes an actual job that can sustain a lifestyle, at least the villages can console themselves that while they are losing money on their missing-nin (the bounties come from the village where the killed nin originates, I assume) they aren't losing more money by taking away time from their active teams.

Making sense?

And through this 'job', the villages can rest somewhat assured that bounty hunters would stick to bounty hunting and not entertain ideas like robbing a mart or leveling a village on a whim, for example.

Kakuzu's leveling of a temple, well, wasn't that Hidan and him combined? Do I recall Kakuzu telling Hidan to move after they did that, because of all the ruckus they've been making?

Not quite sure, I loved that arc anyway, gotta go read it again.

No I meant that Kakuzu was 91 when he died. Which means he was probably in his late teens / early twenties when the Hidden Villages were founded. (The Third Databook even mentions that Kakuzu used to be a samurai, so Hidden Waterfall was probably one of those samurai groups who converted to ninjutsu that Hanzou mentioned.)

Kakuzu defected after battling Hashirama, and Hashirama was a short-lived Hokage. (The Konoha shinobi academy was founded by the Second Hokage 60 years before Part 1 of the manga according to the Official Fanbook.) Tsunade was born during Hashirama's lifetime, therefore Kakuzu probably defected from Takigakure before or around the same time Tsunade was born.

Hui Jikan said:

Konoha not knowing that Kakuzu was alive is a deduction of mine based on the fact that Shikamaru didn't know anything about Kakuzu going into their second battle. Shikamaru is the kind of guy who would have tried to research unknown opponents before rushing to attack them, so the fact that he had nothing on Kakuzu would seem to imply that Konoha had nothing on him too.

The only problem with this theory is that Kakuzu wasn't hunting missing-nin. He was hunting loyal Konoha ninja and loyal Fire Monks. And the bounty stations were willing to pay for the corpses of those loyal Fire Nation Guardian Shinobi.

That's why I say that Kakuzu must compete with the villages for bounties, it's because of the mere existence of those bounty stations within the Fire Nation. Konoha knows all about the bounty stations, all of their locations, and the fact that they were offering bounties on loyal shinobi. There must be a reason that Konoha tolerates the presence of those bounties stations in their country when they are essentially offering to pay people to kill loyal Konoha ninja. Those bounty stations must offer Konoha some benefit to justify allowing them to exist nearby. Konoha ninja also hunting down bounties and collecting the money at those stations is the only reason I can think of for that.

Oh man that is a good fanfiction idea. Imagine if Tsunade secretly reverse engineered the Earth Grudge Fear from Kakuzu's corpse... and then when Madara bisects her during the Fourth Shinobi World War, she simply laughs and pulls herself back together with black threads.

RE: The Naruversity

An interesting decision to have Kakuzu be the inventor of Earth Grudge Fear, who already knew the jutsu and had stockpiled multiple hearts before his battle with Hashirama. It does explain the frequently cited issue of why the hell Takigakure thought he actually stood a chance of succeeding at killing the motherfucking God of Shinobi, especially when he's never displayed any combat skills unrelated to his signature jutsu or his stolen elemental affinities. It also explains how he survived the fight without assuming that Hashirama showed him mercy.

Interestingly, I don't think it actually contradicts the databooks. The third databook says that "he takes with him the village's prized forbidden jutsu" when he leaves the village. Technically, nowhere does it state he didn't already know the jutsu before his defection, so yeah he could have been stealing the jutsu simply to deny it to Takigakure out of spite.

In fact, technically, the databook doesn't actually specify that the "prized forbidden jutsu" he stole was Earth Grudge Fear. It heavily implies that it was with the huge focus on that jutsu throughout his entire profile entry, but it doesn't straight up say so.

I wonder if the reason Kakuzu was punished so harshly was because Konoha threatened retaliation. Perhaps Takigakure threw Kakuzu under the bus, claiming he acted independently in attempting to assassinate the Hokage and treating him like a missing-nin, because it was the only way to avoid war with Konoha.

Also you might want to proofread that post. Lots of grammar errors. You also missed some edits I made to some of my posts that you copy-pasted a few paragraphs from.

That...was actually not my intention. I was trying to say something along the lines of Kakuzu being given the opportunity to learn the village's prized jutsu or being the only one to do it successfully. Looking back, I butchered that sentence entiely.

The rest is what I was going for at least.

Sounds legit. That and the fact that he survived his failure instead of dying like more hardcore individuals might have believed he should have. Konoha wouldn't necessarily even have had to threaten retaliation as the mere thought of them turning against Taki could have fueled their actions.

