RE: The Naruversity

I don't think Minato is significantly faster than Tobirama - Tobirama is also famous for his speed and has even used the Flying Thunder God - Second Step version. I think that Minato is better with the Flying Thunder God technique because he improved the marking formula to make it more efficient and stable.

Just look at their respective marking formulas. Tobirama's is significantly more complicated, using many more character in much smaller font, and arranged in a unique pattern. Minato's marking formula is just seven normal looking characters arranged in a row like a regular sentence. I choose to believe that this is because Minato figured out how to simply the jutsu without reducing it's effectiveness, so he gets the same power and speed as Tobirama but uses less chakra with each jump, can apply the seals more quickly, his seals are more difficult to remove, and he can place many more of them simultaneously, which enabled his signature strategy of throwing armfulls of marked kunai all over the battlefield.

RE: The Naruversity

Tobirama explicitly stated Minato being faster

Also, Tobirama's use of Second Step is simpler than Minato's, as Tobirama didn't really moved much compared to Minato

RE: The Naruversity

Yes, that's why I specifically said "not SIGNIFICANTLY faster". Minato is faster than Tobirama, but not to the point where that alone can account for the differences in their usages of the Flying Thunder God jutsu. Tobirama is fast enough that "throw arm fulls of marked kunai everywhere" should still be an effective strategy for him, but he has never done anything like that to our knowledge. Why not?

I think the more likely answer is that his overcomplicated jutsu formula simply can't support that many active marks simultaneously. But Minato's improved, more stable and chaka efficient jutsu formula can. That's why Minato can spam the jutsu like crazy, create time-space barriers to deflect enemy attacks, and teleport an entire army (with Naruto's help). Tobirama's more primitive jutsu formula can't do any of those things. Tobirama may have invented Flying Thunder God, but Minato truly did take it to the next level.

That's my headcanon anyway.

Chakra Natures (Official Version)

Chakra can be transformed to give it the characteristics of one of the five elements; fire, wind, lightning, earth and water. It changes the chakra's nature so that it acts in the same way the normal element would act.

Fire: Chakra as hot as fire, with the power to burn anything it touches. It can turn its target into flames and, like wind, is especially suited to offensive attacks. It is strong against wind and weak against water.

Wind: Chakra as sharp as a blade which can cut and tear anything in its path. It is used for speciality ninja weapons and jutsu and is most effective in short to mid-range distances. It is strong against lightning and weak against fire.

Lightning: Chakra that electrocutes, diffuses easily and is compatible with mid-to-long distance jutsu. Adding it to metal weapons makes them more lethal and increases the electrical shock. It is strong against earth and weak against wind.

Earth: Chakra that increases the solidity and composition of all things. A master can make steel unbreakable and clay more pliable. It can be applied to jutsu and other things. It is strong against water and weak against lightning.

Water: Chakra that is compatible with the multiple-faceted shape transformation. As in creating fog to camouflage oneself, or a tsunami wave to obstruct something, it is effective for defensive purposes. It is strong against fire and weak against earth.

Ying and Yang

Yin and Yang are chakra natures that exist outside of the five elements.

Whereas the five elements are created by changing the characteristics of chakra, these two elements are created by changing its composition. Chakra is made by mixing together physical energy and spiritual energy in equal amounts which serves as the fuel for most ninjutsu so by changing the ratio of the energies being mixed together, it can create a different kind of chakra altogether.

Yin Release is created from chakra that is two parts spiritual energy and one part physical energy. It uses imagination and manipulates the spirit, creating form from nothingness to give shape to that which has none. Genjutsu is an example of Yin Release. It uses yin chakra to manipulate the chakra flow of the target's cerebral nervous system, allowing them to control the five senses and alter their perceptions with illusions of all kinds.

Yang Release is created from chakra that is two parts spiritual energy and one part physical energy. It governs vitality and manipulates the body, breathing life into form to animate that which lacks life of its own. Medical ninjutsu is example of Yang Release. It uses yang chakra to stimulate the natural healing process of the body when channeled into the target's cells, allowing them to heal from injuries at an accelerated rate.

It is fairly common for ninja clans to have their hiden ninjutsu based on Yin Release or Yang Release, separating them from other clans with distinctive fighting styles and unique training methods.

For instance, the Yamanaka Clan use Yin Release to project their consciousness from their own bodies and delve into the minds of others, and the Nara Clan use it to give their shadows a physical presence and even take on a three-dimensional shape. The Akimichi Clan use Yang Release to increase the mass of their bodies to multiply their size several times over, and the Inuzuka Clan use it to enhance their enhance body to grant them a bestial strength and senses.

