Kekkei Genkai Classification

Elemental Kekkei Genkai: Transforms chakra into two different natures simultaneously and combines them to create a new chakra nature e.g. combining earth and fire chakra to create lava.

Corporeal Kekkei Genkai: They grant limitated control over a specific aspect of the holder's physiology e.g. controlling the growth of bones.

Visual Kekkei Genkai: More commonly known as doujutsu, they grant the holder's eyes special abilities e.g. seeing chakra on a visible spectrum.

Sakon and Ukon's Kekkei Genkai v2 (Version 3)

This corporeal bloodline limit allows the user to control cells within the limitations of normal human physiology. Itâ's an unusual bloodline limit where everyone who has it is born with an identical twin. One twin is always fused inside the other from the very beginning, spending the early years of their life almost constantly inside their sibling. Even after learning to completely separate themselves from their twin, they spend most of their life merged.

The dormant twin is move freely inside of their sibling and can protrude any part of their body from anywhere on the dominant twin's body e.g. unmerging their head to cover their twin's blind spots or unmerging their hands and feet to launch a three-handed punch or kick. They can empower a jutsu with their combined chakra and control, perform them independently from one another and even do separate jutsu simultaneously.

This bloodline can be used to consciously heal any physical injuries without the use of medical ninjutsu by stimulating cell division. The speed and extent of the healing depends on the skill of the individuals but it can reach a level where they essentially possess regeneration, able to rapidly heal anything except lethal wounds. They can even instruct their cells to strengthen in response to the damage they receive such as having tougher skin after being cut by a sword or gaining greater resistance to heat after being burned by a fire jutsu. The twins can heal themselves individually but it works best when they are merged and are sharing their chakra.

At the more advanced stages of the bloodline limit, they can construct and deconstruct cells and proteins of their own body and the body of others through ninjutsu.

One such technique is their ability to deconstruct their body on a cellular level and enter an opponent's body. At that point they are able to alter the cells and proteins of the target at will, effectively killing them, and then leaving the target to reconstruct their own body again. This technique, however, has the disadvantage of them taking the same damage as the body they had invaded. An alternative use of this can done so that the bloodline holder fuses with the target but, instead of killing them, they heal their injuries by constructing cells where they have been damaged.

Another technique is how they can merge the cells of multiple people together inside them without surgery or risk of antibody rejection. One purpose of this is to rearrange their own cells to shape shift into a copy of that person for a disguise that surpasses the Transformation Technique. The other is to partially unmerge that body from the twins', to reanimate the body with their chakra and to then have that body use the same jutsu they wielded in life.

Juugo's Kekkei Genkai

[Addendum: The Fourth Databook has not given Juugo a Kekkei Genkai characteristic and his jutsu do not have Kekkei Genkai in their classification, so his abilities cannot be a Kekkei Genkai.]

This bloodline limit allows the holder to passively absorb natural energy and manipulate biomass. This natural energy constantly mixes with their physical and spiritual energy to produce senjutsu chakra. Unlike regular humans and animals, they do not need to stay still to absorb natural energy and are not vulnerable to petrification. Unfortunately, this has two side-effects; instead of petrifying, they go into murderous rages when there is too much natural energy in their body, and they cannot instinctively sense and control natural energy meaning that, without training, they cannot control these rampages.

This natural energy gives them the ability to transform all or parts of their body for a number of purposes. They can increase the size of their fists, extend the length of their arms, shape their flesh into natural weapons, transform their skin into dermal armour and grow new limbs from their body like horns, wings and tails.

They can even extend booster-like appendages from their body, concentrating their chakra pathways in the extension so that they can fire jets of chakra through them. This act as propulsion to fire the bloodline holder through air or increase the velocity of their attacks, or it is offensive attack made of destructive beams and bolts.

The bloodline holder's biomass manipulation enables them to absorb the flesh, organs and chakra of humans and animals through physical contact. This is usually done to replenish their own flesh and chakra when injured or weakened. They can also do the opposite and transfer their biomass or chakra to others to heal them but the nature of their power means they can usually only do this with those who possess their DNA.They can even absorb the flesh of one person and integrate it into the flesh of another person, typically as a safer method of healing an injury though it is harder to apply.

Their full body transformation is the equivalent of Sage Mode, causing them to adopt a demonic appearance where are all of their physical capabilities are significantly enhanced to turn them into a destructive weapon. However whilst they can use partial transformation without losing their minds, a full body transformation guarantees that they go on a rampage where they kill everyone around them.

And finally, a little known fact is that individuals with this bloodline limit are attuned with nature in such a way that they can instinctively befriend and communicate with animals, enabling them to use them as helpers or companions.

Samurai v1 (Version 2)

The samurai originated from a group of fighters who worshiped the Sage of Six Paths as a warrior rather than a monk after ninshu was turned into the weapon known as ninjutsu. They honed their chakra purely for the sake of combat, devoting themselves to martial might.

Instead they strengthened their bodies and developed sword styles that took advantage of the possibilities that chakra provided. They only used it to enhance their bodies beyond normal limitation and didn't use ninjutsu themselves. Instead they devoted themselves to training their body and mastering the way of the sword and other weapons. This wasn't out of discrimination towards ninjutsu but because of their desire for melee combat and the belief that this was the path to true strength.

The samurai created a code of honour to follow, taking on a higher purpose as they became the protectors of the people and served the feudal lords of each nation. As such, they were the largest fighting force in the lands.

While ninjas were mercenaries who performed special missions for whichever lord was willing to pay, the samurai worked only for their lord as their personal army. Samurai were far stronger in battle as shinobi had not developed elemental affinities, bloodlines or many of the powerful jutsu that exist today. This was the status quo of the world for many generations. But where ninjutsu advanced and evolved, the skills of the samurai underwent little change. They were complacent and their techniques stagnates while the ninja pushed the boundaries of chakra. Eventually a power shift occurred as the combination of power, versatility and adaptability of shinobi became more desirable. They became the main fighting force on the continent whilst the samurai were little more than their lord's bodyguards.

The creation of the hidden villages finally rendered the samurai obsolete as ninjas became the military of each country. Many samurai gave up their profession and became ninja and samurai schools became ninja schools instead; most ninja swordsmen in the present day have styles that originated from the samurai. As the Shinobi World Wars changed the scale of war altogether, it became clear that the samurai were a dying breed. But instead of allowing themselves to become nothing more than a footnote in history, they chose to carve their own niche into the continent.

They chose to create the Land of Iron.

It was a military nation with a harsh climate where their leaders and army would all be samurai. The samurai left in every nation flocked to this cause to create one of the most racially diverse countries for all its small size. They removed themselves from the affairs of shinobi and resisted any attempt of invasion, eventually became a neutral ground.

This was also beginning of their advancement in the art of warfare. Whilst they didn't use many of the jutsu belonging to shinobi, they learned to recognize, understand and counter them so that they could never be caught off guard. With their single-minded focus on kenjutsu and taijutsu, the average samurai is physically superior to the average shinobi.

They once wore the same armour and used the same weapons as shinobi but now the two fighting class went in significantly different directions. Their metal armour that covers them from head to toe with heavy protection, specially forged to have resistance against ninjutsu and genjutsu. Their helmets contained gas masks, light sensitive lenses, sound dampeners to circumvent ninja tricks such as poisons, flash bangs and explosives. They also captain inbuilt radio to communicate and coordinate with one another and telescopes to see through tough conditions.

Katana became outdated and were instead used as training tools for a recruit to familiarise themselves with before their real training began. Now the samurai armed themselves with four, chakra-conductive short swords. Shorter swords were more convenient, practical and versatile as these samurai fought by extending chakra from their swords and shaping them into different weapons. They drew together the sword styles of all different clans and schools that had gathered to create a superior, unified style. They learned to master chakra flow, shape transformation and nature transformation and then combined them with techniques for using one, two swords, short swords, long swords or even other melee weapons. This sword art became known as the Iron Sword Style.

Ultimately, the Samurai Legion became the greatest example of brute force military might on the continent and no other nation dared to cross them.

A History of Certain Clans and Shinobi

Yuki Clan - The Yuki were feared as one of the strongest ninja clans of the Land of Water. Their instinctual control over wind, water and ice whilst living in an island nation naturally granted them superiority over most other shinobi in the region.

Assured of that superiority, they rejected the idea of an alliance with other ninja clans to form Kirigakure and remained independent. Unfortunately, they were one of the clans that was turned into a scapegoat as the cause of the civil war that had plagued the Land of Water, used to unite the islands against a common enemy. As the fiercest and strongest, the Yuki were struck hard as the entire land and its people turned against them. They were brought to near-extinction and they scattered, going into hiding to avoid revealing their kekkei genkai. The downfall of such a powerful ninja has remembered them as the cursed Yuki Clan.

Kaguya Clan - The Kaguya were a ninja clan of the Land of Water who possessed the most perfect and powerful bodies of all as a result of their kekkei genkai, the Shikotsumyaku. They were warmongers whose only joy was through battle and death, and they can only find inner peace on the battlefield.

Like the Yuki Clan, they refused to become a part of Kirigakure. They then became the main evidence for the discrimination against kekkei genkai since they had a bloodthirsty attitude to match their terrifying abilities. They fought back against the Land of Water with all their might and avoided their extermination which only served to reinforce the fear the populace had for them. As Kirigakure's influence in the Land of Water grew, the Kaguya's weakened as they received fewer willing to hire them.

In their desperation and desire for war, they chose to launch an all-out offensive against Kirigakure. Without any allies, the assault failed completely and the Kaguya Clan was wiped out. The only known survivor was the youngest and most talented of the clan, Kimimaro, who was saved by Orochimaru for his own purposes.

Fuuma Clan - This clan is a group of shurikenjutsu specialists who are well-known for their aggression and gained infamy when they invented the fuuma shuriken, a large shuriken with four, collapsible blade. Unfortunately, a conflict with the Uchiha Clan prior to the formation of the hidden village had their techniques copied and even improved upon by the Sharingan. The secrets behind the fuuma shuriken's design were spread and the Fuuma Clan lost its fearsome reputation.

They were also among the clans who never joined a hidden village and remained independent even up until the present day as nomadic mercenaries. This backfired when many of the clansmen were captured by Orochimaru and Otogakure for his experiments, not having the allies and protection of a hidden village themselves. But the sacrifice of Fuuma Gen'yuumaru, the latest clan head, when he became Orochimaru's vessel was able to win their freedom.

Akado Clan - The Akado are an extinct clan that were wiped out before the formation of the hidden villages. They possessed a kekkei genkai that allowed them to absorb chakra by sucking out an opponent's physical and spiritual energy through physical contact. They were feared and desired for this power that made them deadly effective ninja, able to wear down any enemy that drew too close. But as is often the fate of clans which particularly powerful abilities, they were destroyed for it. The clan was broken and scattered. In the present day there are people all over the continent, seemingly unrelated, who are actually descendants of this clan and possess that power. Akado Yoroi, who chose to adopt their clan name as his own, and Jiroubou of the Sound Five are examples of this.

Tsuchigumo Clan - The Tsuchigumo are the clan that Kidoumaru of the Sound Five herald from. They are a mercenary clan from the mountainous regions of the Land of Stones. They developed their hijutsu to mimic the properties of the large spiders that lived within that land and whom they allied themselves with, learning to use their bodily fluids to produce webbing and other sticky materials. They even went so far as to alter their bodies with kinjutsu so that they had six arms and a third eye, a physical mutation that was passed down to their children. Kidoumaru chose to leave the clan to find his own fortunes and was discovered by Orochimaru.

Futagoza Clan - The Futagoza are the clan that Sakon and Ukon of the Sound Five herald from. They are affiliated with Kusagakure, specialize in assassination and are recognized as the village's best fighters. They have a corporeal kekkei genkai that grants them control over their cells and causes every clan member to be born with an identical twin who shares their body. Sakon and Ukon are bastards who were abandoned by their victimised civilian mother who could no longer stand the freakishness of their abilities.

