Missing Ninja/Wandering Ninja (Knyght)

I'm totally okay with ninja yakuza.

Missing Ninja

Missing Ninja ("Nukenin") are those who have gone rogue and abandoned their hidden village. Every missing-nin is at least guilty of the crime of permanently leaving their organization without permission from their superiors.

Upon defection, they are given ranks depending on the skill level of the individual that serves as a warning to others about how much of a threat they are. For instance, the average ninja would be classed as D-rank while one capable of contending with a Kage would be classed as S-rank.

These ninjas may have given up their loyalty to their hidden village and chosen to live elsewhere. These ninja could have disagreed with the restrictions their duties placed upon them and have wanted to find a life with more freedom, still using their skills and taking on missions but doing so under their own terms. They often work as hunter-nin as well, paying for their expenses by hunting other missing-nin or famous shinobi.

Or they could have decided to give up on the ninja lifestyle and choose entirely different careers, sometimes taking paths that take advantage of their abilities and other times picking something entirely divorced from their path. But just because they have given up their livelihood, they don't stop being considered criminals by their home villages and need to continue living in secrecy to stay uncaught.

Under rare circumstances, some ninja betray their own village to join another, usually enticed by the promise of wealth and authority in return for valuable information. It could be scrolls of secret jutsu, restricted information on their village's missions, detailed profiles on important ninja etc. With the right price, a ninja can essentially buy their way into the ranks of another hidden village.

And then there are those who committed a crime that forced them to flee from their home to escape imprisonment or execution. It's this type that typically comes to mind when people think of missing-nin. Their crimes could range from killing one of their comrades or fellow citizens, stealing secret information, assassinating targets outside of village-sanctioned missions and even worse acts.

Most ninja keep their original headband after defecting. Usually this is because it allows them to easily advertise the fact that they are a ninja to potential customers when they are looking for work, and wearing the headband can fool others into thinking that they are officially still part of their village instead of a criminal runaway. It's really only those who give up on the ninja life entirely or particularly fearful of pursuit that throw theirs away. Akatsuki actually has its member cut through their headband's village symbol upon being initiated to highlight their status as an independent mercenary group and their rejection of all hidden villages.

Finally, some missing-nin aren't truly such at all. As missing-nin have discarded all allegiances, their home village won't be held accountable for any actions they take. So by having a loyal shinobi officially designated as a missing-nin, the hidden village gains plausible deniability as their subordinate performs operations that otherwise would have had negative backlash on them. That said, these ninja understand that they would likely never be welcomed back to their hidden village for their actions.

Known Missing Ninja

Momochi Zabuza - Originally from the Hidden Mist, he was labeled a missing-nin around a year before his death when he led a rebellion against the Fifth Mizukage for the sake of his ambition to become Mizukage himself and restore the village to its "former glory".

Orochimaru - Originally from the Hidden Leaf, he was found performing inhumane experiments on ninja and civilians of the Land of Fire. After his escape, he went on to become one of the most infamous missing-nin in history as he built his own hidden village and used it to attack his former home, killing his old teacher the Third Hokage.

Sasori - Originally from the Hidden Sand, his only crime at the time was that he chose to abandon his village after the Third Shinobi World War. However he earned a fearsome reputation for the attacks he undertook around the Land of Wind and his bounty hunting as he searched for powerfuly potential human puppets.

Deidara - Originally from the Hidden Rock, his selfish obsession with his art led to him stealing and using the village's kinjutsu, then testing his new abilities out in his very own home as he chose to abandon it. He gained further infamily by joining various terrorists groups and using his talent for explosives to destroy priority targets and plunge cities and nations into fear.

Kakuzu - Originally from the Hidden Waterfall, he was the oldest living missing-nin and had been one for longer than anyone else as well. Once imprisoned for failing to assassinate the First Hokage, he murdered the elders of his village and stole the village's prized kinjutsu before escaping and spent so long as an outlaw that many thought of him as legend rather than fact.

Hidan - Originally from the Hidden Hot Water, he was responsibly for single-handedly killing everyone in the village in the name of his fanatical desire for slaughter. It was an event that immediately catapulted him into fame for the sheer scale of the massacre because of the popularity of the "village that had forgotten war" and yet, few had any idea of what he was capable of given much of an unknown he was beforehand.

Hoshigaki Kisame - Originally of the Hidden Mist, he was accused of plotting to overthrow his country's government and had assassinated a number of important individuals, including another nation's daimyo. These actions were truthfully ordered by the mastermind of Akatsuki for the sake of destabilising the region, particularly in damaging the Hidden Mist as it attempted to recover from the nightmare reign of the Fourth Mizukage.