It's possible for the creation or Yin and Yang chakra to be taken to extremes where the chakra is composed almost entirely of either physical or spiritual energy, causing it to become unstable and independently seek out its opposite form of energy to attain some balance. This is typically just a mistake made during training but some individuals have developed jutsu which use this as the main function such as Tayuya's Revolt of the Demon World.

Nature Transformation

Elemental ninjutsu can be learned and cast like any other with the correct hand-seal sequence and exact amount of chakra. Some are D-rank jutsu simple enough that they are expected to be learned even by rookie genin such as the Hidden Mist Jutsu in Kiri and the Practice Brick Jutsu in Iwa, Others are S-rank jutsu of such difficulty that even the most talented of geniuses would struggle to use them such as Naruto's Wind Release: Rasen Shuriken.

The main difference between this kind of ninjutsu and the rest is that each element has a corresponding hand-seal. These specific hand-seals are what transform a ninja's chakra into that nature to release the jutsu such as the Tiger seal for Fire Relase or the Snake seal for Earth Release. The more advanced the ninjutsu then the more times the elemental hand-seal is likely to appear in its sequence, as well as having a long string of hand-seals altogether. Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet, for instance, has a grand total of forty-four hand-seals when it is only a B-rank jutsu.

But these hand-seals are not a necessity for casting elemental ninjutsu. Instead a ninja can learn nature transformation.

Nature transformation is a type of chakra manipulation where a ninja gives their chakra the characteristics of one of the five elements. The greater their mastery over an element, the more efficient and powerful their elemental ninjutsu are. Everyone is attuned to one of the five elements which they would have the most talent for, making it easier for them to master its nature transformation and learn jutsu of that element.

An individual's affinity can learned by using paper made from trees that were infused with chakra as a seed to make them sensitive to its energy when grown. With the touch of a person's chakra, the paper is changed to reflect their chakra nature. Wind cuts the paper, lightning wrinkles it, water soaks it, earth crumbles it and fire burns it. It is often the mistaken belief that the depth of an individual's affinity for an element can be judged by how much the paper is affected. In truth, if the chakra paper, for instance, is shredded to pieces then it just means that they gave more chakra to it. An individual's affinity is almost always the first nature transformation they will learn and will be the one they have the most jutsu for.

Training nature transformation can be broken down into three levels. The first level is to strengthen the chakra nature by sustaining its effect on a material object. This process usually takes around half a year for the average shinobi, though the training can be accelerated by using visualizing that helps capture the essence of the element in question.

The second level is to increase the speed and scale of the transformation by magnifying the ability to release large amounts of transformed chakra in an instant. Like learning to instinctively gather chakra as fast as possible to be more combat effective, it allows them to cast elemental ninjutsu efficiently.

And the third level is to merge nature transformation with a jutsu, either consciously transforming their chakra themselves when casting an elemental ninjutsu or by introducing the effect with a non-elemental ninjutsu to grant it additional properties.

Mastering an element usually takes a couple of years for the average shinobi even with an affinity. Practically every shinobi will choose to master at least one and learn others to some degree, if only to improve their jutsu casting. Most shinobi of jounin-level will have mastered two or more. A shinobi who has mastered all chakra natures is a rare thing given the many years of dedicated training it would require.

When nature transformation is taken to the highest level possible, the chakra nature gains unique properties. The chakra turns pitch-black and the respective properties of the element are taken to the absolute extreme.

Black Fire is capable of burning for seven days and nights without ever being extinguished. Black Lightning can move at speeds closer to true lightning and sear the target's nervous system to potentially cause permanent damage. Black Wind is the sharpest substance in existence and even the gentlest of breezes carries terrible destructive force. Black Earth is equally the toughest, unbreakable and unbendable to all except its creator's will. And Black Water is the most versatile as its volume far outstrips the energy used to make it and even more adaptable in shape and form.

Controlling the Elements

Elemental ninjutsu can be made of chakra itself or by controlling an existing substance with elemental chakra.

The first method transforms the ninja's chakra into an element, shapes it and releases it in that state. It means that they can cast the jutsu at practically any time in any location but the effect or substances it creates will eventually break down once when the chakra dies out. An example of this method in practice is by spitting out a mass of earth from the ninja's body which rises up into a wall for Earth Release: Earth Style Wall.

The second method creates the elemental chakra and channels it preexisting mass of the corresponding element, then shapes and releases that. It requires less chakra because the substance is already available but can only be used when the natural element is within reach of the user's chakra. When an elemental ninjutsu is created using a preexisting element, the jutsu's effects will remain even when the chakra dissipates. An example of this method in practice is by controlling the ground beneath the ninja to make it rise up into a wall for Earth Release: Earth Style Wall.