Shiin Clan - The Shiin are the clan that Tayuya of the Sound Five herald from. They are an unusual example of shinobi as they are also a nomadic caravan of musicians. They travel between villages, towns and cities and perform at each location for money, even participating in festivals or taking requests for local lords. This is often where they meet clients for shinobi missions or they use the musical performances as a front for their mission. Their musical ability forms the base of their fighting style which is the use of musical instruments to use sound-based genjutsu and ninjutsu. Tayuya was a prodigy of their clan, holding the most music talent and capable of using their spirit worm hijutsu, and was given the rights to their Doki summons. She left in search of power and found it in Orochimaru at the cost of her free will.

The Akado Clan is based on the name of Akado Yoroi, the Shiin Clan is based on an anime-only clan from the Menma Arc and the Futagoze and Tsuchigumo Clans are entirely of my own creation. The Yuki, Kaguya and Fuuma Clans are canon, though the Fuuma Clan have been fused with the anime-only version from the Land of Rice Fields Arc.

Land of Water v2 (Version 3)

The Land of Water is an archipelago nation floating on the ocean with a very unique culture. It's completely surrounded by water, with most of the land occupied by steep mountains. The smaller islands around the main island each have their own traditions, and many citizens stubbornly insist on preserving these.

When the hidden villages were created, Kirigakure was built on the main island and fostered the same relationship with the feudal lord as the other villages. The First Mizukage defeated the seven strongest samurai of the land who each wielded unique blades and made them swear loyalty to him. They became the Seven Mist Swordsmen, the strongest fighting force of the village and answer only to the Mizukage. They sharpen their teeth to promote the unity of their group and pass down their swords to the next generation to keep the group alive.

But the divided nature of the nation meant that it wasn't able to draw together all of the ninja clans like the other Great Hidden Villages. The most prominent of these clans were those blessed with bloodline limits. The bone-wielding Kaguya, the acid-breathing Ashido and the ice-manipulating Yuki; clans who were easily capable of standing alone even in the new era.

The lords and nobles of the islands remained in conflict with one another and caused the nation to be subjected to endless civil wars. They would hire ninja from independent clans, shinobi organisations and Kirigakure to wage war against each other with the civilians caught in-between. Naturally these civil wars made it difficult for them to remain as strong as their competitors, causing them to become more brutal and ruthless than the other hidden villages. Only during the Shinobi Wars did these separate groups band together against outsiders with the sea acting as their protection against enemy nations.

Naturally, the bloodline limit carriers gained the most terrible reputation as their inherent, disturbing abilities garnered fear and envy from the rest of the populace. The blame for the civil wars was pinned on them and they were treated as the bringers of misfortune, scapegoats to help unify the nation by turning them against a common enemy. Whilst hijutsu-using clans like the Hoozuki possessed unusual abilities it was offset by the knowledge that anyone could learn the same skills and that they had allied with Kirigakure from the start, keeping them free from the same prejudice.

When the civil wars came to a close, the Yuki and Ashido were destroyed as everyone turned against them and those who remained were forced to hide their bloodline to escape death. Even their offspring were not safe, regardless of whether they became ninja. The Kaguya's strength and bloodlust earned their survival to begin with but they later destroyed themselves in an attempt to destroy Kirigakure and prove themselves superior.

Only those who were willing to join Kirigakure gained any sort of reprieve. In the rest of the land they were hated and hunted unanimously, but the hidden village was willing to use them as assets if they worked for them. They were safe from extreme persecution but their lives were not ideal as even ninja held a mixture of contempt and fear for their ability, earning them a position similar to second-class citizens as they were treated as dangerous weapons.

The reign of the Fourth Mizukage was the darkest period of Kirigakure's history where they became known as the Village of the Bloody Mist. Yagura was one of the youngest Kages in history and, curiously, maintained a child-like appearance even into adulthood. This contrasted his reputation as the most powerful and ruthless Mizukage ever who, after the failed attempt to use the Sanbi against Kiri, sealed the Bijuu inside himself and tamed its power to become a perfect jinchuuriki.

During his term the village saw witness to death battles as their graduating exam, the highest defection rate that led to the creation of the Hunter Division of ANBU, the cutting off of all diplomatic relations with other nations, the complete slaughter of the Kaguya Clan and endless infighting. The graduation exam was perhaps the most infamous example and whenever people think of the Bloody Mist Village, they think of the exam along with the nine-year old Momochi Zabuza who put an end to the practice when he wiped out an entire class.

The downfall of the village fuelled suspicions that Yagura might have been under someone's control to deliberately keep their nation destabilised, suspicions that were eventually validated by Ao.

This created the seeds of a revolution with Terumi Mei at its head, with a desire to better their internal policies, improve the lives of bloodline limit holders and re-establish diplomatic relations. In the end, Yagura was dethroned and Mei became the Fifth Mizukage. Tired of the infighting and ruthlessness of the Bloody Mist, many ninja were happy with the change. However they were some who preferred the old regime. Kisame assassinated the feudal lord and took subversive machinations against the state, Zabuza led a rebellion against her to become Mizukage and the rest of the Seven Mist Swordsmen defected, bringing the organisation to an end. Hoozuki Mangetsu, one of Kiri's greatest prodigies, hunted down several of the traitorous swordsmen and killed them to retrieve their swords until he too died in battle.

Mei's attempts to change Kirigakure was hampered by the traditionalists, the country wide prejudice against bloodline limit carriers and the distrust between ninjas and civilians of the Land of Water. But by the present day she has come a long way and, in contrast to her predecessor, she is the most loved and respected Mizukage to date.

Land of Whirlpools and Waves (Official Version)

The Land of Whirlpools was a small island to the east of the Land of Fire. It was home to the Uzumaki Clan, a clan descended from the Sage of Six Paths and the foremost experts of fuuinjutsu. After the hidden villages were formed, the Uzumaki Clan created Uzushiogakure by taking small clans and clanless shinobi under their wing to increase their power base. They had a good alliance with their distant relatives, the Senju, but chose to keep the island nation as their home rather than move to become a part of Konoha. The Uzumaki were essentially the rulers of the Land of Whirlpools.

But their prowess with fuuinjutsu caused them to become greatly feared during the Shinobi World Wars. This was only worsened by their unusually long lives since the nature of fuuinjutsu meant that their elders can use it just as effectively as those in their prime, but armed with a greater well of knowledge and experience.

By the conclusion of Second Shinobi War, Uzushio and the Uzumaki were destroyed. The survivors were scattered as they fled their homeland, fearing that the rest of them would be hunted for their knowledge. The Land of Whirlpools was left ravaged and bereft of all leadership and shinobi presence.

Eventually, the island nation began to recuperate as victims of war sought out a land that would keep them out of the way of conflict. Without Uzushio, the Land of Whirlpools held little value and was isolated enough that there was no reason for shinobi to go there. As the settlers came and built atop the ruins of the hidden village, the island was renamed the Land of Waves to signify its new beginnings.

It actually managed to become a prosperous, little country through shipping. But this changed when the wealthy shipping magnate, Gatou, seized control of their shipping industry through money and violence. He gained a monopoly on all business traffic and the entire country entered poverty, including the feudal lord.

But a year later, Gatou was killed and a bridge was built from the Land of Waves to the Land of Fire which served as a major boost to the economy. The country managed to become more prosperous than ever before.

Ninja Monks (Knyght)

Knyght

The Collector
Made some minor edits to the Land of Water and Samurai (now Land of Iron) profiles.

Ninja Monks (Official Version)

The Ninsou are shinobi who live as monks and are a branch of chakra wielders that originate from Ninshuu and share similar ideals to the Sage of Six Paths. They believe in promoting peace and the peaceful study and practice of chakra, so they travel the land to teach and aid others. Instead of using ninjutsu to harm, they use it to help and protect others only such as elemental ninjutsu to avert disasters or medical ninjutsu to heal the sick.

But they are not complete pacifists. They are willing to take up arms against any foe that threatens to disturb the peace of their homeland, and their pilgrimages often involve protecting villagers and travellers from bandits, beasts and shinobi. Once upon a time, it was even considered the duty of ninsou to combat the threat of the Bijuu when they brought calamity upon the world. In several cases, the first jinchuuriki after the hidden villages were monks such as Bunpuku of the Hidden Sand who willingly made the sacrifice, and the Hidden Cloud's Turtle Island even holds a temple for the Nibi and Hachibi.

In combat, they use taijutsu and fuuinjutsu. Mastery of taijutsu hones the body and mastery of fuuinjutsu hones the mind is their belief. Using taijutsu means that they are not defenceless against their enemies without betraying their principles of using ninjutsu for violence. It was even a ninsou who first discovered and named the Eight Celestial Gates. And whilst fuuinjutsu is a branch of ninjutsu, many of its jutsu are ideal for creating protective barriers or incapacitating an opponent without causing undue harm.

The ninsou are the only chakra wielders who still practice Ninshuu from the time of the Sage of Six Paths himself. As was the original purpose of chakra, they can connect their spiritual energy with other so they can understand another person's heart without speech; a part of history that is known by few outside of shinobi monasteries. They mastered this ability and communicate with each other with this method, creating a remarkably peaceful society amongst themselves. Some monasteries have made speech a taboo and only ever communicate through this method.

The Fire Temple is the most famous monastery of ninja monks and there are several reasons for this. One is the Senju and Uchiha Clans' veneration of their ancestors which tied into the tale of the Sage of Six Paths, another is Senju Hashirama's support during his tenure as the First Hokage due to his great respect for their ideals, and the last is the former custom of at least one of the Twelve Shinobi Guardians being a monk from the Fire Temple.

But the greatest reason is the ability known as the Gift of the Sages and can be considered the next stage of Ninshuu. Only a few possess this talent and persistent training to use but it is quite formidable. Through enlightened understanding of spiritual energy and the connected knowledge and spiritual power of a group of people working together, they create a special kind of chakra through which they can understand the shape and nature of chakra within a ninjutsu and then break it down into its component energies. It is essentially an anti-ninjutsu jutsu that promotes co-operation and friendship like the Sage spoke of, used to protect the user against most technique and shield the temples from harm.

It isn't necessary for the Gifted to work in a group but the more people who work alongside them, then the more powerful the Gift becomes. These monks often receive the highest positions within the monastery such as Chiriku of the Fire Temple, the strongest of their ninsou, who became the head monk.

The true mechanics of it is their greatest secret. But even if they knew, ninja who typically use their spiritual energy by connecting it with their own physical energies to produce chakra would find this to be one of the most difficult arts they could ever master.

Despite what most would think, ninsou have a cordial relationship with ninja. They are not blind to the reality of the world and recognize the need for warriors to defend their lands. And they do believe that one day ninja will finally disarm themselves and find peace. This opinion is not unanimous, of course, but ninja monks rarely involves themselves in politics and wars so there is no real problem beyond differing personal opinions.

But not all ninsou are peaceful.

There are the Jashinists worship the evil god Jashin, meaning Wicked Heart, who expects all of his followers to bring nothing less than utter destruction and death. They are a cult of evil, hedonistic ninsou discovered how to use Ninshuu to share all sensations of pain and pleasure between them. This caused them to all become sadists and masochists, to practice self-mutilation, torture and genocide as acts of worship and spurred them to invent immortality jutsu so they could abuse that power to its utmost without dying and revel in ecstasy even on the battlefield.

And there are the Shinjuuists who worship the Bijuu - whom they called Shinjuu, meaning Sacred Beasts - and believe that their purpose is to bring destruction down upon the unworthy and unjust. They vilify Hashirama and Madara for taming the beasts, and have been known to try and kill the jinchuuriki to release their captives back into the world.