Uchiha Itachi - Originally of the Hidden Leaf, he killed the entire Uchiha Clan on orders from the Third Hokage and his Honoured Advisors to prevent a coup d'etat. But the truth was kept hidden from the rest of the village and so it was necessary for him to flee and be labelled a heinous criminal. By having him become a missing-nin, Konoha could hide the impending betrayal of one of their greatest clans, avoid looking like monsters for the acts and created the opportunity for Itachi to join the powerful Akatsuki organization.

Wandering Ninja

Wandering Ninja ("Watarinin") were once those who had learned the ninja arts but didn't belong to any ninja clan. Someone who had been self-taught, learned from their parents or taught by an existing ninja. They worked and lived independently, possibly forming teams with ninjas in the same situation, but generally sought out their own missions contracts and hunted for bounties to earn a living.

Nowadays this label still applies to those individuals but is more commonly associated with ninja clans who do not and have not worked for a hidden village. When the first hidden village was built, there was an explosive surge in the number of alliances forged between ninja clans of each nation as they started building their own villages in response. But not every clan did so.

Some clans were unwilling to lose any of their independence by becoming part of such an organizations such as the Kaguya Clan of the Land of Water. Others were just unable to set aside their differences and work together for such an undertaking. And a few clans had earned a certain stigma for the way that they conduct warfare which caused them to actually be rejected from the villages they wished to join.

The wandering-nin - who are sometimes mockingly called lost-nin - quickly became a dying breed as the hidden village monopolized the industry of war and the independent ninja clans often got caught in the crossfire between them. The villages themselves don't appreciate the competition, especially since they are known to welcome missing-nin into their fold (albeit depending on the severity of their crimes). So when the opportunity arises, they might take the chance to remove or assimilate the clan.

Remnants still exist throughout the nations but within a few generations, they may well die out altogether.

Known Wandering Ninja

Kaguya Clan - This extinct clan was once native to the Land of Water and were renowned for possessing the Shikotsumyaku, their bone manipulating kekkei genkai. When the Village Hidden in the Mist first started to be built, the Kaguya had no desire to join the other clans and rejected every envoy with terms for an alliance. Their brutal and savage culture caused them to fiercely cherish their independence while treating other clans as inferior, making the concept of the hidden village repulsive to them. Unfortunately this attitude led to their downfall as the Hidden Mist became the dominant military force of the nation until the Kaguya felt so threatened that they led a suicidal attack on the village in the hopes of restoring their supposed supremacy. There was only one survivor and even he died before even reaching adulthood.

Fuuma Clan - This clan of shuriken jutsu specialists once resided the Land of Fire but were forced out by Konoha's growing monolopy of the ninja trade. Afterwards they mainly travelled between the countries with only minor hidden villages, often taking work in bounty hunting and assassination. They did settle in the Land of Rice Fields but that led to them being taken advantage of by Orochimaru when he established his control of the county.

Tenbin Clan - This is one of the clans that were rejected when they tried to join a hidden village. Prone to berserker rampages and disturbing transformations because of their innate ability to absorb natural energy, many clans feared them and didn't believe it would be possible to live in any kind of peaceful coexistence with them. As a result, they were another clan that ended up all but extinct by the time of the modern era until they were practically forgotten.

Lava Release v2 (Official Version)

Lava Release is an advanced nature transformation that combines fire and earth chakra to create volcanic substances. This chakra type can take on multiple forms depending on the nature of its composition and solidity, a versatility that is most prominently demonstrated by the differences in how it is wielded by shinobi of different nations.

Rock Style

This is the style of Lava Release as its most natural state. It takes the form of molten rock that can simultaneously burn and smash through any obstacles, just like the lava that flows beneath the earth.

Son Goku, the Four-Tailed Monkey, was its first and greatest wielder. Its immense power allowed it turn entire stretches of land into lava and raise up volcanoes to unleash disastrous eruptions. That power was thus shared with its jinchuuriki, gifting them all with Lava Release which allowed them to replicate its abilities on a smaller scale.

In addition to their jinchuuriki, the Hidden Rock has clan that use the Lava Release kekkei genkai as well. But instead of molten rock, they choose to manifest this ability as quicklime which corrodes the flesh and seals their enemies with cement-like mass or clouds of ash.

The most recent jinchuuriki, Roshi, was born with that Lava Release kekkei genkai which was then enhanced by Son Goku's power to make him incredibly talented with this chakra type. He specialized in the Lava Release Chakra Mode which surrounds his body in armour of molten rock, making him a walking titan of fiery destruction.