Fire and lightning jutsu almost exclusively uses the first method because of their lack of abundance in nature. Wind jutsu almost exclusively uses the second method because air can be found practically everywhere. And earth and water jutsu are mix of the two because their elements can be found in large expanses but aren't always available.

However, it's possible to use both methods at the same time such as by controlling a pre-existing mass of earth but also increasing its quantity with more chakra. Such as with Earth Release: Earth-Style Rampart which raises a section of the ground while creating new quantities of earth to build a large cliff.

Advanced Natures

These chakra natures belong to a higher tier that cannot be created by transforming one's chakra alone. The ninja must create and release at least two different chakra natures simultaneously to combine them into one, new nature.

In its most basic form, it is used by gathering the chakra of one element in one hand, the chakra of another element in the other hand and then bringing them together in a hand-seal to draw out the combined element. Said element possesses the properties belonging to its composite elements but manifests them in an entirely new form.

Advanced chakra natures are not an ability that anyone can learn, not even the most talented or hardworking. They belong solely to the realm of kekkei genkai, abilities that are inherited through a bloodline.

Those with this type of bloodline limit have the instinctive ability to transform their chakra into different natures and combine them. This means that the only necessary part of the nature transformation training they require is increasing the amount of elemental chakra they can produce in an instant. The main focus is for them is shape transformation as the different shapes they give to their combined element govern the versatility of their style.

RE: The Naruversity

I've been working on a chakra nature post of my own for a while too. I haven't finished it yet though because of Wind Release. That element doesn't really make a lot of sense when you try to break it down.

For example, you might think that wind release is like earth and water in that it typically manipulates a pre-existing real world substance around the user, right? Except Asuma describes the process as "grinding two chakra fields together in order to sharpen them into fine pieces." You obviously can't "sharpen" air molecules by "grinding" them together. That process could work for making earth release blades, but not with a gas! And furthermore, neither Asuma nor Kakashi ever mentions anything about taking control of the air around him with his chakra to Naruto. You'd think that would be a rather important step! So I'm forced to conclude that at least Naruto's usage of wind release is pure chakra like most fire and lightning jutsu.

There's also the issue that many wind release jutsu don't act anything like real air. Air is a gas, it cannot "cut" anything! Tornadoes and Hurricanes cause damage by brute force, ripping things apart with air currents that move at hundreds of miles per hour. However! There are a few wind release jutsu that do seem to actually control real air molecules - Orochimaru's Wind Release Great Breakthrough, Danzou's various vacuum jutsu, and most of Shukaku and Temari's pre-time skip wind jutsu.

It's almost like there are two types of wind release chakra. One being a "energy type" element like fire and lightning that creates sharp blades of chakra to attack, and the other that takes control of air molecules to create powerful currents of wind or dangerous vacuums. And I can't figure out how to reconcile these two very different usages of the element in a theory.

Didnt you kinda already solve your own problem? Its easier to just 'grind' wind chakra into a sharp edge but people who are really good at it can actually maniuplate air particles for the brute force ie, Danzo& Shukaku(old as dirt), or Orochimaru(obsessed with learning jutsu).

Well yeah. It's like how Kakuzu's Earth Spear uses earth chakra but doesn't manipulate the earth at all. If anything, that could be taken as an example of what makes the Rasen Shuriken among the best jutsu of Wind Release because its wind chakra taken to its absolute extreme.

Wind chakra alters the properties of real air to give it the ability to cut, I'd say.

I don't think blunt wind jutsu are any more special than the sharp kind. The first wind jutsu we ever saw was made of brute force and only a C-rank. It just seems like different examples of shape transformation to me.

Is it possible that it could somehow be related to Natural Energy? After all, NE is in the "atmosphere and terrain," and we know that there are Earth Release techniques that involve the Dragon Veins...

How does a ninja use this sharp wind chakra to perform blunt force air blasts and vacuum style wind jutsu though? Do they use shape manipulation to dull the chakra when they activate the jutsu?

It just doesn't make much sense to me for sharpening your chakra to be a fundamental step in the process of creating wind chakra but for half the wind jutsu we've seen to not involve sharp edges in any way. It would be like if we were told that superheating your chakra was a fundamental step in the process of creating fire chakra but half the fire jutsu in the manga weren't hot and didn't burn things. It's illogical and inconsistent.

Well okay, that makes sense. Kakashi didn't bother telling Naruto about how wind chakra can be used to manipulate the air itself because he never intended for Naruto to actually learn any traditional wind jutsu. The entire point of the training was to improve the rasengan by adding elemental chakra.