These are nevertheless the minority and can rarely be considered a true threat.

Hyuuga Clan (Knyght)

Knyght

The Collector
Now for that ass-backwards clan that got pushed to the wayside. The mechanics of the Caged Bird Seal actually come from something Lord Raine wrote a long while back.

What's up with Hinata not being branded with the seal anyway? It's like they're just giving the Byakugan away.

Hyuuga Clan (Official Version)

The Hyuuga are one of the four clans said to have descended from the Sage of Six Paths and are distant relatives of the Uchiha Clan. They are most famous for their Byakugan, one of the Three Great Doujutsu, and their Gentle Fist taijutsu style.

Their visual bloodline limit enables them to see chakra on an intricate level, through solid obstacles, across great distances and in a 360 degree direction. In a time where shinobi fought in the shadows, this made the Hyuuga invaluable as scouts and bodyguards since few can escape their sight.

But as ninjutsu advanced, the inherent advantage they held over the other clans was lessened slowly but surely. They sought a new way to grow stronger and that resulted in the Gentle Fist. While everyone else has to rely on feeling and intuition when controlling their chakra, the Hyuuga can see exactly what they are doing for themselves. Through this they could attain perfect chakra control and they soon combined it with the ability to see a person’s chakra pathways.

The basis of the style is for the Hyuuga to gather chakra into their hands and then release it in a single, controlled burst directly into the opponent’s chakra pathways the moment they touch their body. The foreign chakra spike damages the pathways and through that, the surrounding flesh and organs. The next stage involves perceiving and jabbing the chakra points of the pathways to disrupt an opponent's chakra flow to remove their jutsu or incapacitate them. By aiming for the chakra point of the heart, they can even kill with a single blow.

The Gentle Fist was soon recognized as one of the deadliest taijutsu styles in existence and has lost none of its notoriety by the present day.

Unfortunately, the reputation of the Hyuuga meant that their secrets were highly sought after. Since the Byakugan was so easily awakened in their clan and could be used easily even by someone not of their bloodline, the Hyuuga suffered from theft and grave-robbing more than any other clan. They were beset by enemies on all sides who wished the tear them down.

To protect themselves, they created the Caged Bird Seal. The Caged Bird Seal works by causing a cascade feedback loop upon the death of the wearer, destroying their entire chakra coil system, and disintegrating their chakra points. This renders the corpse completely worthless in stealing the Byakugan or any of its secrets from their body.

The clan was split into the Main House and Branch House. The Main House became the rulers who governed the clan and did not participate in mission or warfare except in most dire circumstances. Because of this, it was their duty to devote their time to training, mastering every aspect of and pushing the boundaries of their unique style, creating new martial art techniques and inventing new jutsu.

The Branch House was branded with the Caged Bird Seal and they devoted themselves to fighting in war, performing missions, bringing in revenue and protecting the Main House. They were raised to believe that the death of the Main House was the death of the clan and that it was their duty to give their lives to protect the Main House. If necessary, they would kill themselves by activating the Caged Bird Seal or one of the Main House would do it for them.

To begin with, the Main House ruled fairly and the Branch House served them with honour. But after a few generations, the Main House questioned why they should share the elite jutsu that they had painstakingly developed with the ones who were meant to serve them. They believed it was unfair that the Branch House gained recognition for these skills and were seen as the strongest of the clan.

What also came to light at this time was that because the Caged Bird Seal was hooked into the entirety of the wearer's chakra system, it could be partially activated, causing intense pain as a miniature feedback loop is created in their system. Since the chakra coils are connected to one's muscles, organs, bones, and tissue, exploiting the system via the seal allowed them to inflict full-body pain on the subject, attacking every part of them simultaneously and equally. The intensity of this can vary from annoying to excruciating to crippling, depending on how far the seal is activated.

New rules and traditions were set in place so that only the Main House were allowed to learn the advanced jutsu of the Gentle Fist whilst the Branch House were left with the scraps. Should a Branch House speak out or defy the Main House in any way then they would be punished with crippling pain or even death.

It was a time of great friction and discord within the clan but it was followed by resignation. There’s an undercurrent of resentment and jealousy in the Branch House that persists to the current day, but there are very few that genuinely hate the Main House or have tried to change the clan. The Main House ruled and the Branch House served; that is the way of their clan.

A little known fact about the Hyuuga Clan is that there were originally from the area that would become the Land of Lightning and were first invited to join the newly formed Kumogakure. But they chose not to ally themselves with those who had killed and stolen from them for generations, instead venturing south to join their cousins in the Konohagakure. This slight was never forgotten or forgiven.

The clan changed little upon joining the village as, like before, the Main House ruled the clan and the Branch House performed their missions. But they were highly respected by their Konoha comrades for their skills. Some, both inside the clan and out, believe that the separation of houses and the cursed seal were an unnecessary existence now that the Warring Clans Era had ended, but nothing has come from such whispers.

Not yet.

Legendary Tools

Before the age of the Shinobi Sect, the weapons used by men were strictly mundane without any special properties. The first chakra tools that came into existence were the Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths; five objects with unique abilities that he forged with the Creation of all Things to protect humans when he passed on.

Two of his later followers, Masamune and Muramasa, studied these tools and developed techniques that allowed him to create tools and weapons with mystical abilities. But when Masamune saw how his creations were being used, he regretted his naivety in making such powerful tools. His and Muramasa's conflicting ideals on the subject led to a great battle between them that resulted in the death of both and destruction of all their findings so none could learn how to create such weapons anymore.

Some of their creations include:

Kusanagi Sword - One of the toughest swords in existence, the Kusanagi can cut through almost anything and can extend and retract its length at will. Supposedly it was once used to kill an eight-headed snake that was an ancestor to the snakes of Ryuuichi Cave, catapulting it into infamy.

Sword of Totsuka - Also called the Sakegari Longsword, it is spiritual variant of the Kusanagi Sword. It is sheathed in a sake jar; the blade is actually the liquid inside the gourd that is released and shaped, rather than a conventional sword. It is an ethereal weapon with an enchanted blade capable of sealing anything it pierces. Those who are stabbed by the sword are drawn into the jar and trapped in a genjutsu-like "world of drunken dreams" for all eternity.

Yata Mirror - This is an ethereal shield that has no physical form. It is said to be endowed with all nature transformations and as such changes its own characteristics to completely negate any opposition, whether it be spiritual, or physical.

Fuujin and Raijin - Named after the God of Wind and God of Lightning, these are a pair of swords with a solid blade of wind and lightning respectively. They can shift from blade back into the elements themselves to release gales of wind and bolts of electricity. Rather than just elemental chakra, these are true elements that were said be stolen from a raging storm. Senju Tobirama briefly owned the Raijin during the Warring States Era until it was lost in battle.

Shadow Clone Training Method (Knyght)

Knyght

The Collector
I'll get back to those Legendary Tools...eventually. In the meantime, this was to clear up a misconception that Kakashi and Jiraiya knew about the shadow clone training from the start but never told Naruto, and to outline why no-one had done it before.

Shadow Clone Training Method (Official Version)

This method is to use the shadow clone's memory transfer by having them the same training as the original so that they gain twice the amount of experience. This cuts the total amount of training in half. With a thousand clones, something that takes twenty years to learn could be done within a week. Originally, the closest thing to training that was ever done with the Shadow Clone Jutsu was to have a clone read a scroll or participate in a lesson and send that new knowledge back to the original.

Shadow Clones not only divide the caster's chakra in half for each one but they use chakra to maintain their existence, making it a costly jutsu. The caster and clone would then use up more chakra from their training which could easily cause chakra exhaustion or even death. Recovering that chakra can be time-consuming in itself as well.

It was intended to be used for tricky intelligence gathering such as traversing dangerous terrain and infiltrating enemy stronghold and is only briefly used for combat, so most people don't use it enough for such an idea to come to mind. It is also a B-rank jutsu - a jounin-level technique - which would mean that most who learn it would already be jounin or at that level at the time. This would typically mean that they are past the point where they would need such training.

Kakashi was the first to come up with this training method and that was specifically with Naruto in mind. Naruto had been using shadow clones since he was twelve and was only fifteen/sixteen at the time which is sooner than most, he used it far more often and to greater effect than anyone else, he possessed an immense amount of chakra and could recover his stamina in record time so he could creating more clones and maintain them for far longer without the threat of exhaustion. It is truly a training method made for Naruto.

The only drawbacks were that the accumulated mental stress renders him unconscious, and the frustration of particularly difficult training can leave him or his clones vulnerable to the influence of the Kyuubi.

Blaze Release/Kirin (Knyght)

Blaze Release (Official Version)

This is the jutsu style used by Uchiha Sasuke with his Mangekyou Sharingan. His left eye has Amaterasu and his right eye has Kagutsuchi and using these two jutsu together creates Blaze Release. Amaterasu is the highest level of Fire Release and ignites an unquenchable black fire at the focal point of his vision. Kagutsuchi is able to control those black flames with shape transformation, changing its form to suit his needs or extinguishing it.

It is not an original style since there have been Uchiha before Sasuke who posssess those same jutsu with their Mangekyou Sharingan, but he has taken it heights that no-one else has reached. Upon achieving the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, Sasuke became able to channel this power through his Susanoo to create an orb of black flame held within its hand that can be shaped into weapons. He could create a sword of black fire, shoot flaming arrows or rapid-fire black flames in the shape of magatama.

Kirin (Official Version)

This S-rank lightning jutsu was created by Uchiha Sasuke for the sake of killing his brother, Uchiha Itachi. It summons natural lightning from thunder clouds which Sasuke shapes and guides with a small amount of chakra and then fires it as an immensely powerful lightning strike that hits in 1/1000th of a second. This jutsu is certain death to any living creature it hits.

The first version of this jutsu has Sasuke send a significant amount of lightning chakra into the sky to manipulate the weather by creating a localised thundercloud. The lightning chakra stimulates a reaction that gathers natural lightning within the cloud. Sasuke takes control of this lightning and then directs it towards his target on the ground in a lightning bolt. The second version creates the weather conditions by using fire jutsu to heat up the air and have the thunderclouds appear naturally, assuming they aren't already present. The greater the storm, the more powerful the jutsu. Sasuke then controls the lightning that builds up within them and releases it.

The first version is faster but less powerful and needs more chakra, making it best used at the start of a battle to finish things quickly. The second requires preparation but uses very little chakra, making it perfect for finishing a battle with a powerful last move. The jutsu can only be used once per battle in either case as the thunder clouds immediately disperse afterwards.

Why Sasuke Does Not Have the Tsukuyomi (Knyght)

Knyght

The Collector
Okay, I think I covered everything here. If Kishomoto ever tells me otherwise, my eyes will be the ones bleeding.

Why Sasuke Does Not Have the Tsukuyomi

What Sasuke uses is the common Sharingan Genjutsu but chanelled through his Mangekyou Sharingan which apparently has the effect of amplifying its strength, rendering him capable of instantly incapacitating powerful opponents.

Sasuke casts the genjutsu with one eye of his Mangekyou like how Itachi's casts Tsukuyomi with his left eye. But whilst Sasuke typically casts it with his right eye, he has also done it with his left. Twice, since he appears to be holding his left eye in pain. And even regular Sharingan Genjutsu can be used through a single eye as demonstrated by Madara and Itachi. Itachi even uses Sharingan Genjutsu with the Mangekyou himself as his Tsukuyomi is cast with his left eye, not his right. Madara has done the same.

Sasuke has never once called his genjutsu, Tsukuyomi. Kagutsuchi was named the second time it was revealed but it was still revealed and, unlike Tsukuyomi, was an ability Sasuke and the reader had never seen before. Both Danzo and Tobi compare it to Itachi's Tsukuyomi - understable since they are brothers and both use Amaterasu and Susanoo - but neither of them actually call it Tsukuyomi. Only twice has Sasuke used the genjutsu with a name which was "Sharingan" and "Genjutsu - Sharingan" respectively (just like Madara). The latter occasion also makes it explicit by showing his genjutsu side-by-side with Itachi's Tsukuyomi.