Cloud Style

The Hidden Cloud is another village fortunate enough to have a clan with this kekkei genkai. This clan manifests this jutsu style as a vulcanized rubber-like substance with the durability and flexibility to withstand and dissipate an opposing force, making it more well-suited for defence than other types. In fact, this version doesn't have many means of offense at all. That's why these clansmen are best suited for roles that involve capturing an opponent and providing protection for their teammates by creating defensive structures or craft distraction.

The current leader of the clan is Dodai who is well-known for this skills and serves as the Head Ninja of the Hidden Cloud.

Mist Style

Unlike the other hidden villages, Lava Release isn't native to the Hidden Mist and only one individual is known to have the ability. Terumii Mei, the Fifth Mizukage, uses this chakra type to create acidic mud like that which can be found in mud volcanoes. The mud flow that she generates is highly corrosive and capable of melting through almost anything. This acidity means that it's just as capable of burning through obstacles as the mainstream form of Lava Release, only accomplished through a different means. It's theorized by some that the difference between her version and others are the result of her affinity for Water Release, causing her to naturally adopt a version of "lava" that is more fluid in nature than most.

Many believe that the Fifth Mizukage is one of those individuals who spontaneously awaken a kekkei genkai instead of inheriting it i.e. a first generation bloodline holder and that this combined with the Boil Release inherited from her mother's clan. Truthfully, they are mistaken as her father was foreign shinobi with Lava Release that had a whirlwind romance with her mother when they were young. However no-one but Mei herself suspects as much.

RE: The Naruversity

I feel like there must be something special about Mei for her to have two bloodlines simultaneously. You'd think that if two different bloodline users can breed and create a child with both of them, then the villages would be exploiting this, and the various bloodline clans (or at least the advanced element ones) would all be intermarrying to try and create super babies of doom.

RE: The Naruversity

Mei may have been the one to open up the possibility in the first place. But clans seem a bit too divided to interbreed with one another; even non-bloodline clans would have some powerful offspring but having them learn both clans' secret jutsu but no-one appears willing to do so. And we're told that inheriting a kekkei genkai is something of a lottery, so even assuming that all it took was having two parents with the genes for one each (and not other limitations like both of them needing to have an active kekkei genkai or ones that share a chakra nature), actually inheriting both and then awakening both is probably quite a long shot.

Konan's Dance of the Shikigami (Knyght)

Knyght

The Collector
Amended the Wandering Ninja entry when I realised that there were some canon examples if I looked at clans instead of individuals.

Konan's Dance of the Shikigami (Official Version)

Konan of the Akatsuki has a unique ninjutsu style which manipulates and weaponizes paper.

Her teacher recognized her affinity for origami as a child and encouraged her to turn that artistic talent into an unorthodox weapon. She spent her entire life honing this skill and even held the hope that she would one day pass it down to her children and start a new ninja clan. The pinnacle of this jutsu style was her Dance of the Shikigami.

Konan uses yang chakra to physically transform her body and clothing into thousands of sheets of paper. She possesses instinctual control over every single sheet as they are essentially just an extension of herself. The jutsu actually made her one of the few shinobi capable of flight as she could control her movement through the air just like her paper.

This paper is innately stronger than any other kind. It can be as hard as steel without losing any of its flexibility, water runs off of its surface without soaking it and only the hottest fires can burn it. Konan's favored method of attack is to shape her paper into weapons such as spears or shuriken to assault her enemies, combining their toughness with speed and numbers. It's also well-suited for restraining her opponents as she can wrap them in enough sheets of paper that they are incapable of movement except for what she allows, levitating them along with the paper.

Her paper can even change its colour to camouflage itself against its surrounding. It stems from how Konan continues to look like a normal human being even when composed of paper as its perfectly replicates her true appearance. She can even create three-dimensional structures that look close enough to the real thing to fool most, allowing her to surround an enemy with weapons without them ever realizing.

A related skill is Konan's ability to inscribe sealing script directly onto her paper which she uses primarily to create her own explosive tags. Any sheet of paper can be made several times more deadly when she can turn it into a explosive as well. This in fact led to her deadliest jutsu which is capable of a level of destruction that few can match.

And as long as she has enough chakra to sustain the jutsu, she is more paper than flesh. In this state, she doesn't feel pain and is practically invulnerable to real harm since she lacks any kind of internal organs and any damage she takes can be ignored by creating more paper to replace her losses. The only way to truly defeat her would be to drive her to exhaustion to end the jutsu or destroy enough of her 'body' that she can't recover.