Although in hindsight it would have benefited Naruto to teach him how to control the air. If the Rasenshuriken actually manipulated real gases then Nagato would not have been able to absorb it so easily. Even if he did absorb the chakra and eliminate the threat from the microscopic chakra blades he still would have had to deal with a small sphere of super-compressed hurricane force winds suddenly exploding in his face.

knight504 said:

That seems backwards to me though. The point of elemental chakra is to alter the properties of your chakra to better mimic a real world substance or energy. Water chakra flows like real water, earth chakra is hard like rocks, fire chakra is hot like fire, etc. But then wind chakra comes along and rather than mimicking the properties of the air currents it's named after, it instead alters the properties of the air to give it a sharpness it doesn't naturally possess?

knight504 said:

I could buy the sharp vs. blunt wind jutsu divide just being different applications of shape manipulation if it weren't for the fact that Asuma describes sharpening the chakra as a fundamental step in the process of creating wind chakra. That makes it sound like all wind chakra is sharp, like it's a basic aspect of that element of chakra the same way that all fire chakra is hot and all water chakra is fluid. So the existence of non-sharp wind jutsu contradicts Asuma's explanation.

Also, doesn't "sharpening" the chakra sound more like a kind of shape transformation rather than a nature transformation? Making your chakra thin and sharp is changing the shape of the chakra, not changing its inherent physical properties. It's not on the same level as how fire chakra is hot or earth chakra is hard. I could easily see someone create sharp blades of fire chakra through the same process - nature transform the chakra to heat it up, then shape transform it by grinding it down into a thin edge. That seems like it should logically work. Hell, that seems like how most of Sasuke's lightning jutsu work - nature transform it to make it vibrate, then shape transform it into a long thin blade.

I think it would make a lot more sense if sharpness wasn't the fundamental property of wind chakra, but instead "gaseous" was. And sharpness is just a form of shape manipulation that can be applied to any element but wind jutsu are more famous for it. Because sharp wind is far more effective and dangerous (it's lot harder to see a blade of air coming and dodge than a blade of water or rock) so all the elite wind ninja use it.

RE: The Naruversity

Hypothesis: Manipulating an element and turning one's chakra into that element are the opposite extremes of the nature manipulation.
We can even think elements manipulation is Yang, chakra conversion is Yin: this because the Yang-Water seal in Suiryudan, a technique that manipulates massive amounts of water.

RE: The Naruversity

"Cutting" on a really small scale is just brute force smashing apart existing structures. You can cut with any fluid, you just need to apply enough energy. Water cutters are quite common and used to slice industrial slabs of steel with precision. Air cutters I know for a fact exist, but I don't know what they're used for.

So you're not really changing existing physical properties to make air cut something.

Existing mechanisms already exist for the difference between a precision based wind manipulation (such as making a chakra blade to cut with) or a power based manipulation (blowing a huge gust of wind). You can use elemental chakra to create a mass of that element. Kisame regularly made lakes out of his chakra. To create enough air for a forceful displacement in the form of a strong gust seems easy compared to that.

RE: The Naruversity

On the subject of "grinding two chakra fields together in order to sharpen them into fine pieces" I've been wondering if that was really intended to describe the actual process of creating wind chakra. Because what it could actually have been is a visualization technique meant to aid in training rather what is done with the chakra to transform it. Like when Jiraiya drew a spiral on Naruto's hand to help him with the Rasengan.

So Asuma's telling Naruto to imagine that because it's a way of helping him better capture the essence of wind chakra, thereby strengthening his chakra to complete the first level of nature transformation. He's not literally grinding his chakra together. It may not even be the only way to get the same result, that's just the method that Asuma uses hence why it's just a "tip" and not a standard part of the learning process.

Just a thought I had anyway.

RE: The Naruversity

That could work. Honestly it seems to me more like Asuma was trying to teach Naruto how to shape transform his chakra into a blade rather than nature transform it into wind chakra. Because he was literally asking Naruto to infuse his chakra into the trench knife when he told him that tip.

Maybe it's not true that all wind chakra is sharp, but that's how Asuma learned how create wind chakra so that's how he taught Naruto how to do it.

Hmm... Perhaps a similar explanation could explain the different kinds of Lava Release. Maybe each village created a different method for combining and transforming fire and earth chakra and thus ended with a different kind of "lava" chakra.

Went and added even more stuff to the chakra natures.

To be honest, I don't think there's any way around wind chakra being inherently sharp because a) that's how it manifests with the chakra paper b) it's what the entire nature transformation training was about and c) the phrase "chakra as sharp as a blade" is lifted straight from the databook under its definition. I think rexnihil might be on the money with trying to think of what wind chakra in a broader kind of way.

Times like this make me miss datakim.