Tobi implied that Sasuke had received Itachi's eye techniques but Itachi had only sealed a single use of the Amaterasu inside Sasuke with the Transcription Seal: Amaterasu which Sasuke had no actual control over. And when that was used his eye transformed into Itachi's Mangekyou Sharingan temporarily. So if Sasuke used a Tsukuyomi from Itachi, his eyes would have changed to show it.

The genjutsu Sasuke uses against B resembles the Tsukuyomi with its inverted colours but this is also the only time that happens. Every other time when we see the genjutsu itself, it doesn't have that visual effect. It's also said by Itachi and the second databook that the Tsukuyomi can only be broken by an elite Uchiha with the Sharingan which we later saw proven and explained. Yet B was essentially freed with just a genjutsu dispel.

Ultimately, Sasuke only has Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi with Mangekyou. Amaterasu was first used with his left eye against Killer B. Kagutsuchi was used and named against the Raikage where he shaped the black flames and dubbed it "Enton: Kagutsuchi". The clearest and most indisputable evidence of these two being his Mangekyou jutsu are when he uses both in the battle against Kaguya.

Even after Sasuke took Itachi's eyes to awaken the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, he has never revealed the Tsukuyomi. Instead his existing abilities were empowered.

Once the third databook stated that you would need Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi to awaken the Susanoo, but this appears to be outdated information. If anything, I'd believe that Kishomoto had originally intended to give Sasuke the same jutsu as his brother (with different preferences, perhaps) but decided otherwise at crunch time. As far as we know, the only character with the Tsukuyomi is Uchiha Itachi.

Rock Lee's Talent (Knyght)

Knyght

The Collector
Rock Lee's Talent (Official Version)

Rock Lee has no talent in ninjutsu and genjutsu and has below-average talent in taijutsu.

This does not mean that he cannot create chakra or cannot control his chakra. In Lee's very first appearance, Sasuke notices the chakra flowing through his arms, implying that he was using chakra enhancement to block those kicks like Sasuke first demonstrated. This was likely responsible for his feat of pulling out a tree root one-handed.

In Part 2, Lee demonstrates his ability to water walk and so we can assume that he can walk on walls too. It is likely that Lee can use Genjutsu Dispel as it works by disrupting chakra flow and then using more power to cancel the genjutsu, so it is closer to chakra control than ninjutsu or genjutsu.

So we know that Lee is able to mix his physical and spiritual energy together to create chakra, to create the same amount of chakra and gather it to the necessary place, and to continually release the appropriate amount of chakra.

This means that Lee's specific problem is that he has no aptitude for transforming his chakra into a jutsu. He can create and control chakra but not change its shape or nature, even with hand-seals.

This does not mean it is impossible for Lee to learn ninjutsu and genjutsu. Maito Gai suffered from the same issue but he has at least demonstrated the ability to use the Summoning Jutsu. Theoretically, Lee could learn any ninjutsu or genjutsu if he was willing to put in the same (or even more) hard work that he puts into his taijutsu training.

But as Lee's ninja way is to become a great ninja without ninjutsu or genjutsu, this will likely never happen.

The Mysteries of the Senju Clan Revealed! (nixofcyzerra)

The Mysteries of the Senju Clan Revealed!

Senju. Literally translates as "A Thousand Hands," or "A Thousands Skills."

Decended from the Rikudō Sennin's youngest son, the Senju Clan was known and feared throughout the Elemental Nations for their prodigious ability in all of the Shinobi arts. But what was the source of their incredible talent, and, given their great might, why did they vanish, leaving only one individual who still bears their name, Senju Tsunade? The answer to both these questions lies in the unspoken of, passive trait that all those descended from Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo possess to some degree.

It is a fundamental fact of the Shinobi world that no one Ninja can excel at every Shinobi discipline. Only a scarce handful of Ninja have mastered all five basic Nature Transformations, and none of them can claim to be amongst the very best at other Shinobi disciplines such as tracking or Puppetry. Therefore, the concept of Shinobi specialising in a few disciplines and working as a team to maximise their strengths and cover their weaknesses pre-dates the era of Hidden Villages. However, both Indra's descendants, the Uchiha, and Asura's descendants, the Senju, have an advantage over other Shinobi when it comes to specialisation: their Chakra easily adapts to their fighting style and technique use.

The Uchiha

Aside from their powerful Dōjutsu, the Uchiha Clan were also famed for their skill with Katon Jutsu. This is not only due to a clan member's individual talent and aptitude, but generations upon generations of Uchiha utilising Katon techniques causing Uchiha Chakra to become more and more efficient at being converted into Fire-natured Chakra, and able to reach higher and higher temperatures.

The pinnacle of this specialisation is demonstrated by the Mangekyo Sharingan technique Amaterasu, a Ninjutsu that uses the highest level of Fire Release, a level that simply cannot be reached by Shinobi who lack this level of specialisation. A similar level of specialisation was demonstrated by the 3rd Raikage, a man descended from generations upon generations of powerful Raiton users, and Darui, a bearer of the Storm Release Kekkai Genkai, who were both capable of using the highest level of Lightning Release: "Black Lightning." Uchiha Sasuke was also capable of using something akin to Black Lightning after being granted the Six Paths Yin Power, and while the Flapping Chidori he used during his first battle with Uzumaki Naruto at the Valley of the End also appeared to be black in colour, this was a result of his Curse Seal of Heaven, and not the highest level of Lightning Transformation.

Incidentally, while it is currently unknown if any Shinobi has demonstrated "Black" Water, Earth or Wind Ninjutsu, it has been theorised that the Hydrification Technique of the Hōzuki clan could be linked in some way to the absolute pinnacle of Water Transformation.
The Senju

In contrast to the Uchiha, who specialised in Genjutsu due to their strong spiritual energy, Shurikenjutsu due to the Sharingan's tracking ability, and Katon Jutsu, the Senju Clan did not choose to limit themselves by having the entire clan focus on the same few disciplines, but chose to allow each individual member to find the path that best suited them. While this would not normally be viable or practical for a Shinobi clan, the Senju's adaptable Chakra allowed this to be possible.

Senju Hashirama, aside from his unique Wood Release, also mastered all five basic Nature Transformations along with Yin and Yang Release, and mastered Medical Ninjutsu to the point where he could heal most injuries in moments, without using hand-seals, as well as a multitude of other skills.

Senju Tobirama also mastered all five basic Nature Transformations along with Yin and Yang Release, but of all his elemental capabilities, Tobirama was most well-known for his legendary mastery of Water Release, and his usage of Space-Time Ninjutsu and dangerous Kinjutsu.

Senju Tōka would become renowned throughout the world for her prowess with Genjutsu.

Senju Tsunade is a unique case and perfect example of the adaptable Chakra of the Six Paths Clans. She developed Chakra Enhanced Strength, a technique where the user uses their knowledge of the human body to focus an exceptionally large quantity of Chakra into their hands and feet using precise Chakra control, and then release it with pinpoint timing, which greatly enhances their strength. However, Tsunade's strength differs from her student, Haruno Sakura's. Years of utilising the Chakra Enhanced Strength technique has caused Tsunade's Chakra to adapt to it, granting her incredible raw strength even without use of the actual technique, to the point where she is capable of crushing stones in a single hand with nothing but pure muscle power. This raw strength is later increased to monstrous levels when Tsunade actually uses Chakra Enhanced Strength, allowing her to perform feats like lifting and swinging Gamabunta's tantō.

The Uzumaki can also be included as a demonstration of the properties of adaptive Chakra. The Uzumaki Clan was founded more than a century before Senju Hashirama was born, when the founder, a member of the Senju clan who excelled at Fuinjutsu, caused a rift within the Senju Clan due to no longer being able to stand the constant warfare. Lacking both Hashirama's power and his vision, the man who would come to found the Uzumaki Clan (and his immediate family and followers) instead chose to abandon the battlefield and travel, to find a peaceful place to call home. Their wandering eventually led them to the Land of Whirlpools, where the founder took the name Uzumaki and founded Uzushiogakure.

The Shinobi of the newly-founded Uzushiogakure, and especially the Uzumaki Clan, would continue to specialise in Fuinjutsu, which over time would influence the Chakra of the Uzumaki Clan. Eventually Uzumaki Chakra adapted to the point where it began to take on the properties of sealing "out-of-control power to restore order" and "confining, annulling, or stopping the target from using a specific skill" itself, even without Fuinjutsu being used. This allowed for the possibility of some clan members to manifest Adamantine Chains that could be used to physically restrain targets, as well as directly attack them. Unfortunately, this "Special Chakra" also made the Uzumaki Clan extremely well-suited for becoming Jinchuuriki, and they were targeted because of this.

Uzumaki Naruto has also demonstrated the ability to adapt Chakra, albeit consciously, able to synchronise and transmit Kurama's Chakra to each member of the entire Shinobi Alliance
The Fate of the Senju

ÅŒtsutsuki Indra held the philosophy that power was the ultimate key to peace, while his brother Asura held the philosophy that love was the ultimate key to peace. It is therefore somewhat fitting that the Uchiha Clan would elect to preserve their bloodline by having their members marry within the clan, to maintain their bloodline's power, while Asura's transmigrant Senju Hashirama would encourage his clan to intermarry with the citizens and clans of Konoha. While there were those who preferred to maintain their current marriage traditions, such as the Hyuga who also intermarried to preserve their bloodline (and unknowingly, their inheritance of ÅŒtsutsuki Hamura's power,) many love matches between Senju members resulted in various watered-down versions of the Senju's bloodline inheritence being passed down.

A significant portion of the population of Konoha are slightly stronger and hardier than the norm in other nations. Combined with the philosophy of the Will of Fire, the Shinobi of Konoha are amongst the strongest in the world. Konoha is also known for producing many more S-Class Shinobi compared to other nations. This is also in part due to the adaptability of their Chakra, though individual talent and hard work are still the primary reasons for their strength.

Both generations of the Formation Ino–Shika–Chō have Senju blood in their ancestry, and have inherited a degree of their adaptable Chakra. Nara Shikaku and Shikamaru both displayed an unprecedented affinity for their Hiden Jutsu, as did Yamanaka Inoichi and Ino. The 15th and 16th heads of the Akimichi Clan, Chōza and his son Chōji, on the other hand not only inherited a degree of the Senju's adaptable Chakra, but also a degree of their potent Physical Energy. This is most evident in Chōji, who's usage of Yang Release is so strong that he can utilise Butterfly Chōji Mode.

While he did not inherit their potent life force of the Senju, Hatake Sakumo also inherited a shadow of their strong Physical Energy, and thus their potential superior Yang Release techniques. Having mastered the Quality Control of intentionally imbalancing one's Chakra to be predominantly Yang, otherwise known as Yang Release, Sakumo acquired a tantō comprised of a metal that could be infused with Yang-predominant Chakra through Chakra flow. Using the White Light Chakra Sabre, Sakumo became known as Konoha's White Fang. Unfortunately, Sakumo's son, Kakashi, did not inherit any of the Senju Physical Energy and the blade that in his father's hands could have stood up to the Sword of Kusanagi was shattered.

The Uzumaki, being somewhat isolated in Uzushiogakure, did not disperse as the Senju did, but as they did adopt some outsiders into their clan through marriage, they did not reach the levels of the Uchiha or Hyuga. Uzumaki Naruto, being the son of Uzumaki Kushina, a scion of a clan that can be considered Senju that specialised in Fuinjutsu, and Namikaze Minato, a man who also had Senju in his family tree, received the entirety of Asura's inheritance.