Related Jutsu

Paper Clone - Konan can create a perfect replica of herself from a paper. It functions with few differences from many other clone jutsu but it is able to separate itself into sheets of paper and recombine at will. Its most distinctive trait is that Konan can mix explosive tags into their bodies so that they can explode on her command.

Paper Person of God - Konan devised this jutsu to "Uchiha Madara" and his powerful space-time ninjutsu. The idea behind it was inspired by Hanzo of the Salamander who once disguised his explosive tags to ambush Nagato. Konan prepares billions of explosive tags and hides them within her chosen battlefield - utilizing her camouflage skills that even the Sharingan cannot see through to perfectly disguise them - then unleashing them at the opportune moment to to start ten minutes worth of continuous explosions.

RE: The Naruversity

Konan was a criminally underused character. She was easily one of the most powerful characters in the manga. Her invulnerability was greater than even Suigetsu's, and the sheer scale and virtually uncounterable power of her ultimate jutsu was kind of mind-boggling.

Seriously - Didn't the Paper Person of God jutsu canonically involve six hundred billion explosive tags? That's an absurd number of bombs!

It must have taken ages for Konan to prepare that many explosive tags. I wonder... was she doing it on Nagato's orders? Was he planning to betray Obito all along? Or did she prepare that jutsu behind Nagato's back? Perhaps because she realized that "Madara" was controlling his actions, and she was planning to free Nagato from his manipulations?

RE: The Naruversity

Didn't realise how much I'd lowballed the number of tags...

I'd prefer to think that she did it behind Nagato's back since it'd mean she showed some initiative and independence instead of being forever second to Yahiko and Nagato. Perhaps not out of the belief that "Madara" was controlling him but simply out of a sense of paranoia and her seriously considering the possibility that he would betray them.

RE: The Naruversity

I'm headcanoning Nagato implicitly trusted her to keep an eye on such things and plan accordingly.
She was basically Nagato's Danzou.

...dammit Danzou, you aren't even the best Danzou in the series! You just suck!

RE: The Naruversity

I'm looking at theories I've got in the works and I'm wondering if there were other parts of the Narutoverse worth expanding on?

- True History of Shinobi - A counterpart to my False History of Shinobi regarding what really happened over the past thousand years and beyond.
- Land of Water 3.0 - Final version of the history of the country and its hidden village now that no more information is ever likely to be released about it.
- Five Kages - The beginnings of the Kage system and all of the past Kages. Mostly it just gives me an excuse to throw ideas for the skills of those who got ignored. And throw in how I think Hashirama.
- Explosion Release/Boil Release - How it works. Should probably do Storm Release too. And make up the last two combos...
- Summons & Summoning - The nature of summon animals and the uses of the summoning jutsu.
- Sages & Senjutsu - Anything and everything about natural energy and senjutsu.
- Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation - Specifically the differences between the three versions.
- Orochimaru & Kabuto 2.0 - A doomed attempt to put their lives into a logical timeline.
- Anbu - Anything and everything about the organisation which will probably borrow heavily from Life in Konoha's ANBU. Root will probably tie into it as well.
- Sky Ward - Just a small bit about that abandoned city that ninja cats live in.
- Monkey King Enma - How he came to be Hiruzen's summon and why he turns into a big stick.
- Shinobi Village Ranks - Just carrying on what Altered Nova started with Genin & Special Chuunin
- Kaguya Clan - Their beginning, middle and end.
- Sarutobi Clan - Mainly to expand on that tiny mention of Konohamaru's parents.
- Hidden Rain/Hanzo the Salamander - Because one goes hand in hand with the other.
- Tailed Beasts and Jinchuuriki - The general powers of all jinchuuriki and the ones depending on the beast they contain.
- Naruto's Childhood - Something of a timeline and how things turned out how they did for him.
- Medical Ninjutsu - Some expansion on what's possible and some details on the Medic Corps.

Anything else that's probably worth doing? Or anything on this list that probably isn't worth doing at all? Most aren't much past the idea phase, really.

Boil Release v1 (Version 2)

Boil Release is an advanced nature transformation that combines fire and water chakra to raise the temperature of the chakra to its boiling point. As a result, the chakra enters a gaseous state and is released as steam.

When contained within the body, the pressure produced by the steam is used for extreme physical enhancement as the excessive energy being produced significantly boosts the wielder's strength and speed, while steam is released through their chakra points. The exact amount of force produced is proportional to the quantity of steam released, as the greater the volume of steam utilised, the larger the pressure that can be built up.