Good points. Now I just have to figure out how to elegantly explain why half the wind jutsu in the manga aren't sharp when sharpness is clearly stated to be a fundamental property of the element itself and not just an application of shape release.

This is a really clever observation and I really want to work this into a theory now somehow. It makes a lot of sense if when you think about how Yin and Yang are described:

Yang - breathing life into form to animate that which lacks life of its own. Turning a lake of water into a flying dragon sounds a lot like that, doesn't it? And like Anko pointed out, we know that the Water Dragon Bullet uses a seemingly unique, never explained "Yang Water" handseal.

Yin - creating form from nothingness to give shape to that which has none. Transforming your formless chakra into a dragon made of water sounds a lot like that, doesn't it?

If elemental jutsu that animate existing elements and guide existing energies are slighting yang unbalanced (but not enough to qualify as Yang Release) and jutsu that directly transform one's chakra into an element are slightly yin unbalanced (but again, not enough to qualify as Yin Release) that would be a simple and elegant explanation for the difference. (A difference which is bizarrely never explained or even directly acknowledged by the manga or databooks.)

Honestly the only issue I can see with this theory is that it implies that Naruto is an expert at using Yin style wind Release, when we know he's more of a Yang kind of guy. But that can be attributed to Kakashi only teaching him the yin wind release style (perhaps because pure wind chakra is necessary to combine with a pure chakra jutsu like the rasengan?) Naruto probably would have had an easier time learning yang style wind release, he just never got a chance too.

Chakra Enhancement v2 (Knyght)

Knyght

The Collector
Revamping the chakra enhancement entry. I'm undecided whether to include Jinchuuriki-style chakra enhancement and/or chakra modes in general.

Chakra Enhancement v2 (Official Version)

Shinobi can enhance their physical capabilities with chakra to perform superhuman feats.

By learning to create and wield their chakra, ninjas unconsciously enhance their bodies with it to make themselves stronger, faster and more durable than the average human being. It increases the amount and speed of the chakra flowing through their pathways at all times which serves to make them physically superior. Even children who are still in training have a baseline strength that surpasses grown men and allows them to jump over obstacles several feet higher than themselves, run across tree tops and scale buildings with ease.

The next level of chakra enhancement is to consciously focus chakra in different parts of the body, such as focusing chakra into their legs to run faster or into their hands to hit harder. Most shinobi reach this stage once they start learning skills such as tree climbing and water walking as it gives them more awareness and control over their internal chakra flow. At the beginning, it takes concentration to send chakra to the right location but as their skill develops, it grows more and more instinctive until they are constantly using chakra enhancement in combat to give them a baseline speed and strength that is far greater than normal.

Increasing the amount of chakra magnifies the effects of enhancement but there is a physical limit to how much can be focused in one area. The better developed the shinobi's body then the more chakra they can focus within their limbs because it is capable of withstanding increased amount of energy and the force its exerts. This means that a taijutsu specialist is likely to gain greater benefits from using chakra enhancement than a genjutsu specialists for instance, allowing them to perform impressive feats of strength like uprooting a tree trunk or shattering concrete walls.

Chakra can be used to enhance the senses as well as speed or strength. By concentrating chakra in the right organs, a ninja can heighten any of their five senses beyond what humans are normally capable of. For instance, there are the Inuzuka Clan who all specialize in enhancing their sense of smell to equal their canine companions, or the genin of the Hidden Sound who developed their sense of hearing.

On the topic of physical enhancement, Tsunade of the Sannin holds the greatest recognition for her inhuman strength. In her youth, she used her talent for medical ninjutsu and knowledge of the human body to enhance the development of her musculature through specialized training. She continually pushed her muscles through a cycle of destruction and rebirth to build their strength while carefully optimizing them for their purpose, essentially remodeling herself into the incarnation of physical force who could crush stone with pure muscle power. The chakra enhancement she developed was an adaption of medical ninjutsu as it used her understanding of how cells functions and perfect control over her own chakra to push it into every single cell in her fist and fingers right up to their absolute limit in an instant, maximising the impact of her punch. Anyone else attempting such a feat would be more likely to risk permanent damage to their own body unless they possessed those same qualities.

Naturally this technique evolved over time through practice and experience. She learned to not only collect her chakra like this in her hands but in every part of her body so that she can release her inhuman strength with any kind of physical blow she launches as well as performing feats of great strength such as lifting giant objects. Just as other shinobi learn to focus their chakra into their limbs instinctively, Tsunade learned to do the same with her own version of enhancement until her every movement held the potential to deliver incredible destruction.

Ninja Academy v2 (Knyght)

Another revamp which took a freaking long time.