When Indra and Ashura migrated to Sasuke and Naruto (nixofcyzerra)

RE: The Naruversity

Nixofcyzerra's theory on when Indra and Ashura migrated to Sasuke and Naruto.

Right. So we know that strictly speaking Sasuke and Naruto aren't direct reincarnations of Indra and Ashura (spelt with an "H" to differentiate from the Asura Path of the Rinnegan,) as otherwise Madara and Hashirama wouldn't have been able to be revived with Edo Tensei, as their souls would have been reborn and not residing in the Pure World.

Instead, the souls of Indra and Ashura migrate (hence the Viz term "transmigrant") and take up residence in Shinobi who share their ideals, influencing and possibly strengthening their minds and chakra. The question is: When did Indra and Ashura take up residence within Sasuke and Naruto?

Figuring out Indra and Sasuke is relatively simple: In chapter 460, Karin senses a change in Sasuke's chakra since his fight with Killer Bee:

and during Naruto's conversation with Hagoromo, we learn that Naruto sensed Indra's presence within Sasuke during their clash at the Samurai bridge, even if he didn't know exactly what it was. If I had to guess, I'd say Indra migrated to Sasuke right after Sasuke decided to go to the 5 Kage Summit and kill them all. Although it wasn't really expanded on very much at the time, this decision may have been at least partially motivated by Sasuke desiring a revolution (i.e, using power as a key to peace,) which he would expand on almost 250 chapters later (having had conversations with Edo Itachi and Edo Hashirama in the interim which seemed to blunt his hatred somewhat.)

As to when Ashura migrated to Naruto, that's a little trickier. My first instinct was to say that it would have been around the time that Naruto rose above the cycle of revenge by not giving into his anger/hatred and choosing to spare Nagato, but on later reflection, Naruto wasn't really demonstrating Ashura's ideals here. Ashura believed that love and cooperation was the key to peace. However, at the climax of the Pain arc, Naruto certainly wanted peace and to carry on Jiraiya's will to help create a world where people would truly understand one another, but he didn't really have any idea of how to go about it. Naruto admits to Nagato that he doesn't know how to find peace, but is determined enough to find a way that his conviction sways Nagato into putting his faith in him.

My best guess as to when Ashura migrated to Naruto would be just after his first conversation with Kushina's chakra echo/ghost/horcrux:

There are two and a half/three reasons for why I think this. The first is that this is the first time we really see "the power of love" in action in the manga. While Hinata confessed her feelings to Naruto earlier in the manga, it was a confession of romantic love, which, (when the recipient of the question in question isn't some poorly written character who realises that amazingly they too had loved the confessor all along) can be quite confusing and conflicting when you don't really know the other person well enough to return their feelings.* Naruto's transformations into 6-tailed and 8-tailed Version 2 forms were more born out of despair than love having turned to rage/hate.

Kushina's declaration, on the other hand, was an example of less confusing, unconditional parental love, that affected Naruto enough that he was able to completely overwhelm Kurama's hateful will (which was seemingly augmented by by his Negative Emotion Sensing, judging by this page. This example of love would have given a new level of understanding of the emotion to Naruto (who's not exactly had an abundance of it in the past) and while we don't read Naruto reflecting on his ideals/will having evolved to mirror Ashura's, the way he talks about Kurama here and to him here certainly indicates that he understands The Power of Love.

All right I admit it, that last one was just for fun.

The second reason that I think Ashura's transmigration happened at this point is the Torii Seal. It came out of nowhere (I figured Naruto would just shut the Eight Trigrams Seal again,) the only other person we've seen use Torii Seals is Hashirama (another transmigrant of Ashura,) with his Sage Art: Gate of the Great God, and when the Torii appeared, Kuruma was surprised and reacted like so:

So I figure that Naruto was initially just going to rebuild and close the Eight Trigrams Seal, but, having been "possessed" by Ashura, instinctively upgraded to/used the Torii Seal instead. Kurama obviously either associates Torii with the Rikudo Sennin, or sensed chakra that was associated with Hagoromo, ie., Ashura's. And if it was the latter, you'd think he would have been less surprised if Ashura's chakra had been inhabiting Naruto for a while, considering that Kurama was completely aware of Dark Naruto's existence, and considered him the real Naruto.

There is one potential problem with the theory for this reason, however, and that's Minato's chakra mode. Would he be able to enter KCM if he still had an Eight Trigrams Seal himself? Or does he have a Torii Seal too? Minato doesn't have anything to do with Ashura.

The third reason I think that Ashura hadn't transmigrated to Naruto until that point was Naruto's reaction to sensing Indra within Sasuke. Naruto was convinced that despite having learnt Senjutsu and the fact that Sasuke was exhausted, he wouldn't have been able to beat him if they had fought. So apparently Indra was enough of an advantage to outweigh Naruto's Sage Mode and Sasuke's own exhaustion. But throughout the ages the two "brother-hosts" have always seemed fairly even. So if Naruto had Ashura at this point, then Naruto should still have had the advantage.

There may be a slight problem with the evidence supporting my reasoning here, though, depending on the translation of the manga. In chapter 671, we see Naruto flashback to this scene in chapter 488:

Where the implication seems to be that Sasuke has something within him, something dangerous. But in the last panel of chapter 671's flashback to that scene, we have this minor difference that changes the entire meaning:

That "too" implies that Naruto had already sensed Ashura within himself before he sensed Indra within Sasuke. I guess it depends on which translation is more accurate, or if both are and it's a minor retcon.

As for Naruto being convinced that they would both die, perhaps he somehow sensed on some level that he would soon become the next host for Ashura's chakra, or maybe he just wasn't going to back down from their game of "Ninja Chicken."

*Plus Naruto apparently thought Hinata meant she loved him as a comrade. Yeesh.

RE: The Naruversity

EDIT: BASED OFF OF KNIGHT504'S SUPERIOR TRANSLATION POSTED BELOW, DISREGARD THOUGHTS ABOUT "Six grades above the second A-rank ultra high level." INSTEAD, SUMMARISE THIS THEORY AS RASENGAN REQUIRING AT LEAST DOUBLE THE LEVEL OF SHAPE TRANSFORMATION THAT "AVERAGE" A-RANK JUTSU DO, AND SHAPE/NATURE/YIN-OR-YANG TRANSFORMATION BECOMING EXPONENTIALLY HARDER AS THE TRAINEE IMPROVES, PARTIALLY EXPLAINING WHY NARUTO HAD TO USE THOUSANDS OF CLONES TO COMPLETELY MASTER WIND WHILE SASUKE FIGURED OUT LIGHTNING RE-COMPOSITION IN LESS THAN A MONTH.
The Diminishing Returns of Training.

Short theory this time: basically it's exponentially harder to learn a technique the higher the rank and complexity of it is. So while it takes, say, twice as much effort to learn a B-rank technique compared to a C-rank, it's 3 times harder to learn an A-rank jutsu than it is to learn a B-rank. Or something like that.

Minato created the Rasengan in 3 years, and Naruto got it down with clones in a month. But people have been annoyed for some time that Naruto didn't get the one-handed version down until during SWW4. The thing is, though, it's not really as much as a failing as you might think.

Let's put Nature and Shape Transformation on a 1-100 scale, which correspond to the ABCDE ranks (with S-rank basically being any Shinobi/Mission/Jutsu that's on a completely different level from A-rank, as the standard Rasenshuriken is S-rank, but so is the Tailed Beast Ball Rasenshuriken:)

40-A
30-B
20-C
10-D
00-E
So the Academy 3, which aren't elemental in nature and don't involve Shape Transformation (as it is an advanced form of chakra control) beyond the standard hand seals would be a zero on this scale, fitting for Academy students, while the Chidori, another A-rank jutsu, would have a 40/100 in Shape (when preformed without hand seals) and a 40/100 in Nature, for a total of 80.

But remember this page?

"Six grades above the second (highest after S?) A-rank ultra high level."

The Rasengan, the pinnacle of Shape Transformation is six grades above 40, 100. Hence why Rasengan is supposed to be superior to the Chidori's 80 (even if they're the same rank and Naruto and Sasuke's clashes are always draws.)

Now returning to the original hypothesis of my theory, Jiraiya took a year to learn the Rasengan. But, unlike Naruto, he was already a Jounin, who had almost certainly learnt a high level of Shape Transformation in order to learn other A-rank techniques like Swamp of the Underworld. So he would have had a bare minimum of 40 "points" in Shape Transformation. So Jiraiya took a year to double or slightly more (or even possibly slightly less) than double his Shape Transformation up to 100. And as a Jounin (who may or may not have already been semi-retired/on a long-term mission when Minato showed him the technique) Jiraiya didn't have to train as much, so he could probably allocate more time to working on it.

Compare this to Naruto, who could perform the Rasengan in a month with one Shadow Clone. 100/2 = 50. Naruto "grinded 50 points" in Shape Transformation (at least) in one month. Post time-skip, Naruto still needed a Shadow Clone to form the Rasengan. Does that mean his Shape Transformation didn't improve? Nope! For all we know, Naruto had an "80" or "90" in Shape Transformation, a massive improvement that still just wasn't quite enough to pull off the Rasengan alone. But a little more mission experience and practise making Rasengans in combat, and hey presto, Naruto finished off that last bit of grinding! Hence why he can pull off one-handed Rasenshurikens two years later.

So should we really be annoyed that Naruto wasn't able to double his Shape Manipulation during the training trip, when he did double his Intelligence and Genjutsu stats, almost doubled his Taijutsu stat, maxed out his stamina, and improved his strength, speed and hand seals, while also massively improving his tactics, tripling the number of Kurama's tails that he could manifest and learned a bit of Fuinjutsu? I personally don't think so.

The same principle also applies to Nature Transformation. There were three stages Naruto's Wind Transformation training. The first stage was transforming his chakra to take on the nature/quality of the element. So sharpening his chakra so it can cut the leaf. If Naruto had been primarily fire or lightning, he probably would have had to make his chakra hot enough to burn the leaf, or electrify his chakra enough that the leaf would crinkle.

The second stage of Naruto's training was then producing a large quantity of Nature-transformed chakra instantaneously, large and fast enough to cut the fast-moving water of the waterfall, while the third was just putting it into a technique.

People seem to be annoyed that Naruto had to go through Mass Shadow Clone training to learn Wind Transformation when Sasuke learnt Lightning Transformation in less than a month. But it's the same principle as the Rasengan! While training for the finals, Sasuke copied the Chidori's hand seals, meaning that Sasuke didn't really have to learn much, if any Shape Transformation, and he grinded 40 points in Nature Transformation. Plus he could probably use his Sharingan to see some of the differences between Kakashi's regular chakra and his lightning-natured chakra.

Compare this to Naruto, who used the Shadow Clone Training to grind his Wind Transformation all the way up to 100. Remember, the Rasenshuriken is the pinnacle of Shape Transformation and Nature Transformation. It's a 200 on the scale!

There is one issue to this theory, though. Killer B's Supervibrato Lightning Release Swords. He uses lightning-natured chakra flow to increase the vibrating frequency (and thus piercing/cutting power,) to the point where it surpasses standard wind release techniques. So does Killer B just have a very strong lightning nature, as expected from someone from Kumo, or did Sasuke not even completely finish the first stage of his Lightning Transformation training?

TL;DR: Basically, it's a little like Pokemon. While it might take 100,000 EXP to get certain Pokemon up to level 50, it takes 800,000 EXP for those same Pokemon to reach level 100. Sasuke only grinded to beat Gaara the tough sand gym leader, while Naruto grinded to beat Red up on Mt. Silver/Cynthia.

My only problem is, what the hell does this sentence mean? I assume he calls it "A"-rank ultra high level because S-rank hadn't been introduced yet. Does anyone have a better translation?
It's obviously a bad translation, seeing as it appears to imply that "He (Minato) was six grades above" an A-rank Ninja. Seeing as it's shown early on that A-rank corresponds to Jounin:

Jiraiya saying that makes very little sense to me. What, was Minato SSSSSS-rank? Was he a Super Special Awesome Chocolatey Fudge-Coated Super Kage?