The Five Tailed Horse was the original wielder of Boil Release. By boiling its enormous chakra, Kokuo was able to reach unmatchable speeds as its raced across the lands while leaving massive clouds of steam in its wake. Its jinchuuriki gains this same ability and have all been known to be physical powerhouses.

When expelled from the body, the steam itself acts as a weapon with its heat and pressure capable of scalding flesh from bone. The bloodline clan who inherited this kekkei genkai took this even further by developing a method of changing the natural acidity of the vaporous chakra. Instead of just being steam, it becomes a corrosive mist that can eat its way through any obstacle and endanger anyon in its vicinity.

Known Users

Han - The latest of the Five Tails' Jinchuuriki, he enhances his Boil Release with an entire suit of metal known as steam armour. This armour has a furnace attached to the back which contains the steam released from his body, allowing him to build up more pressure without boiling more chakra to make him even more physically imposing. The metal also heats up from the raised temperature so the dangers of facing him in close combat are two-fold.

Terumii Mei - The Fifth Mizukage is one of the last to wield the acidic Boil Release and combines it with her equally acidic Lava Release to devastating effect. Any fight against her turns into one where the surrounding environment becomes a dangerous hazard as the enemy finds themselves surrounded by acid that, at first glance, appears no more harmful than mist while she is completely unimpeded.

Explosion Release (Official Version)

Explosion Release is an advanced nature transformation that combines earth and lightning chakra to generate explosive force. It uses the two opposing chakra natures to violently destabilize the composition of any substances it interacts with to cause an explosion. The more chakra used then the greater the force and scale of the explosion.

It it mostly commonly used to detonate the air around the caster's body to damage their enemies. They are able to direct the entire force of the explosion away from themselves to avoid harm while unleashing a devastating, often lethal, blow upon their opponents. Other uses of the kekkei genkai include transforming a target object into an explosive by infusing it with chakra which can be detonated when triggers, or releasing a tight beam of explosive energy that blows up upon contact with a solid surface.

The only known wielders of this kekkei genkai live in the Hidden Rock and are infamous for being the primary members of their Explosion Release, a division that specializes in every possible use of explosive and participate in missions requiring demolition.

Known Users

Gari - He was the leader of Iwa's Explosion Corps before his death. He specialized in combining Explosion Release with his taijutsu, generating explosions from his hands and feet as he strikes to supplement the physical blow with a destructive blast. His signature jutsu is the Explosion Release: Landmine Fist which actually turns his target into a explosive themselves, removing any chance of survival and making them a threat to their own allies.

Deidara - He brought a unique level of inventiveness to Explosion Release by combining it with his clay creations. This made him far more versatile than other wielders as the mobility and capability of his exploding clay allowed him to adopt tactics others could not, and yet he was still more powerful than the rest. His only weakness was that his obsessive artistic sense meant that he refused to use his explosion in any other way from that point on, leaving him vulnerable in regards to close combat where other Explosion Release wouldn't be. But as much as Onoki despised Deidara's for his actions, he couldn't help but think that he would have been a very powerful successor.

RE: The Naruversity

I'm actually still working on that Ninja Ranks entry, I've already revamped the genin entry and have nearly finished chuunin. Sorry it's taking so long.

I'm most interested in an entry about summons myself. There are so many unanswered questions about them.

Which summons are personal ones made with individual animals, and which ones are part of clan/tribe encompassing contracts?

Do summons die when defeated, or just return to wherever they came from? Or does it depend on the summon's reflexes (i.e. do they willing choose to poof just before the lethal blow is dealt?)

I noticed that although Sasuke is one of the only ninja that can summon more than one species, he's never summoned both hawks and snakes simultaneously. Are ninja normally limited to only being able to summon one species at a time? So Sasuke has to choose one or the other of his summon contracts at any given time, and most ninja don't bother to sign more than one contract because of that inconvenience? And Nagato is the only person who can summon multiple species simultaneously because he has the Rinnegan's Animal Path?

Can all summons refuse a summon if they are busy and send a substitute in their stead? And how exactly did Gamabunta do that, sending his son as a substitute? Do the toads have telepathy? Or was Gamakichi just automatically summoned as "second in line" and logically inferred that his dad must have refused the summoning?

Can all summons "reverse-summon" their summoner, or does it depend on the contract?

Is a summoning contract an actual contract? Like, an actual legal document that describes the terms and limits of the relationship between all involved parties that must be signed with blood to give it magical enforcement powers?