RE: The Naruversity

Though, having Kakuzu be the only user of Earth Grudge Fear/the inventor of Earth Grudge Fear would make more sense then it being merely a forbidden jutsu of Waterfall. The forbidden jutsu of Shadow Clone in Leaf was 'stolen' by the 'Nine-Tail brat' right? Which goes to show that security isn't too high. Which goes to reason that there had to be other tentacle-waving, thread-spilling monsters out there besides Kakuzu because anyone with half a brain and shinobi instincts could've stolen the scroll containing Earth Grudge Fear, and then through interaction with these monsters Leaf might have gained information on the technique.

However. Canon says Leaf had no information on Earth Grudge Fear or Kakuzu or Waterfall hidden techniques, so Kakuzu being the only user of Earth Grudge Fear/its inventor/the only one who knows about it makes more sense.

Earth Grudge Fear (Nova Version)

Earth Grudge Fear was once the prized forbidden jutsu of the Hidden Waterfall Village, before it was stolen by the infamous missing-nin Kakuzu. It is a powerful and versatile medical ninjutsu that drastically modifies the human body, granting the user the ability to generate organic black threads from their own flesh and chakra. The threads can be produced in great numbers and length, and manipulated as easily and precisely as the user's own limbs.

The primary purpose of the threads is for sewing up any injuries the user or others might suffer, commonly by reattaching body parts. The threads are infused with a special kind of medical chakra that instantly reconnects any kind of severed tissue, including nerves and chakra pathways - as a result, an amputated limb reattached with this jutsu is immediately restored to full functionality. A patient can even be saved from decapitation if the head is reattached before brain death sets it. Furthermore, because the threads do not require handseals to generate or control, the user of this jutsu is granted an incredible power of recovery from physical trauma - they can literally will their body to pull itself back together from any injury that is not instantaneously fatal.

In addition to sewing up injuries, the threads can also be used to transplant organs and limbs between different people without any risk of rejection. Kakuzu used this ability to integrate the hearts of powerful defeated opponents into his own body, granting him a portion of the previous owners' chakras as well as access to their strongest elemental affinities.

However, while the medical usage of this kinjutsu is almost miraculously effective and versatile, it is also much cruder than other advanced medical ninjutsu such as the mystical Palm Technique. The healed tissue is not bonded very strongly and it is very easy to accidentally reopen the wounds through physical exertion. It it thus necessary for the threads to remain in the body to act as sutures, holding the tissues together until it can heal properly over time or further medical ninjutsu can be applied. For this reason, any ninja who uses this kinjutsu and frequently engages in battle will eventually come to have a body that resembles a ragdoll - the more injuries they've accumulated over their lifetime, the more stitches are required to keep their body from falling apart.

The secondary purpose of the threads is to be used as weapons. The threads can be extended very quickly and accurately in order to ensnare and impale opponents. The user can also generate a large amount of threads and compact them together around their body into thick tentacles for long-ranged combat. Kakuzu even developed a derivative jutsu that utilized his stolen hearts to split off masses of thread from his main body which could act independently for a limited time. He later incorporated special chakra transmitting masks into his "thread minions", giving them monstrous forms more suited for battle and allowing him to channel appropriate elemental ninjutsu through the hearts remotely.

Kakuzu, being the greatest user of Earth Grudge Fear who has ever lived, eventually developed a unique and terrifying upgrade to the kinjutsu. He invented a method to permanently convert his own cells into into the organic threads. His new thread-based body could perfectly simulate most of the functions of any other human cell, even including the neurons of the brain, allowing them to substitute for all his other bodily functions. This rendered his body virtually indestructible and ageless as he had essentially been transformed into a mass of sentient living thread wearing human skin. The only weakness of his new form was that the threads couldn't generate chakra, so he was forced to retain his vulnerable untransformed hearts to fulfill that essential function.

maybe you should add something about how the secrets of the technique fades/destructs/still remains hidden/reverts to organs upon death? That would explain why Tsunade didn't bat an eyelash.

I think it's more likely that Naruto's rasenshuriken shredded Kakuzu's body so finely and thoroughly that there wasn't enough undamaged tissue left for Tsunade to properly analyze the remains.

Medical chakra which is all but confirmed to be yang chakra which gives life which is like how the masked hearts are given life to move under their own power. Hmm.

That said, I'm leery of throwing another type of chakra into the mix when Earth Grudge Fear already has so much emphasis on the five main chakra natures in the manga. And I liked the idea that it came from and could be used like medical ninjutsu without quite being one itself.