There's never been any suggestion that there's a level above "S." Minato got a flee-on-sight rating, but SS-rank is complete fanon.

If jutsu grades are ranked from lowest to highest, by "second" he could be referring to D-rank. In that case, six grades up from that would be a 70 on your scale, or SSS-rank. This makes more sense to me than assuming he was referring to "... the second [highest after S]". Not sure where you got that idea from, unless you were just trying to justify making Rasengan a 100 on your scale.
...So if I asked you to give me an example of a Second-grade/rate anything, you'd name a second from worst something instead of a second-best something?

To me it makes way more sense that's he's referring to the second best after S-rank, and the six grades was to point out that the technique was so far above other A-rank techniques in one aspect (Shape Transformation) that it more than made up for the fact that it completely neglected any other "Transformations."

The "Ultra-High" was probably just a way of emphasising the difficulty of the A-rank technique. Kind of like how Tazuna added "Super" as a prefix every other sentence. And it wouldn't be six grades up from D-rank, as the academy 3 are E-rank.

Which I think is unwarranted - Rasengan is high level shape transformation, but it's obviously not the very pinnacle. We've seen more advanced versions of Rasengan that would certainly require higher levels of shape transformation to pull off - Big Ball variants for one, and that crazy Planetary Rasengan.
I'll admit it, this one stumped me for a while. The manga says that the Rasengan is the highest level of Shape Manipulation. The entry for the Rasenshuriken in the 3rd Databook includes this sentence:

Adding "Wind" "nature manipulation" to the Rasengan, already boasting tremendous destructive power by having raised "shape transformation" to its utmost limits...!!
So I figured that the Big Ball Rasengan was literally just a bigger Rasengan. Same level of Shape Transformation, just with more chakra. Same with Jiraiya's Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan (which is stated in its 3rd Databook entry to just be a result of adding natural energy to a Rasengan,) Naruto's Sage Art: Big Ball Rasengan (which is a Sage version of the Big Ball,) and the Planetary Rasengan, which is just a Big Ball Rasengan surrounded by three regular-sized Rasengan. Same principle as Kakashi forming a Lightning Cutter in each hand to counteract Kakuzu's Lightning Release: False Darkness. Same technique, performed more than once.

But then I read this:

Databook 3 - Oodama Rasengan:
NINJUTSU; Oodama Rasengan (King-Sized* Spiraling Orb)
User: Uzumaki Naruto
Offensive; Close range; Rank: A

Main text

Rasengan: A first-rate ninjutsu that yields destructive power by having chakra rotating wildly in the palm of the hand, while compressing it into a high density. Following a similar pattern, the amount of chakra employed is augmented rapidly, resulting in the Oodama Rasengan. Compacted into an even higher density than usual, the chakra is released all at once, producing an outrageously destructive force, regardless of whether the target is hit or not...!! That said, the chakra consumption is also incredible, proportionately to its might. One could say this is a jutsu for no one except Naruto, who possesses Kyuubi's nigh-inexhaustible supply of chakra.
The sentence about the amount of chakra being augmented is fine, as the level of Shape Transformation doesn't change. But the fact that the chakra is compacted to "an even higher density than usual" implies that further Shape Transformation is being applied.

So there's a contradiction. A technique that's supposed to be the pinnacle of Shape Transformation is improved further into an Odama version. How could this be resolved?

Then I had an epiphany. Remember this?

From the very first time we see him do it, Minato's Rasengan has always been the same size as the Big Ball Rasengan.

And if that's not enough, how about this?

Towards the end of SWW4, Naruto's regular Rasengan increased to the size of the Big Ball variant.

It may be a retcon, but I think that Naruto's Big Ball Rasengan is Minato's Rasengan, except for the usage of clones. The version we see Jiraiya and Kakashi use is a slightly inferior replica that was the best they could do due to not having maxed out their Shape Transformation. To revise my earlier numbers, Naruto achieved about 45% of Shape Transformation, and so with the help of a clone, could create the same type of Imperfect Rasengan as Kakashi and Jiraiya, who each had somewhere in the region of 90% Shape Transformation, while Minato created the pinnacle of Shape Transformation, having mastered it completely at 100%. During the Time-skip, Naruto passed the half-way point for Shape Transformation, and could therefore use a clone to create the Big Ball/Minato's Original Rasengan.

Jiraiya's Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan is adding natural energy to an Imperfect Rasengan, while Naruto's Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan is just adding more chakra to the Big Ball/Original/Minato's Rasengan, which can then be combined with Sage Mode and more Shadow Clones for the Sage Art: Many Ultra-Big Ball Spiralling Serial Spheres.

That's probably even the difference between the Wind Release Rasengan and the Rasenshuriken! The former is the Imperfect Rasengan + Wind Transformation, while the Rasenshuriken is the Big Ball/Minato's OG Rasengan + Wind Transformation.

Even Naruto and Sasuke's final clash supports this idea! Sasuke powers up his Chidori with his Blaze Release: Kagutsuchi, but Naruto's Rasengan still equals it. How could it do that, when the Chidori and the basic Rasengan (that Naruto used in every prior clash) were equal?

Hell, compare this:

With this:

New Headcanon accepted.

I'd also say that Chidori likely isn't A-rank in shape transformation, because it's shape is so simple and basic. It literally just concentrates a bunch of chakra in the hand, it's not even sharpened to an edge (like the Third Raikage's Hell Stab ) and requires the user to run at the target at high speed to give it enough force to penetrate.

So I'd say that Rasengan is likely 70/100 in Shape, while Chidori is 20/100 in Shape and 40/100 in Nature for a total 60.
I'l admit you might have a point here. Maybe the Nature Transformation is somewhat higher to compensate for the comparitively less complex Shape Transformation. So the total is still 80%, but it's a 50%/30% split. Keep in mind that if my theory is correct, the Rasengan is literally more than twice as complex in shape compared to most other A-rank Jutsu, and four times as complex as C-rank Jutsu meant for Chuunin and Experienced Genin (which sort of ties in with Kakashi's philsophy that 3 Genin can beat a Jounin with teamwork,) such as the Great Fireball Jutsu, which is either a big orb of fiery chakra or a constant flamethrower. Neither of those two options are particularly complex.

We're flat told it's up to the user to apply the knowledge learned by the Sharingan to use in replicate the jutsu.
Which explains why KAKASHI was known as the Copy Nin when there were the Uchiha clan: most Uchiha, while talented, weren't ninjutsu super-genius like Kakashi is.
Give Lee the Sharingan and he couldn't copy a D-Rank Ninjutsu because he has no talent at all for it.
Yes, but the point that I was making is that the Sharingan can see chakra. Sasuke would be able to see what Electrically-recomposed/transformed chakra looks like even before Kakashi concentrates enough chakra to his hand that it becomes visible, and he might be able to look at the leaf he's trying to crinkle (assuming that the first stage of Lighting Transformation in similar to Wind's) and see what he's doing wrong. The difference between having to assemble a jigsaw puzzle either with or without knowing what the picture is.

3. Killer B is a 30-so Jonin who did team-up with the candidate Raikage since he was 5. He's simply much more experienced than Sasuke... or Sasuke was never in the position to bother with such use of Raiton.
Also, 4th Raikage does note that Sasuke's Chidori uses "Kakashi's trick": use Raiton to increase penetration and hardness. I believe Chidori basically is a Raiton force-field focused in the palm and\or around the arm to turn it into a spear-like piercing point.
Good point as to the former, and as to the latter, put on your Forehead Protector 'cause you totally Ninja'd me!

Thanks, knight504! Appreciate it!

All right, forget most of my scale, though I do still believe that the Rasengan must use at least twice as much Shape Transformation as the Chidori in order to make up for it not involving Nature Transformation.

And yeah, I must have accidentally accepted fanon that Jiraiya learnt the Rasengan in a year as canon.

That said, Chidori might appear simple, because it's basic shape manipulation and basic nature manipulation.
But we don't have to forget using BOTH at the same time is really hard.
For Naruto, who still kind of sucks at concentrating.

Also: I don't remember Naruto using a NORMAL Rasengan in Shippuden?
If by normal you mean basic initial Rasengan with a clone to help form it, then yeah he used it quite a bit. Sparring with Sai on the way to Tenchi Bridge comes to mind. If you mean the one-handed or the one-handed larger version, then he used it a few times during SWW4, but don't ask me to quote chapter numbers aside from the last fight with Sasuke.

I'll admit it ankokudaishogun, you've done it again. Once again you've made me stop and seriosuly reflect upon/reconsider my opinions about aspects of Ninjutsu.

That said, I'm not sure you're correct, or at least you're going to have to provide another example to convince me, as I don't think Laser Circus cuts it.

I mean, at first I thought that Laser Circus had decent Containment (enough to keep the energy from dispersing,) but exceptional Push (as the lasers are damn fast) and Form (because altering the laser's direction after being shot is practically unheard of for Ninjutsu. I mean, can you think of any other Lightning Jutsu that can do something like that? Even Kakashi's Lightning Beast Tracking Fang moves almost completely linearly.)

Then I remembered that Laser Circus was a Storm Release technique, an advanced nature that combines Lightning and water.

Lightning Release involves converting chakra to take on the properties of electricity. It doesn't cover the magnetic aspect of electromagnetism (hence Magnet Release) but Lightning Release techniques do have Electricity's property of "take the path of least resistance" (although it would be more technically accurate to say that "the current through the high-resistance path can be extremely "negligible.") That's why Lighting Jutsu are still conducted by water (although as pure water does not conduct electricity, there must still be contaminants/electrolytes in Water Release techniques.)

Man, I am really getting my nerd on in this post.

Anyway, my theory is that Storm Release consists of swapping out Lightning Release's "take the path of least resistance" property for Water Release's "flow like water" property.

Thus Laser Circus wouldn't need exceptional Form, as manipulating the direction of the attack would be like putting a bend in the "chakra pipe" containment that surrounds the laser and the "flow like water" property would do the rest.

And I figure that the Rasengan is still considered the height of shape transformation because the Big Ball Rasengan is literally just more of the same. It may be compressing it to a higher density but you're not actually doing anything that wasn't being done before, it's just taken to a more extreme degree.
But surely taking an aspect of Shape Transformation to a "more extreme degree" would involve better Shape Transformation. Before coming up with my Minato's Rasengan=Big Ball Rasengan idea, I assumed the Rasengan involved the highest possible number of rotations, the highest possible density of the chakra in said rotations, and the highest possible level of compression.

Addendum to shadow clone theories (nixofcyzerra)

Addendum to any and all Shadow Clone theories posted in this thread:

Actually forming a Shadow Clone barely takes any chakra at all, provided that the amount of chakra currently flowing through the user's circulatory system is low. It's the clone or clones causing your chakra to be used up two to several times faster than normal that's the real danger of the technique.

Evidence:

Kakashi was almost out of stamina, but was still able to summon up a horde of clones. However, due to having used up almost all of his stamina, Kakashi was bluffing. He only had enough left for the clones to stand there and look menacing. If the clones had tried to move at ninja speed or use Jutsu, then Kakashi would have had to either dispel the clones, or die of chakra exhaustion about three seconds later.

The real question is: When Kakashi dispelled the technique, did he only get back the chakra that was flowing through the clone's circulatory system, and have the clone's memories copied into his cerebral cortex (or the parts of it that handle the different kinds of memories*) via the parts of the circulatory system that interact with the cerebral cortex, or did he also get back the chakra involved in the construction of the clones?

Because if it's the latter, then Shadow Clone is essentially a no-cost jutsu, provided the produced clones don't do anything.