What's the deal with Tayuya's Doki? Are they actual demons, whatever that entails? Are they sentient? Where are they from? Why do they wear purple ropes around their waists like the Sound Four do? Are they serving her willingly or are they enslaved? Are they related to those even weirder Rashoumon Gates that Sakon & Ukon and Orochimaru summoned?

Danzou's Baku. What is that thing's story?

What are the differences between summoning actual flesh-and-blood creatures and summoning spiritual beings like the Shinigami? Are there other spiritual summons?

Do all summons reside somewhere in the same world, or is there some truth to the common fanon that they come from other dimensions (now that we know that is actually possible, having seen people being summoned across dimensions at the end of the manga.)?

What was up with Jiraiya summoning just a giant's Toad's esophagus? That organ apparently formed to the shape of the building it was summoned in, and Jiraiya was able to control it somehow. What the hell was that experience like for the Toad? Did it realize it's throat had been summoned? Did it have to hold it's breath until it's throat returned? Was the toad still connected to the organ and it just felt like a bunch of ninja had been teleported inside of it's throat?

Why do these various animal clans make pacts with humans that always seem to dramatically favor the humans? Lots of toads have risked their lives to protect and help Minato, Naruto and Jiraiya, as well as sharing their secret jutsu with them - what do they get in return for their loyal service? Is it a mutual protection pact and the humans just tend to need help far more often? Do the humans share jutsus and knowledge with the toads too? Do the toads only allow humans their Great Sage has approved of and willingly become subservient to those humans on account of them being "chosen ones"?

What about the Amplification Summoning Technique used by Nagato to give his dog summon the ability to multiply? Is that unique to Rinnegan users, or could other people potentially use that jutsu to make their own summons immortal? Is it a variation of the standard summoning jutsu, or does the unique summon have to be individually prepared for the jutsu somehow (body modification perhaps?)? Could a Toad use the jutsu to reverse-summon Naruto and give him the power to multiply? Are there other "summoning modification" jutsu that can be used to give summons a variety of different powers and physical modifications?

Edit: Also, are all summons "temporary"? That is, you summon them, they stay until you run out of chakra or their time limit runs out or the jutsu ends, and then they return home? Are there "one-way" summoning jutsu where the summon is simply brought to you and the jutsu ends, so they don't depend on the summoner to stay and can't be dispelled? ...Well I suppose that Naruto and company being summoned back to Earth from Kaguya's dimension must have been one-way, and Nagato summoning his Paths seems to have been permanent too, so I guess they do exist. In which case, are permanent summonings more difficult to perform than temporary ones, or is it just a choice the summoner makes when performing the jutsu?

Altered Nova said:

I've been thinking that the summoning jutsu could contain a failsafe that forces them to return when injured enough. Usually it's enough to save their lives but if they get hit too hard too fast then it's just a corpse that gets sent back.

I noticed that although Sasuke is one of the only ninja that can summon more than one species, he's never summoned both hawks and snakes simultaneously. Seems legit.

Can all summons refuse a summon if they are busy and send a substitute in their stead?
Perhaps only those of a certain level of power or intelligence. I can't imagine Itachi's crows doing that for instance.

And how exactly did Gamabunta do that, sending his son as a substitute? Do the toads have telepathy? Or was Gamakichi just automatically summoned as "second in line" and logically inferred that his dad must have refused the summoning?
Given how you can summon a suitable toad regardless of whether you have someone specific in mind or not, perhaps all of them can sense when a summoning's taking place and the intent behind it. Either the specified summon answers the call or the most suitable equivalent does. So Naruto's tries to summon Gamabunta, Gamabunta rejects the call and his son, the most immediate replacement, senses that and goes instead.

Can all summons "reverse-summon" their summoner, or does it depend on the contract?
The contract and the animals in question, probably.

Is a summoning contract an actual contract? Like, an actual legal document that describes the terms and limits of the relationship between all involved parties that must be signed with blood to give it magical enforcement powers?
From what we're shown, it's literally just a scroll by the name of the summoner and their blood. Once that's done, you can summon whoever you want.

It may be more of a case-by-case basis rather than rules for the group as a whole. They might help out if they want or if they get something in exchange, or they might tell you to piss off and never reappear after the first summon.

I'm totally okay with them being demons and are just another example of strange races that litter the Narutoverse, probably hidden away in one of the less explored regions of the world. I assume they're sentient but totally enslaved, hence the wrappings, and I suppose the robes could be to symbolize their loyalties.

I don't think they're related to the Rashoumon aside from helping the demonic theme that the Sound Four were sporting. I'd say they're something specific to Tayuya and her mysterious  - while the Rashoumon used by Sakon/Ukon, Orochimaru and Hashirama - given how they are intrinsically tied to her skillset.