Ninja Academy v2 (Official Version)

In the Warring States Era, the children born in shinobi clans receiving personal training from their parents and were then trained together in groups of similar age and skill by their clansmen. This meant that there wasn't any kind of standard learning process as each clan taught their children different things in different ways which led to a discrepancy between the level of skill and knowledge displayed by shinobi of different clans. Those who wished to become shinobi without being born into it were either self-taught or had to find masters willing to teach them, so this often means that they were left at a distinct disadvantage in the field that led to their early deaths more often than not.

The collaboration between clans brought by the advent of the hidden villages opened up new possibilities. It began with the youngest Uchiha and Senju being put into classes together - soon followed by the children of the other clan that joined - where they would learn essential knowledge such as maths, history, geography and the rest. However their shinobi training remained solely in the hands of the clans themselves.

It wasn't until the First Great Shinobi War broke out that the situation changed as children learning solely from their own family became too inefficient.

Fifty or so years ago, the Second Hokage chose to increase Konoha's military by building a training camp at the base of the village mountain. It started out purely for education but quickly merged with military and domestic parts of their lifestyle. Utilizing the shared knowledge from the clans living and working together, this Academy hosted the first standardized curriculum for teaching the shinobi arts that all of their children would learn from. After the Second Hokage’s death, the Third Hokage perfected the educational systems, and education and training are now carried out under strict standards.

The Konoha Academy was meant for the development as shinobi with respect to individuality. In a free, open-minded environment students are allowed to stengthen their bodies and minds, discovering their own ninja paths. When they have found their way, they are guided by the belief that fills them.

Children undertake an entrance exam which tests whether they have any aptitude for the ninja arts, whether they are healthy in body and mind, possess a spirit able to endure hard work and training, and a love for their village with the hope to help preserve peace and prosperity.

Students are given basic training and education so they gain sturdy bodies and fundamental knowledge immediately after entrance. They learn the type of things that all children are expected to learn but the focus of their lessons is always on their role as shinobi in training. To hone the body, they undergo all kinds of physical training such as running, climbing, push-ups, pull-ups, vaulting, throwing and swimming. To hone the mind, they study the theories behind jutsu and seal in detail, learn history of shinobi and engrave the shinobi code into their hearts.

When students are deemed to have mastered the basics and maneuveres they are moved to the application stage, where they are taught techniques designed for their personality and skills. Private lessons or special seminars help enhance their specials qualities.

The practical lessons focus on taijutsu, genjutsu and ninjutsu. Students learn fighting stances that serve as a solid foundation for any individual styles they develop, participating in sparring matches to test their skill. Illusions are difficult enough that they aren't taught in the Academy, but the students are trained in detecting and countering them. And all students are expected to learn five E-rank ninjutsu, the most fundamental jutsu taught to every shinobi that act as a stepping stone for the entire art.

Today, the Academy is a seven year course where students enroll from the age of five and graduate at twelve. The graduation age has changed repeatedly since its inception as during times of war, the village needed to produce ninja at a faster rate to provide manpower, especially the students who are particularly. Only during peacetime are all students expected to attend for the full seven years.

Each year group usually has around ninety students in total which are split into three classes of thirty. At the start of the new year, the students are rearranged into different classes to familiarize themselves with a wider range of people and to teach them to adapt to change. Even during their lessons, the classes are often broken down into smaller groups for their school activities.

In the last year of the Academy, there are three graduation exams. The first two are mock exams which show the students their current skill level and how much knowledge they have so they know what they need to improve on. The final exam is at the end of the year and is the one that decides whether or not they become ninja. The exam tests their theoretical and practical knowledge, their skill in taijutsu, whether they are capable of recognising and dispelling genjutsu, and their mastery of ninjutsu.

And this institution isn't the only one of its kind in the Land of Fire as not all of their shinobi come from a single academy. The many samurai schools that once existed across the nation changed to become ninja schools that taught their students how to wield chakra. These training camps are all allied with Konoha, training new recruits, housing border patrol units and acting as staging grounds for large scale foreign operations.

The students that graduate in Konoha are sorted into teams of three selected by the Hokage based on their teachers' recommendations. They are assigned to a special jounin or a jounin who gives them the Genin Certification Exam which has a failure rate of over 66%. The parameters of the test differ for each teacher but they require the genin to achieve a specific objective whilst demonstrating their individual skills and working together as a team.

If they pass, they become an official team and get to work in the field. They spend the majority of their time training under an elite ninja and work for the village's clientele with D-rank and C-rank missions. They quickly earn field experience, develop thier skills and possess a good chance of being promoted within a few years.

If they fail, they are sent back to the Academy. They undergo a short period of remedial training after which they can choose to retake the certification exam, or join one of the village's divisions that handle the more mundane tasks that are needed to keep the village running and secure.