*Sensory memory/Short-Term (working) memory/Episodic Declarative Long Term memory/Semantic Declarative Long-Term Memory/Procedural Long-Term memory. And that's ignoring the important alternative classification of long-term memory used by some researchers, Restrospective Long-Term and Prospective Long-Term memory. Say, can you tell that I studied Psychology for a few years?

Oh, and as I posted in the Miscellaneous idea topic here, I think the Akatsuki rings were made out of Nagato's manifested chakra receivers, and that's how the Magic Lantern Body Technique works.

The "Restoration" power of the Naraka Path.

Naruto Wiki said:
In Buddhism, the Naraka realm, or "hell realm", is a plane of rebirth, based on Karma (actions of body, speech, and mind) built up in a previous life or lives. There are various Naraka, each containing beings that are tormented until their Karma has achieved its full and satisfactory results. The beings can then be reborn into a higher plane.
Based off of this, my concept of the Naraka Path's restoration is that it is not anything so mundane as healing, but instead the literal shedding of Karma (actions of body, speech, and mind.) As such, the Naraka's Path restoration could be considered a reversal of Entropy, the subject being restored to a prior state, being released from the burdens the material world has laden them with. Hence why even clothing can be restored to a pristine state.

While this may seem like an unimportant distinction, as it makes little difference to a Path of Pain, if an injured Shinobi were to be placed within the King of Hell, they would emerge as they were prior to the injury both physically and mentally. That is to say, the time between the moment of their injury and their emergence from the King of Hell would no longer exist for them. Which can be an issue if they learnt something interesting or vital after being injured.

Creating the Elements and Controlling the Elements (Official Version)

There are two methods of using elemental ninjutsu. One is to use the elemental chakra directly and the other is to control the pre-existing element with elemental chakra. A clear example of these methods in practice is Earth Release: Earth Style Wall which can be created by spitting out a mass of earth from the ninja's body which rises up into a wall or by controlling the ground beneath the ninja to make it rise up into a wall.

The first method transforms the ninja's chakra into an element, shapes and releases it. It has the advantage of allowing the ninja to use any elemental ninjutsu anywhere (within reason) but costs more chakra.

The second method transforms the ninja's chakra into an element, melds it with a preexisting mass of the corresponding element, then shapes and releases that. It has the advantage of requiring less chakra because the substance composing it is already available but it can only be used when the natural element is within reach of the user's chakra. And it has the benefit of being a useful counter to chakra absorption since it is harder to absorb chakra from real material than to absorb chakra directly which also, if necessary, allows the user to continually supply their jutsu with chakra to maintain its form, strength and/or movement.

Fire and lightning jutsu almost exclusively uses the first method because of their lack of abundance in nature. Wind jutsu almost exclusively uses the second method because its element exists practically everywhere. And earth and water jutsu are mix of the two because their elements can be found in large expanses but isn't always available.

However, it's possible to use both methods at the same time such as by controlling a pre-existing mass of earth but also increasing its quantity with more chakra. Earth Release: Earth-Style Rampart is one such example of this in action.

Addendum: When an elemental ninjutsu is created entirely from chakra, the jutsu's effects will fade when the chakra dissipates. When an elemental ninjutsu is created using a preexisting element, the jutsu's effects will remain even when the chakra dissipates. When Earth Release: Earth Style Wall creates a wall entirely from earth chakra, that wall will eventually crumble into dust as the chakra composing it dissipates. When Earth Release: Earth Style Wall creates a wall by controlling the ground, the wall will remain in place even when the chakra used to make it dissipates unless the caster or someone else restores it to its original state.

An interesting interpretation of the Eight Gates from a DLPer:

The Eight Celestial Gates allow the cells of a body to use more chakra than they are allowed.
The Gates were mentioned to remove limiters on the human body, allowing him to use more chakra than normal. A few authors took this to mean that shinobi could use more chakra in jutsu, leading to in at least one instance an eighty-meter Rasengan (before the showing of Sage Mode too, I might add). This is probably not the case.

The mental limited likely limit the amount of chakra each cell can consume in its use. Moving your body or flooding you limbs with chakra will enhance your strength up until the point that your brain says no more, I can't take it. Unlocking the Gates allows you to break past this limiter, and infuse your cells with progressively more and more chakra. But since this chakra is over the damage threshold, it begins to damage the tissue. Cells burst due to over-flooding, muscles become stronger than tendons and rip free, the heart and lungs pump into over-drive and begin to fail, nerves begin to fry, calories are being burned up like the Griswolds' electricity meter in Christmas Vacation. As you get farther and farther down the Gates, more damage is cause until by the final gate it is catastrophic. THAT is what happens when the Gates are opened.
Was re-reading the Naruversity thread, and came across this, and figured that since we've seen Gai open the Death Gate, we might as well have another look at it.

The 8 Celestial Gates are eight specific tenketsu on a person's Chakra Pathway System, that limit the overall flow of chakra within a person's body. Interestingly, the first seven gates, and where they're located, correspond to the locations of the "Seven Chakras" from the yogic traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism:

1/2:The Crown Chakra (associated with the brain and the entire nervous system) and the Third Eye Chakra (associated with the Carotid Plexus and the Pituitary Gland) are on/in the head.

3:The Throat Chakra (linked to the Thyroid Gland) is on the throat (or the part of the spinal cord parallel with the throat.)

4: The Heart Chakra (associated with the heart and the blood circulatory system, as well as the lungs and the entire chest area,) isn't actually located directly over the heart as the Death Gate is, but to the left/right of it at the centre of the chest, parallel with where the 4th Gate of Pain is supposed to be.

5: The Solar Plexus Chakra is located, shockingly, on the abdomen.

6: The Sacral Chakra, otherwise known to Martial Artists as the "Hara," the supposed source/focus of Ki, is located at the lower abdomen/stomach.

7: Finally, the Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine, and parallel to where the 7th Gate of Wonder is supposed to be.
Now, considering that the first two gates, the Gate of Opening and the Gate of Healing are located in the brain, I would imagine that these gates do involve by-passing the limits that the brain puts on the body.

The Gate of Opening is canonically stated to remove the restraints of the brain on the muscles, so 100% of the user's strength can be used, whereas normally a person can only use 20% of their muscles' strength to keep them from disintegrating. However, Naruto-verse Shinobi are superhuman because of chakra. Without chakra, Lee can't do stuff like pull enormous roots out of the ground and use them as a shield.

So let's say that 98% of Lee's physical strength is due to chakra, and 2% is due to his actual muscles. Would that mean that opening the 1st Gate only multiplies his muscle strength by 5, raising his total strength to 108%? No, that's stupid. Instead, opening the 1st Gate releases the limitation on the amount of chakra he can enhance his body with, causing his strength and speed to increase to 500%, with the downside that he also uses up his stamina 5x's faster than normal.

Incidentally, it is possible that the majority of Medical Ninjutus require the ability to build-up very small quantities of chakra because infusing too much of your own chakra into a patient's muscle too quickly can damage it, as the muscle will already have the chakra of the patient flowing through it, and thus can't withstand that much more.

It is also possible that Senju Tsunade's Heavenly Kick of Pain and Haruno Sakura's Cherry Blossom Impact, that are both derived from the "Chakra Enhanced Strength" technique that is an application of Medical Ninjutsu, and involves concentrating enough chakra to the limbs that at times their fists and feet develop a visible aura of chakra, is based on a similar concept to the 1st Gate, albeit with superior control that prevents the muscle damage that fighting with the 1st Gate open can cause.

Anyway, after Lee's worn himself out opening the Kaimon and performing the Front Lotus, he can open the Gate of Healing, which replenishes his stamina. This Tenketsu is also located in the brain, and once opened, causes the part of the brain it is connected to, the pituitary gland, to produce both Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH,) which stimulates the Adrenal glands, and Human growth hormone (HGH,) which contributes to the repair and regeneration of bone, muscle, tendons and ligaments. However, extended use of HGH can lead to Nerve, muscle, or joint pain, swelling due to fluid in the body's tissues (edema,) Carpal tunnel syndrome, Numbness and tingling of the skin, and perhaps worst of all, High cholesterol levels. HGH can also increase the risk of diabetes and contribute to the growth of cancerous tumours.

If Lee's "second wind" has failed to allow him to defeat his opponent, he can choose to open the 3rd Gate of life located on the spine, triggering his Thyroid Gland to produce higher levels of thyroxine, which is converted into triiodothyronine by the cells and tissues of the body, in the process causing the body's cells to work faster than normal, otherwise known as hyperthyroidism. This both accelerates Lee's metabolism, but also significantly increases their blood pressure, turning his skin red, and ensuring that blood is reaching his muscles and stimulating cell growth. Extended use of this gate could result in Lee developing Hashimoto’s disease, a condition in which your immune system attacks your thyroid gland.

The 4th Gate probably remove all limiters on the heart and lungs, allowing the increased blood to be hyper-oxygenated and minimising build-up of lactic acid.

The Chakra that the 5th Gate of Joy is based on, the Solar Plexus Chakra, is associated with the muscular system (and the organs and glands in the region of the solar plexus.) It is likely the 5th Gate involves amplifying the performance of the muscles somehow.

It is also likely that, as the Sixth Gate of View is based on the Sacral Hara Chakra, that it would involve increasing the rate at which Physical and Spiritual Energy is converted into chakra.

The Root Chakra, the Chakra that the 7th Gate of Wonder is based on, is linked to the Adrenal glands. That's all I got.

Considering that Kabuto screwing with Naruto's heart seemed to switch his Kyuubi healing off, perhaps the Death Gate is where physical and spiritual energy mixes into chakra and actually enters the circulatory system.

Incidentally, a lot of people seem to forget that the gates are Tenketsu. No wonder Neji never seemed to really worry about Lee beating him. All he had to do is hit the right Tenketsu and he could probably switch Lee's 3rd Gate and up* off!

*He probably wouldn't have wanted to risk trying to hit Tenketsu in Lee's brain.

Converting Chakra Into Substance (Knyght)

Knyght

This isn't meant to be compliant with nixofcyzerra's "Elements of the Human Body" theory. Just doing my own thing. ^_^

Converting Chakra Into Substance

There are some ninjutsu that involved converting chakra into another substance that do not fall under the seven nature transformations. Shizune's Poison Mist converts her chakra into special chemical substances within her body which she expels through her mouth and, when they are exposed to the air, transform into a deadly poisonous gas. Jiraiya's Toad Oil Bullet converts chakra into oil and expels it all at once as a huge mass.

What makes these jutsu different from most is that they require more knowledge than just the necessary hand-seals. The Poison Mist is a jutsu that "combines ninjutsu, chemistry and medical knowledge" since the caster requires an certain level of understanding for those subjects to be able to effectively convert her chakra into the correct substances. This is actually a bastadized version the jutsu used by Hanzo of the Salamander who implanted a venom sac into his body that turned his very breath poisonous.

Similarly, the Toad Oil Bullet uses Jiraiya's knowledge of toads and the oil that they naturally produce from their bodies, as well as use for their jutsu, to replicate that substance with his chakra.

The difference between this and nature transformation is that nature transforms is creates different types of chakra whilst this "chakra conversion" causes chakra to adopt the properties of another substance. It is chakra disguised as something else instead of another kind of chakra altogether. In theory, as long as one understands a substance to a certain degree, they could potentially develop ninjutsu that creates said substance.

Chakra conversion has also been used with elemental ninjutsu as well:

Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning converts fire chakra into explosive powder. Instead of fiery, burning chakra, it becomes a type of matter with the potential to burn. The moment the powder is ignited by spark or flame, it generates a fiery explosion.

Fire Release: Hiding in Ash and Dust converts fire chakra into hot ash. So it takes the form of matter with an incredibly high tempature that burns with heat instead of flames.