Danzou's Baku. What is that thing's story?
A rare and powerful animal. I guess that other mythical creatures exist in the Narutoverse as well that come with their own legends but are actually real.

Do all summons reside somewhere in the same world, or is there some truth to the common fanon that they come from other dimensions (now that we know that is actually possible, having seen people being summoned across dimensions at the end of the manga.)?
Man, I certainly like to think so.

Was the toad still connected to the organ and it just felt like a bunch of ninja had been teleported inside of it's throat?
Something like this, I guess. Though given the bizarre space-time shenanigans we see with these toads, it may not find that remotely strange.

There's probably meant to be some kind of exchange going on entirely in the background. But I sometimes wonder if the apparent inequality is because of how the whole summoning thing started with Hagoromo once upon a time. Some kind of greater contract that he made that all summon animals adhere too.

Doesn't seem to be unique to the Rinnegan as it's listed as a B-rank ninjutsu and not kekkei genkai. It sounds like a variation of the standard summoning jutsu though perhaps it can only be cast on one summon at a time, hence why only the dog is shown with it. It's probably something only the one who signed the contract (or whatever equivalent) can do rather than the reverse. It's implied that other conditions can be set.

I figure it's more difficult to perform  and can only be applied to certain subjects, not just anything you've been contracted with it.

I don't think we can really say that with confidence. Whenever the Toad Summoning Scroll has been shown, only a very small portion of it is unrolled. Who knows what, if anything, is written on the hidden hundred or so feet of parchment. There's also a bunch of writing in the edge margin of the scroll, no idea what it says though.

Also, the Toads at least seem to have their own equivalent scroll with the names of all the toads written on it. Perhaps the Toad Summoning contract is actually a pair of scrolls, with the names of the human summoners on one scroll and the names of the Toads summons on the other?

Huh, I just noticed something weird. The first time the toad scroll was shown in chapter 92, there were three other names to the right of Jiraiya's (Naruto and Minato are to the left). When the scroll is shown again in chapter 409, there are only two names to the right of Jiraiya's. Is that a retcon?

Another thought I just had. Since the three other names were to the right of Jiraiya's and stop at the end of the scroll, (and Japanese is written from right to left), that would seem to imply that there have only ever been three other Toad Summoners besides Naruto, Minato and Jiraiya. But there are a lot more than three stone statues of the people who failed senjutsu training. Do the Toads allow non-summoners to attempt to learn Senjutsu? Or perhaps they filled up a scroll already and started over fresh with a new scroll just recently. Hmm...

It may be more of a case-by-case basis rather than rules for the group as a whole. They might help out if they want or if they get something in exchange, or they might tell you to piss off and never reappear after the first summon.
Well, we know there are at least some occasions where the summoning jutsu can control the actions of the summoned animal. For example, when Obito summoned Kurama inside of Konoha. That control had to be part of the summoning jutsu and not just an unrelated sharingan genjutsu, because Minato broke Obito's control by nullifying his contract with the Kyuubi using the Contract Seal jutsu.

RE: The Naruversity

I think Sasuke has exactly TWO summons: Aoda and Garuda.
He never signed the Snake contract, he could use them before due Orochimaru.

In the end, a summoning contract is nothing more than a two-ways summoning scroll.
Most ninja have, at best, a contract with one single animal, like Temari and I'm going to guess Guy(and possibly Sarutobi?). They become life-long partners.

A contract can have more than one animal on it: Kakashi's has half a dozen dogs, Sasuke has his two summons, rare because it's multi-species.

Multi-animal "human made" contracts seem quite uncommon: most multi-animal contracts are made by animal clans(Snakes, Toads).

Katsuyuu's contract is a particular case: it's technically a single-animal contract, but instead of summoning the whole animal it summons PART of the animal, depending of the chakra used. Tsunade and Sakura using both the power of the Byakugo could only summon around 10% of Katsuyu, which is SCARY.

Honestly, I was going by Jiraiya's attitude more than anything. He gives the kid the free reign to continually summon sentient creatures from their home without any words of warning. Supposedly he has a talk about not sending toads out to die horrible deaths and whatnot off screen but the scroll was just treated like a tool to let him cast the jutsu.

Or perhaps they filled up a scroll already and started over fresh with a new scroll just recently. Hmm...
Missing name's probably a mistake. It's easy to miss.

I'd have thought that it was some kind of ever-expanding scroll but in light of how unfilled it is, I'd assume this is the case. Having only five or so summoners over a millenium seems crazy small, especially given how easily it was passed down between the last few summoners as well as the implication made by all those frog statues.