The Academy became a model that all other hidden villages followed when the effectiveness of its training became apparent. Each nation has their own lessons to teach but generally they all follow the same guidelines.

Shinobi Registration Books & Bingo Books/Hunter Ninja & Bounties (Knyght)

This is mainly from compiling the discussions about bounties and bounty stations.

Shinobi Registration Books & Bingo Books

Shinobi Registration Books are used by every hidden village and contains profiles for every one of their living shinobi. It gives a broad overview of who they are, what they are capable and what kind of mission history that have had. The book comes with different levels of classification depending on who is allowed to read them. For instance, the unclassified version is used to advertised the village's shinobi to the civilian populace who would request missions. At the other end of the scale, only the village leaders have access to the fully classified version which contains every single detail about their shinobi.

Bingo Books are similar to Shinobi Registration Books but are designed to contain enemy shinobi instead. Overall, they are meant to be records of every living shinobi worthy of recognition. They came into fashion during the First Shinobi War as a way for villages to keep track of powerful enemies that their shinobi are likely to meet on the battlefield.

The idea itself has existed for practically as long as shinobi having been warring with each other. Clansmen would spread the word of any truly dangerous individuals they had fought or witnessed amongst themselves, describing their appearance and skills so that they would be recognized on the battlefield. Children were even trained to memorize every other clan symbol to identify enemies by their marked clothing or armour.

As technology and the organization of shinobi evolved, this idea developed into something more expansive and official. Each village's intelligence division devoted their resources to collate all of the data they possessed on their enemies and released it as a book. They include the shinobi's name, picture, mission history, skills and any other relevant information. Particularly notorious ninja would be listed with any bounties and monikers they have earned.

Every village has its own book and its own listings as they would each have a different view of who the enemy might be. These books are distributed among their shinobi to keep them informed.

Hunter Ninja & Bounties

The first hunter ninja were those who made their living by pursuing shinobi who had earned bounties from their exploits. These bounties might have been offered by individual villages and towns, the government of a particular nation or by a ninja clan. The hunter-nin would track their target, kill them and offer their body to the offended party in exchange for money.

The role of hunter-nin expanded when the hidden villages came into being, particularly during the First Shinobi World War. There were still bounty hunters but whenever a hidden village assigned a ninja or team of ninjas to hunt down traitors, they would be dubbed as hunter-nin as well.

Ninja betraying their own had rarely been a problem prior to this because they stayed in their clans, working in close-knit groups that shared a bond of blood. The sheer scale of the villages and the evolution of warfare and espionage made the problem much more prevalent than before. Advancements in science and medicine were equally problematic as it became possible to discover a lot more information about certain abilities and skills by examining a shinobi's body post-mortem. Destroying the body of a traitor to avoid spreading village secrets became a requirement for the job.

The "Village of the Bloody Mist" became infamous in this regard as the rate of defection increased to the extent that an entire division of Anbu was devoted to working as hunter-nin. They specialized in tracking and eliminating their targets then erasing the bodies to protect their secrets from other villages.

In the modern era, when a ninja kills a criminal with a bounty posted by their own village, they deliver it directly upon their return and receive payment in exchange. When it comes from an allied village, they can take it to the village or one of their outposts or they can return it to their own village for it to be delivered.

However the situation becomes more complicated when a ninja kills a criminal that belongs to a non-allied village. Firstly, their home village would want to perform an autopsy to learn whatever secrets they can from the body. Then trying to give the corpse back to its people is a difficult and tense prospect when between enemies; it isn't particularly feasible to do this with any regularity.

As a result, when between non-allies the bounties are dealt with through exchange points instead. These are stations where criminals corpses are delivered to in exchange for their bounty money. Many countries host at least one of these exchange points. The workers verify the corpse's identity, gives the hunter-nin most of the bounty while keeping a percentage for themselves, and then transport the body to its village of origin.

These stations pay the bounty hunter for the kill, regardless of who it is or where it is based e.g. a bounty station in the Land of Fire would still for the corpse of a Konoha ninja if its delivered to them. They are technically independent from any hidden village regardless of where they are based.

Every hidden village is aware of all existing bounty stations and allow them to exist as they maintain a symbiotic relationship. It minimizes tension as ninjas are able to get paid without causing unnecessary conflict, the hidden village can delegate the entire process while keeping plausible deniability and they are better able to protect the secrets of their techniques.

The exchange points are essentially a kind of neutral ground. Everyone makes use of them so the hidden villages turn a blind eye as long as they do what they are meant to. Anyone who tries to interfere with them simply earn a sizable bounty themselves and the ire of everyone who makes use of the station. Most of the civilian populace doesn't even know they exist, the stations' buildings typically being designed to disguise their true purpose.