Water Release: Starch Syrup Capturing Field is a lesser example of chakra conversion since it doesn't actually create a different substance but it does slightly alter the water's composition to make it viscous.

Transcription Sealing Method (Knyght)

Transcription Sealing Method

This is the broad term for a kind of fuuinjutsu that involves sealing a jutsu's effects within a specific location. A well-known use of it is to seal a jutsu inside a scroll or tag, recorded by a sealing formula, which activates when triggered. Explosive tags are the most famous example but other examples include sealing a genjutsu inside a scroll so that knock out the person who opens, and the suicide jutsu sealed within the tattoos of Konoha's Anbu when missions take a wrong turn.

A more advanced version of this concept is when the Transcription Sealing Method (or just Transcription Seal) is used to seal the jutsu inside a person. This ninjutsu/fuuinjutsu records the desired jutsu and then transfers the it into the body of the target through physical contact. The recipient has no control over the jutsu once it has been implanted; they cannot consciously activate it or prevent it from activating. Unless they possess the unsealing jutsu for the Transcription Seal. The caster is the one who decides what triggers the jutsu which can activate automatically after a certain length of time, when the recipient's chakra has dropped to a certain level, when they have seen a previously specified target etc.

The Transcription Seal can also be applied to oneself so that the jutsu is recorded within the caster's body to be activated when the right conditions are met. And since the jutsu is powered entirely by the caster's chakra, the current state of the recipient has no bearing on its use so there is no danger, for instance, if the jutsu is cast when the recipient is suffering chakra exhaustion. It's even possible to set the jutsu to activate after the recipient is dead to eliminate evidence and/or kill anyone else in the vicinity.

An even higher level of this jutsu can be used by those who share a bloodline limit. Uchiha Itachi's Transcription Seal: Amaterasu was only possible because the recipient, Uchiha Sasuke, had an awakened Sharingan of his own for the jutsu to be released from. Amaterasu could not have been sealed inside someone without a Sharingan.

Element Sealing Method (Knyght)

Updated the Transcript Seal theory to make it more compatible with this.

Element Sealing Method

This is a similar kind of fuuinjutsu as the Transcription Sealing Method which seals a jutsu's effects within a specific location. The difference between this and that is that the Element Sealing Method branch is made to seal the effects of another person's jutsu and are tailored towards the five elements.

There are five versions: Fire Sealing Method, Lightning Sealing Method, Water Sealing Method, Earth Sealing Method and Wind Sealing Method.

Each one is designed to respond to one of the five elements as their names suggest. When activated, the seal which suck the corresponding elemental jutsu into the jutsu-sealed space and keep it stored within. This type of sealing method is primarily used as a defensive tool as it can protect the caster and others from an incoming elemental ninjutsu. But it is not a perfect defence as an appropriately powerful jutsu will weakened at best and unaffected at worst.

This fuuinjutsu doesn't only affect chakra but energy and matter that naturally exists in nature as well. This means that it can be used on ninjutsu that is controlling a preexisting element or even just the element as it exists in nature. For example, the Fire Sealing Method can be used to seal the flames of a campfire if the caster wanted to. Or the Water Sealing Method can be used to seal a large quantity of water from a river. So it is helpful for avoiding secondary damage caused by ninjutsu or potential hazards to the surrounding environment as well as storing environmental resources.

Once sealed, the sealing method requires the correct unsealing jutsu to release the jutsu once more.

In theory, a Yin Sealing Method and Yang Sealing Method could be made but jutsu belonging to those groups are usually designed for support or unorthodox in nature so the effort that would be involved isn't considered worth it.

Naruto: A Logical Study & Guide - part 1

I would like you to have in mind that this is based on reason & logic from what I’ve observed and read from both the anime and manga. My main purpose is to have the most accurate and reasonable timeline for Naruto.

Naruto’s 12th year

According to Narutopedia, “Although not shown in the manga, at the beginning of the episode a shot of Naruto’s calendar reveals the starting date of the series to be on Tuesday the 15th of October rather than sometime at the end of March as originally speculated by fans since in Japan the usual time for a school year to end is at the end of March and begin again at the beginning of April.”

What does this exactly mean? It means that on chapter 3 of the anime, “Sasuke & Sakura: Friend or Foes?” a calendar on Naruto’s room is shown.

It pinpoints the Genin orientation date as Tuesday, October 15. Japan’s airing date for that episode was October 17, 2002, which is most likely that October 15 was the day they finished the production for that episode itself. This means that the year 2002 is the year in which Naruto officially has a timeline from there on. Therefore, the further you go back in time, you have to have in mind that the year 2002 is the foundation on which your timeline must fall on and I suggest you use the calendar from Japan itself of that year and all the years after and before that (A good site for this would be the site Time and Date: http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=2002&country=26. I’ve already taken care of putting the 2002 calendar from Japan, so you have somewhere where you can start).

This also changes the misconception, as previously stated in Narutopedia, of the fans use Japan’s school year as a basis in which they can base Naruto’s school year. This is a complete and absolute error as Naruto’s school year is a complete different one than the one they have in Japan, but it has some basis on it. Naruto’s school year starts on winter and it finishes on October 10, being that that day it’s the final test to which the student can become a genin or not.

Konoha’s Academic Term – Naruto’s 12th year

2nd trimester: Monday, March 18 – Thursday, June 20

3rd trimester: Monday, August 12 – Tuesday, October 10

On Thursday, October 10 on the 12th year since the Kyuubi’s Attack and the Sandaime’s re-assignation as Hokage, Naruto paints the Hokage Monument as a birthday gift for him. He also has the Genin Exam and that’s also the day Mizuki chooses to reveal to Naruto that he’s the Kyuubi’s jinchuuriki. The next day is the Genin registration, which is on Friday, October 11. The weekend is a long one due to the fact Monday is a holiday called, “Coming of Age Day.” The government system returns to work on Tuesday, October 15, which is the day of Naruto’s Genin Orientation and the assigning of Team 7 with Hatake Kakashi as their sensei.

I’d like to thank my friend Marie Wolfe, otherwise know as freewolf17 in DA, for pointing out to what led me to do a logical study into the timeline issues within Naruto. Until the next installation, everyone!
Naruto: A Logical Study and Guide - Part 2

Hi guys! Welcome to the second part of this installation! On my last installation, I established the correct timeline where Naruto is supposed to run and where people should go by. In this one I’ll go from the infamous bell test right up to the where the Chuunin Exams start. Accompany me as we go through a brief recap of the Naruto manga and anime with an actual working timeline, without further due enjoy!

The Survival Test was omitted for good reason on part 1, due to the fact that it’s very crucial on the Naruto timeline till the start of the Chuunin Exams.

It’s a much known fact around the Naruto Fan Base that ‘Kakashi is a horrible sensei and didn’t teach his students anything at all. He even went as far as taking them to a C-rank unprepared and it even hadn’t been a month when he took them.’ I’d like to very much point out that this is completely untrue and I’d like to point out why. As I stated on part 1, it’s October 15 when Naruto gets assigned to Team 7. At the end of the introduction, he states to meet them the next day at 5:00 a.m., which would be on…

Wednesday, October 16 - Survival Test, otherwise known as the infamous Bell Test, starts at 10:10 a.m. Team 7 has an hour and 50 min. to get the bells. At 12:00 p.m. the clock rings and at 12:10 p.m. Naruto finds himself tied up to a stump with Sasuke and Sakura at each side.

We all know what happens after that, Kakashi passes them with flying colors and tells that starting tomorrow they’d start their duties a team. Therefore on…

Thursday, October 17 – Team 7 starts its duties.

After that, there are no more dates to calculate as Kishimito pretty much does a time-skip and it introduces us with Team 7 catching once again Madame Shijimi’s cat, Tora.

We start with the disastrous Land of the Waves arc, which turns Kakashi in the Naruto fandom as the worst sensei in history. If this statement it’s true, then, why does Naruto states this?

I’d like to put my emphasis on the statement of him taking many missions. Not a few missions, not just several, it clearly says many missions. How much missions exactly? The databooks only state 7 D-ranks. However, it’s most likely that it didn’t count the countless failed missions Team 7 did during that period of unknown time and the countless training it did.

But this is where it gets good, really, really good. To calculate this, I used the 2002 and 2003 Japanese calendars. The C-rank mission to the Land of Waves happens around 7 months, 1 week and 5 days later. It just so happens that it’s conveniently near a certain event. A coincidence, maybe? I think not.

Therefore, the C-rank mission (cough, B-rank, really) happens on…

Friday, May 30th –Team 7 departs very early from Konoha with Tazuna. Later on in the afternoon, after all the subsequent events happen, Naruto goes off to training to prove that heroes exist.

A small time-skip is shown and the days jump to…

Friday, June 6 – Naruto appears to be sleeping after training vigorously. He also encounters Haku, which becomes a very fundamental moment in his life as they both talk about their precious people.

Saturday, June 7 – It’s stated that Naruto left by himself last night and has also skipped breakfast again. Sasuke never returned from his walk either as he decided to train too.

Sunday, June 8 – The Battle of the Wave Bridge begins. It takes most of the morning till the afternoon. Momochi Zabuza and his apprentice Haku are among the casualties.

2 Weeks later – That’s from Monday, June 9 to Sunday, June 22. Zabuza and Haku’s graves are also shown before Team 7 departs. Tazuna names his bridge, “The Great Naruto Bridge.”

Team 7 returns to Konoha on Sunday, June 22nd. It’s most likely that Kakashi gave them the day off, which would be Monday, June 23rd. Now, you’re all probably wondering where I’m going with this and this is where I shall unveil the unmentioned certain event.

That’s right, the certain event is none other than the Chuunin Exams, that’s starts, when exactly? “…7 days from now. On the first day of the seventh moon…” Let’s backtrack a little, if in a week the exams start. Then, it’s…

Tuesday, June 24th – Team 7 is shown doing a mission and Kakashi leaves to report, due to the fact he’s being summoned. The Sandaime Hokage announces the start of the Chuunin Exams in seven days.

How do I know this? “…on the first day of the seventh moon…” I did a little bit of research about the mentioning of the seventh moon and I learned that in ancient times people used the moon as a calendar, which is called a lunisolar calendar. It’s most likely that Konoha follows a lunisolar calendar and a traditional calendar. There’s twelve lunar months and the seventh month pinpoints to July. It’s possible that the Sandaime is using this as an expression referring to July 1st, leading to the conclusion that a lunisolar calendar used to be used previously.

This means that in seven days on the…

1st of July – The Chuunin Exams start.

And that it’s my conclusion for part two. I hoped you guys have enjoyed this as much as I have and learned a lot.
Edit: Easiest way to figure out anything regarding the timeline of Part 2 is to look at characters who died, and their birthdays/age at time of Death.

Uchiha Itachi: June 9, 18 (1st appearance,) 21 (Death.)

Jiraiya: November 11, 50 (1st appearance,) 54 (Death.) Jiraiya celebrated 4 birthdays between his first appearance and his death.

Edit2: Another timeline!

Water Release: Hiding in Water Jutsu and Earth Release: Hiding in Earth Jutsu

This pair of ninjutsu allows the caster to merge their body with an existing source of water or earth, whether it's natural or made from chakra, letting them blend in with the environment to escape pursuers or survey a target. Only a sensor-nin would be capable of detecting them in this state and even they can be fooled by a skilled user. The substance can smaller or larger than the caster's own body and they can move within the confines of the material if it's big enough. And it's possible for them to partially extend body parts outside of the substance which is typically used to extend the user's range of vision by poking their head out for a look, though said parts retain their watery or earthen texture. They are less susceptible to direct physical damage in this state but not completely immune and if the earth or water is significantly disturbed then it can cause the jutsu to end by itself.

On a similar topic, I'm trying to figure what Orochimaru's doing in these scenes and whether they're two different examples of the same jutsu: [1] [2] [3]