I interpret that as the Contract Seal severing existing any connection between Kurama and its existing contractor with the Sharingan Genjutsu being broken as a result.

RE: The Naruversity

Basically Madara did extend the range of his genjutsu by having Kurama sign up a contract, forming a spacetime connection between them.

Óbito did likely add himself later. That's why Madara still had a connection to Kurama

Went on a fact-finding mission in preparation for Land of Water 3.0. I think this is pretty much everything we know about its history including evidence:

I didn't realize that Zabuza and Mei were so close to the same age and that they both graduated from the academy 17 years before the start of the series... wouldn't it be interesting if they had been genin teammates?

If Choujuurou is from the generation that didn't experience Kirigakure's upheaval, then presumably that means that Mei was already Mizukage by the time he graduated from the academy. He's nineteen in Part 2, and most ninja graduate between 9 and twelve (his exact graduation age is never given)... so my guess would be that Mei took control of the village at least 2 to 5 years before the start of the series.

So Mei was probably the Mizukage that Zabuza attempted to assassinate. Which fits his personality - I don't think the "Demon of the Mist" would have been a big fan of Mei's kinder and gentler vision of Kirigakure.

Indeed not. The implications of Choujurou profile were rather pleasing since Zabuza trying to assassinate Mei always made far more sense.

It brings up some interesting thoughts about Suigetsu's situation too. He's actually two years younger than Choujurou yet was known as a sadistic little bastard who went on "cruel missions" regularly with his "gruesome" brother. He might have graduated unusually young given his prodigious status and spent a good chunk of his early career in the Bloody Mist era.

Like Zabuza, he doesn't seem at all suited for the new Hidden Mist. Given his rankless status, perhaps he was already a missing-nin when he was captured after leaving the village when his brother died. It'd explain his lack of interest in actually returning to his home village, how he doesn't care about attacking the Kage Summit in spite of the obvious repercussion (he suggests it, infact) and his rather crap lifestyle in the future. He may have intended to reform the Seven Ninja Swordsmen by collecting all the swords and turning it into an independent mercenary organisation with himself as the leader, rather than simply joining the existing one in Kiri.

Poor Mei. But yeah, that'd be one hell of a backstory.

RE: The Naruversity

Zabuza's attempted coup was actually him trying to assassinate Mei to try to escape her yandere personality

RE: The Naruversity

My new headcanon - Witnessing Zabuza slaughter over a hundred academy students just because he could (remember, he wasn't even a ninja) and get *rewarded* for his insane, wasteful cruelty by Yagura is what inspired to Mei to become Mizukage herself so she could reform the village.

Suigetsu would have had to have graduated at five or six to be able to spend at least two or three years doing missions in order to develop a reputation as the next Demon of the Mist. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with him graduating that young, as that would put him in the same company as Kakashi and the Sannin, and he's clearly nowhere near their level... hmm. Perhaps he started off as a prodigy but his talent plateaued early? That might explain why he was so interested in those swords - his brother mastered them all, and he was desperate to prove to people that he wasn't a disappointment and that he was just as good as his brother.

Personally, my biggest issue with Suigetsu is that his supposed cruelty and bloodthirstiness is mostly an informed trait. We certainly never see him chopping off limbs, he lectures Sasuke to be nicer to animals after Manda's death, he's perfectly fine with not killing people on Sasuke's orders and even calls Sasuke out for killing some samurai, he heroically jumped in front of a fucking bijuu-dama to protect his teammates, and he bizarrely turned into a cowardly comic relief near the end of the manga . And after the epilogue he became a medical assistant and was legitimately nice to Sarada. Is this guy really supposed to be the second coming of "Zabuza the Devil"?

Another motivation - almost all the Swordsmen had defected. If he went rogue himself he'd have more freedom to hunt them all down.

RE: The Naruversity

Maybe he was captured early and had no chance to develop all his potential, all while maturing during his confinement? I mean, he was Orochimaru's assistant later, but what happened to him before being stuck in that pod again?

RE: The Naruversity

Suigetsu got lost on the road of life. Spending who knows how long imprisoned by Orochimaru for experimentation and then being caught in Sasuke's wake upon freedom could excuse his diminished bloodlust and potential.

His prodigious talent seems specifically to refer to killing people so he may not be any kind of real prodigy such as characters like Kakashi or Itachi, but someone who really enjoyed murdering people from a young age. Even graduating young for Suigetsu when it's post-Third War could just be nine years old or so since it's probably peacetime which gives him time for the people of his village to see the resemblance to Zabuza.