And the exchange points are trusted to manage the corpses of shinobi more out of self-preservation than anything else. If they fail to business in the way they are expected to for the sake of extra profit, the hidden villages would come down on them hard as punishment.

I like to imagine that there are also civilian versions of the bounty books. Instead of listing foreign shinobi, those would list a village's own ninja (scrubbed of any sensitive information of course) and sold in civilian retail stores and given out to clients and such. Famous ninja like Kakashi and Asuma would be actively advertised to the civilian population through those books to bring in more missions.

I have issues with the bounty stations. My biggest problem is that Konoha didn't tolerate the Fire Nation bounty station paying out for the corpse of a Fire Monk. Ibiki brought the fucker who ran the station in for interrogation for that. That would seem to imply that it's a criminal operation. But if they are "official", so to speak, then who violated the supposed symbiotic relationship there? Did Zangei overstep his bounds by paying out for Chiriku in some way (because he was a loyal Fire Nation warrior? Because he wasn't a ninja?)? Or did Konoha break their agreement with whoever presumably runs all the bounty stations because they wanted info on Akatsuki more than they valued staying on good terms with the bounty stations?

Also if Konoha tolerates the bounty station's work, why is the entrance to the bounty station hidden behind a urinal in the bathroom?

For your theory on the bounty stations to be true, they'd have to all be run by some incredibly honorable group whom basically everyone would trust completely to act as middlemen. Trust to destroy the bodies of dead ninja and not try to sell them on the side, trust to keep the corpses secure so they aren't stolen by third parties, trust their word that the target was actually killed without being delivered a body as proof. The only group I can think of who fits that bill are the samurai of the Land of Iron, and I have a hard time believing that Mifune is running an international accounting firm for assassins.

RE: The Naruversity

No need to imagine. Hiruzen mentions such a thing after Naruto takes his picture for the Shinobi Registration Book.

Zhangei was brought in specifically for his knowledge of Kakuzu, who's working for a criminal organization aligned against Konoha and had just killed one of the best ninja. Chiriku himself was only important to the extent that it provided the Akatsuki Suppression Team with a lead in their hunt. I'd say that the seriousness of the situation took precedence and Konoha was within their rights to bring him in, especially regarding missing-nin.

Keeping the actual exchange point hidden may be for the sake of anyone other than ninja. No need to advertise these places to the people. Or it could be that they're tolerated by the hidden villages but less so by the nation's actual government, so keeping the exchange points hidden minimizes any difficulties.

Any "trust" they have would be based on their self-preservation. They keep their noses clean and they don't get punished by shinobi, making a good profit off of this necessary evil. Failing that, the hidden villages, who know exactly where they are, would come down on them (and whoever else involved in the exact situation) like a ton of bricks so they stay on the level to stay in business. The ninjas probably would want to verify and destroy/retrieve the corpses themselves though to scratch that part out.

RE: The Naruversity

Scenario 1:
Village issues a bounty on a ninja.
Village(or allied) ninja bring proof of death to village.
Ninja get bounty.

Scenario 2:
Village places a bounty on a Ninja.
Not-allied ninja bring proof of death the Bounty Station.
Ninja get bounty minus a percentage.
Station bring proof of death to Village.
Station get bounty and gains the difference.
Ninjas are fine with that because that way they don't risk by approaching not-allied villages.
Villages are fine with that because that way they get more shit done with plausible deniability as bonus.

And then there are probably hidden "bonus" for certain targets: a ninja with some pedigree is likely to be wanted by many different villages.
Unsaid bonus, as well as actions are far from impossible.

Yeah, this makes sense. This system allows unfriendly villages to pay each other indirectly for bounties without losing face, as well as give each village a method for dealing with their missing-nin who are hiding in enemy nations without needing to trespass and risk starting a war.

My only problem with this is the fact that the villages apparently would also allow nearby bounty stations to pay for the corpses of their own loyal ninja and allies. That seems kind of insane. Would Konoha really tolerate a Fire Nation bounty station buying the body of an allied Fire Monk, or even the son of their own former Hokage? The stations would basically be encouraging foreign assassins to sneak into the Fire Nation by making it very convenient to drop off the corpse and get payed before a pursuit team can track them down. I would think that every village would at least agree that a loyal ninja's corpse should need to be taken to a bounty station located outside of it's home nation.

Also, now I'm curious as to how the bounty stations are run. Are they independently operated, or are there one or more franchises? Are they run by retired ninja and/or samurai? The bounty station Kakuzu visited seemed to have only the one guy working there - do they hire guards to protect the corpses and the money they keep on hand to pay out bounties?
